Guiness World Records holder for being the most awarded female act of all time, Whitney Houston, died today (February 11, 2012) at the age of 48.

Her accolades include 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston is also one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide.

Among her hits that will live on as her legacy were “One Moment in Time,” “How Will I Know,” “Saving All My Love for You” and “I Will Always Love You” (above video).

Drug abuse is purportedly the cause of her death. In recent years it will be recalled that her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

Some of us might just forget to do that and in the middle of it someone calls…just like what happened during Lukáš Kmi?s performance at a Jewish synagogue in Slovakia. Just as he reached quite of ebb of his piece. He can be seen in the video a bit glaring but playfully reacted with the situation by imitating the tone with his violin. He then smiled. He got an applause in the end.

In the film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s book, Never Let Me Go, the character has a favorite song that she often listened to and from which the title of both were derived. In the book, Kathy, the narrator found a cassette tape called Songs After Dark by a 1950s singer Judy Bridgewater during one of the bazaars. Bridgewater is a fictional singer in the story, Kathy would play the tape often listening to Never Let Me Go interpreting it as a song of a mother for her child rather than romantically. It got lost somewhere in the story and believing that all things lost get found in Norfolk, she searched for it with the help of her friend Tommy who originally wanted to be the one to find it.

In the film, the cassette was seen as given by Tommy to Kathy and it never got lost in the story. It was played a lot of times too, to emphasize the character’s fondness to the song. Never Let Me Go was actually a pre-existing one written by Luther Dixon but sang by Canadian singer Jane Monheit for the movie.

One of our favorite director is Hayao Miyazaki and along his works we truly learned to love Joe Hisaishi who worked with him in most of his films.

This is the main theme of Howl’s Moving Castle titled Merry-Go-Round of Life. As his other compositions, this is very moving, I could go on listening for hours to this. I also credit Joe for giving me the urge to learn how to play the piano even now that I may be older for it. I’ve often mentioned that my older sister plays the piano because she learned it while I was too shy back then…I regret it now. Soon, someday soon I will play this, for now I’m happy listening.

It has been two years and a half since my dad passed away. Here, listening to this song is like rubbing salt on open wound. Perhaps doing that would make the wound heal faster but then the scar would always be there to remind me of my loss. As the singer, despite knowing the promise of John 5:28, I would love to dance with my father again…

Dance with my Father was originally sung by Luther Vandross and covered by Kellie Coffey and Celine Dion among other artists but this is a cover I found on youtube. The song lyrics effectively gives you a feeling of longing not only for the singer but to those she loves most, his mom. I can’t help but cry when I listen to this song. As mentioned, I hold on to the promise of John 5:28 – yet, imperfect as could be I could only but long to see my dad who I haven’t seen in almost 7 years and would not until the promise is fulfilled.
