"Coming Home"

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you know, it's Homecoming Week here at George Mason. Join us Wednesday night for worship at 7:47 pm in Johnson Center Room F as we consider how our awesome God continues to welcome us into God's family.

Thursday, February 2, isn't just for Groundhogs! It's also the day the church celebrates the Presentation of Jesus at the temple 40 days following his birth, in accordance with Jewish custom. According to the gospel of Luke (see chapter 2, verses 22-40) on this occasion, the man Simeon was "guided by the Spirit" to the temple to see Jesus, the Messiah. He offered his praises to God with the words we know as the Nunc Dimittis:
     "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
   according to your word;
    for my eyes have seen your salvation,
         which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
      a light for revelation to the Gentiles
    and for glory to your people Israel."

Luke also tells us that on that same occasion, Jesus was also revealed to be the Messiah to the 84-year old prophet Anna, who also offered her praises to God.

This day is celebrated in some traditions as Candlemas, when candles for use in the home are often brought to worship to be blessed for the year.

Greetings from your Lutheran Campus Ministry!
Welcome new students, especially those who will attend one of the Mason Orientation sessions today!

Today the church commemorates the confession of Saint Peter, in response to Jesus' question to his disciples: "But you, who do you say that I am?" And Peter replied: "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." (Matthew 16:15-16).

Today also begins the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

"Almighty God, you inspired Simon Peter to confess Jesus as the Messiah and Son of the living God. Keep your church firm on the rock of this faith, so that in unity and peace it may proclaim one truth and follow one Lord, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever." Epiphany Blessings

Today the church celebrates the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord. Epiphany means "manifestion," "making known," or "revelation". Especially today we remember how Jesus the Christ has been made known to all nations. Read the story of the adoration of the child Jesus by the magi in Matthew 2:1-12.

"Almighty and ever-living God, you revealed the incarnation of your Son by the brilliant shining of a star. Shine the light of your justice always in our hearts and over all lands, and accept our lives as the treasure we offer in your praise and for your service, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever."

It's Not Too Late!

It's not too late to sign up for the

Leadership and Discernment Retreat, January 13-15, 2012
College students are invited to a retreat at Mar-Lu-Ridge Retreat Center in Jefferson, MD!. The cost is $30 and includes five meals: Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Sunday breakfast and lunch. Registration is from 6-8pm Friday night, Program begins at 8 pm. Retreat ends at 2pm, Sunday. To Register contact Pastor Ray Ranker via email or at 301-405-8448. Scholarships available. It is now time for me to say good by. I have been called to be the pastor at Salem Lutheran Church in Jarrettsville, Maryland, and will begin there January 1.

We welcome Pastor Terry Hannon as the new interim campus pastor for LCM.

Freeborn Lehman's Last Day on Earth

Alpha Psi Omega, the theatre honors fraternity, is hosting a staged reading of GMU Professor Lisa Nanni-Messegee's "Freeborn Lehman's Last Day On Earth," a new play which discusses the challenges of a group of homeless teens in Los Angeles. All proceeds will be donated to Our Daily Bread, a local charity.

Interfaith Youth Core has asked me to pass along news below regarding an upcoming Interfaith Leadership Institute (January 12-15 in Atlanta). You, your students, or your colleagues may be interested in applying to attend.

Campuses are asked to apply in (ideally multi-faith) delegations of up to 5 individuals, including at least one staff or faculty member. This could make the event a great opportunity to build on or start new cross-campus relationships.

Greetings!

The 2012 ELCA Campus Ministry Conference will be held in conjunction with the 2012 Global Conference of Chaplains in Higher Education June 25-29, 2012 in New Haven Connecticut. For more information regarding the conference go to:

The Campus Ministry Staff Advisory Committee discussed several options for how we could gather as ELCA campus ministry staff in the midst of the larger community. Rather than adding an additional day, they are proposing that we gather as an ELCA community the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, June 27 in lieu of the outing to Mystic Seaport. Kristen, Erin, and I will be working with Kari Keyl, campus pastor at Yale, and Callista Isabelle, associate university chaplain at Yale (and an ELCA pastor!) to make arrangements for our ELCA cohort and plan to meet with them in mid-November. We will be in touch in early December with more details. Eligible Campus Ministry Agencies (CMAs) will once again be able to receive travel reimbursement to the event.

We look forward to this unique opportunity to gather with those engaged in campus ministry around the world!

+++Come before Mason Madness and see the deeply moving movie "Question 7"-- It concerns a talented teenager in East Germany, under Communism, (about 1960) whose father happens to be a pastor. This movie is important from both a historical and a religious view point.

++Sexual Discussion time--resumes Monday Oct 17th-And Tuesday Oct 18th is the next "Theology Pub" Opportunity!!!!!
