The Emergency Department at the Dayton VA will be Closed

June 23^th from 0001-1800 hrs.

for Construction

The Dayton VA Emergency Center will go on “lock down” on the night of the June 22^th..

This includes all emergencies including 72-hour (Pink Slip) mental health holds.

All telephone referral lines, including the veteran crisis line. Will stop referring patients at 9 pm on the 22^th.

ED Closure signs will be placed at entrances to the VA campus.

Extra signs will be placed outside of the hospital.

The ED parking lot and ED access will be closed and blocked off during this time.

There will be a crane in the area.

911 will be used for the patients who require emergency care.

EMS arriving on June 23^th for patient pick up will be directed to the clinic entrance located on the left side of the front of the hospital.

VA Staff will provide direction to EMS crews into the clinic areas for clinic patients.

WHAT?
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has funded investigators at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine to study the impact of a novel mobile enabled study tool. The study tool is packaged in a mobile app and text message platform. The overarching goal of the study is to determine if this mobile technology has an impact on key indicators of EMS clinician sleep health and teamwork.

WHO IS THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE RECRUITING?
They are looking for dozens of EMS agencies and a maximum of 15 EMS clinicians per EMS agency to join our study. They are looking for:

Frontline, patient-facing EMS clinicians certified as an EMT, Paramedic, Firefighter, Flight Nurse, or other EMS certification;
18 years of age or older;
Working at least one clinical shift per week;
Participants must own a smartphone that can download a mobile app from the App Store or Google Play; ...
Must be allowed to use their smartphone most times during work shifts (except during safety critical periods), and must be willing to exchange text messages with from the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine team and use the SaFTiE mobile app for a 6-month study;
This is a research study and participation is completely voluntary!

WHAT IS INVOLVED? The University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine wants to test the impact of a brief behavioral intervention administered via mobile phone text messaging and with the new SaFTiE mobile app.

WILL I RECEIVE REMUNERATION? YES -all who are eligible and agree to participate can earn up to $100 in remuneration AND receive numerous items each month such as a coffee mug, glove pouch, specialty engraved challenge coin, exclusive EMS shoulder patches, wallet sized reference guides for critically ill EMS patients, specialty engraved ballpoint pens from the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine. They also provide the opportunity to receive continuing education credits approved by the Commission on Accreditation for -Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE).

Sinclair Community College EMS department is actively searching for adjunct faculty members to begin teaching in Fall of 2021. Adjunct faculty provide the majority of education within the laboratory and clinical settings. Adjunct faculty are paid by the course: teaching, setup, tear down, remediation, emails, etc. This results in an hourly rate of approximately $37.00 - $40.00/hour.

The successful candidate will

Be an Ohio licensed paramedic
Be an Ohio licensed EMS instructor – full course
Be a practicing paramedic for at least 2 years
Have previous experience in teaching EMS
Have a high school diploma / GED

Candidates selected for interview will

Demonstrate effective teaching techniques. Candidates will teach any EMS topic for 20 minutes to an interview panel.
Interview with the EMS Department Chairperson
Demonstrate current knowledge in EMS. This requirement is deferred until 2022. This is accomplished through

Taking and passing the NREMT test at the paramedic level within the last year
Taking and passing the FP-C or CCP-C test within the last year
Taking and passing the Sinclair paramedic program comprehensive final within the last year.

PECC Workforce Development Collaborative

What is a PECC?

A Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC)--sometimes referred to as a pediatric champion or pediatric liaison--is a term that the EMSC program uses to refer to any individual who has a particular interest in or responsibilities related to pediatric emergency care. Sometimes this individual is dedicated solely to this role. However, depending on the pediatric volume of the EMS agency or hospital, this person may take on the PECC duties in addition to other responsibilities (e.g., educator, trauma coordinator, etc.). Various roles and responsibilities are often given to a PECC but common responsibilities include ensuring the availability of pediatric equipment, supplies and medications, pediatric education/training, and advocating for pediatric considerations to be included in protocol/policy development.

Who should participate?

Anyone that is interested in improving pediatric readiness within your EMS agency, ED/hospital, or within your region, to include EMSC State Partnership Programs. You do NOT need to have any formal pediatric training, or a title related to pediatric care. You already have everything you need to participate…an interest in pediatric emergency care.

Why participate in the PECC Workforce Development Collaborative?

This collaborative will develop individuals who are interested in improving the quality of pediatric care at your EMS agency, ED/hospital, or within your region. We will provide resources, example practices, and networking opportunities at no cost to help push forward any effort for pediatric improvement.

We know that the presence of an individual with an interest in pediatric emergency care is strongly correlated with improved outcomes for children. No effort to improve pediatric emergency care is too small to make an impact. This collaborative will have a broad scope. No matter where your starting point is, we will provide you with tools to improve. There is no cost to participate, and you will have the opportunity to earn continuing education or Maintenance of Certification Part 4 credit.

How it works

The collaborative will occur in two parts. During the first half, we will explore seven pediatric readiness areas of focus, evaluate your agency or ED/hospital level of pediatric readiness, and identify areas for improvement. In the second half, we provide coaching and tools to help you develop an improvement project.

All collaborative activates will be conducted online and through virtual meetings.

In case any EMS agencies are contacted by Law Enforcement regarding this issue, please see the information below from the State EMS Medical Director. This issue has also been reviewed by GMVEMSC Legislative Committee, and by our region’s RPAB. RPAB’s statement was, “New regulations regarding the law-enforcement restraint and confinement of pregnant or recently pregnant offenders has become law in Ohio. It requires law enforcement to contact a pregnant female’s “healthcare provider” prior to such actions as defined by the ORC/OAC. The current consensus is that this definition does not apply to EMS providers. This applies throughout all 40 weeks of pregnancy and for several weeks postpartum. The Region 3 RPAB was unanimous in concluding that EMS personnel should not provide clearance for the restraint or confinement of pregnant females, nor should they make assessments regarding the status of a pregnancy for these purposes as this is not consistent with EMS training and practice."

RE:	Restraint of Pregnant Adults and Children by Law Enforcement Personnel

For informational purposes, I want to make you aware of two laws for law enforcement personnel that went into effect on April 12, 2021. Ohio Revised Code 2901.10 and Ohio Revised Code 2152.75 address the restraint of pregnant adults and children, respectively, by law enforcement personnel. These laws require law enforcement personnel to contact the healthcare provider prior to applying physical restraints to a pregnant adult or a pregnant child.

In the interest of clarity, it is important to inform all parties that these laws do not apply to certified Ohio EMS providers. Specifically, please note the following:

1. Certified Ohio EMS providers should be dispatched to respond to patients experiencing medical emergencies with the primary intent of transport to a healthcare facility. EMS personnel should not be dispatched by law enforcement personnel or other parties to restrain a person, physically or pharmacologically, for the sole purpose of facilitating an arrest or transport to a non-medical facility.

2. The “healthcare provider” cited in these two laws is defined in Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 2108.61 as physicians, registered nurses, certified nurse-midwives, or physician assistants. Certified Ohio EMS providers are not included, and therefore cannot serve as the point of contact for law enforcement personnel as required by ORC 2901.10 and ORC 2152.75.

3. These two laws do not diminish or revoke the authority of the EMS medical director to provide written protocols for physical management of pregnant persons by certified Ohio EMS providers, particularly within the scenario of a violent or uncooperative patient.

#GMVEMSC: Announcing Phyllis Harover's Retirement

We are both happy and sad to announce that Phyllis Harover will be retiring after 43 years of service.

Phyllis started as a charge nurse/supervisor at Sycamore Medical Center, on night shift in ED when the doors opened in 1978. She has been a nurse for 59 years and has served in many roles. She has taught paramedic classes at Sinclair and Butler Tech, has been a pharmaceutical rep, an assistant vice president of nursing and a nurse practitioner serving in the network emergency departments. Phyllis is a believer and role model of lifelong learning, she received her Nurse Practitioner degree later in her career and at work I would often hear her say, “I just read an interesting article on…”. Phyllis is known for her energy, her knowledge and her passion for nurturing new nurses.

Phyllis will enjoy her retirement spending time with her sons, and grandchildren. She plans on spending much of her time golfing and traveling with her husband.

When they interviewed Phyllis for receiving the Leader’s Choice Award she stated:

“They won’t remember me 50 years from now, but they’ll remember what we stood for. It’s not about the individual person; it’s about what we collectively stand for when we care for patients”.

Phyllis’ impact on the profession of nursing will not be forgotten.

Please come and celebrate her retirement (see attachment).

Part time Firefighter/EMS Provider

Spring Valley Township Fire Department is seeking to fill part time firefighter shifts on a 24 hour every 6th day on a SAFER Grant in the near future.

A Spring Valley Township Firefighter must be willing to work as part of a team and build professional relationships with staff, colleagues, co-workers, elected officials, community leaders, and citizens. This position requires a physically fit professional who has a passion to provide efficient professional Fire/EMS services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
