Bauksit adalah biji logam alumunium (Al) dan merupakan suatu koloid oksida Al dan Si yang mengandung air.

Secara geografis daerah Kalimantan Barat beriklim tropis. Pada daerah beriklim tropis ini, pelapukan batuan terjadi sangat kuat, yang memungkinkan terbentuknya mineral bauksit (Al2 O3) pada batuan yang kaya akan mineral feldspatik. Hal ini dikarenakan bauksit terbentuk oleh pengayaan (akumulasi residu) mineral Al2 O3 akibat pelapukan yang kuat dengan slope topografi tertentu.
