Type and level of scholarships

NZDS are awarded for full-time, postgraduate level study (i.e. Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Masters degrees) in New Zealand. The types of course include:

Semester-long Postgraduate Certificates,
Year-long Postgraduate Diplomas in areas such as Agricultural Science, Water Resource Management, and Geothermal studies, and
Masters Degrees in subject areas such as Agri-Commerce, Resource Management, and Geothermal Energy.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants for the scholarships must meet the generic eligibility criteria before their application will be considered against the selection criteria, including any criteria specific to Africa. The Scholarships are directed to public sector, private sector and civil society (including NGO) candidates who independently apply for a scholarship, and who meet the eligibility and selection criteria outlined below. Preference will be given to applicants from disadvantaged communities.

Applicants must:

be a citizen of Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe (i.e. permanent residents of these countries are not eligible to apply);
be residing in their country of citizenship, preferably for at least two years prior to application;
have been working in their home country, including since completing their highest tertiary qualification, for at least two years prior to application;
be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to their home country’s public, private or community sector (as relevant), and to the development of their home country in general;
agree in writing that they will return to their home country for a minimum period of two years following completion of their scholarship in order to contribute to their country’s social and economic development;
not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country;
not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds, or who is eligible to hold, citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country;
be 40 years or under at the time of application;
be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for one already commenced in New Zealand or another country;
not have completed, or nearly completed, a qualification at a similar level, unless strong developmental relevance is demonstrated;
satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand education institution at which the qualification is to be undertaken, including English language criteria; and
be available to take up the scholarship in the academic year for which it is offered.

Applicants cannot:

be studying full-time at post-secondary level;
be transferring from another tertiary scholarship (either in New Zealand or in another country) to a New Zealand Development Scholarship;
hold, or have held, a New Zealand Government or Australian Government scholarship in the 24 months preceding the scholarship start date;
not hold another scholarship during the period of the New Zealand Development Scholarship; or
have been terminated from a New Zealand or Australian Government scholarship previously.

Applicants are expected to continue residing in their home country during the Scholarship application and selection process. If offered a Scholarship, candidates must:

be able to satisfy Immigration New Zealand requirements for international student entry to New Zealand (e.g. medical checks and police clearance/character checks, etc).
undertake a medical examination, including HIV/AIDS testing, to ensure they are physically capable of travelling and pursuing long term study in New Zealand.

English language requirement

New Zealand tertiary education institutions set their own admission requirements for English language proficiency. As a guide, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0 for postgraduate level study. Some postgraduate qualifications require a higher score, particularly in education and the health sciences. All applicants should check the English language proficiency requirements, including the IELTS or TOEFL score required, for admission to their selected New Zealand education institution. It is mandatory for candidates to provide the original copy of their IELTS or TOEFL test result as a pre-condition of placement. Results must be no older than 24 months at the time of the scholarship start date.

In some cases, applicants whose primary to tertiary education has been in English will not normally be required to provide an IELTS or TOEFL test score but are required to provide a letter with their application from the tertiary institution the applicant last attended stating that English is the language of instruction.

Application process and closing dates for applications

NZDS candidates apply directly to one of the participating New Zealand education institutions after ensuring that they meet the New Zealand Scholarship eligibility criteria. The education institution distributes and receives New Zealand Scholarship application forms. In order for the application to be considered, applicants must:

complete one original New Zealand Scholarship application form (available on request from the relevant New Zealand education institution);
indicate the level and field of study required;
attach to the application form an original or certified copy of the documents necessary to substantiate educational qualifications (i.e. full academic transcripts and completion certificates);
attach to the application form three references (no more than 24 months old) on official letterhead supporting the application to study in New Zealand. One reference should be from a current employer and one from a former academic supervisor or lecturer;
ensure the relevant section of the application form has been signed and stamped by their employer; and
forward the completed original application form and all relevant supporting documentation, plus one photocopy of the completed application form and all relevant supporting documents, to their selected New Zealand education institution.

It is important that all requested supporting documentation is included. All applications must be completed in English, with certified true copies of official English translations (where the original document is not in English) attached to the NZDS application form. Applications with incomplete supporting documents will not be processed.

Closing dates for applications

Applicants must ensure that the institution receives the completed New Zealand Scholarship application form (including all supporting documentation) before the institution’s closing date.

Selection Criteria

In addition to the eligibility criteria above, candidates’ applications will be considered against the following selection criteria:

the proposed study programme links to one of the identified priority development sectors for Africa (see page 1);
the applicant clearly demonstrates the developmental relevance and applicability of their proposed study programme to the human resource development training needs of their country;
applicants for postgraduate study must hold a recognised Bachelors degree of strong academic merit, relevant to the proposed postgraduate qualification. (Note: The New Zealand Aid Programme gives preference to candidates who do not already hold a degree from a developed country);
the applicant clearly demonstrates their links and commitment to their home country (e.g. services to their community, ability to influence change in a key development sector, etc), supported by references.

The proposed study programme must be relevant to:

recent paid and/or unpaid (volunteer) work experience ;
the training needs of the employing organisation;
identified employment opportunities on completion of their study;
consideration of gender equity, including efforts to ensure the scholarships are offered equitably between male and female candidates; and
consideration of other factors which will contribute to the success of their studies (e.g. good character, positive study attitude and motivation to succeed).

Selection Process

Applications received by the participating New Zealand education institution will be assessed for admission to the institution, and checked against the New Zealand Development Scholarship eligibility criteria. The institution will then send complete applications, for candidates with unconditional offers of place, to the New Zealand High Commission in Pretoria (via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington, New Zealand). The New Zealand High Commission will shortlist eligible applications according to the selection criteria, and shortlisted candidates will subsequently be interviewed (by telephone) by a Pretoria-based panel. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will advise the education institutions of the outcome of the New Zealand Scholarship selection round by late September. Scholarship applicants will be notified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade regarding the success of their application and what they should do next.

Additional Information

Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as the New Zealand Government attempts to ensure gender equity among scholarship holders.

Scholarships must be taken in the year for which they are offered and cannot be transferred to the next academic year.

If offered a New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship, travel to New Zealand is subject to a visa being issued by Immigration New Zealand. Candidates may be required to provide additional information to assist with immigration requirements. Successful candidates should allow at least two months for their student visa application to be processed.

Information on Scholarship allowances and entitlements, and conditions of the New Zealand Scholarship is provided in the New Zealand Development Scholarships section.

The scholarship will cover air travel, full tuition fees, an establishment allowance, and a living allowance to cover day to day costs in New Zealand. Applicants may also be entitled to return travel to their home country to see dependant family members under the Reunion Airfare Entitlement.

New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship awardees may work for up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year and any holidays within the academic year and full-time during the Christmas-New Year holiday period.

The New Zealand Aid Programme does not provide funding for dependants. However, eligible partners of awardees are now able to apply for open work visas without an offer of employment or written approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Applicants must not have applied for New Zealand or Australian permanent residency. Applicants must not seek or apply for permanent residency or a work permit for New Zealand, Australia or any other country while on scholarship.

Note: The New Zealand Aid Programme has the right to make a final decision on the offering of New Zealand Aid Programme’s scholarships. Scholarship Opportunities

The Larry Adams Scholarship in Public Policy

The Adams Scholarship, named in honor of former UCSB Professor Larry Adams, recognizes the importance of local internships and the benefit that such experiences can have for UCSB students. The scholarship is given to a selected upper division political science major serving as an unpaid intern in a local government agency or in the local office of a state or federal elected official or agency. The stipend is awarded for a single quarter and the award varies from quarter to quarter.

Louis Lancaster Scholarship for International Studies

The Lancaster Scholarship is a financial scholarship for undergraduate students majoring in Political Science with a strong interest in international relations. Students must be in residence at UCSB for the award academic year.

How many applied?

There were 148 applications from 66 applicants (applicants could apply for a scholarship for more than one program). In total, 15 scholarships were awarded.

How were applications reviewed?

All applications were assessed by a selection committee, taking into consideration the relevance and quality of the personal motivation letter and CV. Universities have also been offered the opportunity to prioritize applicants. Academic qualifications were evaluated during the admission process by University Admissions in Sweden and universities and were therefore not a criteria in the selection of scholarship recipients.

What's next?

Applicants who have been awarded a scholarship will receive a formal confirmation of the scholarship offer by email. Please be sure to follow all instructions given. It is also very important that you accept your admission offer for the program you were awarded a scholarship to on Universityadmissions.se. You can do this by logging into your account there and answering "Yes" to the program. The deadline for accepting your admission offer is April 8, 2013.

You must officially accept your scholarship offer from The Swedish Institute by April 19, 2013.

Unfortunately, due to the very large number of applications we have received, we are unable to answer questions about individual applications. We thank you for your understanding.

Countries

The program is open to candidates from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Serbia.

Students from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia are no longer eligible for this scholarship, but are now eligible to apply for The Swedish Institute Study Scholarship.

For the academic year of 2013/2014 about 10 scholarships will be offered. For the academic year of 2012/2013 we received 300 applications and a total of 11 scholarships were granted.

The applications are assessed by a selection committee taking into consideration the relevance and quality of the personal motivation letter and CV. Academic merits are already evaluated by the universities in the admission round and is not a criteria for scholarships.

Who is eligible?

The scholarships are intended for students from the above mentioned target group for full time studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester, August 2013. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

Scholarships cannot be granted to students who:

Have already lived in Sweden for two years or more, previous to the scholarship period.
Have a permanent residence or work permit in Sweden.

How to apply

The scholarship application period for the academic year 2013/2014 is now open. The deadline for applying is February 11, 2013. A list of successful candidates will be published on www.studyinsweden.se before deadline to accept your place at the study program atwww.universityadmissions.se.

The eligible master programs are within the area of social science and environmental studies and have been selected by the Swedish universities. The list of eligible study programs will be published on December 1, 2012 and can be found here.

1. Apply for a study program at a Swedish host university by using the Swedish official online application service for academic studies in Sweden at www.universityadmissions.se. This has to be done before the student can apply for a SI scholarship. Please observe that the personal application number retrieved in the confirmation from your study program registration has to be used when applying for a scholarship in the next step.

2. Submit the payment of your application fee towww.universityadmissions.se.

3. Apply for a scholarship. This step can only be taken once having successfully registered an application for a study program at a Swedish university. Up to four programs can be applied for in order to maximize the chances to get admitted. In this case the candidate has to make a separate scholarship application to each of the study programs.

Scholarship benefits and period

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month.

The scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in the fall semester 2013 (August) and is granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time, but will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that study results are satisfactory.

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members.

The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study program period nor can the scholarship be transferred to another study program and/or university.

SI Network for Future Global Leaders

All Swedish Institute scholarship holders are invited to become members of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders – a network that offers unique opportunities during and after the stay in Sweden. Together with other talented people from all around the world, the scholarship holder is able to take part in a variety of events, exchange ideas and create networks that benefit both to career and personal development.

Travel grants

Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 5,000 and is meant to cover also the return flight.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship Retention Data for 2011 Entering Class

Per ABA Standard 509, law schools are asked to post data on their web sites regarding conditional scholarship retention. Standard 509 defines a "conditional scholarship" as "any financial aid award, the retention of which is dependent upon the student maintaining a minimum grade point average or class standing, other than that ordinarily required to remain in academic good standing." Some Vermont Law School scholarship awards fit this definition, and admitted students are informed of the grade point average criteria for their scholarship in their scholarship awards letter. Environmental Law Center International Scholarship

The ELC International Scholarship is awarded to one or more international LLM candidates each year. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide international students who are not eligible for financial aid in the United States the opportunity to study environmental law at Vermont Law School.

Application Process

Applicants for the ELC International Scholarship must submit a letter describing their qualifications, experience, and need. This letter is due along with the completed application to the LLM degree program on March 1st. Applicants will be notified in early April whether they have been awarded the fellowship and the amount of the award.

George Perkins Marsh Conservation Scholarship

The Marsh Scholarship is awarded to one or more MELP or LLM in Environmental Law candidates each year. The Environmental Law Center welcomes applications from candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship as exemplified by the works of George Perkins Marsh and as reflected in the ELC's Mission Statement.

Application Process

Applicants for the Marsh Scholarship must submit a letter describing their qualifications, experience, and commitment to public service. This letter is due along with the completed admissions application to the MELP or LLM in Environmental Law degree program by March 1st. Applicants will be notified in early April.

First Nations Scholarship

Vermont Law School is committed to helping tribal governments and the people of Indian communities deal with the challenges of protecting their environments. In addition to the First Nations Environmental Law Scholarship, the faculty of Vermont Law School can help students to fashion individualized educational experiences in the field of Indian country environmental law, such as internships with intertribal organizations and independent research projects.

The purpose of the scholarship is to enable members of federally recognized Indian tribes to pursue careers in environmental management and resource conservation, as well as to assist them in developing the legal and institutional framework to administer environmental programs throughout Indian country. MELP and LLM in Environmental Law students learn the basics of pollution control, land use, and resource allocation, as well as more sophisticated concepts of pollution prevention, ecosystem management, and international law. Special courses dealing with the unique jurisdictional and cultural aspects of Indian Country environmental issues are also offered.

The First Nations Environmental Law Scholarship provides financial assistance for tuition to two or more candidates admitted to the MELP or LLM in Environmental Law degree each year.

Application Process

Applicants for the First Nations Scholarship must submit a letter describing their qualifications, experience, and commitment to public service. This letter is due along with the completed admissions application to the MELP or LLM in Environmental Law degree program by March 1st. Applicants will be notified in early April.

Outside Scholarships

Students who receive private scholarships from outside sources must report these scholarships to the Financial Aid Office. We are required to include all outside scholarships as part of your financial aid award and must also count them toward meeting financial need.

In cases where the receipt of an outside scholarship(s) impacts a student's financial aid award, we reduce the loan program rather than reducing other scholarships. Once you have notified us of any outside scholarships received, we will adjust the financial aid award and send a revised financial aid award notice.

University of Nebraska 2013-2014 Freshman Scholarships - 2013-2014 Freshman Scholarships is obtainable to Non-Resident Students. The time period “Non-Resident” refers to students who have graduated from US prime faculties outside of the state of Nebraska.

All first year students who apply for normal admission to the University of Nebraska at Kearney can be evaluated for scholarship eligibility according to information provided with the application for admission. Moreover, UNK notifies students of scholarship awards shortly after they have been admitted to the university.

University of Nebraska 2013-2014 Freshman Scholarships

The term "Non-Resident" refers to students who have graduated from U.S. high schools outside of the state of Nebraska. Students coming to UNK from outside of the U.S. may click here to learn about International Student scholarship opportunities.

All first year students who apply for regular admission to the University of Nebraska at Kearney will be evaluated for scholarship eligibility based on information supplied with the application for admission. Scholarships requiring separate applications are specified in the descriptions below. Typically, UNK notifies students of scholarship awards shortly after they have been admitted to the university.

Please note: The list of scholarships found below may not be a complete listing of scholarships available to first year students. Depending on the availability of scholarship funding, UNK may award additional scholarships to recognize high academic achievement or potential.

Academic Scholarship Awards

When determining scholarship eligibility for incoming freshmen, UNK uses class rank and ACT/SAT scores submitted to the university by official sources (high school transcripts or test scores sent to UNK from ACT/SAT per the student's request). The deadline to qualify for most freshman scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year is February 1, 2013. It is the student's responsibility to make sure this information is submitted on time.

If a student receives new ACT/SAT scores after originally submitting information to UNK, UNK will reevaluate a scholarship award on the basis of the new ACT/SAT scores only IF those scores are sent automatically to the university by ACT/SAT. Scholarship awards will NOT be automatically reevaluated if new information is submitted by another source, such as a high school transcript. If a student's new score information is submitted to UNK via a high school transcript, the student must request a reevaluation of the scholarship award by writing to the Freshmen Scholarship Committee, c/o the Office of Financial Aid. No scholarship awards will be reevaluated on the basis of information submitted to UNK after the February 1, 2013 scholarship deadline.

In order to be considered for any academic scholarship awards, a new student must meet the following minimum criteria:

1) Be admitted to UNK by February 1, 2013;

2) Receive a minimum composite score of 23 on the ACT (1070 on the SAT); and

3) Be ranked in the top 30% of the high school graduating class.

UNK uses a "Scholarship Index" to determine eligibility for the following scholarship. The index combines the ACT score and class rank stated on the official high school transcript at the time of admission to determine if a student qualifies for the scholarship.

Blue & Gold Scholarship: Full waiver of tuition awarded to non-resident students with a scholarship index of 100 to 87. The scholarship is renewable for up to 125 credit hours at UNK.

Other scholarships include:

Non-Resident Scholarship: Pays the difference between resident and non-resident tuition. It is renewable for up to eight semesters. To be eligible, a student must meet TWO of the following criteria:

1) rank in the top 25% of high school graduating class;

2) have an ACT composite score of at least 23 (1070 on the SAT);

3) earn a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.5.

A student must be admitted to UNK by August 1, 2013 to be eligible for this scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.

If these merit qualifiers listed above are not met, there are some other criteria that may be met to qualify for the Non-Resident scholarship. The application must be submitted by August 1, 2013 to be considered for the scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.

Nebraska Legacy Scholarship: Pays the difference between resident and non-resident tuition for non-resident students whose parent(s) graduated from one of the University of Nebraska campuses. To qualify, a student must rank in the upper 1/3 (33%) of their high school graduating class OR have a minimum composite score of 24 on the ACT (1100 on the SAT). This scholarship is renewable. Students must be admitted to UNK by May 1, 2013 to qualify.

Multicultural Community Service Scholarship: Designed to provide students an opportunity to serve UNK by establishing a diverse and lively community. Recipients of this scholarship will receive a full tuition waiver up to 15 credit hours per semester. This scholarship is renewable for up to eight regular semesters and two summer terms. Recipients will be selected primarily on the basis of leadership in the multicultural community through participation in school and community activities. Applicants must complete the Multicultural Community Service Scholarship Application and be admitted to UNK by February 1, 2013.

Merit Awards: Tuition waivers ranging from $500 to $1,000 per year which may be awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement or potential, excellence in leadership or student/community activities, special experiences that will enrich campus life, or other evidence of potential to succeed in college. Students should submit a letter by February 1, 2013 detailing their attributes to the Freshman Scholarship Committee, c/o the Office of Financial Aid to be considered for UNK Merit Awards.

PROGRAMS

1. DOST-SEI Benefit Scholarship Application

The DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Software, before referred to as the NSDB or NSTA Scholarship, all started in 1958. Merit students pursue precedence courses within the fundamental sciences, engineering, other implemented technological know-how and technology and mathematics at identified universities.

Criteria of Eligibility:

Belong to the upper 5% of the high school graduating class;
Be a natural born Filipino citizen;
Be in good health;
Be of good moral character; and,
Be a qualifier of the S&T scholarship exam

2. RA 7687 S&T Scholarship Program

Republic Act No. 7687, also known as the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, provides for scholarships to talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status does not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators. Qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, applied sciences, engineering, science and mathematics teaching, technology and technical courses.

Criteria of Eligibility:

Be a poor, talented and deserving student who belongs to a family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of certain indicators as approved by the Advisory Committee on the S&T scholarships;
Be a member of the top 5% of the regular high school graduating class, or a member of the graduating class of a DOST-SEI identified or DepEd-recognized science high school;
Be a natural born Filipino citizen;
Be a resident of the municipality for the last 4 years as attested by the barangay/school records;
Be of good moral character and in good health;
Be a qualifier of the S&T scholarship exam.

Philippine Department of Science and Technology Scholarship Programs 2013-2014

3. Junior Level Science Scholarship Program

These are scholarship grants to qualified third year students who are enrolled in priority engineering courses and in basic and applied sciences at identified universities and colleges.

Criteria of Eligibility:

A regular 3rd year student in a priority S&T course at an identified university;
Must have a grade of 83% or better in Math and Science and no failing grade in any academic subject;
Not more than 21 years old;
Not a recipient of any other scholarships except tuition fees supplement; and,
Must pass the qualifying examination and second level screening.

4. Accelerated S&T Human Resource Development Program

Objectives:

To help improve the country’s global competitiveness and capability to innovate through alternative approaches on HRD in S&T;
To accelerate the production of high-level human resources needed for S&T activities particularly in the area of R&D

6. Philippine Science High School

The Philippine Science High School System consists of schools, which offer scholarships to deserving students who are trained under a curriculum designed to prepare them for careers in science and technology. The PSHS System is one of the agencies of the DOST contributing to the expansion and development of the country’s scientific and technological manpower.

Merit Scholarships

Merit Scholarships for New Incoming Students 2013-2014 - The above scholarships are offered in accordance with the applying for admission to NIU. A few scholarships are aggressive and might not be presented to all qualified students. Students must meet all academic criteria, together with both composite ACT rating (or SAT similar) and either the category rank or equivalent grade point reasonable using a 4.zero scale.

Scholarships will be awarded as long as funds remain available - students should be admitted to NIU for fall 2013 by December 1, 2012 to be considered for the maximum scholarship amount.

Students intending to enroll in Spring 2013 must be admitted by October 1, 2012 in order to receive consideration for merit scholarships. Due to limited funding, not all qualifed students may receive awards.

Admitted students will be awarded the highest level scholarship for which they are eligible, based on available funding. Other than the Out-of-State Huskie Scholarship, the Huskie Legacy Award, and the 4 +3 Pre-law Scholarship, merit scholarships cannot be combined with other merit scholarships on this list. The University Scholars award cannot be combined with any other award.

Transfer students are eligible for the NIU Transfer Scholarship, the Out-of-State Huskie Scholarship, and the Huskie Legacy Award, as funds remain available. In addition, an application for the Transfer Residential Scholarship will be available in the spring.

Students must be enrolled full-time at NIU in order to be eligible to receive any scholarship offered. Scholarships will be applied toward tuition charges only.

The Scholarship Office and the Student Financial Aid Office will work together to maximize students' financial opportunities, but not all estimated awards may be utilized due to funding restrictions. Make sure to file your FAFSA (available January 1, 2013) by the priority filing date of March 1, 2013 to be considered for the most financial aid!
