For a bit of context, we left our home in Bulgaria around mid-January because we were tired of the cold weather.

I mean, Bulgaria is not cold at all compared to our home country of Canada… but there was a stretch of cold weather so we thought maybe we’d change things up a bit.

So we decided last minute to book a trip to Asia. We hadn’t been East since COVID… and we were really craving something different.

We booked our flights less than 2 weeks before flying out. We had to pack up our house, get in some last minute appointments, catch up on some work and we were off.

But what happened on this trip and the days leading up to it really surprised us.

From the minute we hit “book” on those flights… there was a welling inside of us. A feeling that we didn’t expect at all.

A feeling that maybe we forgot. And a feeling that might culminate in us changing our entire lives, surroundings, and business in the next few months.

Bali in particular seems to have some kind of power over us.

They say that this island is an “energy center”, and while I don’t know if that’s true… it does always seem to send ripples through our lives when we go there.

Before I get into that though, I want to share with you a little bit about the travels we did leading up to Bali.

It’s been a long time since us Goats have come on the blog just to share a travel update. So let’s start with a good old-fashioned “travel blog post”. You know? Like back in the day?

The Reason For The Trip

Before we get into the trip, why did we even go?

It all started because some of our best friends, Vivien & Aaron (who we met while we were pet sitting in Grenada) were getting married in Australia.

At first it was just going to be a quick 2 week trip over to Aus for the wedding and festivities, then back to Bulgaria.

But as anyone who’s been to Australia knows… it’s not close. So we figured… why not make a trip out of it.

That 2 week wedding trip quickly turned into 3 months+ as we kept adding new countries and destinations to the itinerary.

We decided we’d fly into Hanoi first because there was a great flight from Bulgaria to Hanoi.

Then we’d go to Taiwan because it’s a new country for us and only a short flight from Hanoi.

Then Bali to visit some of our other best friends, Tom & Anna… then onwards to Aus for the wedding.

And because you can’t go all the way down under and NOT go to New Zealand… we added that on too (plus New Zealand has some of the best fly fishing in the world… so you better believe half our luggage is full of my fishing gear).

And that’s when the trip went from being just about the wedding… to something entirely different.

It was about shifting gears. Stepping away from our familiar rhythm in Bulgaria and trying out the digital nomad life again.

Leaving Bulgaria

We’ve loved our time living in Bulgaria. To us, the country is just entering what we call “The Goldilocks Zone”.

There isn’t so much tourism that the magical places are ruined, and yet there is enough that there is a good amount of amenities and international diversity.

There are great restaurants, both local and foreign, there is a growing community of expats, there are beautiful places that are yet to be discovered, and some up-and-coming hotspots that are just starting to get on the tourists maps.

I love the mountains, the nature, and the incredible cuisine, which is a blend of Balkan, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern.

We have great Bulgarian friends and there is fantastic wine and fly fishing.

We also love it’s location. Right at the edge of Europe, Africa, and The Middle East, it’s surrounded by some of our favorite countries (like Greece and Turkey) as well as some we haven’t spent much time in yet like Romania and Serbia.

Plus it’s the perfect gateway to the rest of Europe.

In fact, it’s the location that’s kept us here for so long.

In the past 3 years that we’ve lived there, we’ve done plenty of trips, and in reality, we only really spend 6-8 months a year in Bulgaria.

The rest of the time we’ve been traveling around Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, or back to Canada.

But that’s basically been it. And those countries and regions are so “easy“.

They’re beautiful. They’re inspiring. They have the history, the food, the friendly people, the natural beauty.

But they don’t have that one thing that we’ve realized was missing from our lives since COVID.

Culture shock.

That feeling of being slightly uncomfortable, slightly disoriented… where the language sounds different, the rhythms of daily life don’t quite match what you’re used to, and even simple things force you to be present again.

It’s the kind of experience that wakes you up – not just as a traveler, but as a person… reminding you that there are places that just move to a different beat.

So when we hit “book” on those flights to Hanoi, Vietnam… we had this new surge of energy.

I was almost giddy about getting back to Asia!

It felt like we were back in 2008 about to embark on our first ever trip.

I guess because it had been so long, I just felt like this was going to be an entirely new type of travel for us – even though we’ve spent over 5 years total traveling and living around Asia.

We yearned for the sound of Asian languages, the hum of motorbikes on the street, the taste of foreign spices and fruits, the feeling of sitting on plastic chairs with a cold bottle of beer in hand, people watching on the busy streets.

This is what Asia is all about. We were finally going back. Finally going to where all our travels began. Our nomadic “home”.

Landing in Hanoi

We landed in Hanoi after a 24 hour total flight day. It was only supposed to be a 12 hour flight from Sofia, but when we landed in Istanbul at 1am for our planned 1.5 hour layover… we got some news.

Our next lag was delayed for 5 hours!

There was nothing we could do but sit in the lounge for the next six and a half hours and try to get some sleep.

We did manage to get some sleep, and actually even though the trip ended up taking a lot longer than expected, when we landed in Hanoi we were immediately charged with a new energy.

We arrived at night (which we always try to do to avoid jet lag) and so we checked into our Airbnb and went right to sleep.

The next morning we woke up early feeling refreshed and ready to check out the city.

Stepping out of our apartment building and onto the street, I couldn’t shake my goofy smile.

I was grinning ear to ear as we pushed through a sea of motorbikes to cross the road.

I was smiling as we got our first Vietnamese coffee and when we sat on our child-sized plastic stools to eat some mysterious and delicious street food.

And I was beaming when we got lost down a tiny alley for the first time and watched as the locals sat behind tiny metal tables, slicing fresh fish and arranging piles of herbs and vegetables for the afternoon rush.

It just felt like it was everything I had been waiting for for the past couple of weeks since we booked the flights.

Have you ever gone somewhere, done something, or felt a moment hit you where you suddenly thought… why has it taken me this long to do this again?

That was us in Vietnam. What took us so long to get back to Asia?

What took us so long to make it to Northern Vietnam?

We actually travelled to Vietnam on our very first trip. Back in 2008. It was our second country on the trip.

But shortly after arriving in Vietnam, Dariece got dengue fever (or some other brutal sickness) that rendered her bed-ridden for 10 days with a crazy high fever and no way to keep in fluids.

That delayed our trip, which meant we only made it as far north as Hue before our visa ran out. We always said we’d return, but it took us 18 years to do it!

In fact, 18 years almost to the day. We looked back at Dariece’s journal entries from that 2008 trip (yes somehow she still has them) and we realized that we left Vietnam 18 years ago on almost the exact same day as we were landing in 2026.

Crazy how the universe has these ways of drawing us back to places and the timing at which those things seem to happen.

Sometimes it feels quite serendipitous.

Halong Bay

Aside from wandering around Hanoi, eating incredible food, and meeting cool people, we knew we wanted to visit Halong Bay while we were in Vietnam.

This bay is a natural wonder of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s famous for its limestone karsts jutting out from emerald-green waters, creating one of the most surreal seascapes in Southeast Asia.

Cruises, yachts, and “junk boats” all ferry tourists around the islands and stop for snorkeling, sunset gazing, and squid fishing.

We’ve never actually done a cruise together, so we thought this would be a good time to splash out.

We booked a luxury cruise in a beautiful suite that had a king sized bed, a deck overlooking the sea, and a huge bathroom with a free-standing bath tub.

It was lovely! It wasn’t cheap, especially for Vientam, but none of the nicer Halong Bay cruise boats really are.

We paid $250 for the night including transport to and from Hanoi, all food and tours, kayaking, etc.

The trip was amazing.

While we had suffered through some of the coldest days on recent record in Hanoi (5°C / 41°F) and plenty of cloudy days and rain… as soon as we got to the boat the sky parted and 20°C / 60°F became the daily highs.

We spent a lot of time just chilling in our room on the deck looking out at the view.

But when we peeled ourself away from there, we’d go up to the top levels for delicious meals that were served by onboard chefs, or we’d be out on a kayaking trip or doing morning Tai Chi on the top deck of the ship.

I definitely would recommend that ship we went with, or at least visiting Halong Bay if you’re ever in Vietnam.

We had heard that there was a bunch of trash in the water that really took away from the experience, but our ship actually spent a lot of time in Lan Ha Bay.

I’m not sure if that bay is cleaner, or we just got lucky with currents, but we didn’t see any garbage besides one or two rogue plastic bags floating by in the water.

Heading to Taiwan

After a week in Vietnam, eating fantastic food, exploring the city, drinking at rooftop bars, listening to live music and cruising Halong Bay, we were off to Taipei.

We’ve been wanting to visit Taipei for years. And it was exciting to finally get to go.

When we landed it marked my 82nd country and Dariece’s 83rd (she visited Dominican Republic with a friend before we got together… I will catch up one day).

I have to say… were were both blown away by Taiwan.

Having lived in China for a year as English Teachers back in 2012-2013, we’ve always loved Chinese language, culture and … food.

Oh my god the food.

When we try to describe Chinese food to our friends and family who have never visited China, we always have to explain that Chinese food is nothing like the Americanized, deep-fried, Cantonese fusion dishes that we get in the west.

It’s not all chowmein, sweet and sour pork, ginger beef, spring rolls and fortune cookies.

Although aside from the American invention of the latter, the other things can be found in variations in different parts of China… the real cuisine is so much more diverse and refined.

If you want to taste layers of bold flavors that light up your pallet, then you have to try real, authentic Chinese food.

Of course, because Taiwan has such a long history with China and Japan, there is an incredible meeting point of these two world class cuisines that makes for one of the most incredible food destinations on the planet.

Fusion comfort dishes like Taiwanese beef noodle soup (牛肉麵) are the star, but you’ll also find street food legends like xiao long bao (小籠包 – broth-filled soup dumplings), gua bao (割包 – Taiwanese pork belly burger), Taiwanese popcorn chicken (鹽酥雞), and scallion pancakes (蔥油餅), along with some more unusual local favourites like oyster omelette (蚵仔煎).

There are also plenty of homey classics like lu rou fan (滷肉飯 – braised minced pork on rice) and three cup chicken (三杯雞 – soy-glazed chicken traditionally cooked in a clay pot).

I honestly think I had the best meal of my life in Taiwan, or at least one of the best.

It was at this little hole in the wall restaurant known for it’s “award-winning beef noodle soup” and I ordered 3 dishes that blew me away.

The beef noodle soup, the ground pork wontons in a soy sesame glaze, and the congealed ducks blood (I know it sounds weird) were phenomenal.

If you’re in Taipei, don’t miss that restaurant.

Aside from hanging out in and around Taipei, we wanted to see a bit more of Taiwan so we booked a day trip on GetYourGuide that would take us to Shifen, Jiufen, and Yehliu.

The destinations were fantastic, but the tour itself was absolutely terrible.

Normally we love GetYourGuide tours but this one we definitely don’t recommend.

We thought it was going to be a small guided group tour. When we arrived it was a massive bus of 50 people with only one guide.

You know these types of tours. The stick with the teddy bear on the end of a long pole, the microphone, the whole bit.

The guide spoke English the entire time, and even though we’ve lived in China for a year, and are therefore familiar with the accent, it was impossible to understand 99% of what was said.

On top of that, he didn’t give us ANY information. He just repeated the same things over and over again about 10 times before each stop.

He would simply repeat the time we were arriving, when we would leave, where the bus would be, and where the bathrooms were. Over and over again. For an hour before every stop.

It was so bad it was comical.

I’ll link the tour so you don’t make the same mistake we did.

But like I said, the stops were beautiful, so we just used the bus as a way to get to all of the places – we’d leave the group as soon as the bus arrived.

The stunning Shifen Waterfall surrounded by jungle clad hills, the town of Shifen with it’s Hanoi-like train street and Chinese lanterns, the mountainside old town of Juifen, and the beatiful rock formations of Yehliu.

I would definitely recommend checking this out on any trip to Taiwan, but just not on the above tour.

Taking public transport, a private driver, or even another GetYourGuide tour would be a much better option.

We really wanted to make it down to Taroko National Park as well but we just didn’t feel like we had time, plus some of the trails remain closed after a recent major earthquake.

South To Uluwatu, Bali

Every time we return to Bali we do it with a little bit of apprehension. Have our favorite spots been overdeveloped? How has this little island changed since our last visit?

And every time we we return, we’re slapped in the face with contradicting feelings.

On one hand, we see the overdevelopment.

We see the traffic getting worse.

We see them cutting down once lush jungles that were home to wildlife, or paving once vibrant green rice terraces with spas, gyms, cafes, and villas.

Bali is such a magical place, even today. But it’s flame is slowly being snuffed by overtourism, overdevelopment and a lack of regulation.

This is what we saw as we drove south from the airport towards Uluwatu. A 9 kilometer drive took us an astonishing 2 hours and 15 minutes thanks to the insanely dense traffic.

But as we neared Uluwatu, a cliffside surfer town, the traffic thinned and we started to see the charm of the place.

I would say Uluwatu is nearing the end of it’s goldilocks phase.

Just a couple of years ago this town was an up-and-comer. A quieter oasis miles from the chaos of Changuu, Bali’s most recent tourism casualty.

But now Uluwatu, or ‘Ulu’ as its often called, is in full swing.

Every mile of coastline has new villas, shops, restaurants, and spas being built. You can’t go anywhere in the town without hearing the deafening roar of construction.

And yet, when dodge traffic and walk along the sidewalkless streets, you can still see the beauty of this place.

It has everything you need. Bars, restaurants, health, wellness, beauty… it’s modern Bali life at it’s finest.

And while it may only have a couple of years left, currently it’s probably the best place in South Bali to visit.

As digital nomads, what struck us about Uluwatu was the lifestyle for people like us.

Our friends, Tom and Anna just bought a stunning villa there, so were were stoked the get to stay with them for a few nights.

Their location was down a quiet back street so there was zero noise, and it was far from the traffic of the main center of Uluwatu known as Bingin.

Their villa was gorgeous, but what we were really inspired by was the lifestyle there.

Morning coffees and coworking followed by spas, cold plunges, saunas, the gym, a massage, a bit more work, sunset drinks and then dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants in town. And of course, playing padel as well.

It was amazing. There was community, inspiration, health, beauty, the ocean… everything that someone needs to be happy.

And it really got us thinking about why we went into this life in the first place.

Yes we love Bulgaria, and we love our life there too.

We especially love our house – a large two story house at the foothills of the mountains with a nice car, a big back yard, and plenty of good hiking and fishing nearby.

But what it doesn’t have is the community. It doesn’t have the amenities. We can’t just go to a spa / gym with 3 different temperatures of cold plunge, a healthy onsite restaurant, a sauna, and coworking space.

We can’t join morning yoga classes on the ocean or do breathwork retreats surrounded by rice paddies.

On top of that, the Balinese people reminded us how great hospitality can make you feel welcome and even brighten your day sometimes.

The Balinese people, despite the obvious negative affects tourism has had on the island, still treat us like honoured guests.

They go out of the way to help us. They always greet us with a smile, and they’re genuinely interested in where we’re from, what we’re doing, why we’re in Bali and always… where we’re going next.

Bulgarian people are some of the coolest people I’ve met. Our friends, our neighbours, the people we know there, they’re just really great people…once you get to know them.

But the service industry in Bulgaria is still growing and there are plenty of times you will get poor service when you’re out for dinner or lunch, and people can be a bit standoffish at first, which can come off as “grumpy” to some visitors.

We definitely know better, but it was still amazing to feel the genuine kindness from strangers in Bali who would just wave at us as we walked by, or stop and talk to us for no reason.

These things all added up to make us really think about spending more time outside our home in Bulgaria in the coming years.

We don’t want to move away from Bulgaria, we still love it there, but we want to live more of a digital nomad life again.

One where we go to Bali for a few months every year, and maybe we spend some time in different parts of Asia like Vietnam and Thailand.

We loved working from cafes, meeting up with other entrepreneurs, going for massages and just living the nomad life that’s really only available at that level in Asia.

Our 5 Night Staycation in Bali

Instead of staying in the busy South of Bali the entire time, we wanted to get up north where we were hoping to still catch some of Bali’s magic… and we were blown away.

Going north brought us right back to 2009, the first time we ever visited Bali, and we were so happy to see that the island has retained some pockets of its former glory.

Ubud

The first stop was Ubud. The location of the Indonesia part of Eat Pray Love (we watched that movie again from our villa there).

A LOT has changed in Ubud since that movie was shot, and since we visited a few years prior to its release.

The center of the village is now bumper to bumper traffic, honking horns, vehicle fumes, and zooming motorbikes snaking their way through the cars and large trucks.

But we did find a couple of nice back streets that still had some Ubud energy to them, although between the warungs were countless ramen, smashed avocado cafes, matcha shops, and gift stores.

All the things that us tourists and digital nomads apparently need to have anywhere we go.

But what really blew us away about Ubud was where we stayed. About 10 minutes north of the city by bike, our private pool villa was set on the edge of the rice paddies.

Owned by a local Balinese man who grew up in Ubud and then built the villa after spending 10 years working in hotels in the USA, this place was probably one of the nicest Airbnbs we’ve ever stayed at in our lives.

A perfect blend of Balinese architecture, modern touches, and nature, it was so beautiful that we didn’t want to leave.

The infinity pool looked over the rice paddies, there was a kingsized bed, a full kitchen, and an open air bathroom with a free standing tub, a massive mirror, and a shower that looked like it was coming out of a jungle wall.

But what made it so special was the view. Because it didn’t just overlook one rice field, like so many Ubud villas – it looked out over an vista of rice paddies and palm trees.

Because the owner of the villa also owned the land in front of it, the view of the rice terraces was expansive.

There was islands of jungle, then more rice, then some palm trees, then further off more rice, and Mount Agung in the distance.

It really felt like the Ubud we remembered. So we spent most of our time there, and little time in town, aside from visiting with our friends Jen & Stevo for lunch, who we taught English with in China many years ago.

Stepping Back in Time in Sideman

After Ubud, we headed to Sideman. This place is famous for its rice terraces. While Ubud is slowly filling its rice fields with cement to build villas and hotels, Sideman is what Ubud was 20 years ago.

The daily life here still revolves around farming.

There are of course villas and hotels popping up everywhere and yes, even here the sound of chainsaws, hammers, and metal grinders is hard to ignore… but it’s almost silenced by the beauty of the area.

I can’t even explain this place and the videos and photos really don’t do it justice.

It’s so serenely beautiful that every time we looked out of the window of our 2 level “barn” accomodation, it felt like someone had turned on an Ai image of the landscape.

It just didn’t look real.

Mount Agung loomed dark beneath a blanket of clouds, while a winding river spilled from its foothills, carving through the deep valley below.

On either side of the rushing river, emerald hills rolled into the distance – broken only by the occasional palm or banana tree standing beside tiny bamboo-thatched farmer huts.

We spent hours walking through the rice fields which, because of the season of our visit, were actually planted with marigolds, corn, and peanuts between harvests.

It was absolute bliss. Walking through the uninterrupted fields of green we were given hope again that some of Bali’s magic has remained unchanged.

Sideman was like a time machine, transporting us right back to our backpacking days nearly 20 years ago when the Island of Bali was more jungle and rice terraces than it was strip malls and beach clubs.

Again we were talking about what it would be like to spend more time here. Maybe spending a few months in Uluwatu but taking more of these “staycations” to Ubud, Sideman, the deep jungle oasis of Munduk or the coastal calm of Candidasa.

Bali really does still have it all in so many ways.

Where do we go from here?

Geographically, after Bali we continue this 3 month adventure in Australia and then New Zealand, but beyond the map, this trip has left us with some bigger life questions we’re still trying to answer.

Do we want to keep living in Bulgaria for 6-8 months per year, or do we want to get back into a more digitally nomadic lifestyle?

Most of the members of our Remote Goats Community are building their businesses so that they can become digital nomads. That’s the ultimate goal for so many.

Have we been squandering it by living in one place so long?

Even though we’re over 40 now, there’s still a draw for that lifestyle. It’s always so exhilarating spending a few weeks or a few months in a place, and then moving on.

Getting to know a place. Having a group of friends. Being in an entrepreneurial hot spot. These are all things that we kind of miss living in Bulgaria.

Maybe we’re not fully ready to pack up and move yet, but what I do know is that this trip, and Bali in particular has planted a seed.

Something is growing inside of us and I think the Goats might be back on the road again soon.

We honestly aren’t sure yet… but what we do know is that this trip has been incredible so far, and we’re excited to see what the next few weeks has in store.

Due to ever-growing cities and the parasitic urbanization of natural lands, it can be hard to find remote backpacking destinations these days.

Luckily, there are still some places where the natural beauty of the untamed wilderness is all you can see for miles.

Here are some of the top locations for backpackers looking to get as far away from civilization as possible.

1. Lake Baikal, Russia

Baikal is the oldest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. It stretches 400 miles through south-eastern Siberia, just north of the Mongolian border, within the cleft where Asia is splitting apart. This split will become an ocean in many years to come.

Stunning Sights

Seals frequent the waters and rocky sides of the lake, basking in the open sun to watch visitors meander by. Olkhon Island is home to a rock formation, which used to be a cave, known as Shamanka Rock.

This site was once the place where shamans carried out sacrifices to the spirits of the island.

To this day, people continue to visit to experience its beauty and captivating history.

How to Get There

Lake Baikal is a breathtaking destination surrounded by the Siberian taiga forests and large snow-capped mountains. However, it is not the easiest place to reach.

The closest international airport is located in Irkutsk, which is also a stop on the famous Trans-Siberian Railway. From there, backpackers can travel to the nearby town of Listvyanka and hop on the Great Baikal Trail, which is still being completed by residents of the surrounding towns.

This will take you around the lakeshore – a trek lasting about three days – to the village of Bolshoye. There are places to camp along the way, as well as homestays if the weather proves unbearable.

Alternatively, to get to Olkhon Island, you can take a 7-hour bus/van ride for about $20 from Irkutsk to the ferry terminal. The ferry takes about 20 minutes to arrive at the island. Once on the island, the bus (van) will take you to your guesthouse.

Check out Nikita’s Homestead which includes room and board. This is the most “happening” place on the island.

2. Svalbard Archipelago, Norway

Located in a series of islands far above the Norwegian mainland, Svalbard is home to prowling Polar bears and nimble Arctic foxes. It sits far above the Arctic Circle and is inhabited by villagers who just love to interact with international visitors. This is definitely one of the more remote backpacking destinations.

Stunning Sights

Here, travelers can experience the Midnight Sun. “Between late May and mid-August, nowhere in the country experiences true darkness,” reports Lonely Planet. In Trondheim, for example, “the first stars aren’t visible until mid-August.”

Fata morgana is an unusual phenomenon that many parts of the world will never experience.

“The clear and pure Arctic air ensures that distant features do not appear out of focus. As a result, depth perception becomes impossible and the world takes on a strangely two-dimensional aspect, where distances are indeterminable,” Lonely Planet explains.

How to Get There

Traveling to the archipelago is easiest by flight from Oslo, Norway to Longyearbyen in Svalbard, Norway. From this tourist town full of friendly locals, there are hardly any roads that lead elsewhere. For this reason, locals and travelers alike must rent snowmobiles or boats to travel to distant towns.

Some travellers also choose to explore the surrounding fjords and glaciers aboard an Arctic cruise ship, which allows access to remote parts of the archipelago that are otherwise difficult to reach.

For backpackers, it is best to pick a warmer season for travel or go with an experienced backpacker who knows how to brave the arctic winters. Blogger Stevie of Stevie on the Move shares his experiences in Svalbard and gives tips on how to save money and where to stay during the trip.

3. Torres del Paine, Chile

This expansive national park, full of wildlife and extravagant landscapes, is nestled high above the Patagonian steppe. This land was a sheep ranch long before it was converted into a park for travelers.

Here you’ll find glacier lakes, incredible hiking trails, endless forest and roaring rivers. The scenery here truly is spectacular.

Stunning Sights

Aside from the towering steppe and park itself, this area holds a beauty unique to Chile. The crystal clear Lake Nordenskjold sits before the Salto Grande waterfall.

Many visitors venture here to trek the famous “O” circuit through the pristine landscape created by this large body of water.

Lake Pehoe is another popular trek due to its breathtaking view of the mountains of Cuernos del Paine.

How to Get There

This circuit is located in Patagonia, just Northeast of Punta Arenas.

It stretches between the Los Andes Mountain Range and the Patagonian Steppe in Ultima Esperanza Province. It is easiest to purchase a plane ticket and fly to Punta Arenas – or take a bus from Puerto Montt, near Santiago, to Punta Arenas.

Here is a detailed guide on how to arrive at your destination. Keep in mind that because this is such a rugged destination, there is some outdoor gear that you’ll need to pack with you.

This 49-mile-long trail allows trekkers to experience Iceland far away from the major cities and towns. It connects two nature reserves: Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork.

How to Get There

It is only possible to do this hike from mid-July to mid-September, since other months are typically too snowy. You can begin in Reykjavik and travel to Landmannalaugar by riding a Reykjavik Excursions bus.

5. Mount Rinjani, Indonesia

Located on Lombok Island in Rinjani National Park, this large mountain and active volcano is surrounded by lush rainforests. It is considered an incredibly difficult trek to the top, and many advise you to hire a guide to take you through the maze of forests.

Indonesia’s waterfalls are also an extravagant sight to behold. While it may be a good idea for you to mark their locations on a map before you set off, rest assured that they’re easy to stumble upon if you are exploring without a guide.

There are numerous volcanoes in Indonesia, but Mt. Rinjani is one of the most popular ones to visit.

You can hire a guide at your hostel or guesthouse, or go through a tour agent. Or, If you have a proper map and have sourced local advice and information, you can do the trek independently.

How to Get There

There are flights from Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya, as well as from Singapore to Lombok. (Lombok is the island where Mount Rinjani is located.)

6. Golden Bay, New Zealand

At the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand is a gorgeous remote place called Golden Bay. Whilst remaining relatively undiscovered, it has the kind of vibe that just draws you in. Plenty of backpackers plan to visit for a few days and end up staying weeks.

Life is really laid back here. Think barefoot beach walks and long cafe mornings with days shaped around the weather and tides rather than busy schedules.

Stunning Sights

Golden Bay is absolutely jam packed with natural beauty. There’s lots of wildlife and if you’re lucky enough you might even see some seal pups playing in the shallow tide. Wharariki Beach, with its dramatic rock formations and rolling dunes is maybe the main highlight.

But over the other side of the tip is Abel Tasman National Park with equally gorgeous golden beaches. There’s also the stunning Abel Tasman Coast Track to hike. Inland there’s forest walks and hidden swimming holes. Don’t miss the crystal clear freshwater Te Waikoropupū Springs – although you can’t swim in them.

How To Get There

There’s no airport near Golden Bay itself which helps keep visitor numbers low. Most backpackers drive from Nelson, crossing the winding Takaka Hill. It’s a seriously scenic journey with incredible viewpoints along the way and is all part of the charm of visiting Golden Bay.

7. Kyrgyzstan

This Central Asian nation is just starting to get the attention it deserves, but don’t worry, it’s still one of the top backpacking destinations for those looking to get away from it all.

Travel here and experience a unique culture, welcoming people, and pristine nature.

Stunning Sights

Explore Lake Issyk-Kul and its stunning shoreline, hike up to Ala Kul lake, go horseback riding to Song Kol Lake, and experience the mountain village of Arslanbob. There are numerous places to visit in Kyrgyzstan for those who love the outdoors.

For hiking and trekking, Jyrgalan is the up and coming destination. There are some new trails here waiting for you to explore, yurts for you to sleep in, and Kyrgyz hospitality to experience.

Of course, if you want to add to this epic destination, you can always tackle the Pamir Highway which runs from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan.

How To Get There

The capital city of Bishkek is actually really well connected. A quick search will show you various airlines and routes. Once you’re in Bishkek, a minibus can take you to Karakol and Lake Issyk-Kul. And, you can get to Jyrgalan from Lake Issyk-Kul in just 45 minutes by bus as well.

1. The Grand Canyon

As the inspiration for the state’s nickname, the Grand Canyon came in at the top of this list. The canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, over a mile deep at its lowest point, and is easily one of the coolest places in the US.

Because of its sheer size, visitors generally have to choose between the North Rim and the South Rim of the canyon.

The South Rim offers the quintessential Grand Canyon experience, including guided burro rides, paved paths, luxury hotels, savory restaurants, and a terrifying glass skywalk.

It’s also easy to access from major cities, making it a great road trip from Phoenix and Los Angeles.

The North Rim of the canyon is far quieter than the tourist-filled South Rim, and it has fewer man-made attractions.

On the other hand, the higher elevation offers a decidedly different view of the Grand Canyon. Instead of dramatic sunlit vistas, the North Rim offers quiet forests and secluded hikes.

The North Rim’s atmosphere is less concerned with tourism and more focused on the natural beauty of the canyon. Some popular North Rim destinations include North Kaibab Trail and Ribbon Falls.

2. Sedona – A Desert Village

Even though there are plenty of things to do in Phoenix (which is where I live), every time someone visits me, they ask the same thing: “When can we go to Sedona?”

Located north of Phoenix, this desert town is surrounded by red-rock cliffs, steep canyons, and dense pine forests — making it a highlight of any Arizona road trip.

When you’re ready to set out, head north on Interstate 17.

Along the way, you’ll pass Montezuma Castle National Monument, a group of preserved cliff dwellings that housed the Sinagua people more than 1,000 years ago.

You’ll also pass the V-Bar-V Heritage Site, the largest “rock art site” in Red Rocks Country.

The hiking in Sedona is legendary, so make sure you pack your boots and don’t miss these top desert hikes: Cathedral Rock, Devils Bridge, The Birthing Cave, and Soldiers Pass — to name a few.

Sedona itself is known for its thriving arts community and quaint, small-town vibe. Start your day off at the Coffee Pot Restaurant, a bustling café with an all-day-breakfast and 101 different types of omelet.

When you’ve had your fill, spend the day shopping for artisan goods at the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. This beautiful, outdoor shopping district features cobblestone streets, hand-blown glass, and gorgeous artisan jewelry.

For dinner, make a reservation at Heartline Café. My two favorite dishes are the bacon-hugged petit filet mignon and the pistachio-crusted chicken breast.

3. Tombstone – The Town Too Tough to Die

Wyatt Earp was a notorious gambler and sheriff who took part in the famous O.K. Corral shootout. Every Memorial Day, Tombstone honors his legacy with the Wyatt Earp Days celebration.

This two-day festival features staged gunfights, mock hangings, and a massive chili cookoff. Tombstone’s affinity for the Old West is apparent in everything from architecture to tourist attractions. It’s also the reason Tombstone was nicknamed “The Town Too Tough to Die.”

USA Today put it perfectly when they called Tombstone “the perfect blend of historical and tacky.” The O.K. Corral is just one of Tombstone’s historic landmarks, though.

History buffs should also visit the Bird Cage Theatre Museum, a former brothel that was preserved to show the honest nature of the premises.

Last, but not least, pay a visit to Boot Hill Graveyard, Tombstone’s first cemetery. This historic site was said to be the graveyard for people who “died with their boots on.”

You can reach Tombstone from Phoenix in about 3 hours, or from Tuscon in just a little over an hour.

4. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Monument Valley is located along the border between Arizona and Utah — so close that it’s featured on Utah’s official travel website. Nice trick, Utah, but you’re not fooling anyone!

Monument Valley is one of the Copper State’s most valuable treasures.

This towering, sandstone rock formation has set the stage for so many westerns that one travel writer said, “Its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.”

There are plenty of day trips from Sedona or Flagstaff, and guided tours, but I prefer to drive along the 17-mile road at my own pace. Admission to the park is $20 per vehicle, but there is no time limit.

If it’s in your budget, you should also consider staying the night at the View, the only hotel in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. These luxury accommodations offer unparalleled views of the entire valley, especially at sunset and sunrise.

This list will finish the same way it began — with a stunning rock formation created by millions of years of water erosion. Antelope Canyon is a magnificent slot canyon located to the east of Page in northern Arizona and is definitely one of the most incredible places to visit in the USA.

The canyon’s wavy corridors have been featured in several nature documentaries, including Louie Schwartzberg’s Moving Art series.

Throughout the day, sunshine illuminates the canyon’s 120-foot walls and throws shadows around every corner.

If you’re thinking about visiting, you should know that guided tours are the only way to explore the canyon.

A short drive away, Lake Powell offers hiking, climbing, and rappelling in gorgeous sandstone canyons. While Lake Powell is actually located in Utah, the closest lodging is located in Page, Arizona.

Come to think of it, Lake Powell isn’t even a lake, it’s a reservoir. Oh well! You won’t be thinking about semantics when you’re boating, swimming, and waterskiing in the Glen Canyon National Recreation area.

If you’re planning a visit to both Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell, make sure to set aside at least two days. One day isn’t enough time to experience everything these natural wonders have to offer.

The 240-hour course includes the entire 180-hour TEFL training as well as additional training for teaching English exam preparation.

This course includes a 30-hour module to help students prepare for the IELTS exam and a 30-hour module to help students prepare for the TOEIC exam.

There are a few types of TEFL certifications, and the acronyms can be a bit confusing!

1.TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language). This certification is used worldwide for teachers who want to teach English abroad to foreign students (or teach English online to foreign students). Example: A Canadian teaching English in China, or an American teaching English as a second language in Mexico.

2. TESL/TESOL (Teach English as a Second Language). This certification is used by those who are teaching English in their own country to someone who needs to learn English as their second language. Example: A Brit teaching English to immigrants in England. 

3. CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). CELTA is the more expensive, “posh” version of TESOL, and is specific to Cambridge University.

Now that that’s out of the way, we’re going to focus on TEFL Certifications in this article. Having a TEFL certificate will allow you to apply for jobs teaching English in foreign countries or jobs teaching English online.

The typical curriculum covers teaching fundamentals, how to create lesson plans, and how to instruct students in English grammar, reading, speaking, and writing. 

Who Needs a TEFL Certification? 

Anyone who plans to teach English abroad or teach English online should look into getting their TEFL certification. TEFL certificates are widely known and valued in the English teaching industry.

I got my TEFL certificate with International TEFL Academy even though I already had a Master’s in Teaching and three years of formal classroom experience. I didn’t want to disqualify myself from a potential job just because I lacked the credentials they required. 

Most in-person English teaching jobs around the world want teachers who have a TEFL certification. Even in places where a TEFL isn’t required, you’ll likely get a higher pay rate and have more employment options if you have one.

Will I Need a TEFL Certification to Teach Online?

Most of the high-paying online English teaching companies require you to have a TEFL certification.

A few years ago, online ESL companies were mainly concerned with hiring native English speakers. Now, with more regulations on online teaching and more competition between companies, requirements are stricter. 

It’s becoming common for online English companies to require that all teachers have a TEFL certificate. China recently passed a law that says all online English teachers must either have a TEFL certification or a traditional teaching license.

Considering how many of the large online ESL companies cater to the Chinese market, you can imagine how many teachers were impacted.

But even if your online teaching company doesn’t require a TEFL certificate, it’s a good idea to get one anyway. With a TEFL certificate, you’ll have two main advantages: 

1. ESL Teaching Skills 

During your TEFL course online, you’ll learn best teaching practices that will improve your skills as an educator. 

A lot of people think “If I speak English, I can teach it, right?” But this isn’t the case. Teaching a language is very different from speaking a language. Some people who speak excellent English don’t make great teachers. 

Teaching, like any skill, must be learned and practiced. In a TEFL certification online course, you’ll have the opportunity to do exactly that. 

Getting a TEFL certification is especially important if you don’t have a formal teaching background. You’ll want to gain as much practical teaching knowledge as possible so you can impress your future students and employers. 

2. Job Security

If for some reason your online ESL company changes its requirements, having your TEFL certification could be the difference between keeping your job and having to find another one. 

If you need to switch companies at some point during your online teaching career, having your TEFL certification already taken care of means you’ll have more options. 

Also, if you ever decided to transition into in-person teaching, you would already have the certification you need. Even if you have online teaching experience, most schools still need to see proof of your TEFL course completion for you to be eligible to teach. 

For me, having a TEFL certificate feels like a security net. I know that if I’m ever unable to teach online for some reason, I can use my TEFL certificate to get a job teaching abroad instead. Having TEFL credentials only improves your choices.

Which TEFL Course is The Best?

In short, if you’re looking for a Level 5 TEFL course, check out the TEFL Academy. A quick Google search will show you that there are dozens of online TEFL courses out there, so it can be difficult to know which one is best for you. There are a few things to consider when making your decision.

1. Accreditation 

In order for your TEFL certification to have any meaning, it needs to be accredited. 

You may have seen ads on discount websites for $5 TEFL courses or even websites offering Free TEFL courses. Unfortunately, these usually are not accredited and won’t do you much good when it’s time to get hired. Although, there are some legitimate cheap TEFL courses available, see our list here. 

While you might be able to get away with an unaccredited TEFL course with some uninformed employers, I wouldn’t recommend doing that. It’s not worth risking your job if someone discovered that your certification wasn’t legitimate.

Taking accredited TEFL courses online means that a third party approved the curriculum and teaching methodologies of the course.

You’ll know for sure that what you’re learning is correct and up to date. This helps you become a more effective English teacher in the long run.

2. Number Of Hours 

When you start looking into TEFL courses, you’ll see the number of hours for the course. This represents the number of hours you will study to get the certification. In general, you want a course that offers at least 120 hours.

Now, if you do a self-paced online TEFL course, there’s a very good chance you’ll finish in less than 120 hours. But that 120-hour course will cover much more content than a 40-hour or 60-hour course.

Most TEFL employers want to see the 120-hour certificate. 

3. Online, In-Person, and Combination Courses

TEFL courses fall into three categories: online, in-person, and hybrid courses that combine the two.

Online TEFL Courses: 

Online TEFL courses are great if you need schedule and location flexibility.

Before I started teaching online and traveling, I did an online TEFL course because it worked out well with my job. I was able to go to work during the day and complete my TEFL course online in the evenings and on weekends. 

Online TEFL courses are often self-paced and may take longer to complete than in-person TEFL courses. They are also usually less expensive. 

The downside of choosing an online TEFL course is that you won’t get real-time demonstrations and feedback on your teaching.

While your course might include video content, there’s no replacement for actually standing in front of people and applying the material. This is where In-Person TEFL courses shine.

In-Person TEFL Courses:

With an in-person course, you’ll do all your training and practical student teaching during a shorter time frame, usually a few weeks. You can also choose to do your TEFL training abroad, meaning you’ll get to explore a new place while learning new skills. 

In-person TEFL courses are better for those who want to get TEFL certified as soon as possible. You’ll also leave with more experience teaching in real life.

The benefit is that you’ll be ready to start teaching sooner, have more practical experience, experience living in a new country, receive job placement assistance in that country afterward, and meet other aspiring TEFL teachers in your class. Hybrid Or Combination Courses:

The third option is to combine online and in-person elements into a hybrid or combination class. With these class formats, you’ll do most of the written work online independently.

Then, your TEFL company will arrange opportunities for you to do in-person teaching days, possibly with other students. This means you’ll get a chance to apply what you’ve learned and receive feedback before applying for teaching jobs. 

4. Practicum Teaching

Some TEFL courses will also include a practical teaching component. During your practicum, you will either practice teaching a lesson to real students or observe English lessons taught by established teachers. 

Practicum experience can also be tutoring one-on-one, student teaching, or volunteering with a local organization that offers English classes. 

Not all TEFL courses have a practical teaching component. But it’s a good idea to consider one that does if you want to get some hands-on teaching experience before diving headfirst into the classroom.

As the third largest city in the country, Izmir has a laid-back, student-like vibe, but it’s far from lacking in substance.

My husband is from Aydin, which is around an hour’s drive away from Izmir. As such, we often visit and spend a few days or even a month there occasionally.

It’s a place that’s so endearing, I never want to leave, and because there are so many places to see in Izmir, it never gets boring. It’s easy to see why this is such a must-visit destination.

This entire part of Turkey is like an open-air museum, with plenty of Greek-era history to check out. One of the most popular Izmir attractions is nearby Ephesus, one of my favorite places in the whole world.

By the end of this guide, I hope you’ll have fallen in love with the idea of visiting Izmir, just as much as I love it in real life.

Best Things To Do in Izmir

First things first: Izmir is a large city, so you’re going to need to use public transport, taxis, or drive to get around. Don’t be worried about that, however, as it’s all pretty easy to do. The best sightseeing in Izmir is in the Alsancak/Konak area, but there are many other areas worth exploring.

There are some great day trips just outside the city and with so many top things to do in Izmir itself, you’re going to want to narrow down your choices. That’s where my handy advice comes in useful!

1. Konak Square & Izmir Clock Tower

One of the most famous places to visit in Izmir is Konak Square, which is also home to the famous Izmir Clock Tower, built in 1901. The square itself is a vibrant spot where people meet to chat, children play, and street musicians perform. It’s a busy part of the city, and the clock tower is always surrounded by many people taking photographs.

I was shocked at how well-preserved the tower is, and the design is so intricate. This is definitely one of the best free things to do in Izmir, and the fact that there are so many delicious street food vendors around just adds to the attraction.

2. Walk Along the Kordon

One of the top attractions in Izmir is the Kordon – a 1.5km long waterside promenade that originates from the 1850s, running from Alsancak all the way down past the city center. This is one of the coolest things to do in Izmir, especially on a sunny day.

You’ll see many locals just wandering around and enjoying the weather, but you can also hire a bike (there are cycle lanes), try street food, have a picnic on the grassed areas, or take the old-fashioned tram. This is such a picturesque area, so taking some snaps of your surroundings is a must.

3. Visit Kemeraltı Çarşısı

One of the top things to see in Izmir city center is Kemeraltı Çarşısı – a huge open marketplace where you can buy pretty much everything you can think of. This is also a great spot for traditional souvenirs, such as Turkish delight, spices, and textiles.

From personal experience, this area is incredibly busy, and it’s important to keep hold of your children if you’re traveling as a family; the bazaar is narrow and winding, and it’s very easy to get lost.

Also, do keep hold of your bag here; it’s not unsafe, but it is a hotspot for pick-pockets, and it’s best to be safe rather than sorry, by taking precautions.

Out of all the things to do in Izmir, this is one of the most authentic. You’ll need to haggle, so start practicing now, and you’ll grab the best bargains to take back home with you.

4. A Day Trip to Ephesus

I’ve been to a lot of places in Turkey, and most of them blew me away, but Ephesus was a totally different beast. This place is so amazing and stunningly beautiful, and it’s one of the top places to visit near Izmir.

Dating back to the 10th century BC, this was one of the most important and busiest cities of its time, and the ruins still stand extremely well-preserved today.

Many day and half-day tours go to Ephesus from Izmir, and you’ll typically have a guide with you to help you understand what you’re seeing. If not, there are signs with information everywhere, but I highly recommend you take your time here. It’s a huge space, and it can get very crowded during the summer months. If you can, head to Ephesus during the shoulder months or even the winter. There’s very little shade, which makes visiting in the peak summer months quite uncomfortable. This is such a wonderful place, you don’t want the weather to spoil it.

5. Shop at Forum Bornova

If you get the urge to splash the cash a little, a visit to Forum Bornova is one of the best things to do in Izmir. Packed with domestic and international stores, you’ll find everything you’re looking for here, and probably a lot more besides.

This is an open-air shopping mall, and it’s always decorated for various events, including New Year. There are often exhibits running and lots of things to do at any given time. It’s also packed with restaurants and coffee shops, so you can take your time browsing and enjoy a few pitstops along the way.

6. Eat Street Food in Alsancak

Trying local street food is one of my favorite things to do no matter where I am in the world, but I found some fantastic options in Alsancak. This part of the city is lively and vibrant no matter the time of day, so you’re sure to find lots of different foods to suit your taste.

Make sure you give the famous Izmir bombası a try; Çelebi Unlu Mamuller is the best place to go, (there’s always a huge queue outside, which says a lot!). And a word of advice: if you order it warm, be patient – don’t be like me and burn your mouth! It’s packed with chocolate and will definitely give you a sugar rush.

7. Visit Hisar Mosque

Built between 1592 and 1598, Hisar Mosque is one of the top places to visit in Izmir, and it’s right in the heart of the city center. Back in Ottoman times, this was the city’s largest mosque, and it still stands proud today, stunningly beautiful in its architecture.

Above the main door, you’ll see the famous inscription in gold leaf: “Whoever goes in there will be safe.” The mosque complex is large and intricately decorated. It’s a serene and calm place in the middle of the city and a wonderful place to explore, whether you’ve been to a mosque before or not.

If you aren’t familiar with mosque etiquette, you’ll need to wear respectable clothes, (no shorts or vest tops). You’ll need to cover your head with a scarf or pashmina if you’re a woman, and everyone needs to take off their shoes, so make sure you’ve got some socks with you. Once inside, spend some time in quiet contemplation and admire the beautiful architecture.

8. Agora Open Air Museum

The area in and around Izmir is packed with history, and so much of it is open to explore. Visiting Agora Open Air Museum is one of the best things to do in Izmir for families because it’s so large and easy to walk around. Children will love checking out the ruins and hiding around the columns while learning something along the way.

I love old things like this, and I particularly enjoyed visiting this huge museum. It’s conveniently located too, unlike Ephesus which you need to travel to.

It was originally built in the 4th century by the Greeks but, like many buildings of its time, it was devastated by an earthquake. However, Roman Emperor Aurelius demanded it be rebuilt and it became one of the most important Roman sites thereafter.

This is one of the quicker things to see in Izmir; around 1.5 hours is enough time to spare, so you can easily combine this with something else to fill up your day.

9. Check Out the Sunset from Pasaport

As you’re walking along the Kordon, one of the top things to do in Izmir for couples is to stop around sunset and check out the golden hues from Pasaport Pier. There are lots of small cafes and restaurants around here, so you could combine it with your evening meal, but the view is certainly something special.

I had a delicious meal at Margaux Restaurant while watching the sun go down, and it was definitely an evening to remember. But, even if you don’t want to stop to eat, it’s a great idea to just sit and watch the amazing show from Mother Nature. In terms of what to see in Izmir, I’d highly recommend this as a stop-off point, and it’s another place where you’ll need your camera.

10. Izmir Historic Elevator Building

One of the most unique things to do in Izmir will also give you plenty of amazing views at the same time. The Historic Elevator Building might not sound like much, but trust me, it’s one of the best things to do in Izmir, hands down.

The building itself dates back to 1907, when a Jewish businessman called Nesim Levi decided to create the elevator to allow people to move from street to street with more ease. These days, the building offers the most stunning, sweeping view over the whole of Izmir, and on a clear day, you can see for miles. It’s one of my favorite views by far.

There’s a restaurant at the top, and it’s a great spot to go if you’re looking for a romantic evening with your partner. It’s a good idea to reserve a table ahead of time, however – when I went it was extremely busy, and I was lucky to get a table.

11. Izmir Archaeology & Ethnography Museum

I love museums, and this one is packed with really interesting artifacts dating back as far as the Bronze Age. If you happen to get a rainy day during your visit, definitely head to the Izmir Archaeology & Ethnography Museum as it’s one of the top things to do in Izmir, come rain or shine. Slightly older children, perhaps age 10 and above, will enjoy exploring this museum.

For me, the most interesting piece was The Marble Statue of Androklos, which is said to have belonged to the founder of nearby Ephesus. There are lots of statues that were salvaged from shipwrecks around the area, and I spent a good two hours exploring this huge museum and its pieces. I felt like I really learned something too.

As one of the top tourist attractions in Izmir, it can get quite busy here, especially during the weekends and public holidays. I recommend you go early and then spend the rest of the day exploring the surrounding area.

12. Enjoy Nature at İnciraltı Kent Ormanı

I stumbled upon İnciraltı Kent Ormanı, a wonderful natural space, by accident but I’m so glad I did. If you’re visiting on a mild day and the sun is shining, this is one of the top things to do near Izmir, and so many people don’t even know it exists! However, you will need to walk fair distance or get a taxi to find it – it’s at the very end of the Kordon, so I recommend a taxi to save your feet.

İnciraltı Kent Ormanı is located in Balçova, where you’ll find a small, pebbly beach here too, so take your swim gear. The forest itself is lush and green, with plenty of shade during the hot days. There are small huts where you can have a picnic and even BBQ spaces to take advantage of, although do read the signs and abide by the rules to avoid the risk of fire.

For me, this is one of the best-hidden gem places to see in Izmir, where you can see right over the city, all the way back to Alsancak. Take some comfortable shoes for all the walking you’ll do, but breathing in that fresh forest air is a real treat.

13. Visit Ataturk Museum

A visit to the Ataturk Museum should definitely be on your list of things to do in Izmir. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, is the most important figure in Turkey’s history. You’ll find monuments dedicated to him across the country, but this particular museum helps you learn so much about his life and importance to Turkish people.

This museum is also centrally located in Konak, so it’s easy to combine a trip here with several spots for one full day in Izmir. For instance, you could walk along the Kordon, go to this museum, visit Konak Square and the Clock Tower in a day, and still have time to roam.

I really enjoyed this museum, and I learned a lot. The building itself is also important as it’s where Ataturk himself stayed while in Izmir. Inside you’ll find items that not only tell you who Ataturk was, but also personal items that help you learn more deeply about him.

14. Haggle at Kızlarağası Inn

Shopping is always fun, but when you have to haggle for your purchases, it’s even better. Who knows what souvenirs you’ll come away with? Kızlarağası Inn dates back to Ottoman times, in 1744, and the exterior architecture is pretty impressive, but inside is where you’ll find the treasure trove of shopping opportunities.

Now, I’m not a haggling natural; it took me some time to build my confidence, but now I can bargain with the best of them. The good thing about this particular spot is that it’s really easy to follow and once inside, you’ll know you’re somewhere atmospheric and historic.

This is another spot I found by accident, and I believe that just walking around this place is one of the best things to do in Izmir. You find so many things that seem hidden away, and they’re sure to enhance your visit.

15. Enjoy Izmir’s Vibrant Nightlife

No matter what kind of evening you’re after, there are so many things to do in Izmir at night. If you’re after a chilled-out time, head to the Kordon and simply take a walk, to enjoy the calm vibe and view. If you want something a little more vibrant, head to either Alsancak or Bornova. In these areas, you’ll find bars, restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars, and nightclubs aplenty.

I always stay in Alsancak because it’s so central, but equally because the nightlife is so good. Eko Pub is one of my favorite places to go in the evening and their bar snacks are delicious too. Cafe Del Mundo is another top spot, and it’s always a good night at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub.
