<p>Before delving into Kelowna’s distinct seasons, let’s first understand the two primary factors that significantly influences the city’s climate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Coast and Cascade mountain ranges have a major impact on Kelowna’s climate. Situated to the west of the city, they act as a massive barrier of air masses from the Pacific. Before these air masses reach the interior, these mountains have already stripped them bare of their moisture content in a process known as rain shadow effect. As a result, the region features a significantly drier climate compared with those in the Vancouver or Victoria coasts.</p>

<p>The Okanagan Lake is another major influence on Kelowna’s climate. This 84-mile (135-km) long body of water acts as a massive thermal battery that absorbs heat in the summer and stores warmth in the winter. Because of this, summer in Kelowna doesn’t reach the blistering extremes of the desert and in winter, the city doesn’t go into deep freeze.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kelowna’s winter season starts from November and ends in February. It features an <a href="https://www.kelowna.ca/our-community/about-kelowna/city-profile">average daytime winter-time high</a> temperature of 31℉ (-0.3℃) while the average low is at 18℉ (-7.7℃) in December and January. This is relatively mild by Canadian standards.</p>

<p>A distinct characteristic of Kelowna wintertime is the Valley Cloud. This is a persistent inversion layer where dense, cold air settles into the valley. The air traps moisture and creates a duvet-like covering of fog and cloud that can hang for weeks. The result is a city covered by gray overcast skies and a shroud of mist. Meanwhile, the surrounding mountains (like Big White) are bathed in champagne powder snow and bask in sunshine. It provides unique above the clouds experience for anyone up in the mountains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Precipitation in Kelowna BC</h2>



<p>When it comes to precipitation, Kelowna receives around one-third of what Vancouver receives. The city averages only <a href="https://www.kelowna.ca/our-community/about-kelowna/city-profile">366 mm (14.4 inches) of total precipitation annually</a>, with 280.7 mm (11 inches) of that as rain and 105.5 cm (41.5 inches) of that as snow. This precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. June records the most amount of precipitation, followed closely by May.</p>

<p>Georgia boasts a moderate climate all throughout the year, so in essence, there really is no bad time to visit the Peach State. In fact, the state is featured on a list of the top 10 states with the best weather year-round. But where is the <a href="https://www.ggg-ai.com/contact/office-locations/atlanta-georgia/">warmest place in Georgia, in winter</a>?</p>



<p>Spring in the Empire State of the South brings fair and bright weather and autumn features cool and crisp temperatures. Summer has the hottest and most humid temperatures, but rain showers typically come in the afternoon to help you cool off.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Even in the <a href="https://exploregeorgia.org/georgia-winter-trip-guide">coldest season</a>, the state’s temperatures range from an average low of 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) to an average high of 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius). Compared to the <a href="https://weather.com/science/weather-explainers/news/2024-10-23-average-temperatures-november-december-january">northern half of the country</a>, where high temperatures can drop to the 20s and low temperatures can dip below zero, Georgia still has it good. The state’s short but usually mild winters is due to its location at subtropical latitudes and proximity to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, according to the <a href="https://statesummaries.ncics.org/chapter/ga/">North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS)</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>But, if you’re still worried about getting cold, then head on out to some of the warmest places in Georgia during winter.&nbsp;</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Georgia’s Coastal Towns and Cities</h1>



<p>Some of the warmest places during winter in the Peach State are situated in its Coastal Plain region, in particular, those located near or beside the Atlantic Ocean. The climate in these areas is perhaps the mildest in the state thanks to what is known as the ocean moderation or maritime effect.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The former refers to the ocean’s ability to regulate the planet’s temperature, while the latter refers to the influence of this moderation on coastal climates. In other words, the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean plays a key role in keeping winter temperatures in Georgia’s coastal towns and cities from dropping as low as they do in the interior or inland portions of the state. Basically, that massive body of water acts like a giant heat battery, which slowly releases its stored warmth throughout the winter months.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As a result, winter here is cool, with temperatures <a href="http://coastgis.marsci.uga.edu/summit/climatecoast.htm">averaging in the 50s</a>, according to the School of Marine Programs Coastal GIS Lab at the University of Georgia. The State Climatologist <a href="http://coastgis.marsci.uga.edu/summit/_notes/coastal.pdf">adds</a> that it is very rare for daily high temperatures to drop below zero (32 degrees Fahrenheit) in the state.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Savannah</h2>



<p>Winter temperatures in the Hostess City of the South hovers around 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (around 4 to 10 degrees Celsius). For visitors, this means that Savannah is a delightfully warm winter destination.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Brunswick</h2>



<p>Another cozy coastal city during wintertime in Georgia is Brunswick. This picturesque place reaches <a href="https://www.worldatlas.com/cities/9-warmest-georgia-towns-for-a-winter-visit.html">average highs</a> of 61 degrees Fahrenheit (roughly 17 degrees Celsius) in January.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sapelo Island</h2>



<p>This barrier island on the Georgia Coast, which is accessible through a ferry ride, sees <a href="https://www.thetravel.com/sapelo-island-is-the-australia-of-georgia-with-americas-most-underrated-beaches/">winter temperatures</a> between 42 degrees Fahrenheit (around 5.56 degrees Celsius) and 63 degrees Fahrenheit (about 17 degrees Celsius). It doesn’t snow on the island, so while you might be bundled up, you will still enjoy a fairly comfortable outing.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">St. Simons Island</h2>



<p>In this island off the coast of Georgia, winter feels more like an extended autumn. The island’s average temperatures in January, for instance, is a comfortable low of 51 degrees Fahrenheit (10.56 degrees Celsius) and a high that can reach up to 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.56 degrees Celsius).&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">St. Marys</h2>



<p>St. Marys is a captivating coastal community situated in the southern border of Camden County. Winters in this quaint town average 53 degrees Fahrenheit (about 12 degrees Celsius) in January.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Darien</h2>



<p>The city of Darien is part of the McIntosh County and the Brunswick, Georgia metropolitan statistical area. It is situated on the coast at the mouth of the Altamaha River, which is around 50 miles (around 80.5 km) south of Savannah. In wintertime, this quaint town records an average of about 52 degrees Fahrenheit (about 11 degrees Celsius) in January.&nbsp;</p>

Waycross, where “the ways cross,” is a nationally recognized Main Street City and economic hub of the Okefenokee Area. Situated at the northern tip of the wildlife refuge, the county seat and the only incorporated city in Ware County enjoys an average winter temperature of 51 degrees Fahrenheit (10.56 degrees Celsius) in mid-January.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Flooding is a common natural disaster in the United States. In fact, the National Weather Service (NWS) <a href="https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood-hazards">states</a> that around 75% of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding. The agency further notes that the most common cause for this is rain and/or snowmelt. Flooding due to snowmelt typically affects the country’s northern states and mountainous areas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In Alaska, snowmelt is among the most frequent flood types, according to the state’s <a href="https://dggs.alaska.gov/popular-geology/flooding-landslides.html">Department of Natural Resources</a>, and it affects communities like those in the <a href="https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/Portals/4/pub/02122CV001B.pdf">Kenai Peninsula</a>. Snowmelt flooding is an annual threat in the state, which means that for Alaskan communities, it’s less a question of &#8220;if&#8221; and more about &#8220;how severe.&#8221;</p>



<p>However, snowmelt flooding in Alaska operates differently than the dramatic river flooding most people imagine.&nbsp;Here’s how it works.&nbsp;</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Science Behind Alaska&#8217;s Snowmelt Flooding</h1>



<p>Snow is the result of high temperatures freezing water vapor in the air, which then falls to the ground as ice crystals. In areas like Alaska or on top of mountains, this layer of snow does not melt for months and becomes the first of multiple layers of snow from different snowfall to form a snowpack, where each new layer of snow compacts or compresses the layer/s underneath it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The snowpack will only start to melt when temperatures reach above-freezing figures, such as in spring. Then, the snowpack will start to melt, and the water from this melting snowpack is the snowmelt.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Because of this, snowmelt is an important water source for streams and reservoirs. For instance, California relies on snowmelt for one-third of the water supply used in its cities and farms. And, as much as 75% of some western states’ water supplies come from snowmelt, according to the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/water-science-school/science/snowmelt-runoff-and-water-cycle">U.S. Geological Survey</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The amount of water released by snowmelt varies, depending on the density of the snow,” the National Geographic <a href="https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/snowpack/">explains</a>. “Wet, heavy snow can release about 3.8 centimeters (1.5 inches) of water per 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow. Lighter, drier snow might contain just 2.5 centimeters (1.0 inch) of water per 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow.”</p>



<p>In Alaska, however, snowmelt is <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/programs/climate-adaptation-science-centers/small-changes-temperature-have-big-impact-alaskas">more than just a supply of water</a>. It also determines the viability of the Last Frontier’s hydropower and the reliability of transportation to its remote regions. Snowmelt also affects salmon streams, which are hunted for subsistence, commerce, and sport.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Snowmelt Flooding Works in Alaska</h2>



<p>A big chunk of Alaska’s land (<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-025-05170">83%</a>) is classified as interior boreal forest and arctic tundra snow climates, so it’s not surprising to know that the state accumulates an impressive amount of snowpack throughout its extended winter season.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When spring temperatures rise (and let&#8217;s be honest, &#8220;spring&#8221; in Alaska can stretch well into May), this frozen water begins converting to liquid runoff. This melting of snowpack accumulated during the winter typically runs off into nearby creeks, streams, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, which causes them to rise rapidly and overflow their banks. This type of flood is known as snowmelt flooding.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The NWS <a href="https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood-hazards">explains</a>: “Once it begins to melt and does reach the soil, water from snowmelt behaves much as it would if it had come from rain instead of snow by either infiltrating into the soil, running off, or both. Flooding can occur when there is more water than the soil can absorb or can be contained in storage capacities in the soil, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.”</p>



<p>One thing to note is that snowmelt is most often a relatively slow phenomenon, comparable to light or moderate rainfall. However, several factors and conditions can further increase or exacerbate the severity of meltwater floods in the state, including the following:</p>



<ul>
<li>High soil moisture conditions prior to snowmelt,&nbsp;</li>



<li>Rainfall during the late fall,&nbsp;</li>



<li>Ground frost or frozen soil, especially deep, hard ground frost,&nbsp;</li>



<li>Deep or heavy snow cover,&nbsp;</li>



<li>Widespread snow cover,&nbsp;</li>



<li>Rain falling while snow is still on the ground,</li>



<li>Unusually warm periods with high dew point temperatures, and&nbsp;</li>



<li>Nighttime temperatures that remain above freezing.</li>
</ul>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">When Snowmelt Flooding Strikes: Preparing for the Inevitable</h1>



<p>Snowmelt flooding in Alaska isn&#8217;t just possible; it&#8217;s inevitable. The state&#8217;s climate, geography, and seasonal patterns create conditions that generate flooding annually in various locations. In other words, spring melt is Alaska&#8217;s most predictable natural hazard.</p>



<p>Because of this, you should treat spring flooding as an annual planning requirement, rather than an emergency. This will help you minimize risks, protect yourself and your loved ones, and have a much more effective recovery.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Here are some of the <a href="https://anthc.org/spring-breakup-is-here-alaska-be-prepared-if-flooding-impacts-your-community/">proactive measures</a> you can take to prepare ahead of time:&nbsp;</p>



<ul>
<li>Review and familiarize yourself with your community’s Small Community Emergency Response Plan, if it has one.&nbsp;</li>



<li>One month before an expected spring break up, start making or reviewing your plans, inventory your at-risk belongings, and ensure you have emergency kits and gear readily on hand.</li>



<li>Two weeks before an expected spring break up, start stocking up on food, water, medications, and other personal emergency items and essential supplies.</li>



<li>When a flood warning has been issued, it’s time to move your at-risk belongings and items, such as canned and dry goods and potable water, to a higher level to prevent damage. And, if you haven’t already, this is also the time to familiarize yourself with your community’s emergency plan.&nbsp;</li>



<li>When an evacuation has been issued, follow the instructions from authorities and keep updated of the situation through the various resources available to you, such as your local radio stations or online official channels.</li>
</ul>



<p>Remember that snowmelt is a gradual process, and it may occur during relatively mild weather. So, residents, businesses, and communities should maintain flood preparedness as an ongoing responsibility rather than a seasonal concern because in Alaska, next spring&#8217;s snowmelt season is always just around the corner.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.aipnw.com/contact/areas-served/alaska-public-adjuster/">Alaska is facing a crisis</a> that most Americans never saw coming. Each year, entire communities watch their homeland gradually disappear into the sea due to erosion. Some areas are losing <a href="https://grist.org/solutions/possible-solutions-alaskas-eroding-coastlines/">at least 3 feet</a> to <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/news/updated-assessment-erosion-rates-alaskas-arctic-coast">as much as 61 feet</a> of coastline in a single year because of it. This isn&#8217;t some distant environmental abstract. We&#8217;re talking about homes, schools, and entire villages that must relocate or face complete destruction.</p>



<p>Erosion in Alaska is significant because of the fact that the state contains a huge portion <a href="https://dggs.alaska.gov/webpubs/dggs/ic/text/ic068.pdf">(35%) of the country’s coastline</a> and a majority <a href="https://grist.org/solutions/possible-solutions-alaskas-eroding-coastlines/">(83%) of its population is living on the coast</a>. One <a href="https://www.whoi.edu/press-room/news-release/coastal-retreat-in-alaska-is-accelerating-because-of-compound-climate-impacts/">study</a> focused on Alaska’s 60,000+ square kilometer Arctic Coastal Plain and how compound climate impacts accelerate coastal change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The findings from this study reveal an unprecedented transformation of Alaska’s Arctic coastlines,” Benjamin Jones, research associate professor at the Institute of Northern Engineering, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, told the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “By 2100, the combined effects of coastal erosion, sea level rise, and permafrost thaw subsidence will likely push the North Slope shoreline inland to a location it hasn’t reached since the last interglacial period over 100,000 years ago. ”</p>



<p>The scale of Alaska&#8217;s erosion problem demands understanding of its unique geographical position. Unlike erosion in temperate climates, Alaska&#8217;s situation involves a unique mix of particularly aggressive factors. In addition, the impacts of erosion go far beyond simple land loss. This phenomenon creates cascading economic and social disruptions that ripple through entire regions.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Science Behind Alaska&#8217;s Disappearing Land</h1>



<p>Alaska&#8217;s erosion operates through multiple mechanisms working together. That is, the state&#8217;s 6,640 miles of coastline face constant assault from several directions simultaneously.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wave Action</h2>



<p>The most obvious culprit of erosion in Alaska is wave action. Alaska&#8217;s waves carry unusual destructive power. The state’s wave systems hit its shores with tremendous energy, especially during storm seasons.</p>



<p>In particular, the open Arctic Ocean where there is no ice can result in larger surface waves. Such large waves can have many adverse consequences, including <a href="https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/63239">excessive erosion</a> due to currents and water circulation along the shallow areas.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Climate Change</h2>



<p>Global warming brought about by climate change is causing an increase in temperature in the Last Frontier. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2016-09/documents/climate-change-ak.pdf">reported</a> that most of the state has warmed three degrees (F), on average, and six degrees during winter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A recent <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2025/05/03/climate-change-warms-temperatures-in-alaska/83399137007/">USA Today</a> report stated that Alaska’s rising temperatures is twice or thrice than the global average. As a result, the National Weather Service has launched its first heat advisories in Fairbanks and Juneau. More importantly, this warming has also resulted in thawing of permafrost (more on this below) and sea ice loss.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sea ice serves as a natural barrier that protects Alaska’s northern coastlines from waves, winds, and currents. According to the <a href="https://toolkit.climate.gov/arctic-oceans-sea-ice-and-coasts">U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit</a>, “Current observations and future projections show that as sea ice melts earlier and forms later in the year, Arctic coasts will be more vulnerable to storm surge and wave energy.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Permafrost Erosion</h2>



<p>Permafrost is another factor that plays a critical role in Alaska’s disappearing land. The Alaska Division of Geological &amp; Geophysical Surveys (AK DGGS) <a href="https://dggs.alaska.gov/hazards/permafrost.html">defines</a> permafrost as “ground with a temperature that remains at or below freezing (32° F or 0° C) for two or more consecutive years.” In cold climate regions like Alaska, permafrost ensures structures and infrastructures have a stable foundation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In other words, permafrost acts like natural cement holding soil together. However, when frozen ground thaws, it becomes incredibly vulnerable to erosion. When it melts, the binding effect disappears, and waves, rain, or spring melt can carve away massive chunks of land.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Along ice-rich permafrost coastlines, the land surface is falling faster than the sea levels are rising,” Pier Paul Overduin, senior scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Potsdam, Germany, <a href="https://www.whoi.edu/press-room/news-release/coastal-retreat-in-alaska-is-accelerating-because-of-compound-climate-impacts/">shared</a>. “Over the coming decades, permafrost thaw subsidence will move the coastline farther inland than coastal erosion or sea level rise alone will move it, and this subsidence will dominate Arctic coastal change over the long term.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>While permafrost thaw subsidence is a major driver of coastal land loss in Arctic regions, permafrost land collapse known as <a href="https://www.belfercenter.org/research-analysis/permafrost-thaw-alaska-overlooked-climate-health-crisis">usteq</a>, a Yupi’k work which means “surface caves in,” is even worse. For instance, <a href="https://permafrost.woodwellclimate.org/thawing-ground-frozen-systems-erosion-case-study-reveals-u-s-climate-policy-gaps-in-chevak-alaska/">Cev’aq</a>, a Cup’ik village located on the Ninglikfak River of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, has lost more than 7 feet of ground in some places due to an usteq in the summer of 2024. This land loss has put at risk a culturally important structure called maqivik, or steam house.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>Note that permafrost is under <a href="https://www.belfercenter.org/research-analysis/permafrost-thaw-alaska-overlooked-climate-health-crisis">about 85% of Alaska</a>. Nearly 170,000 people, including 229 federally recognized Tribes, reside across 192 communities on its surface, according to The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Permafrost is thickest and most extensive north of the Brooks Range in the Arctic north and extends as much as 2,000 feet below the surface in the Arctic Coastal Plain. Permafrost becomes thinner and discontinuous toward the south, with Southeast Alaska having none except for patches in high elevation.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">How Erosion Impacts Communities in Alaska</h1>



<p>Real people live with erosion&#8217;s consequences daily, and their experiences reveal the true scope of this challenge. Village leaders throughout coastal Alaska report similar patterns: gradual land loss that suddenly accelerates, forcing impossible decisions about relocation.</p>



<p>Consider the logistics alone. When a community decides to relocate due to erosion, they must move everything—homes, schools, infrastructure, and often graves of ancestors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In addition, the psychological impact often gets overlooked in technical discussions, but this is also important. Forced relocation due to erosion creates trauma that affects entire communities for generations. These aren&#8217;t just houses being lost; they&#8217;re ancestral lands with deep cultural significance for indigenous people.</p>



<p>“There’s just multiple issues everywhere,” Dillingham city planner Patty Buholm told <a href="https://grist.org/solutions/possible-solutions-alaskas-eroding-coastlines/">Grist</a>. As of March 2023, the Alaskan city was facing an erosion rate of around 16 feet per year in front of its sewage lagoon. A mass grave, which held victims of tuberculosis and the 1918 flu pandemic, was also slowly falling out of a bluff and onto the beach below it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Indigenous communities face particular challenges because their traditional knowledge systems are tied to specific landscapes. When those landscapes disappear, the knowledge systems built around them become difficult to maintain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There’s a lot of history that’s being washed away,” Eben Hopson, an Iñupiaq filmmaker and photographer, told Grist. Hopson lives in the village of Utqiaġvik, where waves are swallowing up evidence of life in long-uninhabited coastal settlements.</p>

<p>Pennsylvania is impacted by a number of extreme weather events. These include snow and ice storms, nor’easters, heat and cold waves, tropical cyclones, floods, and severe thunderstorms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A thunderstorm is basically a rain shower that also produces lightning and thunder. It is classified as a “severe thunderstorm” when it comes with at least one of the following: strong winds exceeding 57.5 miles per hour (50 knots), hail one inch or greater, or a tornado. Roughly 10,000 severe thunderstorms out of the around 100,000 thunderstorms each year hit the U.S., according to the <a href="https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/">NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL)</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.ggg-ai.com/claim-types/commercial/tornadowindstorm/">In Pennsylvania, thunderstorms are common during the spring and summer months.</a> They can come with lightning, hail, strong winds, flash floods, and even tornadoes. Outside of this, are thunderstorms in the Quaker State becoming more frequent and severe?</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Answer: Possibly</h1>



<p>While we’d love to say “yes” or “no,” the answer to this question is not that simple. There seems to be no definitive data to confirm that thunderstorms are becoming more frequent or severe in Pennsylvania. However, studies have shown that heavy rainfall is becoming more prevalent in the state due to climate change. This intense precipitation can come with thunderstorms, and so, it is likely that thunderstorms could become more frequent and/or severe too.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Tornadoes in the area have also increased in the last two decades, but more on this below.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Look at Past Pennsylvania Thunderstorms&nbsp;&amp; Tornadoes</h2>



<p>If we take a look at the thunderstorm events in the last 20 years or so, we’ll find most of them in the earlier half of the last two decades, while the latter half has more tornadoes. Since all tornadoes originate from thunderstorms, we can say that thunderstorms have increased and intensified.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Why Global Warming Matters</h1>



<p>The increasing heat in the Earth’s atmosphere could play a significant role in the formation of more frequent and severe thunderstorms in Pennsylvania and elsewhere in the future. Why? You’ll have to understand how thunderstorms are formed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Formation of a Thunderstorm</h2>



<p>A thunderstorm is made up of different ingredients: moisture, lifting mechanism, and unstable air. But, since climate change can intensify thunderstorm events, let’s focus on how severe thunderstorms are created instead.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Severe thunderstorms also result from the combination of moisture, unstable air, and a lifting mechanism. However, it adds strong wind shear, or the twisting of the winds, to the mix.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Climate Change Affects Thunderstorm Formation</h2>



<p>Global warming has created a warmer atmosphere. This leads to the availability of more water vapor, which could result to more intense thunderstorms.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the <a href="https://www.riverreporter.com/stories/heatwaves-floods-and-thunderstorms-pa-releases-updated-climate-change-projections,196552">2024 Pennsylvania Climate Impacts Assessment</a>, &#8220;Pennsylvania is expected to get hotter with dangerous heat waves and droughts, while at the same time experiencing more intense storms and damaging flooding.&#8221; The report reviews current scientific findings and climate projections to identify relative risks that were used to inform the state’s Climate Action Plan.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Compared to baseline conditions from 1971 to 2000, the report expects the annual average temperature to increase by 6.7 degrees Fahrenheit by 2050. This takes into account more frequent and intense heat events and droughts as well as extreme rainfall events. For Pennsylvania, in particular, this means an increase in its total average rainfall but in less frequent but heavier rain events.&nbsp;</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">A Continuing Trend</h1>



<p>As of 2019, severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings in the Philadelphia region were off the charts, i.e., surpassing 2018’s total warnings for the area. There were 134 severe thunderstorm warnings and 23 tornado warnings for the year compared to 110 and 10 severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings in 2018, respectively. The thunderstorms in 2019 were even labeled “<a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/severe-thunderstorms-tornado-warnings-in-2019-already-higher-than-all-of-2018/165611/">storms on steroids</a>” by some news outlets.&nbsp;</p>



<p>&#8220;No one predicted this would occur now,&#8221; Glenn &#8220;Hurricane&#8221; Schwartz, NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist, said of climate models from a generation ago. &#8220;Imagine what it’ll be like in 20 years, in 40 years.&#8221;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among the natural disasters that Georgians have to prepare for are wildfires. These are fires that begin in grasslands, forests, and other natural areas. Due to their tendency to spread quickly, wildfires are uncontrollable. </p>



<p>They can be ignited by lightning and other natural phenomena, but they can also be caused by human activities. In fact, the latter causes nearly 85% of wildfires in the country, according to the National Park Service (NPS). The no. 1 cause of <a href="https://www.ggg-ai.com/claim-types/homeowners/fire/">wildfires in Georgia</a> is debris burning, which accounts for more than 50% of all the wildfires in the Empire State of the South, according to the <a href="https://gatrees.org/fire-prevention-suppression/wildfire-prevention/">Georgia Forestry Commission</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Debris burning is especially risky in communities located within natural areas. In fact, these neighborhoods have the highest wildfire risk in the state. Next to them comes those situated in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas, or those zones where human development meet or intermingle with unoccupied or undeveloped land that’s filled with vegetation that can fuel wildfires.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Georgia faces a higher risk of wildfires during dry and windy months. This fire season typically occurs from February to May. As such, many wildfires in the state happen within these months. The West Mims Fire, which affected Charlton, Clinch, and Ware counties from May to July 2017, is an example.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>But, in the state’s wildfire <a href="https://goblogging.net/2022/03/15/history-of-home-automation/" data-type="post" data-id="173">history</a>, one stands out as the largest wildfire in Georgia. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>The Sweat Farm Fire</em></strong></h2>



<p>Many sources deem the wildfire that occurred on April 16, 2007 as the largest wildfire in the history of the Peach State. The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) has been <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna19435750">reported</a> as stating that this was “the Southeast’s biggest wildfire since 1898.” Meanwhile, Firehouse Magazine describes it as “the largest wildfire in more than a century.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>In any case, it is definitely one of the worst fires in the country’s history.</p>



<p>How the Wildfire Started</p>



<p>Ernest Sweat, a tobacco farm owner, was driving home when he spotted smoke. It wasn’t dust from the dirt road, but signs of a fire nearby.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Upon closer inspection, he found that a fallen pine had snapped power lines. It acted like a match that set ablaze the surrounding trees. Although the Sweat Farm owner rushed home to notify the fire department, the flames had already begun to spread.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Within a day, the wildfire burned through 9 miles of rural timberland. Within a week, the wildfire had found its way to Okefenokee Swamp, thanks to extremely dry conditions. Multiple homes were destroyed in its wake.</p>



<p>After a month, the wildfire met and united with a second fire known as the Bugaboo Island Fire when lightning ignited the flames at the center of the swamp. In its path were more than 9 sq. miles (23 sq. km) of coastal pine forest, and along with brush and grasses, it served as tinder to the blaze.</p>



<p>“This fuel [parched stands of trees] is really volatile. It doesn’t take very much for it to light up and run,” Wayne Ichiyasu, a crew supervisor from Boulder, Colorado, told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/09/us/09fires.html">The New York Times</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A wind blew the wildfire northwest toward Florida.&nbsp;Thousands of firefighters from Georgia and other states were not able to quench the flames.</p>



<p>In the end, Sweat’s biggest regret was how he wasn’t able to stop the fire before it became the biggest in Georgia’s history. ‘‘If I could have just been here a little bit earlier, before it got into those roots, I could’ve outed it,’’ he told The Associated Press.</p>



<p>How the Sweat Farm Fire Ended</p>



<p>The firefighters finally saw a reprieve from the seemingly unrelenting flames in the form of Tropical Storm Barry. The storm brought as much as 8 inches of rain on June 2, quickly reducing the blaze into embers, and then scattered showers poured an additional 2 to 4 inches on the fires.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Tropical Storm Barry definitely stopped the blaze in its tracks, so the firefighters focused on dousing hot spots.&nbsp; Others turned their attention to bushes and trees and began ripping them out and pushing them out of the way. Still others were tasked with creating and fortifying fire breaks. Using bulldozers, they ploughed a line of dirt, roughly 20 feet across, to put an end to the spread of the fire.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their efforts worked. At this point, the wildfire was considered to be more than 90% contained, so many firefighters were sent home. In July, the Sweat Farm Fire was deemed fully contained.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Wildfire Damages</em></strong></h3>



<p>The fire ravaged through acres and acres of land, not only in Georgia but in neighboring Florida as well. In the first 48 hours alone, the Sweat Farm Fire burned through 20,000 acres (around 8,000 hectares).&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the aftermath, the Georgia Forestry Commission attributes a total of more than 564,450 acres (nearly 230,000 hectares) across Georgia and Florida to the wildfire. The area the blaze touched was 2.8 times larger than New York City, according to a <a href="https://www.statesboroherald.com/local/wildfire-smoldering-declared-largest-southern-fire-in-decades/">Statesboro Herald</a> report—up to 30 miles (48 km) wide and 58 miles (93 km) long.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Georgia Forestry Commission reports that up to $65 million worth of timber ruined by the fire.&nbsp; Meanwhile, according to the <a href="https://gema.georgia.gov/georgia-disaster-history">Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA)</a>, the wildfire destroyed a total of 18 homes.&nbsp;</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Lessons Learned</em></strong></h4>



<p>Aside from the charred remains of trees and other burnt things, the Sweat Farm Fire left two main lessons for the Georgia Forestry Commission.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The first one was how planning and wildfire protection strategies would play an important role in lessening the impact of future wildfires. As a result, the agency built a permanent fire break around the Okefenokee Swamp known as Swamp Edge Break. The fire break would protect the wetland, which is known globally for its amphibian residents as well as other threatened and endangered species, such as indigo snakes, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and wood storks. At the same time, the fire break also serves as an escape route and safety zone in the event of fires.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Secondly, the agency learned that they could dig small ponds at strategic places near the swamp. These helicopter dip sites, as they were called, were created to provide sufficient water supply for helicopters and engines to refill water from. The agency maintains a total of 74 helicopter dip sites today.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As for Sweat Farm’s owner, he began riding his four-wheel all-terrain vehicle to check for signs of flames after the wildfire. ‘‘I’m fire conscious now,’’ he told the Statesboro Herald. ‘‘I don’t have much, but I’d sure like for it to stay here.’’</p>

<p>In regards to education topics for discussion, one of the most popular is the private school versus public education debate. <a href="https://japhetschool.org/accreditation-and-awards/">Private schools</a> are often seen as providing a more exclusive, high-quality education. In contrast, the education available in public schools can be seen as more open and potentially accessible to all.</p>



<p>Many people consider charter schools to offer an even more unique educational experience, one that combines the best elements of both private and public education systems. But ultimately, education should not be a competition between these different types of institutions but rather a conversation about how we can work together to create the best possible education outcomes for everyone involved.</p>



<p>While my children (one high school senior and an eighth grader) are in the public school system, had I had the opportunity to send them to private school, I would have. Unfortunately, my children have fallen oh so very far behind, especially after the Covid-19 shutdown and the subsequent online learning. Online learning was difficult for a lot of children. I think the only children who were <em>not</em> significantly affected by the shutdown were the homeschooled kids! (Homeschoolers make up 6.73% of all school-age children (K-12) in the U.S.)</p>



<p>According to the <a href="https://www.nais.org/">National Association of Independent Schools </a>(NAIS), <em>analyses of NAIS enrollment data suggest that for many schools, the steep declines were temporary. In the 2021–2022 school year, the median number of independent school students per school was significantly higher than in 2020–2021: 396 versus 378. Sixty percent of schools reported higher enrollment in 2021–2022 than in 2017–2018</em>.</p>

<p>In my home state of Michigan, the average number of private school students is one hundred seventy-eight (2022-23). The largest private school in Michigan is Griggs International Academy, with 2,355 students.</p>



<p>For the 2022-23 school year, there are 874 private schools serving 142,982 students in Michigan (3,553 public schools serve 1,403,040 students).</p>

<p>Facial beauty is heavily reliant on having eye-catching features. In particular, the nose should be straight and balanced, the eyes should stand out, the lips and smile should draw you in, and the cheekbones should round out your face nicely.</p>



<p>Then what&#8217;s behind the old saying &#8220;beauty is in the eye of the beholder&#8221;? Why do we feel a connection to some people and almost a repulsion to others? It doesn&#8217;t matter if society views them as attractive or not.</p>



<p>It turns out that beauty is an evolutionary response. Humans are biologically inclined to seek out facial symmetry, which we associate with healthy development and a good gene pool. Symmetry in a person&#8217;s face can be attributed to genetics and environmental factors such as nutrition, exposure to pollutants, and stress levels. Additionally, a person&#8217;s skin tone, hair color, and eye color are thought to contribute to overall attractiveness.</p>

<p>At the end of the day, beauty can be hard to define and subjective to each individual, just like art and music. However, with a better understanding of why we are biologically inclined towards certain features, it&#8217;s easier to understand what makes a face attractive.&nbsp;</p>



<p>And when we find someone attractive in real life, our brain recognizes their facial symmetry as an indication of good health and desirable genes.</p>

<p>This can take many forms, from meditation to journaling or anything else that brings healing energy and support into your life. Stress management is critical, and taking some extra moments to nurture yourself can make a world of difference in how you show up in any given setting, even if society deems them otherwise. So remember: there&#8217;s no need to fit anyone else&#8217;s mold when yours was made with so much that it fits you just right. Trust me.</p>



<p>According to &#8220;societal norms,&#8221; I am considered &#8220;good-looking.&#8221; Whatever. I had a good-looking husband and good-looking kids and was dying inside. Because that&#8217;s not what my true spirit wanted and needed to survive and grow. I left that husband and still have those good-looking kids, but today, I help them find their inner beauty first, which makes them even more beautiful as a whole people.</p>



<p>A good self-care routine can also help maintain a healthy complexion and a vibrant appearance, which adds to one&#8217;s overall attractiveness. And, when in doubt, remember confidence is key. If you feel good on the inside, you&#8217;ll feel outwardly good. &#8220;Look good, feel good, play good.&#8221; At least, that&#8217;s what an old coach of mine used to say. So be kind to yourself, invest in self-care routines, and embrace the beauty that comes from within. You never know who&#8217;s watching, especially the kids.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s up to us all to take care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. It&#8217;s about loving yourself for whom you are and understanding your own kind of beauty.</p>

<p>There isn&#8217;t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to communicate with middle schoolers will vary depending on the individual child. However, here are a few tips that may help you better connect with your middle schooler:</p>



<ul><li>Show interest in their lives and activities. Ask them about their day, their hobbies, and their friends.</li><li>Be patient and understanding.</li><li>Avoid lecturing. Instead, try to have open and honest conversations with your middle schooler about the topics that are important to them.</li><li>Be a good role model. Your child will likely be watching and learning from your example, so it&#8217;s important to set a good one.</li><li>Keep the lines of communication open. Let your middle schooler know that they can always come to you with any concerns or questions they may have.</li></ul>

<p>Try to be available as much as possible when they come home from school or wish to communicate with you. If you cannot be there physically, be available via text or phone at those times. However, don&#8217;t hover; allow them some peace and quiet first. Their brain has been working all day, so they require some rest just like we do. As a result, they may not want to converse when they walk in the door.</p>



<p>This is also an excellent time to listen for clues about what might be happening with your child—without being overly nosy. You can say, &#8216;It sounds like something might be up. I&#8217;m here if you want to talk about it. But don&#8217;t interrogate them. You want to be available without being intrusive.</p>



<p>And if they do open up, resist the urge to fix things or offer solutions. Experts suggest that the biggest mistake parents make is trying to problem-solve. Instead, middle-schoolers just want someone to listen and say, &#8220;That sounds tough kiddo, &#8220; </p>
