Is Portugal in your travel plans? If so, here you go..this is the place to stay! I wish I knew about Villa Extramuros when I was travelling in Portugal many years ago. That trip still remains very special to me since I took it solo and loved the country for as much as I could see in three weeks.

I know...I know there are a few downsides of traveling solo like not having someone to share a bottle with you by the river Douro in Porto...but there is a hidden pleasure of having places all to yourself and savoring them with their true elements when you travel by yourself...When you are accompanied by no one, you are actually surrounded by the smells, sounds and strangers of the city and that's a wonderful thing! So, go ahead...try it!

I have to admit that it is a lot of work to maintain a clean, organized garden and I am definetely not an expert about it. But I love being in the garden, spending time planting, weeding, taking care of our trees, flowers, and little veggie patch.

We live on the North Shore and although it is only 10 min drive from downtown Vancouver, it is a world away...We have a forest belt behind us, and many different types of birds visiting us all the time. Most of the time it is so silent here that the breeze and the birds are all you can hear. When we moved to North Van 2 years ago from lively and lovely Kitsilano, I thought maybe this much calmness is not my cup of tea...but it is and I love it! I feel so energized and at the same time so calm and peaceful.

Dogruyu soylemek gerekirse temiz ve duzenli bir bahce tutmak hic de kolay degil. Bizim de bahcemizi cogu zaman "naturel" halinde biraktigimizi soylemek yanlis olmaz. Ama genel olarak bahceyle ugrasmak, sebze tohumlari ekmek, cicek fideleri dikmek, son derece agirkanli bir tavirla yavaas yavaaas otlari temizlemek, agaclarin kuruyan yapraklarini derleyip toplamak harika bir ugras, ve ayni zamanda kostur kostur devam eden hayata verilen cok gerekli bir es.

Plajlari, cafe kulturu, parklari, ve her kose basina serpistirilmis (yoga) studyolariyla civil civil Kitsilano'dan koprunun diger yakasina, North Vancouver'a tasinali 2 seneyi gecti. Evin hemen 2 sokak ustunde ormanlik alan ve ulusal park basladigindan cogu zaman etrafa tam bir sessizlik hakim...Cogu zaman kulaga tek calinan esen ruzgarin ve agaclarin arasinda oynasan kuslarin sesi...Onceleri hep sehir merkezinde yasamaya alismis bunyeye nasil olacak bunca sakinlik diye dusunduk ama yine de deneyimlemek istedik...Arabayla 10 dk mesafemizdeki merkezde calistiktan veya gezip eglendikten sonra buraya geri dondugumde bambaska bir dunyaya gelmis gibi oluyorum. Bana tam anlamiyla 'artik evimdeyim' hissiyati veriyor ve bu hissi cok seviyorum.

Wow, what a fantastic weekend!
Sunshine, warm breeze, great food, happy toddlers...we had it all, what else can one ask for?

We left the kiddos with their grandma on Saturday and started the weekend at one of our favorite breakfast spots in Kitsilano, then continued with a delicious macchiato and salted caramel donuts at 49th parallel. When it was humanly not possible to eat any more, we headed to the beach and just laid down under the sun...For late lunch we went to Rangoli and once again had the best veggie curry in the world (nope - i am not overstating...my life can easily be separated as before and after having their Creamy Portobello Mushroom and Red Pepper Curry). Then we went back to the beach to meet with friends.

Sunday was family day so we headed to the Whytecliff Park in the morning. I discovered this park, through Janis's blog. It has an amazing little beach and it is only 15 min drive from home. In the afternoon we stayed at home and hung out in the garden. Deniz is so much into his bike nowadays and so eager to ride without the training wheels..And of course, Derin wants to do whatever his big brother does which does become a challenge when you are only 2 years old.

Harika bir haftasonu gecirdik!

Piril piril gunesli ve ilik esintili bir hava, nefis yemekler, civil civil kosturan mutlu cocuklar...insan daha ne ister ki?

Cumartesi gunu cocuklari Turkiye'den bizi ziyarete gelen babaanelerine birakip, haftasonuna Kitsilano'daki favori yerlerimizden birinde kahvaltiyla basladik, sonra Kits civarinda kisa bir yuruyus ve 49th Parallel'de kahve & tuzlu karamelli donut molasi...Artik insani olarak daha fazla yemek yememiz mumkun olmadigindan (!) kendimizi plaja attik...Cocuklarla ilgilenmemizi gerektirmeyen bu kutsal saatlerin tadini uzun uzun guneslenip, biraz da kitap okuyarak cikardik. Ogleden sonraya kalan yemegimiz icin Rangoli'ye gittik ve dunyanin en lezzetli veggie curry'lerinden birini yedik (kesinlikle abartmiyorum - hayatimi buranin kremali portobello mantari ve kirmizi biberli curry'sini yemeden once ve yedikten sonra diye ikiye ayirabilirsiniz) Daha sonra yeniden plaja donduk ve arkadaslarimizla bulustuk.

Pazar gunu aile gunuydu...Cocuklari arabaya atip sabahtan Whytecliff Park'a gittik. Bu parki Janis'in blogunda ilk okumustum. Eve arabayla sadece 15 dakika ama sehrin gunes yuzunu gosterdiginde kalabaliklasan plajlarindan o kadar farkli bir havasi var ki..Sakin, sessiz, yemyesil...ustelik bir kucuk koyda etrafi da minik tas adaciklarla cevrili oldugundan denizi de o kadar soguk degil...Cocuklar cok eglendiler ve tabi ki hic eve donmek istemediler. Ogleden sonrayi evde, bahcede gecirdik...Deniz icin bu aralar varsa yoksa bisikleti...her dakika binmek istiyor ustelik de iki tekerlekli surmek icin direniyor...Oysa daha 3 yasina yeni girdi, biraz erken degil mi? Tabi ki dusup duruyor! Isin fenasi Derin de abisi ne yaparsa aynisini yapmak istediginden durmadan bir koruma cemberi vaziyetinde peslerindeyiz.

Come summer come vacation time, which also means to dive into blogs, papers and magazines to find out what is trending in the world of travel. (btw - don't you just love airbnb?) I stumbled upon this designer Mexican retreat via Bright Bazaar. Set on a hill in the charming town of Sayulita and overlooking the Pacific coastline, this newly renovated villa has its own lush garden, swimming pool, and my favourite - a tree-top hot tub with ocean views. Its bright rooms are decorated with local finds and all dressed up in tropical colours. The villa accommodates up to 10 people and available to rent all year around. In my daydreams I've already rented it, picked the room with yellow bedding, unpacked and joined my friends who are enjoying their freshly made mojitos on the terrace overlooking the ocean.

Yaz demek tatil demek, tatil demek seyahat dunyasinda neler olup bitiyor iyice bir bakinip kurcalamak demek. Bu yaz tatilini sehirde gecirmeyi planlamakla birlikte insanin akli bazen uzaklara kacabiliyor...Mesela Bright Bazaar'da rastladigim bu Meksika'daki kiralik eve. Pasifik kiyisindaki Sayulita kasabasinda yer alan bu yeni restore edilmis villayi ben hayalimde coktan kiraladim, sari takimli, pembe cicekli odaya yerlestim ve hatta arkadaslarla su an denize hakim terasta en hizli mojito devirme yarisindayiz. (ben kaybediyorum, zira birinci bardaktan sonra hareketlerim yavasladi) Eger ilginizi cektiyse gitmeniz gereken adres budur.

Havalar aniden isinip pazartesi de tatil olarak eklenince uzun zamandir cocuklarla gecirdigimiz en eglenceli haftasonunu yasadik. Bir parca su birikintisi nelere kadir...ya da bir fiskiye...

Ya da ev yapimi bir cilekli dondurma!

Deniz ve Derin 2 ay once dondukleri Istanbul tatillerinde - kendilerini simartmayi hic (!) sevmeyen bir grup anneanne, babaanne, teyze, eniste ve turevleri tarafindan - tutulduklari tatli ve dondurma ikramlari sonrasi durmadan domduma diye sayikliyorlar. En cok cilekli ve samfistikli dondurmayi sevdiklerinden ikisini karistirip evde yapmayi denedim. Sonuc harika! Dondurma yapiminin bu kadar basit oldugunu bilmiyordum. Bu yaz pek cok cesit denemeyi dusunuyorum!

Firinlanmis Cilek ve Samfistikli Dondurma

1 kilo taze cilek
1 su bardagi seker (250 ml)
1 adet cubuk vanilya
1,5 su bardagi sut (ben buttermilk kullandim!)
1/3 su bardagi eksi krema
bir pincik tuz
dilediginiz kadar toz/file samfistik

Firini 210 dereceye ayarlayin. Cilekleri buyuklerse dorde, kucuklerse ikiye bolun ve firin tepsisine yayin. Usterine sekeri serpin. Vanilya çubuğunu ortadan ikiye kesip bıçak yardımıyla tohumlarını sıyırın ve çubukla beraber tepsiye koyun. Aromalari birbirine gececek sekilde karistirin. 20 dakika boyunca her 5 dakikada bir karistirmak suretiyle cilekler suyunu birakana, seker iyice eriyene kadar firinda pisirin. Cileklerin suyu fikirdamaya basladiginda hazir demektir. Tepsiyi firindan alin, vanilya cubugunu icinden cikartip ve sogumaya birakin.

Soguduktan sonra mutfak robotunda cilekleri, sutu, eksi kremayi ve tuzu karistirin. Dondurma makinenize talimatlarına uygun bir şekilde aktarip, makinayi calistirin. Benim kullandigim makinayla 1 litrelik dondurma yaklasik 20-30 dakikada hazir oldu. Son 10 dakikasinda makinada karisan dondurmaya samfistigini ekleyin. Dondurma hazir oldugunda tekrar hava geçirmeyen soguk bir kapta buzluga kaldirin. 2-3 saat icerisinde yenme kivamina gelecektir. Servis yapmadan 15 dakika önce buzluktan çıkartıp oda sicakliginda biraz açılmasını beklemeyi unutmayin.

Iste bu kadar! Dondurmaciya gitmekten daha kolay, ve cok lezzetli!

On-line takip ettigim dergiler arasinda en favorim bu olsa gerek! 3 ayda bir yayinlanan Sweet Paul dergisinde sezonun mevsimsel urunleriyle hazirlanmis dolayisiyla da cogu zaman malzemesini cok rahat bulabileceginiz tarifler gozalici bir sunumla yer aliyor.

Paul Lowe her zaman taninan, talep goren ve sektorde isleriyle konusulan bir fotograf stilisti idi..ama asil patlamasini 2007'de yazmaya basladigi bloguyla yapti. Bu blog zaman icerisinde onun butun kreatif islerini sergiledigi bir alana donustu ve sonunda sadece kendisinin degil aralarinda seflerin, fotografcilarin, ve sanatcilarin da oldugu arkadaslarinin katkisiyla zenginlesen bir portal haline donustu.

2010 yilinin ilkbaharinda yayinlanan ilk online dergi cok begenilince devami da geldi ve 2013 yaz sayisiyla birlikte 13. dergiye ulasti.

Neredeyse Temmuz ayina vardik ama Vancouver'in yagmuru doymak bilmedi. Disarida kapali, gipgri ve sonbahar sonunu andiran bir hava var.

Bu sabah okudugum bir dergide Filipinler'deki bu eco-resort'a rastladim. Dedon Adasi'nda, sorf cenneti olarak bilinen Pasifik okyanusundaki Cloud 9 bolgesinin yanibasinda sessiz, sakin bir koya siginmis 9 bungalow...barefoot luxury tanimina birebir uyumlu bir sekilde tasarlanmis. Masmavi okyanus sularinin vurdugu, palmiye agaclarinin golgelendirdigi beyaz kumsal ilgiliniz cekmezse eger kendinizi resort'un bahcesine, plajina ve havuz kenarina serpistirilmis lounge alanlarindan birine veya benim favorim olan deniz ortasindaki salincaga atabilirsiniz.

{It's pouring rain outside and feels so cold..since this being the case for most of our June in Vancouver city, one can not help but dream places like this one...

If the crystal clear waters of the Pacific Ocean and soft white sanded beaches lined with picture perfect palm trees are not your thing, then there are all these little lounge areas, swings and porches scattered around to enjoy barefoot luxury at its finest!}

En son yazimdan bu yana epey bir zaman gecti ama bu ara icin iyi bir mazeretim var. Ailecek yaptigimiz bir Istanbul seyahati ve arada cocuklari birakip gittigimiz kuzey Ispanya gezisi. Ikisi de tek kelimeyle harikaydi, biriken bir dolu fotografi elemeye ve duzenlemeye feci usensem de yakinda yapip sitede yayinlamayi dusunuyorum. Bir blog tutmanin en guzel taraflarindan birisi aklindakileri dokup, bir sonraki gezi icin hic kaybolmayacak bir referans noktasi olusturabiliyor olman. Yukaridaki resim Ispanya - Fransa sinirina yakin bir balikci kasabasi olan Cadaques'ten. Hala sahildeki kucuk lokantada yedigimiz gunluk baligin tadi damagimda, bir de eslik eden nefis Tempranillo Rioja sarabinin.

{It almost feels like I was gone forever...but I have an awesome excuse! We first flew Istanbul to visit friends & family and then, me & hubby wandered around in Spain for a week sans kiddos. So after a month and a few days I am finally back home. Both trips require a post or two on their own which will follow shortly but for today I want to leave you with this gorgeous scene from Cadaques, a quiet little Spanish town close to the French border. Still swooning over the most tender and delicious pescado we had there, accompanied by a smooth Tempranillo Rioja.}

I don't know about you but in Vancouver we - the mighty Vancouverites! - are known to be in peace with rain. Well, we have to anyway since the rainy season here starts in September and goes well into June. Yep, that makes around 10 months! Doesn't matter, happy we are! Happy as can be! Not dreaming to be in Roatan, Tulum, Kuai or anything!

Still, this morning I found myself staring to this Krabi photo from our month-long-and-dream-like travel to Southeast Asia, almost 4 years ago. Now, let me tell you something...remembering the warm, lazy and long beach days filled with sun and out of this world food memories, one can easily find oneself in a day-dreaming state! And one did! Please don't wake me up too soon!

{Vancouver'in temiz guzel havasini, yesilini, cicegini, bocegini borclu oldugumuz bu yagmurlar her sene Eylul gibi baslar ve Haziran sonuna dogru yavaslar...Bu da bize senede 10 aya yayilan bir yagmur mevsimi verir ki benim buna alismam ilk iki-uc senemi rahatlikla almistir...Simdiyse bir Vancouverite kivamina gelmek uzere oldugumu gururla acikliyorum. Sirilsiklam olma ihtimalini umursamayip 2 yerden bitme bidikla ciktigimiz yuruyusler bunun en guzel ispati olsa gerek ki..zaten cocuk dedigin boyle seyleri hiiic umursamiyor..Aksine bata cika yuruyorlar, duse kalka, ziplaya atlaya pek bi mutlu oluyorlar.

Yine de bu sabah uzun zamandir erteledigim fotograf ayiklama isine oturdugumda ekranda beliren bu resme bakakaldim. Yaklasik dort sene once, bir ayligina ciktigimiz Guneydogu Asya gezisinde cekilen bir Krabi plaji resmi. Sadece yerden goge binbir renkle ve guzellikle kapli olusundan degil, ama uzun zamandir hissetmedigim turde bir tembellik, rahatlik ve dusunce boslugu hallerini de hatirlattigindan. Insana boyle zamanlar gerek...nerede olursa olsun. Kendi kendimizi esiri yaptigimiz teknolojiden, gurultuden, bidir bidir kafanin icinde soylenerek dolasan sorumluluk duygusundan, gunluk (ve aylik..ve omurluk) endiselerden uzakta olmak. Su resimlere biraz daha bakarsam bu hisleri kisa bir zaman da olsa yakalayabilir miyim acaba?}

Bugun Vancouver'a yari karanlik yagmurlu bir hava ve gri bir gokyuzu hakim. Kendimi feci tembel ve uykulu hissediyorum! Tek istedigim yukaridakilere benzer bir kosede kitabim ve battaniyemle kivrilmak ve sonunda da kendiliginden uyuyakalmak...Her sene sonunda, genelde Aralik ayinin ortalarinda bir yerde, sene boyunca oraya buraya not aldigim (ayni senede 4 ayri ajanda tutan baska birini taniyor musunuz?) kitap tavsiyelerine goz atmak icin zaman ayiriyorum. Tavsiyeler cogu zaman arkadaslardan, gazete/blog yazilarindan ve son zamanlarda da su iki harika on-line kaynaktan geliyor: Good Reads ve Small Demons. Bu liste 2013 icin sectiklerim!

{Many moons ago, I spent part of my summer touring central Italy. That was the time when I felt in love with Orvieto and dreamt of going back ever since. Last year we made a quick visit to Rome but ended up not leaving the city at all. Hopefully next time we will have the charming towns of Orvieto, Civita, Viterbo and Bagnoregio in our plans.}.

Kendine ait gul agaclariyla cevrili kucuk bir terasi olan ve direk bahceye acilan La Scrittrice benim favorim. Otelin bahcesi yuzyillik zeytin ve meyve agaclariyla cevrili. Misafirler istedikleri zaman kendi elleriyle topladiklari incirlerin tadina bakabilirler. Cevredeki kucuk kasabalar gunluk yurusler icin cok musait. Otelin icine ve bahcesine serpistirilmis rahat sofalar ise geri donusunuzde elinizde sarabiniz kitabiniza gomulmeniz icin sizi bekliyor. Ah, la dolce vita!

{Corte della Maesta is a newly renovated residence right in the beautiful hilltop village of Civita di Bagnoregio. The owner, Paolo Crepet is a well known TV personality in Italy. Formerly a Bishop's house, the residence has five rooms, all decorated with antique pieces and vintage art. I especially liked the room La Scrittrice (the writer), which has its own entrance from the garden and a small but very pretty terrace with roses. The garden has centuries old olive groves, vegetable patches and fruit trees where guests can help themselves to figs and apples. After a long day hiking the surrounding villages you can snuggle into one of these couches with your on-the-go book and sip the wine you picked earlier from one of the town's many Etruscan wine cellars...Ah, la dolce vita!}
