It’s a beautiful fall afternoon and you managed to sneak away from the office for a quick round of golf. The course isn’t real busy this time of year so you’re able to get right out and play pretty quickly.
Flash forward to the end of the round as you put the pin into the hole on number 18. You walk off the course eager to sit down to add up your score. You’re excited because you’re sure that you played great. In fact, you can’t remember the last time that you hit the golf ball so well.
As you tally your score the euphoria is quickly replaced as reality comes crashing down like a ton of bricks. The score is worse than you thought it would be. In fact, it’s much worse.
We’ve all been there. Where did you go wrong? Where did you lose all those shots?
The answer starts and ends with putting.
Putting has more impact on what you shoot than any other aspect of the the golf game. So much so that I can say with 100% certainty that the quickest way to lower your golf score is to putt better.
How do you putt better?
Eliminate or minimize the number of times that you three putt over the course of a round.
As a general rule, the golfer who scores in the mid 80s to mid 90s will three putt five times per round. Take away these wasted strokes and you’ve just cut a quick five shots off your score.
There two causes of three putts:
To work on your speed control spend five or ten minutes prior to your next round putting to the fringe of the putting green. Go to random places on the putting green and aim at the fringe in various directions. Your goal is to roll your ball the correct distance so that it gets as close to the fringe as possible. Doing this in various directions will help you face the variety of putts you will face on the course during your round.
To hole more short putts you must have confidence. The quickest way to build confidence is to make your intended target look bigger. To do this place a tee in the ground and hit three to six foot putts towards the that tee. After a few putts, you should be rolling the ball into the tee regularly. Do this for five minutes before you tee off and the hole will appear like a bushel basket on the course. You should be confident knowing that if you can hit a small tee you can certainly hit the hole.
Put a few minutes into the drills above and you’ll find that eliminating three putts is much easier than it sounds when you know what to focus on.

Good News, Bad NewsThe good news is that you only make three mistakes when you play golf. The bad news is that you don’t know don’t know what they are.
To simplify the game, I’ve broken down every error you make on the course into one of three categories:
Let’s define them:
Quite simply a mental error happens when you are not fully committed to executing the shot you are attempting. For most golfers this is the most common error. Nine times out of ten, it is your lack of confidence in the shot you are attempting that leads to the poor swing. Not being fully committed and focussed on the shot at hand is the most frequently made mistake in golf.
Have you ever made the perfect swing striking the golf ball with perfect contact? You are on top of the world as your ball flies straight towards the flag stick. A mere second later instead of feeling joy you are heartbroken as your shot flies the green and plugs in the back bunker. That is a judgement error. When you make the swing that you want, with the club that you want and get a negative result, chalk it up to a judgement error.
A physical error is a bad swing relative to your current skill level. Every golfer makes poor swings from Tom the banker to Tiger Woods. We are not machines and the golf swing is fickle. That said however, the physical error is the least common error made by golfers.
That’s it, all your bad shots will fit into one of those three categories. Take a moment to think back over your last couple of rounds and I’ll bet you have a different perspective on some of the shots you hit.
To find out if you committed a mental, judgement or physical error, ask yourself three simple questions after your next bad shot:
