How to fix the Holga camera strap problem with super glue.

I was pondering on the idea of having a Holga strap without having to use the silly little metal bits on the sides of the camera.

They really don’t hold it together so I usually use tape.

I did however manage to come up with a simple yet quite genius idea of just supergluing them to the front of the Holga.

So i used them in the end but in a better way. This way I can still tape up the light leaks too!

I really don’t recommend this if you don’t want to ruin your paint job. This is definitely a permanent hack.

Again sorry for the crummy pictures but I don’t have any other digital camera at the moment apart from my phone one.

6 Top Tips For Street Photography - a guide to improving your street photography.

Street photography can be a daunting experience if you are not very confident with your camera.

Below are some top tips for getting some good street photography, whilst keeping your dignity as a photographer.

1. Keep Your Camera Handy

The amount of times I’ve fumbled around in my bag only to see a perfect photograph opportunity go to waste is silly. Keep your camera handy at all times, preferably as close to your face as possible, so you are always ready.

2. Look All Around You

Look up down and around you. You are continuously missing good photography opportunities if you don’t. Be alert and prepared at all times!

3. Find Out About Events

Research events and festivals that may be taking place in your local area. I just missed a huge bike race in my city, which was a real shame. You local tourist information centre is a great bet.

4. Find Hotspots

Markets, bus stations and busy high streets all make good places for interesting street photography. Get familiar with your surroundings and find out where the hot spots are.

5. Be Discreet

Not everyone likes being in a photograph, so sometimes you need to be a little discreet. If in doubt you should always ask the person if its ok to take a photograph, Its that or be extra sneaky…Hide around corners and be quick.

6. Shoot ‘From the hip.’

You don’t always get the chance to get the Holga to your eye, so trust your judgement and shoot without using the viewfinder. This is perhaps one of the most valuable things you should learn.

I am pleased to announce that the first roll of film for the Go Holga project has been done!

I completed the roll today as I couldn’t actually find my own Holga! (haha!) The film will be going to the lab tomorrow.

I have also invested in some mint green spray paint which I will be sprucing up the Holga with tonight.

I’m excited!

Top tips for Holga cameras and airport security.

One concern with flying somewhere is that your cameras and films have to pass through both intense security and all kinds of baggage scanners.

Here are some top tips for getting your Holga cameras and films through there

1. Don’t Load Your Holga

One thing that you’ll want to do is leave your Holga unloaded until you get to the other side. The film in your camera can be sensitive to the baggage scanners, and security may want to check inside!

2. Keep It Together

Keep all your camera gear in one bag, with spare films etc. This way security will find it easier to understand that you are a photographer, and are less likely to have you strip all your cameras down.

3. Be Helpful

If security ask questions, then be as helpful as possible. Bear in mind how strange the Holga camera looks and offer to help solve any problems that they may have.

4. Lead Box It Up!

You can get hold of lead boxes that will protect your exposed film through the baggage scanners. I personally think this is quite an extreme measure, but if you have one lying around its definitely worth taking.

Thanks to our reader gbmcinephoto for some of these tips!

I thought I would do the decent thing of showing everyone that has entered the Go Holga project, what they will be using.

Here are three quick pictures of the 120N..without some of the mods I am going to complete before it leaves!

Information on stopping wobbly out of focus Holga photographs.

One huge problem that new Holga users seem to have, is wobbly Holga photographs. The pictures seem out of focus, unclear and…well wobbly!

Fear not though, there is a simple explanation for this and its because of one button.

Turn your Holga upside-down and note the N and B button under the lens. This should be over on N and NOT ON B.

The video below explains:

The reason you need to do this is quite simple. The B setting of the Holga shutter button means Bulb. This means that as long as you hold your finger down, the shutter will stay open.

Have the shutter button over at N and the shutter will fire at around 1/125th of a second, regardless of how long you hold it down. This makes any movements in the hand unnoticeable.

All that is happening is that you are moving the camera when you are holding down on B and therefore distorting your photographs.

Hope this helps!
