“The IAM Union is outraged by Apple’s decision to close its Towson, Md., store—the first unionized Apple retail location in the United States—and abandon both its workers and a community that relies on it for critical services and its unique access to public transit. Apple’s claim that the collective bargaining agreement prevents relocation is simply false and raises serious concerns that this closure is a cynical attempt to bust the union. We are exploring all legal options and will work with elected officials and allies to hold Apple accountable. We stand with our IAM Coalition of Organized Retail Employees (IAM CORE) members and the community that depends on this store for essential access and support.”

TAKE ACTION: Tell Apple to Keep Its Commitment to Towson, Maryland

See photos from the No Kings rally here.

Bryant’s appearance comes as IAM Union member-activists gathered in Savannah for the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL) Conference, where IAM Union members are organizing to mobilize union voters and build power ahead of the 2026 elections. No Kings is a broad coalition of hundreds of community groups, including the ACLU, AFT, Indivisible, MoveOn, Public Citizen, SEIU, and 50501, among others. It is a movement of the people, reflecting the diversity of America itself – every background and generation, from all corners of the country, united to say that America does not belong to strongmen or greedy billionaires.

The IAM Union represents tens of thousands of members in Georgia, including at Lockheed Martin, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, Molson Coors, and military bases across the state.

“Because this fight—this moment—this movement—should be everybody’s fight,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “We did not elect a dictator. We did not elect a king. And we are not going to let Donald Trump run this country like it’s his own personal business. He must follow the Constitution and the rule of law—just like every president before him.”

Bryant connected the rally’s message to the IAM Union’s deep roots in Georgia, where the union was founded in 1888 by 19 railroad machinists in Atlanta who stood up to powerful corporate interests to demand dignity, respect, and a voice on the job.

“138 years later, we are still standing up and saying the same thing,” said Bryant. “Working people deserve dignity. We deserve respect. And we will not stay silent.”

Framing the current economic moment, Bryant pointed to rising costs and growing inequality as central challenges facing working families.

“We’re living in the richest country in the history of the world, yet working people are being told to do more with less while billionaires keep getting richer,” said Bryant. “That’s not an accident—it’s the result of policies written by corporate CEOs for corporate CEOs, at the expense of the people who actually build this country.”

Bryant emphasized that the labor movement’s fight is about more than economics—it is also about protecting democracy and fundamental rights.

“Across this country, they are trying to make it harder for working people to vote,” said Bryant. “When working people organize and vote, we win. So instead of changing their ideas, they’re trying to change the rules. That’s not democracy—that’s fear of the people.”

He called on attendees to take action beyond Election Day, urging them to engage in organizing, support unions, and even run for office.

“Voting is critical—but voting alone is not enough,” said Bryant. “Knock on doors. Make phone calls. Talk to your neighbors and co-workers. And yes—run for office yourself. Because if working people aren’t at the table, we’re on the menu.”

Bryant also urged continued solidarity with labor organizations and allies, including the Georgia AFL-CIO and the Savannah Central Labor Council.

“If you see workers on strike—join them on the picket line. If workers are organizing—let them know you’ve got their backs,” said Bryant. “Solidarity isn’t just a word—it’s an action.”

The investigations, announced by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, include 60 separate probes under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 into whether major trading partners have failed to take action against the importation of goods produced with forced labor.

“For decades, unfair trade practices and government-backed overproduction overseas have put American workers at a disadvantage,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “Workers in aerospace, defense, shipbuilding, and manufacturing should never have to compete with systems built on subsidies, weak labor protections, or forced labor.”

The investigations will examine whether countries’ policies or enforcement failures allow forced labor to remain embedded in global supply chains.

Forced labor is defined as work or service extracted from a person under threat of penalty and performed involuntarily. U.S. law has prohibited the importation of goods produced with forced labor for nearly a century, and international labor standards similarly recognize forced labor as a serious human rights violation.

Despite these longstanding prohibitions, the practice continues worldwide. According to the International Labour Organization, an estimated 28 million people globally were trapped in forced labor as of 2021, an increase of 2.7 million since 2016.

Companies that rely on forced labor gain an unfair advantage by dramatically lowering labor costs, allowing them to sell goods at artificially low prices that undercut responsible employers and threaten good jobs in the United States.

The forced labor investigations target 60 major U.S. trading partners, collectively accounting for more than 99% of U.S. imports in 2024.

Among the economies subject to investigation are China, South Korea, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, Vietnam, and members of the European Union, among many others.

While some countries have adopted measures intended to restrict goods made with forced labor, USTR officials say none of the economies under investigation appear to have both adopted and effectively enforced comprehensive bans on those imports.

Under Section 301 procedures, the United States will seek consultations with the governments involved while also gathering public input. USTR has invited public comments by April 15 and plans to begin public hearings on the investigations starting April 28.

In addition to forced labor, USTR is also examining global industrial overcapacity particularly in sectors such as steel and aluminum, where government subsidies and state-directed production have distorted global markets.

Countries such as China have long been criticized for producing far more steel than domestic demand requires, flooding international markets and driving down prices for manufacturers worldwide. Similar concerns have been raised about excess production in South Korea and other exporting nations.

IAM leaders say addressing these practices is essential to protecting American manufacturing jobs and rebuilding a fair global trading system.

The broader labor movement is also backing the investigations. The AFL-CIO praised the action as a necessary step to protect workers and enforce labor rights globally.

“For decades, countries have flooded global industrial markets in an effort to tilt the trade balance in their favor and undermine domestic producers at the expense of union workers and their jobs,” the federation said in a statement. “The fact that forced labor continues in global supply chains violates human dignity and labor rights while harming workers and manufacturers who refuse to participate in this exploitation.”

IAM Union leaders say confronting forced labor and global overcapacity is critical to ensuring American workers can compete on fair terms.

“American workers can compete with anyone in the world when the rules are fair,” said Bryant. “Trade enforcement that protects workers’ rights and stops unfair practices is essential to defending good-paying jobs and rebuilding U.S. manufacturing.”

The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) represents approximately 600,000 active and retired members in aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, rail, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries across North America.

Speakers included IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli, IAM District 6 Assistant Directing Business Representative Kerry Waddell, IAM Strategic Resources Director David White, IAM Legislative and Political Assistant Director Loren Almeroth, and IAM Local 1526 members Sandra Freytag and Sandra Lorenz, who work at the Whirlpool facility in Amana.

IAM research shows Whirlpool has invested more than $1 billion in Mexico over the last 20 years, tripling its workforce there and increasing exports, while the Amana plant, which once employed more than 3,000 workers, could be reduced to as few as 500 to 600 workers following anticipated second-quarter cuts announced by Whirlpool.

Jon Husted (R-OH), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Roger Marshall (R-KS), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) introduced the Railway Safety Act in the Senate.

This legislation largely resembles previous bipartisan legislation led by then-Sens. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) that passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee and received the endorsements from President Biden and President Trump. This legislation comes as safety continues to deteriorate across the rail industry, with derailments per million train miles have substantially increased across the major Class I railroads along with yard derailments as well.

The IAM Rail Division, which includes IAM District 19, the Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM) and the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC) Division, have been sounding the alarm for years on the unsafe practices of the railroads, often allowing trains to leave the yards with known safety defects.

The bill makes a number of critical safety reforms, including:

Closing a loophole to ensure that highly-trained and skilled Carmen are ones tasked with performing pre-departure mechanical safety inspections – as the regulations intend.

Prohibiting railroads from placing impossible time limits on safety inspections.

Ensuring that qualified mechanical inspectors (QMIs) are performing locomotive inspections.

Requiring a minimum of two crew members on-board every Class I freight train

Regulating the minimum use of critical wayside detector technology

Improving community and first responder safety

…and much more!

“IAM Rail Division members see firsthand the consequences of precision-scheduled railroading and Wall Street-driven cost cutting that have hollowed out safety practices across this industry,” said Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the International President for the IAM Rail Division. “This legislation restores common-sense safety standards by ensuring that trained, qualified railroaders — not the lowest-cost alternative — are performing critical inspections. Our members have been raising these concerns for years. Congress must move swiftly to advance this bill and put safety ahead of corporate profits.”

“I’d like to thank this bipartisan group of Senators for introducing the Railway Safety Act in the Senate,” said Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM) National President Matt Hollis. He added, “TCU has been advocating for this legislation for years. It’s time for Congress to act and pass this bill to not only ensure our members can perform the jobs they are trained to do, but to improve the safety and reduce the risk of another East Palestine for every community that our trains roll through.”

“This legislation is important to every Carman at every Class I railroad,” said Brotherhood of Railway Carmen Division General President Don Grissom. “Every safety-sensitive industry knows how important it is to have the right person doing the right job. This bill does just that. Right this minute we have unsafe trains that have not been properly inspected rolling through communities. Statistically, it is very likely that either today or tomorrow there will be a derailment in this country that could’ve been prevented if our Carmen are simply allowed to do their job. That should scare the hell out of everyone. It’s time for Congress to step in.”

“On the ground, our members are being pressured every day to rush inspections or allow trains to depart with known defects,” said Reece Murtagh, IAM District 19 President and Directing General Chair. “The Railway Safety Act reinforces what railroaders have always known: thorough inspections by skilled Carmen and Machinists save lives and prevent disasters. Congress must act to protect railroad workers and the communities we serve.”

“Arbitrary, snap tariff decisions—especially those targeting close allies like Canada—create uncertainty that endangers jobs in highly interdependent industries such as aerospace and manufacturing, raises prices for consumers, and makes it harder for businesses and workers to plan for the future. That instability also complicates collective bargaining, where predictability is essential to securing strong contracts and long-term job security.

“The IAM Union has long supported the use of targeted tariffs as one tool in a broader toolbox to protect workers from bad global actors who violate labor and human rights and undercut fair competition.

“The Supreme Court decision reinforces the U.S. Constitution’s clear assignment of authority to Congress to impose tariffs on foreign imports. Trade policy must be grounded in that framework and carried out with care.

“It is deeply troubling that throughout this process, it has been our members and everyday consumers who have shouldered the burden of these illegally imposed tariffs, while the very corporations that bankrolled this administration may now be first in line for rebates. Workers paid the price, so they should be the first ones to see relief.

“Trade policy should strengthen manufacturing and workers—not create unnecessary economic chaos.”

The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) represents approximately 600,000 active and retired members in aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, rail, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries across North America.

Nearly 250 members voted to reject the company’s latest contract offer and go on strike.

“The men and women of IAM Local 588 have given their time, their skills, and their dedication to Garlock for years, and they deserve a contract that reflects that,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “Our members deserve fair pay, a secure retirement, safe working conditions, and affordable health care. The entire IAM family stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters on the picket line, and we will use every resource at our disposal to help them win the contract they have earned.”

“Our members at Garlock have produced at a high rate over the years,” said IAM Union Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. “The Eastern Territory stands firmly behind Local 588. Our members are not asking for anything that isn’t fair, and we will remain on the picket lines until we have a contract that gives respect and dignity.”

“Our members go to work every day in an environment where safety should be the top priority,” said IAM District 65 Assistant Directing Business Representative Mark Pankewytch. “The company must do more to help members keep up with the cost of living. Healthcare costs continue to climb, and retirement security is being eroded. IAM Local 588 members are on that picket line because they deserve better, and they are going to fight for it.”

IAM Local 588 members are currently in discussions with Garlock Sealing Technologies and hope to reach a contract agreement that addresses the membership’s concerns.

The interim rule rates disabilities based solely on how Veterans function while symptoms are masked by medication. This approach would ignore flare-ups, worsening conditions, and the real-world limitations Veterans face on the job and in daily life. In effect, this tells Veterans that if medication helps you get through the day, your disability doesn’t count as much.

Click here to add a public comment

Our Union represents hundreds of thousands of workers in aerospace, defense, shipbuilding, rail, and federal service, many of whom are military Veterans working physically demanding, safety-critical jobs. Veterans often rely on medication to stay employed. That does not mean their service-connected disabilities have disappeared.

The interim rule also effectively undermines Ingram v. Collins (2025), a federal court decision reaffirming that the VA cannot rely on medication-suppressed symptoms when rating disabilities. Rather than following that ruling, the VA issued a regulation designed to render it meaningless.

Veterans should not lose hard-won legal protections because an agency finds them inconvenient. Disability compensation exists to reflect lost earning capacity and functional impairment, not how well medication masks pain during a brief exam.

Through the IAM Veterans Services Program, the IAM became the first and only labor union officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as a national Veterans Service Organization (VSO). This historic designation highlights our union’s long-standing commitment to supporting those who have served in the military. It ensures that IAM military Veterans and their families now have direct access to essential benefits, trusted representation, and a strong advocate to help them navigate the system they have honorably earned.

Veterans earned these benefits through service and sacrifice. They deserve better.

We are calling on the VA to withdraw or substantially revise this rule.

Rehmet, who serves as President of IAM Local 776B and President of the IAM’s Texas State Council, took the oath of office at the Texas State Capitol surrounded by family, supporters, and a large delegation of IAM Union members and Texas labor leaders who proudly stood in solidarity to witness this historic moment. Rehmet is the first rank-and-file union member ever elected to the Texas State Senate and only the second rank-and-file union member ever elected to the Texas Legislature.

A U.S. Air Force veteran and aircraft mechanic at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas, Rehmet is a skilled machinist and dedicated community organizer who has built a reputation as a principled leader committed to improving the lives of working families. His leadership journey has been shaped in part by political and leadership training through the IAM Union and the Texas AFL-CIO, where he developed the tools and experience to advocate effectively for working people both on and off the job.

“Taylor’s swearing-in is a proud and historic moment for our union and for working people everywhere,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “Taylor has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with IAM members and working families, fighting for fairness, dignity, and opportunity. He brings the voice of the shop floor to the State Capitol and understands firsthand the challenges workers face because he’s lived them. His leadership proves that union members are not only building our economy, they are shaping its future and advancing policies that strengthen working families and communities across Texas.”

Rehmet’s successful campaign earned national notoriety for its common-sense platform focused on lowering costs for working families, strengthening job opportunities, and putting people ahead of partisan politics.

“This is a proud moment for the IAM Union and the entire Texas labor movement,” said IAM Union Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “Taylor’s swearing-in sends a powerful message that working people belong in positions of leadership and influence. He has shown what is possible when union members step forward to lead, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside him to advance policies that lift working families across Texas.”

“I am deeply grateful to the IAM Union, IAM District 776 and the entire Texas labor movement for their unwavering support and belief in this campaign,” said Texas State Sen. Taylor Rehmet. “This moment belongs to the working people who organized, volunteered, and made their voices heard. I am honored and excited to begin this journey on behalf of Texas working families, and I will fight every day to deliver common-sense solutions that make life better for everyday working people across our state.”

“This is a huge win for Texas workers, who elected Taylor Rehmet from the shop floor to the Senate floor,” said Texas AFL-CIO President Leonard Aguilar. “It’s a historic day for our labor movement, who put in the work and demonstrated what’s possible when we come together in solidarity. Senator Rehmet is a beacon of hope not just for Texas, but for every union member and worker in the state.”

The IAM Union also extends its deep gratitude to IAM District 776 volunteers and IAM Union members across Texas who volunteered countless hours to support Rehmet’s campaign and continue to stand with him today.

Rehmet will be on the ballot for re-election on Nov. 3, 2026. The IAM Union is extremely proud of his leadership and is mobilized to re-elect Senator Rehmet and support pro-worker candidates up and down the ballot this November. The union will continue working with partners across the labor movement, including the Texas AFL-CIO and allied organizations, to ensure working families have a strong and lasting voice in the Texas Legislature.

The IAM Union looks forward to continuing to work with State Sen. Rehmet to advance pro-worker policies and ensure that the voices of working families are heard, respected and represented in the Texas Legislature.

The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) represents approximately 600,000 active and retired members in aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, rail, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries across North America.
