Reader:OK. I am probably 100% grey or white–I wouldn’t know since I have had my hair colored for 15+ years. I do, however, insist upon a white “streak” just to remind me…Anyway, I have had increasingly difficult times with hair colorists and am now a very dark brown/black. Sure, it was my natural color 20 years ago, but it is now a bit harsh and unnatural. I have been reluctant to go to my natural grey for a variety of reasons: my husband is totally white and we have an 18 yr. old son who doesn’t want “grandparents” for parents. My sister-in-law is in the same situation and everyone assumes she is the grandmother! Anyway, I have this box of Color Oops here on the counter and I am really tempted to try it. I just don’t know what to expect–especially from the recently-dyed roots. The weirdest thing is that I used to have thick, coarse, frizzy/curly hair which is now straight and fine. Oh, the mysteries of hormones! So, does anyone have advice or support here? I’ll be 60 next year but feel (of course) much younger and none of my older friends have grey hair so I am hesitate to look older than my grandparent friends while I am still trying to get my son through high school…

Going Gray Team: We don’t have any experience with Color Oops, can’t give any advice here, we can only assure you that there are plenty of women who are redefining beauty with a head full of gray hair. Gray hair doesn’t have to equate to being “old”, whatever “old” means to you (it doesn’t sound like this word gives you good feelings) but we hear your hesitation to go gray…understood. Many women who make this choice are very comfortable with who they are and where they are in their lives. It’s really a personal choice.

Food for thought: Often gray hair is associated with loss. Loss of pigmentation, loss of youth, loss of sexiness…

Going gray is somewhat unconventional, similar to the hobbies and interests of our readers.

Meet Miriam Schottland, an expert driver trainer with 20 years of experience in teaching counter-terrorism, accident avoidance, high performance driving and racing at the most prestigious advanced driver training facility in the country. Her clients have included the FBI, DIA, AAA, police departments, the State Department, and the military, as well as drivers who simply wanted to improve their driving skill. Miriam is one of the Chief Instructors for the Audi Club and has been Chief Instructor for the Corvette Club, BMW Club, Mazda Club, Chief of Instructor Training for Porsche Club, Senior and Classroom Instructor for Ferrari of Washington and National Auto Sports Association as well as many others. Her story:

I have always loved the color gray. When I was 24 and living in Manhattan, a woman got on a bus and sat across from me. She was dressed in all gray, had grey hair. I thought she was beautiful. Then and there, I decided that when my hair turned gray, I, too, was going to wear nothing but gray.

Now that I am completely gray, that’s the only color for me. All my clothes are gray. My cat is gray. My whole apartment is gray and both my cars are gray. As a matter of fact, the license plate on my race car is GRY WLF. This matches my ID at the race track where I teach racing, car control and high performance driving.

I love being with all the men out at the race track where I am chief Instructor for many of the car clubs. It keeps me motivated to look the best I can. I also started my own company, “DriveLab” which keeps me very busy both out at the race track and giving driving seminars.

I don’t know why women begin the “Grandmother Role” when they turn gray. They chop their hair off, get fat and don’t take care of themselves. They fall into the trap that society has laid for them. Hey, not me! Why can’t we Grey Haired Women be sexy too? My advice: Eat right, stay out of the sun and work out at the gym to keep you strong, shapely and toned.

Gray women, do not give up! Work on being healthy, sexy and beautiful! It pays off.

The scarf: Multi-seasonal. Always trendy. Limitless styling possibilities! Sporting a scarf is a fabulous way to show off your gray! Here’s a terrific video from Coldwater Creek showing 8 ways to tie a scarf. The model isn’t gray… but maybe we can convince her (wink).

Tip: Bring on the color! Some suggestions: purple, warm orange, fuscia, pink cobalt blue, emerald green and ruby red. Try a color you swore you’d never wear. You might be surprised…

Attention ladies living in the tri-state area!! (In the US that’s basically New York City and the surrounding region extending into New Jersey and Connecticut.)

The Today Show is having a Seize the Gray! makeover to help you embrace your gray hair.

They are looking for models with great before pictures for these two scenarios:1) Has or had long gray hair and willing to cut it short or already did (as long as they have that before picture!)2) Has long gray hair that could be styled nicely without any cutting/dying to promote keeping hair long as well. You would still need a before when hair is looking dry, windblown, etc.

You need to be 60 years or younger and live near the tri-state area. All you need to do is email TODAY! and let them know why you want or deserve a gray hair makeover. Here’s the link with all the details:

Going gray is not just about ditching the dye. It’s about making a powerful statement.

It’s an expression, and perhaps an opinion. It’s making firm to do something by determining upon an action.

Going gray is a purposeful, deliberate and intentional act. It defies society’s standards, squashes paradigms and surprises expectations.

Going gray is brave, bold and courageous. Should we throw in the word fierce? We think it’s fitting.
