Visit ‘Bewah’ Caves and ‘Taat’ Caves

The name of Gua Bewah is derived from the homonymous hill it is located in, close to the shores of the fish rich and popular Tasik Kenyir (Kenyir Lake). The lake was created artificially by a huge dam, and is one of the most important tourist destinations of the sultanate. Reasons are the interesting nature with caves and waterfalls, the rain forest and abundant fishing possibilities.

The cave is really notable for its rich and diverse cave life, typical for a tropical cave. There are various crabs, spiders, insects, and of course bats to be found. The bat guano, the food the bats drop and the bodies of dead bats are the begin of the food chain in the cave. This feeds the smaller fauna such as insects and invertebrates, especially crickets, cockroaches and spiders. They are food for larger creatures like small mammals, frogs and toads and cave snakes.

An archaeologic excavation on 1970 revealed the skeleton of a Neolithic man, kitchen utensils, axes and tools. Sever caves with archaeologic remains are now flooded by the lake.

Nearby is another cave, Gua Taat (Taat Cave), which does not have electric light. Boats land at the exceptional cave entrance with a totally flat and horizontal ceiling. There is an iron stair leading a few steps up and into the cave. The rest is almost level floor with nice views out of the entrance. The word taat means someone who is very loyal, obedient and respectful for someone. The cave was named so after the local villagers who were very loyal to their chief.

The through cave is praised to have the most beautiful formations of the state. One passage is sometimes flooded by water, depending on the level of the lake. There have been excavations in the cave which revealed flaked tools, pottery, and food remains (molluscs) from the Hoabinhian period (14,000 to 10,000 years BP). The excursion with a visit to both caves may take a full day, as the boat need two hours to reach the caves.

Kelah Sanctuary

Deep in our pristine jungle rivers swim a fish so majestic, so beautiful and so elusive, it has become a holy grail for Malaysian and international anglers. The Kelah invariably represents the ultimate challenge for these sportsmen. To locate this fish is already a triumph. Then comes the challenge of enticing it to take a bait, lure or fly.

Herbs Park

The Taman Herba Tasik Kenyir ( or Kenyir Lake Herbal Park ) is located in Pulau Sah Kacil with the size of almost 15.84 hectares. It is planted with more than 200 types of traditional herbal species that includes Tongkat Ali, Kacip Fatimah, Haji Samad, Misai Kuching, Mas Cotak and others.

It is above 7 kilometers from Pengkalan Gawi and is only accessible by speed boat the requires 10 minutes to reach there. There herbs park is one of the important destination visited by the tourists who want to see the myriad of herbal plants that are for therapeutic and general healthcare purpose. In this park, you also can find the interpretative Centre where information on the herbs is found and an Aboretum which is the storehouse of the herbal species.

The visitors also have the opportunity to savor the herbal beverages such as Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah that are renowned for their efficacious nutriments.

Waterfalls

There are many spectacular waterfalls in Tasik Kenyir. These waterfalls are popular sport for picnicking as they provide a cool, relaxed and rejuvenating ambience that awaits its visitors. A picnic at these falls is featured in almost every itinerary. Better basic amenities like toilets, changing rooms and rest areas are provided at these popular spots.

There are few popular waterfalls here : Tembak, Lasir and Soak.

• Tembak – Unlike Lasir and Soak, Tembak waterfall is actually composed of five rapids of fast flowing cascades, With a large camping area at its side, it is without doubt, the most popular destination for campers. A hiking trail leading to the top of the fall rewards the hiker with a magnificent view of the waterfall and its surroundings. A boat ride from Pengkalan Gawi to Tembat takes about an hours.
• Lasir – Located 16km (20-30 minutes boat ride) to the south of Pengkalan Gawi, is one of the most popular picnic spots in Tasik Kenyir. With a majestic fall of some 500 feets, Lasir drops gracefully onto a multi tiered level of boulders and rocks forming cascading showers of foaming cascading showers of forming white sprays of the water.
• Soak – A mere 15minutes boat ride from Pengkalan Gawi, Saok waterfall is fast gaining popularity among holiday markers. Cascading waters over its rocky terraces and boulders and a flat sandy area at ground level make it a perfect picnic spot for the whole family

Fly with either Malaysian Airlines, Air Asia, or Firefly. They operate regular flights to the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). From the Sultan Mahmud Airport, you could take a taxi straight to Tasik Kenyir. The fare is about RM 60.00, or if you are heading to Kuala Berang the fare is about RM30.00.

By Coach
We will recomend you to use Tasik Kenyir Ekspress for public transport to get to Tasik Kenyir. The bus will take you from Hentian Putra Station, Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Berang, Terengganu. The rate approximately around RM31.30 per person.
