Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi – Friday, January 30, 1948

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (often called Mahatma Gandhi) was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist who felt Gandhi was sympathetic to the Muslims.

January 30 is observed as the Martyrs’ Day in India remembering those who laid their lives for the Nation.

On this day a two minute silence is observed at 11 am throughout the country, in the memory of our father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi as well as other martyrs who have laid down their lives.

On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was shot while he was walking to a platform from which he was to address a prayer meeting. The assassin, Nathuram Godse, was a Hindu nationalist with links to the extremist Hindu Mahasabha, who held Gandhi responsible for weakening India by insisting upon a payment to Pakistan. Godse and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte were later tried and convicted; they were executed on November 15, 1949.

The Martyr’s Column at the Gandhi Smriti marks the spot where Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. The waist-high stone marker bears Gandhi’s last words “He Rām” (Devanagari: हे! राम), which may be translated as “Oh God”. The column is located in the garden behind Birla House (now a museum) in New Delhi where Gandhi was staying as a guest.

Gandhi’s Memorial at Raj Ghat, New Delhi, marks the spot where Gandhi was cremated on January 31, 1948. The memorial bears the epigraph “He Rām” (Devanagari: हे! राम), which may be translated as “Oh God”. These are widely believed to be Gandhi’s last words after he was shot.

Gandhi’s ashes were poured into urns and were sent to every nook and corner of India for people to pay respects to the Mahatma.

• Blood stained dhoti and shawl and the watch worn by Mahatma Gandhi when he was assassinated.

• Urns in which his ‘ashes’ were carried for immersion into various rivers; the wooden frame in which the main urn was taken to Prayag (Allahabad) and the cloth bags in which the ‘ashes’ were kept for being carried to Prayag and Rameshwaram.
• Panels containing the favourite hymns-’VAISHNAVJAN’ and ‘Lead Kindly Light’.
• Panels containing selected photographs and newspapers related to the Gandhi’s assassination and cremation.
• Selected opinions of world leaders on Gandhi.
• A wall-size photograph with the quote ‘My Life is My Message’.

Jennifer Maestre (born 1959 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is a Massachusetts-based artist, internationally known for her unique pencil sculptures.

She is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a BFA degree from the Massachusetts College of Art.

She derives most of her inspiration from the form and texture of the sea urchin. To make the pencil sculptures, Jennifer makes use of a variety pencils, nails and stitching. She takes hundreds of pencils, cuts them into small 1-inch sections, drills a hole in each section, sharpens them all and sews them together.

Google Plus – More Options for Google+ Badges

The Google+ badge is a customizable widget that helps you connect your site to a Google+ page. Featuring both an add to circle and a +1 button, the Google+ badge makes it simple for your users to add your Google+ business page to their Google+ circles and +1 your page, all without leaving your site.

Google officially unveiled Google+ badge in developer preview on November 9, 2011. And soon it was available to all users on all sites on November 16, 2011.

On January 26, 2012, Google have added more options for integrating the Google+ badge into your website first in developer preview (and soon available to all your users).

As I have a preview account, I received this email from Google+ Platform Preview:

The Google+ badge may show a link to your Google+ page, an Add to circles button, and a +1 button. By default, the badge will have a width of 300px, a height of 131px, and include all three elements.

The width could be set between 100 and 1024 pixels. A minimum width of 100px is required for a 131px height badge, a minimum width of 170px is required for a 69px height badge.

There are two valid heights, 69px and 131px. The badge will not render if an invalid height is specified. You may have a Small Badge of height 69px or a Standard Badge of height 131px.

The color theme of the badge, use dark when placing the badge on a page with a dark background.

63rd Republic Day of India

Today, India celebrates 63rd Republic Day. The Republic Day parade held every year in New Delhi makes the celebration even more beautiful and entertaining.

One of the most joyful part of the Republic Day parade is National Bravery Award winning children riding on the backs of decorated elephants. However, in recent years the tradition of elephant rides seems to be replaced with open army jeeps.

But today’s Google Doodle dedicated to the Republic Day of India reminds us about the tradition of young brave-hearts riding on elephants in the parade.

Twenty-four children including eight girls have been selected for the National Bravery Awards for 2011, including five children posthumously.

Google Doodle Celebrates Republic Day of India

Google celebrates India’s 63rd Republic Day by publishing a colorful doodle depicting three decorated elephants, each with two National Bravery Award winning children and a tricoloured umbrella on it’s back. The Google logo appears as a rangoli-like motif in the background. The doodle when clicked leads to a search result page with news and information about Republic Day of India.

This is the second Republic Day of India doodle to feature on Google search page. Google also celebrated India’s 61st Republic Day publishing a doodle on January 26, 2010 that showed the Republic Day action in the air, three fighter aircraft decorating the sky with the Tricolour.

Previously, Payment Method for non-USA affiliates was only Check via Postal Mail. This resulted in considerable delay in receiving the payment in hand.

For example, the payment date for last payment that has reached my hand was September 20, 2011. Believe it or not, I received the check sent via Postal Mail only on October 18, 2011. I deposited the check to my Bank account the next day. But the money was credited to my account on November 4, 2011. So I had to wait for about six weeks from the day payent was sent to receive the money in hand.

They have sent my latest payment check via Postal Mail on December 20, 2011. I have not yet received the check at the time of publishing this article.

New Social Media Network – DigitalPal

Dutch-based IT company DigitalPal, a new social media network aimed to gather and connect people around media – namely, movies, music, books, and video games, launched in beta on January 16, 2012. DigitalPal allows users to discuss their favorite movies, music, books and games with pals who share their tastes.

You may store and share movies you want to see, playlists of music you want to hear, books you want to read, and games you want to play in real time. You may rate pals’ and your favorites, give and receive personal recommendations, add to your wishlist. With Catalog feature, users can make their collections public and help a pal in search for a particular movie, book or game or just use it for their own filing system.

When you sign in for the first time, the site takes you to MoviePal, one of the four services. The other services are MusicPal, BookPal and GamePal.

You are asked to rate your 10 favorite movies on a scale of one to 10. You can either rate movies that are among the most popular movies or you can search for a movie you want to rate. You may also leave a movie for later. Movies you rate will be used to calculate recommendations for your taste.

While rating, you may read more about the movie, or even watch a trailer.

I saw the trailer for Schindler’s List. But for The Godfather, I got the message – ‘This movie is private’. And for The Silence of the Lambs, I got the message – ‘Embedding disabled by request, Watch on YouTube’.

After rating 10 movies, you are taken to Recommendations page with more movies, and are asked to refine the selection process so MoviePal may recommend more movies to you.

You may skip a movie, add to wishlist, catalog, find similar or recommend to your pals. You may even add a comment or watch trailer till you have found a movie to recommend to your pals.

Once you have selected a movie to recommend, you will be shown a My Pals box to check out one or more pals. You may also edit a pre-filled message for your pals’ timeline.

Your pal will see a status update via DigitalPal on his timeline about the movie that you have recommended to him.

The service features a board for users to display all of their wishlisted and rated movies stored. You may also add a comment and discuss with pals, or remove a movie from your wishlist. Having them all in one place makes it easy to recommend them to pals. Connect with your pals and start sharing your experiences.

There are three more features – Rated, Wishlist, and Catalog where you organize your rated, wishlisted and cataloged movies respectively.

Organize your past experience, rate movies and show your pals what you like and dislike.

Add movies you wish to see to your wishlist. Have them all in one place and use it as a time saver when deciding what to watch.

The same way you may share your experience for music, books and games. On MusicPal, tracks from all artists are always sorted by popularity which also helps in exploring new music.

WordPress News – Stop Censorship

On Wednesday, January 18, 2012 WordPress.org joins many sites around the web, from small personal blogs to internet companies like Mozilla, Wikipedia, Reddit, and Cheezburger sites, going dark to protest two proposed laws in the United States, called SOPA and the PROTECT IP Act. Many sites are driving their visitors to sites like americancensorship.org to take action and help fight the passage of the Protect IP Act.

The popular blogging platform WordPress have appealed to their more than 60 million users on their official blog on January 17, 2012 to stop censorship.

Protests Against SOPA and PIPA

The English version of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia blacks out its website at midnight Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, January 18, 2011 for 24 hours in protest against anti-piracy laws being proposed in the US. Wikipedia is considered one of the Internet’s most popular websites, with millions of visitors daily.

The Stop Online Piracy Act in the US House of Representatives and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate would allow the US authorities to seek to block sites that allow illegal file sharing.

Users who visited the English Wikipedia just before midnight Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday were greeted with a message on the main page that read:

Then just at midnight Eastern Standard Time (05:00 GMT) on Wednesday English Wikipedia blacked out globally. The site is unavailable for 24 hours and is replaced by a black screen with information about the protest:

Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia who first announced the move on his Twitter account Monday, said the bills are a threat to the free, open, and secure web.

Jimmy Wales (@jimmy_wales) has been tweeting about the proposed Black Wednesday protest.

First, he warned students to do their homework early.

Then he announced the official hashtags to use as #WikipediaBlackout #sopa and #pipa.

Later, he made the formal announcement about the Black Wednesday protest in a press release.

Several internet companies such as user-generated news site Reddit, the blog Boing-Boing, Mozilla, the Cheezburger network and others are also taking part in the blackout against the Hollywood-backed legislation.
