The Golden Community Kayak Rodeo starts tonight at the Clear Creek Whitewater Park.  This event is open to all paddlers of all skill levels.  Everyone is welcome to watch or to participate!  Registration begins at 4:30, and competition runs from 5:30 till dusk.  The rodeo takes place both this week (Wednesday the 22nd) and next (Wednesday the 29th).

Golden resident Rob Burnett will be at the Mountaineering Center tonight, presenting highlights of the “Yak Attack,” a mountain bike race held in central Nepal.  The race, which takes place in the Himalayas, is the highest mountain bike race in the world.  There will also be a tea bar, hosted by Nepali Tea Traders.  The event is free and open to the public.  It runs from 5-8pm, with the Yak Attack presentation at 6.

The Historic Preservation Board meets tonight in City Council Chambers.  They have a scientist coming from Fort Collins to discuss preserving what’s left of the Welch Ditch.  Richard Gardner will also appear before the board to encourage them to create a new historic district called Courthouse Hill, which will include Foothills Art Center and several other structures in its vicinity.  Finally, they will discuss the new historic designation plaques for the cemetery.

The Railroad Museum is opening a new exhibit today: Life on Colorado Railroads: The American Passenger Car Era, 1930 to 1970.  Check it out, and while you’re there, enjoy one of their Saturday train rides.  The museum is open from 9 to 5, and the rides will operate from 10 to 4.

Senator Mark Udall will be in Golden tomorrow morning, hosting a “listening session” about his Browns Canyon National Monument and Wilderness Area proposal. The draft bill, based on more than a year’s worth of community input, would cover 22,000 acres between Salida and Buena Vista on the Arkansas River, including 10,500 acres of new wilderness. The Jeffco 5 Grassroots organization will meet tomorrow morning at 10, at 640 11th St. This group is studying the issue of whether the county board of commissioners should be increased from 3 members to 5. Questions? E-mail karenoxman@aol.com for more information.

The Denver Fly Fishing Section of the Colorado Mountain Club normally holds their meetings on the third Thursday of the month (which would be tonight).  This month it will be Friday (tomorrow night).  John Harcourt, former owner of the Golden River Fly Shop, guide, and fly fisherman for the past 55+ years, will give a presentation on “Why Glenwood Springs was voted the #1 fishing town in America”.   The talk will be held at the Mountaineering Center at 7 PM.
