“How To” Nightlife – California Academy of Sciences: Jan 12

If you need a little push to set your New Year Resolutions into motion, perhaps the California Academy of Sciences can be of some assistance. With the help of SkillShare, Make: SF, The Distilled Man, and The Bike Kitchen, the focus of the “How To” Nightlife held on January 12 (from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) will offer what they hope will be the ultimate how-to workshop. The cost to enjoy this event is $12.

Butterfly Habitat Volunteer Day – Stow Lake Boat House: Jan 14

If your New Year’s Resolution was to give more to your community, why don’t you join in the fun with other volunteers, SF Parks Alliance, and the Recreation and Parks Department, as they create a butterfly habitat on Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park. Participants will meet at the Stow Lake Boat House on Stow Lake Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An educational talk will take place during the lunch break. You may look forward to guest speakers that include ecologists, naturalists, and historians who have tons of information to share about the history of Strawberry Hill. There is no cost to participate. Necessary tools will be provided. You should bring a bagged lunch and water for this activity.

2012 Lunar New Year – SF County Fair Building: Jan 21

The SF Botanical Garden Society is proud to bring in the Lunar New Year on January 21, where a celebration and flower market will be held at the San Francisco County Fair Building (9th and Lincoln Way) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To pay homage to the Year of the Dragon, prepare yourself for a free event that is filled with food, flowers, festivities, and more gorgeous blooms. This year, classical stringed instruments and cultural dance performances by Alice Fong Yu School will entertain. There will be lion dancers and magician Jaden Huang. The Chinese Historical Society of America will deliver a delightful puppet show. Other highlights include a Tea Room and Tea Tastings by Vital Tea Leaf, educational activities, and an Asian Art Museum Children’s Art Center for the kiddies.

A range of tasty edibles centered on Asian cuisine will be offered – thanks to the likes of the Pacific Coast Farmer’s Market, Tru Gourmet Organic Dim Sum, and Golden Chariot Bakery. From an early 20th century bridal carriage from Dynasty Rosewood to the inviting colors of traditional Lunar New Year plants and flowers – there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy. For more details, you can call (415) 412-3230.

Arts & Sciences 5K – Conservatory of Flowers: Jan 29

The Dolphin South End Runners (DSE) is the oldest and largest running club in San Francisco – often hosting events, such as the Arts & Sciences 5K being held on January 29 at Golden Gate Park. The race will begin at 9 a.m. with runners meeting at the Conservatory of Flowers for the start. Some of the highlights of the course include Stow Lake Drive, MLK Drive, Park & Rec baseball fields, and Bowling Green Drive. The museum loop/music concourse is also included. For more information (such as the registration closing date), click here.

deYoung Artist-in-Residence (Dana Zed) – deYoung Museum: until Jan 29

The January Artist-in-Residence at deYoung Museum is Dana Zed (“House of Mirror Reflections”), who uses mirrors, glass, and changing light to distort the way people view themselves. Zed will draw visitors at the museum and encourage them to draw themselves and one another. The portraits will be printed, and then hung on the wall. After the closing reception, you can reclaim your masterpieces. The Artist-in-Residence is available at the museum from Wednesday to Sunday – 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturday, January 28 (3 to 5 p.m.), a closing reception will offer light refreshments and live music in honor of Dana Zed’s visit to the museum.

The annual Outside Lands Festival has come and gone, leaving behind memories of high-energy performances and the scent of gourmet treats. The aftermath of the music extravaganza still lingers as participants reminisce on their favorite acts. Whether you come for the assortment of musical styles or to indulge in deep fried pickles, there is always something for everyone to enjoy. Below is a recap of just some of the memorable acts that rocked the event.

Day 1 – Friday

The weather wasn’t exactly cooperating with Outside Lands as festivalgoers were met with cloudy skies and a slight chill. However, the musicians helped warm the atmosphere. The Panhandle stage offered the sounds of The Limousines – a Bay Area band that delivered pure electronica and the intrigue of masked drummers. A cover of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” set the listeners in the right mood.

A huge crowd gathered to listen to the set of the Welsh trio Joy Formidable, which combined thumping bass drums, melodic vocals, and mid-song commentary. Their set only consisted of six songs, but each one ran more than five minutes long – proving to the crowd they are worthy of a place on the larger stages.

The crowd gyrated as Sarah Barthel of Phantogram shared her stomp-like dancing techniques, as the group offered a set that included “Mouthful of Diamonds,” “You Are The Ocean,” and “When I’m Small.” The combination of interesting music and visual entertainment from Toro Y Moi drew a crowd response that included shaking and dancing. The group, which includes two keyboardists, a bassist and a drummer, played “Still Sound” to an upbeat crowd.

By the end of the day, headliner Phish, offered a collection of upbeat, pop-like tunes that the mixed crowd of diehard fans and interested listeners devoured. They played for 3 ½ hours – demonstrating they still have one of the most impressive displays of performance – continuing from start to finish with the same energy.

Day 2 – Saturday

The sun decided to take a front row seat to the festivities on Day 2 of the Outside Lands Festival, which included a growing hometown crowd that showed their appreciation for the San Francisco-based The Stone Foxes. On the Twin Peaks Stage, the British band The Vaccines performed the band’s cover of The Standells’ “Sometimes Good Guys Wear White” and “Norgaard” – receiving high praise.

The Chicago rock band OK Go performed on the main Lands End Stage – complete with hand bells, white gloves, and a solo performance that took place in the crowd. During their set, big hits such as “Get Over It,” “Here It Goes Again,” and “A Million Ways” filled the air. The Arctic Monkeys squeezed in about 15 songs into their one-hour set, and their energy and enthusiasm was definitely felt by the crowd. Their finale included “When The Sun Goes Down,” which prompted crowd surfing and high levels of participation.

For hip hop lovers, The Roots did not disappoint. They tore through upbeat tunes and the occasional rock tribute – making the crowd dance and admire their musical talent. Their set actually ran over 10 minutes, but by the end of the day – no one minded.

The English alternative rock band Muse attracted a neverending crowd of fans that extended from the main stage to the end of Polo Field. The band played “Undisclosed Desires,” “Time is Running Out,” “Starlight,” and “United States of Eurasia,” which was accompanied by images of political statements displayed on two large video screens. The release of large balloons into the crowd capped off their encore.

Day 3 – Sunday

The third day of the Outside Lands Festival continued the energetic and satisfying pace of Friday and Saturday. The opening noon act was a hometown group called the Fresh & Onlys. They played to a relaxing atmosphere (with their song “Waterfall”), but soon recharged the crowd by delivering the lively “Peacock and Wing.”

The versatility of Merrill Garbus of the colorful tUnE-yArDs illuminated the crowd with her live music explosion that incorporated drums, vocals, face paint, and an ukelele. The classy soulful sounds of Mavis Staples were fully embraced, including “I’ll Take You There” – a song she sung during her Staple Singers days.

Sweden’s Little Dragon certainly captivated audiences with hits, such as “Please Turn” and “Ritual Union,” as well as with frontwoman Yukimi Nagano, who entertained the crowds while bouncing about and dancing to the beat. Beirut offered additional international flair with Balkan rhythms delivered by way of accordion. To finish off the last day of Outside Lands entertainment, Arcade Fire sent listeners afire, causing many to jump up and down, chant, and mosh.

Overall, another successful Outside Lands Festival has taken place at Golden Gate Park. Next year, act fast to take advantage of ticket discounts so you don’t miss out on whatever promoters have up their sleeve. What was your favorite part of 2011 Outside Lands?

August in Golden Gate Park brings you one of San Francisco’s premier music and art events – the Outside Lands Festival. There’s also something for the local gardener or plant enthusiast. Perhaps you’d like to treat the kids to a cultural event that parades through the park. You may even want to stretch your legs at the cross-country event held at the end of the month.

Just some of the events at Golden Gate Park to look forward to in August include:

13th Annual Summer Gardening Fair – August 6

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., pay a visit to the San Francisco Botanical Garden for a free gardening event. This is your chance to learn more about plants and gardening, join a local plant organization, buy plants and accessories, or just take in the demonstrations. Interested parties should enter at the main gate of San Francisco Botanical Garden.

San Francisco’s Festival of the Chariots – August 7

If you’re looking for something to do on Sunday, head to Fulton and Lincoln, where you will encounter an interactive parade that starts at 11 a.m. at John F. Kennedy Drive and Transverse Drive with a handful of people pulling three large chariots by ropes. Making its way down JFK Drive, the parade will end up at Sharon Meadows (on the corner of JFK Dr. and Stanyan Street). Here, you can feast upon a free vegetarian meal, browse books and exhibits, as well as enjoy ancient Indian dances, music and live theater performances. This free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more details, check out http://www.sfkrishna.org.

Birding Field Trip – August 7 and 8

Bird enthusiasts should meet at the front gate of the San Francisco Botanical Garden to take in the sights of resident, migrant, and vagrant feathered creatures. This trip is especially helpful for those just starting out in bird watching. The opportunity is free if you are a San Francisco resident (when you bring identification for residency or garden membership status). If you live outside of the city, the garden charges $7 per person. The Golden Gate Audubon Society will hold this event on August 7 and 8 at 10:30 a.m. For more information, contact Ginny Marshall (ginnybirder@sbcglobal.net or Dominik Mosur (polskata@yahoo.com).

Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival – August 12 –14

It’s that time of the year again…when the Outside Lands 3-day festival comes to Golden Gate Park. Purchase a single-day ticket or spring for a pass to the full event. Some of the music performers ready to entertain include Erykah Badu, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Phish, the Black Keys, and MGMT. Get your taste buds ready for gourmet funnel cakes, organic S’mores, and crispy mac & cheese. Wine tasting offers the best of local reds and whites. Plenty of art and eco-friendly activities are also lined up. Additional details can be found at http://www.sfoutsidelands.com/

Lindy in the Park 15th Anniversary Dance & Potluck Picnic – August 14

Free swing dancing in Golden Gate Park has been offered for the past 15 years, and it’s time to celebrate this special milestone with a potluck picnic and extended music/dance hours. Come with an offering, such as a main dish, side dish, paper plates, napkins, beverages, ice, cups, and/or plastic utensils. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and most likely last until 3 p.m. Keep an eye out for more details by checking http://www.lindyinthepark.com/

Cross Country 5K – August 28

Ready to get your heart pumping? The 5K race begins at 9 a.m. on the upper/dirt track of the Polo Field and will finish at the lower/paved track. Prepare for a course filled with grass, dirt paths and paved paths. All participants will receive a ribbon – with the top five overall races taking home place ribbons. To enter the race, the following fees apply: 18 and over ($5) and ages 11 to 17 ($3). Participants ages 10 and under are free.
