Teacher Appreciation Night Friday November 6!

Fred Terry
Fred is a long time staple at the Golden Lion and in the Flagler Area. He was featured on the CD Effigy by the band Mirror Images and also on a a Solo CD, Pieces Of A Puzzle. His smooth acoustic guitar style and rich baritone voice make listening a pleasure as he covers a wide variety of tunes from Cat Stevens to Jimmy Buffett to Goo Goo Dolls.

When Fred is away from the mic, he is busy at home with a wife and two children. During the week, he is an assistant principal in the Flagler County
School District.

End Of Summer Party November 7th!

Anthony Wild is an American Original! He brings to the stage a unique blend of Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Rock and Jazz combined with his electrifying stage presence.

This will be a great event and, unlike Halloween weekend, you will actually know to whom you are talking!

Labor Day Weekend is for Northerners. In Flagler Beach we say goodbye to summer the first weekend of November! The time change has come, Halloween is over, the tourists are gone (for a while at least). It's time for a "private" party. A salute to all of our local regulars and a welcome for our "half year" regulars.

It's Here! The Weekend! Join us for steel drum grooves by Kelvin Hart on Friday Night and live reggae by Zebbhi Niyah on Saturday night. Halloween Costume Contest registration begins at 8:30 pm, along with our Limbo contest! How low can you go?

As if a costume party and Full Moon Luau aren't enough to make Saturday night special, we are also holding an Agavero promotion! Join us for samples, raffles, and giveaways all night long!

Agavero Tequila Liqueur is bottled at Los Camachines Distillery in Jalisco, Mexico where the Blue Agave plant is grown. This officially designated region includes the state of Jalisco, parts of adjoining states and the town of Tequila for which the spirit is named.

The master distiller begins the process by hand blending his own select 100% Blue Agave Reposado and Anejo Tequilas that have been separately aged in specially charred, white oak casks. The Reposado Tequila is aged for nearly a year and the Anejo Tequila no less than two years. The Tequila blend is then hand blended with Agavero's secret ingredient, the essence of Damiana Flower, a flower indigenous to the hot mountains of Jalisco. Throughout history, Damiana has also been rumored to stir up the emotions of individuals. Agavero's unique and wonderful combination offers a scintillating aroma for the nose transcended only by the rich and flavorful character for the palate.

FLAGLER BEACH -- Thirteen years ago, Mark Woods came to visit and never left.
On a mental break from life as a counselor at a Missouri juvenile detention center, Woods landed at his parents' pad to figure things out. And that's when the beach called.
"That was kind of a crossroads," said Woods, 37, now a bartender at the Golden Lion Cafe on State Road A1A.
Woods -- also called "Tikitender" from his tiki hut-serving days at a local resort -- is known for wearing kilts ("They're very comfy; I recommend every man tries one.") and for his red goatee and easygoing grin.

1. Beaujolais [BOE-zjoh-lay] Nouveau is always released the third Thursday of November, regardless of the start of the harvest.

2. The region of Beaujolais is 34 miles long from north to south and 7 to 9 miles wide. There are nearly 4,000 grape growers who make their living in this picturesque region just north of France's third largest city, Lyon.

3. All the grapes in the Beaujolais region must be picked by hand. These are the only vineyards, along with Champagne, where hand harvesting is mandatory.

4. Gamay (Gamay noir Jus Blanc) is the only grape permitted for Beaujolais. While certain California wineries may label their wine "Gamay Beaujolais" this is not the same grape variety as what is grown in France, and is quite different in taste and growing habits.

5. Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be made from grapes grown in the 10 crus (great growths) of Beaujolais-only from grapes coming from the appellations of Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages.

6. Beaujolais Nouveau owes its easy drinkability to a winemaking process called carbonic maceration, also called whole berry fermentation. This technique preserves the fresh, fruity quality of the wine, without extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins.

7. Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be drunk young-in average vintages it should be consumed by the following May after its release. However, in excellent vintages (such as 2000) the wine can live much longer and can be enjoyed until the next harvest rolls around.

8. Serve Beaujolais Nouveau slightly cool, at about 55 degrees Fahrenheit-the wine is more refreshing and its forward fruit more apparent than if you serve it at room temperature.

9. Approximately 1/3 of the entire crop of the Beaujolais region is sold as Beaujolais Nouveau.

10. The region of Beaujolais is known for its fabulous food. The famed Paul Bocuse Restaurant is just minutes from the heart of Beaujolais, as is Georges Blanc's eponymous culinary temple. These great restaurants have plenty of Beaujolais on their wine lists. This quintessential food wine goes well with either haute cuisine or Tuesday night's meat loaf.

Did you know that the Golden Lion is participating in the "Saving Hearts in Flagler County" campaign This week?

Customers can help Florida Hospital-Flagler build a new Cardiac Catheter Lab, which will one day provide lifesaving procedures, such as stents and angioplasties. Just eat lunch at the Golden Lion for the week of Sept. 21 to Sept. 25 from 11-2:30 and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the campaign.

Want to get into the spirit of "Talk Like A Pirate Day?" Join us this Saturday (Sept 19) for a Pirate Party on International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

An easy and inexpensive pirate costume:

1. Find a pair of old black pants and fringe the edges with scissors.

2. Tuck in a big gold or white blouse. Tie a red scarf around the pirate's waist and a bandanna around his/her head head.

3. Clip on some gold costume jewelry, then add an eye patch and a pirate's hook (all inexpensive party store finds).

4. Dab on black face paint for a beard and missing-tooth makeup.

5. If you've got a stuffed bird in your toy box, use craft wire to attach it to your pirate's shirtsleeve.

What is International Talk Like A Pirate Day? Talk Like A Pirate Day is an original concept created in a moment of temporary insanity by John Baur and Mark Summers. What once was a goofy idea celebrated by a handful of friends has turned into an international phenomenon that shows no sign of letting up.

Since I operate under the "Any Excuse To Get Out Of My Khaki Shorts" mantra, I fully embrace "Talk Like A Pirate Day". Two years ago, I merely talked like a pirate ("Wanna Make My Roger Jolly?"). Last year I arrived to work in full on pirate gear! This year I will do the same, but I am hoping to get my co-workers and customers in on the act!

Labor Day is said to signal the end of summer. Not so at the Lion. Labor Day just means the beginning of beautiful days with temperatures in the 80s and cooler nights accompanied by a nice Atlantic breeze.
