On the golfchats.com website, I have curated from other instructors to give you a different view on instruction. There is a section on Rules and Etiquette as well. This is all designed to help you with your golf game! I hope this helps your game. If you need further help on finding what you need, please email me at melsolegolf@gmail.com. While you are practicing, pay attention to both the direction the ball takes off. And the direction that the ball curves. The ball will be traveling in the direction of the club head angle. And the ball will curve depending on the clubhead path. If the ball takes off straight and curves off to the right (a common shot for right-handed golfers), you know that the clubface angle was square at impact, and the clubhead path was moving to the left. The clubface was open to the clubhead path. If the clubface is open at impact, the bill will take off to the right. However, if the clubhead path is cutting across the ball, a big slice will result. I have several dills on this website to cure both hooking and slicing. In the search field at the top of this page, type in your problem, and tips will come up to help you with your problem, Come and see me at Pawleys Plantation as a hands-on lesson or 3-day school is much better than trying […]

This is an ever-present concern for many golfers. And annoyingly, that’s at least partly because there are no beneficial guidelines telling golfers where they should play from. Some courses suggest tees based on a player’s handicap, which is pretty much the standard, but it’s still not perfect. No two players are the same, after all. That wily retired golfer at your local club who doesn’t hit the ball very far but whose wicked short game helps keep him at an 8 handicap is going to have a distinct disadvantage against the 8 handicap who hits the ball a mile if they were to play off the same tees. And as for female golfers, the range might be even more tricky to pinpoint with a formula. But for now, try this chart. Provided by the good people over at Athletic Motion Golf. Now, like anything, it’s not perfect, especially for beginning golfers, but I found it provides a helpful guidepost. Essentially, you take the distance you hit your 5 iron and multiply it by 36. Every Golfer on the plant wants to hit it further – Even Bryson Dechambeau! If you are a senior golfer, you have already realized that you are slowly losing distance. But it’s not inevitable! Here are some things you can do to gain every inch of distance possible. Use a longer Tee. Tee the ball up higher and tee it slightly more forward in your stance. This will allow you to hit the ball on the upswing, giving you less backspin, a higher launch angle, and more roll when the ball hits the ground. Flare both toes out about 30 degrees each. My friend and mentor Phil Ritson used to call this the “Daffy Duck” stance. This allows a slightly more hip turn on the backswing which automatically gives you more shoulder turn. So naturally, more shoulder turn produces more power! Swing your practice swing much faster than normal! You have to get your body to feel “speed.” So make your practice swing much more aggressively than you would with any other […]

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC. We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993. We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school. Keep your weight on the front foot when playing a bunker shot is essential to the shot’s success. Several years ago, while still living in South Africa, I was practicing my bunker shots. Gary Player made the suggestion I stand on one foot to learn to pivot around my front leg. This would eliminate any unnecessary movement during my shot. Well, it helped tremendously, and I went on to become an excellent bunker player. So for those of you that struggle to keep the weight on the front foot and tend to hit your bunker shots off your back foot, here is a drill to help. Stand on one leg! Take your rear foot and place it on the toe, so there is absolutely no weight on the rear leg at all. Then, go ahead and hit the shot and finish with the weight still on the front leg. I would suggest you do this at home on your lawn first, and once it becomes comfortable, hed for the practice bunker! Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School. The correct golf equipment if you are over 70 is so critical if you still want to play competitive golf! The difference between a set custom-made for you and buying a set off the shelf is night and day! It does not cost any more, so why not do it! Here are 5 points to consider when evaluating your current equipment. Shaft Flex. Go through a club fitting and make sure you are using the correct flex. Shaft length. Again, be measured for this component. Grip Thickness. Make sure your grips are not too small or not too thick! Lie Angle. The most ignored component of club fitting. Go to a pro that has a lie board and test to see your lie angle is correct. Swing weight. The relationship between the weight of the shaft and the weight of the clubhead. Make sure this is between D2 and D4. These 5 Components can make a huge impact on your game. Please make sure they are all […]

This month’s golf tip follows up from the monthly one in March. I introduced the Power Chute and said that I would practice with this product for a month. And get back to you with the results. Well, Corona 19 came along and disrupted everything! Watch as I explain how my golf swing has definitely benefitted from working with the Power Chute. I expect even better things in the future! Biggest Benefit. The biggest benefit I personally got out of working with this was a feeling I have been looking for in my golf swing for quite a while. As an instructor, I know if I want to hit the ball further, I need to start my downswing with a strong weight shift and fast body rotation. This product gives me this and more. When I swing this five to ten times, three times a week, it gives me the feeling I have been missing for so long! Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School. This month we introduce “The PowerChute” training aid to help golfers attain clubhead speeds they only dreamed about! This product is endorsed by non-other than the great Jack Nicklaus. I have tested the “SuperSpeed Sticks” in the past. This is another product that is there for golfers to help them increase their distance. The price point is slightly cheaper at $149.00, and if you are a member of my VIP Program, you can get a further 10% discount. How it works. This product’s “chute” part provides wind resistance on the downswing (helping those golfers who hit from the top) and through impact. This allows the lower body to move first. Swinging the PowerChute gave me an amazing feel for this product. After swinging it only a few times and then picking up my regular driver, there was an immediate perception of increased clubhead speed. I will verify this by first hitting some shots in the next day or two with my launch monitor, and then after […]

Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School Improving your weight shift. One of the critical moves in the golf swing is the way you start your downswing. There has to be an efficient weight shift from the back foot to the front to create speed and create distance. The first move should be a lateral move of the lead hip forwards. Many golfers have what we call a “spin-out” because the student is under the impression that the lead hip should spin and not move forward. What causes a Spin-Out? When they first come to golf school, many of my students have the impression that at the start of the downswing, the left hip (for right-handed golfers) must immediately turn out of the way. Nothing could be further from the truth. First, there is a slight “bump” forward, moving the weight from the back foot to the front foot. Second, when your lead hip spins out, the weight stays on the back foot, and the back foot’s heel will kick out. Here is a great […]
