Control The Bottom of Your Arc. Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC. We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993. We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school. If there is one thing you absolutely, positively have to do to play consistent golf, it is Control The Bottom of Your Arc. You don’t need a golf course or a driving range. This is one of those things that you can do at home. So if you don’t have time to head out to the range, go out into your yard and practice your swing and just let the clubhead brush the grass each time you swing. If you cannot do that you are either lifting your spine range (some people call it lifting your head, but it is actually your spine angle that changes.) The second reason is the dreaded “chicken wing” or collapsing of the left arm through impact. Both of these swing will cause the bottom of the arc to be higher and you’ll miss the grass! Do this on a regular basis and you will see your ball striking improve dramatically! Thanks for watching Control The Bottom of Your Arc. Do this in your yard every day to improve your contact […]

This month’s Golf Tip is a request from Barry McIntosh from Baltimore, OH. Barry asks, Mel, can you give me one drill I can do to kick start my golf game as soon as the courses open in the Spring? Of Course, I can, Barry. I call this the nine o clock to 3 o clock drill. You can do it with any club in your bag, including your driver. Take your normal stance, and keeping the lead arm straight, swing the club back until your lead arm is parallel to the ground (the nine o cock position). Then swing through, transferring your weight to your front foot, keeping your lead arm straight and finish with your belt buckle facing through to the target and your arms extended out in front of you (the three o clock position.) Remember, do this drill slowly. If you are using an 8 or 9 iron, the ball should not go more than 50 yards in the beginning. There is one question you should ask yourself before every shot? The question is “Where do I not want to go?” Let’s say you are laying a par 3 and there is a pond short left. By asking this question before you play your shot, the obvious answer is “I need to play this shot long right.” So you add an extra club and aim for the right-hand side of the green. If you miss the shot right, you can still chip and putt for your par. If you pull it slightly you have the whole green as your margin of error. And if you pull it a lot more than you intended, you have extra carry with the longer club, and you will most probably carry the pond on the left. What are some other questions you can ask yourself before the shot? Wind Strength. Elevation? If the green is higher than you, take another extra club. If the green is lower, take one less. Lie. If you are hitting your […]

The key to gaining distance with the SuperSpeedSticks is doing the protocol regularly. In this video, I demonstrate how to do the protocol. Do this three to four times a week for about one month. Then do it once a week forever as maintenance to keep your body primed to swing fast! You can purchase the SuperSpeedSticks on my website at: https://www.ritson-sole.com/product/super-speed-golf/ The cost is $200 with free shipping! You can call 800-624-4653 for even faster service. We will have them delivered the same day! If you watch one of the related videos below called Quest for More Distance, you will see the type of results I got when I first started using the sticks. The mistake I made, was once I reached my target I stopped using the sticks. Keep up with the protocol once a week to maintain that gained distance! You’ll love using them as much as I do! Most golfers can hook and slice. The trouble is they do it when they don’t want to! Make Practice Fun in ’22! Let this be the year of going to the range and after hitting a few shots with your regular swing, start learning to draw and fade the ball at will! In the video, I describe how to hit a low draw and a high fade. Also, a low straight low shot is needed to thread yourself through some trees. By practicing these shots, you will gain the confidence to hit them on the course and at the same time have some fun on the range. If you practice with a spouse or a friend, have a friendly competition to see who can pull off shots that you call before you hit. I have done this my whole career and really enjoy my practice sessions. Remember, always have a target, so that while the ball is curving, it is curving towards the target. Make […]

The upcoming months in the Northern part of the USA will bring cold and snow. Not a great environment to practice your golf. However, Mel Sole is here to show you how you can practice throughout the winter. Work on the drills that will benefit your golf swing in the spring of next year. Winter Indoor Practice is the ideal opportunity to do something that most golfers hate to do in the summer. Practice their drills! Most golfers would much prefer to be out there playing and having fun. And although deep inside, they know that they need to practice to play well. It seems like too much hard work. What you need! Go to the rear of a local carpet store and pick up some carpet remnants to use as you practice mat—something around the 2-foot square mark. If you don’t have a whiffle or foam ball, go to a local golf store and purchase one or two. You now have all you need to work on your game. Depending on your particular ailment in your golf swing, […]

This is such a versatile training aid and not expensive at all. You can buy it on Amazon for around $30.00. Training Aids – The Impact Bag! When using this bag, attempt to hit the bag with the shaft of the club striking the top of the bag first. Do not hit the bag with the clubhead! This movement will greatly help your weight shift, body rotation, and will allow a forward shaft lean at impact. This will add quite a few yards to your irons. This movement will also transfer to your woods after practicing with your irons. Try it you’ll be glad you did! If you feel too embarrassed to take this out on the range with you, use it in your backyard, it will still do there job it was designed for! I use it in my living room as I have very high ceilings and can take a full swing. If you have high ceilings or a basement, go ahead a do that. Anything to help you gain more distance! I have covered this subject in earlier tips. However, golfers still seem to be confused about how to prevent an “over the top” move. Today, hopefully, I will make this much easier to understand. This is a drill you can do both on the driving range and at home. Get into the Tray Position for Accurate Shots! An “Over the Top” swing is when the backswing plane is lower than the downswing plane. The club is thus coming “over the top” of the backswing plane. To correct this there are two keys. Get your rear elbow into the “tray” position. This is the same position as a waiter carrying a tray. The forearm of the arm carrying the tray is perpendicular to the ground. This is the correct position of the rear arm at the top of the backswing. The elbow drops straight down to the rear hip, thus keeping the club path below the backswing allowing the club to approach the ball from the inside, and thus allowing the club to move more […]

If you ever get a chance to visit a PGA Tour event, go to the practice tee and watch the top players in the world practice. They are constantly doing drills under the watchful eye of their instructor. You will often see them exaggerate the movement, yet when they hit the ball the swing looks normal. That is because they are trying to get the body to do what it normally does not do. Exaggerating the movement speeds up the learning process. So the next time you head to the driving range to practice, make sure you have a drill to work on that you feel will improve your golf game. By doing the repetition of the drill you can ingrain that motion. It might take a few weeks, but when you head out to the course and your swing is engrained, you will play much better than you ever imagined! Good luck! Thanks for watching – Practice makes Permanent – Don’t do the Rake and Hit Method! Related Posts. Make […]
