Trumbull County peaked at 73.9 million cubic feet in Q2 2025, then Q3 and Q4 2025 figures weren't broken out in public quarterly reports. By Q1 2026 it had slipped to 50.6 million cubic feet — a 27% drop from where it started the year prior. Production comes almost entirely from a small handful of Pin Oak Energy wells. Appalachia's Next Act: How the AI Boom Is Turning Marcellus Gas Into Digital Fuel

Beneath the farms of Pennsylvania, the hollows of West Virginia, and the river valleys of eastern Ohio sits the most productive natural gas resource in the United States. The Marcellus and Utica shale formations together pump out roughly 35 billion cubic feet of gas per day — more than a third of everything the country produces. For the better part of a decade, that output has barely budged, pinned down not by a shortage of gas in the ground but by a shortage of pipe in the ground to move it.

That constraint is now cracking open, and the force breaking it loose isn't another pipeline alone. It's artificial intelligence.

The Demand Nobody Saw Coming

The hyperscale data center — the kind that powers large language models, cloud computing, and real-time AI inference — consumes electricity on a scale that strains the imagination. A single large campus can draw as much power as a mid-sized city, running continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. And with grid interconnection queues in the Mid-Atlantic now stretching beyond five years, tech companies aren't waiting for utilities. They're going directly to gas producers, negotiating long-term behind-the-meter supply agreements that bypass the traditional power grid entirely.

The numbers coming out of Appalachia are staggering. According to the Ohio River Valley Institute, EQT Corporation has already committed to supplying 665 million cubic feet per day to a planned 4.4-gigawatt power station at the Homer City Energy Campus in Pennsylvania, and 800 million cubic feet per day to a 3.6-gigawatt plant at the redeveloped former Bruce Mansfield coal facility in Shippingport — each anchoring a major data center complex. Those two contracts alone represent a volume of gas comparable to what many states consume in total.

And EQT is just getting started. As Yahoo Finance reported, CEO Toby Rice has pointed to NextEra Energy's plans for 10 gigawatts of new natural gas-fired capacity south of Pittsburgh and a 9.2-gigawatt plant being developed by SB Energy in Piketon, Ohio, as evidence that the scale of opportunity being assembled in Appalachia is transformational. In a recent analyst call, Rice described a "robust pipeline" of additional deals under negotiation, representing multiple billion cubic feet per day of potential new supply commitments.

Meanwhile, in West Virginia, earthmoving equipment is already on-site at the Monarch Compute Campus near Point Pleasant in Mason County. The Herald-Dispatch reported that EQT has been selected as gas supplier for an on-site power plant that could generate 3 gigawatts of electricity — exceeding the output of the decommissioned coal plant that previously occupied a nearby site. To connect it all, Hope Gas announced plans in March to construct a 30-mile, $250 million natural gas pipeline into northern Mason County specifically to serve the growing cluster of industrial and data center development in the area.

Why Appalachia Wins This Race

The geography is almost too convenient. As Energy Intelligence noted, the data center build-out in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region — which holds the world's largest concentration of data centers — is attracting tens of billions of dollars in investment, driven in no small part by the proximity of Marcellus and Utica gas reserves. Northern Virginia's "data center alley," which manages more digital traffic than almost anywhere on earth, sits practically on top of the pipeline systems that carry Appalachian gas eastward.

Natural Gas Intelligence has reported that industry analysts note more in-basin demand for natural gas actually reduces the need for new major trunk pipelines to haul gas out of the region — a point that makes data center supply deals uniquely attractive to producers who have spent years watching pipeline projects get canceled or delayed. EQT's Rice has been candid about that frustration, noting the company had "over 5 Bcf/d of pipeline projects canceled or opposed" in recent years.

The Pipeline Picture Is Improving Too

Even as in-basin demand surges, the long-awaited buildout of takeaway infrastructure is finally progressing. As the American Oil & Gas Reporter detailed, Boardwalk Pipelines' proposed Borealis project would carry up to 2 billion cubic feet per day of Marcellus and Utica gas out of western Appalachia all the way to LNG export terminals on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Boardwalk's chief commercial officer has called it "critical to getting incremental gas supply out of our nation's largest natural gas resource base."

RBN Energy's analysis shows the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which entered service in June 2024, added 2 Bcf/d of southward capacity, and a series of expansion projects along and near the Transco system are enabling more Appalachian gas to reach the fast-growing Southeast. Williams Companies is simultaneously developing three major gas processing plants in Ohio to supply Meta's hyperscale data center complexes in that state, according to the Ohio River Valley Institute.

The EIA currently forecasts Appalachian production growing by 0.4 Bcf/d in 2026 and 0.7 Bcf/d in 2027 — figures that analysts widely regard as conservative given the pace of data center deal announcements that have followed. World Oil's deep dive into the basin concluded that Pennsylvania is emerging as a critical national hub for AI's energy-intensive computing needs, with the broader region having witnessed "a remarkable transformation" over the past 12 months.

What It Means for Landowners and the Region

For royalty owners and mineral rights holders across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, the convergence of new pipeline capacity and surging data center demand is the most bullish setup the basin has seen in years. Higher in-basin demand tightens Appalachian basis differentials — meaning producers receive prices closer to the national benchmark — which flows through to better royalty checks and renewed incentive to drill undeveloped acreage.

As Natural Gas Intelligence reported, analysts at Siebert Williams Shank noted that EQT's long-term data center offtake agreements "are likely to tighten in-basin differentials" and "support modest volume growth in 2027 and beyond," with more agreements expected across the industry as AI and power generation demand continues to scale.

The Marcellus and Utica have survived price crashes, pipeline cancellations, and regulatory battles that would have broken lesser plays. What's unfolding now is something different — not a recovery from adversity, but a genuine demand-driven expansion that the basin's geology is uniquely equipped to answer. The molecules have always been here. The customers are finally arriving.

INCORRECT CALCULATIONS by Antero on my check detail! Anyone else experiencing this?

Hello everyone! ATTENTION to those that have production with Antero Resources! Please CHECK YOUR PAYMENT DETAIL! I noticed on my check statement from Antero last month that my “distribution interest decimal” x the “Property Value” did NOT equal the “Owner Value”. However, my “distribution interest decimal” x the "Property Volume DOES equal the “Owner Volume”. But, the “price” x the “Owner Volume” does NOT equal the “Owner Value”. After checking back through statements this is true of the last 12 wells that have been put in pay and extends back to the beginning of production! On this last check in May I was shorted by $9,742.00! The really weird thing is that on Oil on all these wells the calculation is correct. All the older wells are all correctly calculated too. Antero’s so-called “landowner hotline” is a total misnomer as they will be many days past before they respond. I had called and left a message and they responded about 18 days afterward but did NOT answer the question but seemingly thought I was asking if my owner distribution decimals had changed. I sent an email inquiry and am yet to hear back after 1 month. *** If you find the same thing is happening to you please let the forum know. This is very egregious! These check statements are so full of numbers that it is hard to catch something like this. Spreadsheet programs do not “miscalculate” unless a wrong formula has been entered. How much has Antero “skimmed” from landowners through this? If it’s big enough and widespread enough there could possibly be a class-action lawsuit in the works.

Has anyone heard any chatter with EOG owning EAP's area, the grove, Sanor and Kitzmiller seemed to have had good results. Williams pipeline had got an easement for a "new franklin" connector about a 1.5 year ago and was surveyed and nothing happened with that and Williams had bought some land for a compression station in Butler/ Hanover township but I hadn't seen anymore with that. in Knox township I've seen INR Ohio pick up a few leases, but cant imagined these are super large parcels

Received a letter today wanting me to sign a permit for a company called Dawson to do 3D seismic testing. I don't have a problem with them testing but can't see signing this permit. 1. it has no end date 2, It says I accept $10 an acre and no matter what they tear up that is all I get. Anyone else getting these?
