GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Where does the game industry go from here?

Had a lot of interesting thoughts today. Don't know how I feel about the industry right now. That's why I'm bringing up today's End of Day thought. Maybe your feelings can help me better understand mine. See you in a few, short hours.

As I stated earlier today, many people have been asking about my opinion of the Xbox One reveal earlier today. I just don't feel that it's right to dedicate an entire article to that opinion on GoNintendo. I have linked to my thoughts, which I shared on my personal Tumbler. For tonight's End of Day thought, I felt it more important to discuss the game industry in general.

There are more than a few analysts and gaming press that feel the industry is setting itself up for another crash. There's no denying that Nintendo brought the industry back from the brink of death with the NES, but are we really heading for another downward turn that really shakes the industry to its core? With the way things are going right now, I guess it could be possible.

The Wii U is on shaky ground sales-wise. The software just isn't there to support the platform as of right now. We're hearing the same third party woes that we've heard year after year with other Nintendo consoles. For Nintendo fans, this isn't anything new. For those that are trying to decide what console to pick up, the Wii U seems to be a tough sell at the moment. This can obviously be turned around, which all of us are hoping happens before the year closes out.

The PS4 has a lot of unanswered questions surrounding it. What will Sony do when it comes to used games? How much will this powerhouse cost? Will the touch pad on the controller actually be put to good use? Yes, some of these questions are minor ones that can be answered without batting an eyelash, but others could be make-or-break for some consumers.

The reaction to the Xbox One reveal has been mixed at best. Gamers seem to be very angry with the details for online connections and how games are handled. Will we really not be able to lend our friends game and have them play without a fee attached? Is the core gamer not Microsoft's focus? Do we really own the games we purchase? Again, these are things Microsoft can clear up, some of which they'll do at E3.

Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are all facing some big issues right now. It can be said that all three need to convince the public that their system is worth our time/money. Will details of PS4/Xbox One push fans in Nintendo's direction? Is it possible that gamers that found plenty to enjoy last generation just won't join in for this round? Has the industry taken players for granted in some ways, while ignoring us in others?

Conception II: Guidance of Seven Stars and Muzzle's Nightmare dated for Japan

Conception II: Guidance of Seven Stars and Muzzle’s Nightmare, which is in the running for one of the longest-named games on 3DS, has just had its release date set. The title is due to launch in Japan on August 22 for 6,729 yen. No plans for localization at this time.

Famitsu teasing multiple bits of news, including 'that news' the world has been waiting for

The following information comes from the most recent issue of Famitsu, which is teasing information for the next issue due out next week.

“Entry of a new title produced by that popular game maker!”
“New information get on titles attracting attention overseas!”
“‘That news’ the world has long-awaited announced at last!”

Nintendo has to be involved in some way with at least one of these, right? I'd count out the overseas news, but the other bits of info are quite big teases. Can't wait to see what's up!

YouTube releases statement in light of recent copyright issues with Nintendo

We know we have a lot of partners who love and want to post videos relating to games, so we wanted to share some tips to help you monetize gaming content.

As always, you should ensure that you have all the necessary rights to commercially use all content in a video before you submit it for monetization. Video game content may be monetized depending on the commercial use rights granted to you by licenses of video game publishers. Here are some tips!

● Check the video game publisher’s license agreement (Terms of Use, EULA etc). Some publishers allow you to use all video game content for commercial use and state that in the license agreement.
● Get written permission. Some publishers may allow you to monetize videos containing their game content if you reach out and ask.
● Videos showing software user interface may only be monetized if you’ve signed a contract with the publisher or paid a licensing fee.
● If you do have the appropriate license, submit your documentation to YouTube in a timely manner. If you do not have the appropriate license from a video game publisher, your videos must contain minimal use of video game or software user interface and be as informative and educational as possible - commentary must follow the live action shown step by step.
● Use your video metadata wisely! Use relevant, accurate titles, tags and descriptions for your videos.
● Make sure your dialogue is family friendly, so fans of all ages can enjoy your video.

A final reminder: Simply buying or playing a video game does not grant you the copyright or permission to monetize. To earn revenue from videos from the game, you need commercial rights.

EA now says they're making games for 'the Nintendo consoles'

"You know I will ultimately let consumers vote on PS vs. Xbox. You know I think Nintendo's business was more of an extension of their last console. We are building titles for the Nintendo consoles, but not anywhere near as many as we are for PS or Xbox. You know, what I think the consumer will find is a lot more powerful gameplay with the new boxes that are coming out, and a lot of excitement, but it will remain to be seen as to the services associated with those how the consumers decide which direction they want to go." - EA's chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen

Natsume to showcase digital titles at E3

Coming from a Natsume PR...

“We’re excited to show the media the fruit of the past year’s promise to provide more digital titles at next month’s E3 Expo.”

I think the digital side of things really suits Natsume well. They make enough cash off of their franchises, but they aren't huge blockbusters. It think saving money on packaged retail and going digital makes perfect sense for them.
