I know it's been a while since we've posted videos of any kind on our YouTube channel, but fear not, new videos are here! No, it is not the conclusion to the Top Ten Worst Consoles of All Time. That will come in due time, we promise. These new videos are reviews, and there is going to be a lot of them, however you won't see them posted on the G&DB YouTube channel. The short story is thanks to the guys at Classic L337 and Hauppauge Computer Works.

I've been graciously bestowed with a magical gift that records console game play directly on my PC. The Hauppauge Colossus capture card is a really slick device that records in HD via component and HDMI inputs and spits out beautiful 720p and 1080i movies. This article may sound like a commercial for the device and I assure you it is not.

This peripheral is not without fault, but the complete package is a bundle of quality hardware and software that I can highly recommend to anyone. The good news for you guys is, I can now post video reviews and game play from console games on the Classic L337 YouTube channel. Scott and Tony are great guys and I am really excited to be included in the Classic L337 review team. If it wasn't for their awesomeness I would not be able to record these videos in the first place.

You can see below that I've posted a review of the Hauppauge Colossus Capture Card. Is there some irony in recording a video review of the device I will use to record video reviews? Don't think to hard about it, I'm not sure that use of irony is correct. Just check the video below and look for more new videos soon that will be posted on our site.

The Gooch Lives!

Hey guys, just wanted to remind everyone that we are not dead. If you have been following our friends (all those pretty links on the lower right side of the page) you know exactly where we've been. However, for those of you who may not have heard we've been on a massive break up until lately.

We have not stopped podcasting, and despite popular belief we did not take a hiatus to finish our Top Ten Worst Console of All Time video series. The Dooshebag and myself have been very busy with our personal lives during the last few months, and that is honestly why we've been playing hooky. The good news is that things are heating back up again. I've been making a few podcast appearances including being on the latest episode of Classic L337, which features an interview with Alex Howell from EA, and I recently wrote an article (actually it was more of a rant) over on Jerry Terrifying's website.

Speaking of The Dooshebag he recently stopped over and we played through the fourth episode of Telltales' Back to the Future: The Game, so look forward to a review/impressions when we record our next podcast. No official recording date has been set, but expect one to show up on the site in the next few weeks. I'm sorry it's taken so long for a formal update on our website, but like I said our personal lives kicked into overtime, and that stuff always takes precedence over all else. Hopefully our much appricated fans have not forsaken us and if you need a good Gooch fix (that felt dirty just to say) then please check out the links below, and while your there check out other great content on those sites.

As a quick last minute note there is a new link on the lower right side of our website (remember I called them "pretty links" earlier). Glitched-Out is up and and running in full force. It is a one stop shop for gamers to enjoy a variety of content from several video game enthusiasts including Critical Failure, Jerry Terrifying, Classic L337, The Half Blind Gamer, and many more. It's honestly the best time you can have on the internet just shy of looking up nipple slips on Google images.

Console Generations

Do you see that picture? The one right above these words...yeah, that's a lot of games. Why would any one person need so many games? I've not beaten all of them, and there are some I've yet to even play. I wouldn't call myself a “hardcore collector,” but in recent years I've ceased to trade or sell my games and consoles. Why did I do this? Because at some point I realized they actually have a value beyond the all mighty dollar.

Some of my gaming memories are associated with the game itself, while others are related to the events in my life when playing that game. For example, when I see The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, I'm reminded of the time shortly after my son was born. After the baths, diaper changes, and impromptu late night feedings, there was game time. Several times Riddick was paused while I mixed formula and rocked my son back to sleep.

New games are released every day, and with each game comes the potential for new memories. Recently I helped my son earn a particularly difficult star in Mario Galaxy 2. Twenty years from now if Mario Galaxy 2 is re-released on the virtual-virtual console on our PS Wii60 HD 2, we'll be reminded of playing the game together and giving each other numerous high fives.

The original Xbox and Gamecube I played when my son was first born are long gone, but wouldn't it be great if I could have passed them on to him. The console he drooled on as an infant, sat on a shelf in the room where he took his first steps, and spoke his first words. The consoles may be antiquated technology and the games are never as good as we remember them, but like any item from the past they hold memories and have stories to tell.

She's known as the "Witch of the Wilds" and "Asha'bellanar," but she's also been known as "mother" to many girls over the years.

She's malicious, immortal, and a straight up bitch, but despite it all Flemeth is a mom. Stolen daughters, and evil intentions aside, at the very least, she deserves a card on Mother's Day. The Witch of the Wilds surely isn't the worst parent in history, Morrigan turned out alright...for the most part.

Sure the box art is terrible, but it’s a pinnacle of the sidescroller beat’em up. This game introduced numerous branching paths, RPG leveling mechanics, and numerous endings to a genre whose previous design docs only had three bullet points: kill stuff, walk right, and kill more stuff.

While few gamers have played it, countless developers were inspired by Guardian Heroes. Luckily this fall more and more gamers will be able to play this Sega Saturn classic when it lands on XBLA this fall. DB and I have always waxed poetic about Guardian Heroes, imploring fellow gamers to pick up a copy if at all possible. Sadly, a copy of Treasure’s beat’em up opus isn’t easy to come by. Most copies on EBay reach buyouts of 50 dollars and up. When you factor in the cost of a Sega Saturn, extra controllers, and a multi-tap peripheral the cost of this gaming experience goes up significantly.

Luckily for me, DB snatched a copy a few years ago and in between grad courses and rent payments, we’ve managed to relive a small piece of our youth. Guardian Heroes remains a fantastic game, a hallmark for the genre, but despite all the accolades, it’s still over a decade old. The original Saturn game looks a little rough around the edges, and the frame rate takes big dips during intense fights.

The prospect of having a version of Guardian Heroes running on modern hardware, with enhanced visuals and consistent performance is very exciting. When you toss in the new modes, and multiplayer that doesn't require everyone staring at the same screen, I’m sold. Although, there are several fans who aren't as optamistic. Several gamers have complained about the XBLA version using enchanced graphical bells and whistles.
I'm not going to nitpick about the sprites not being perfectly scaled. The original Saturn sprites were good in their time, but that was in 1996. Treasure has announced the graphical filter can be turned off, so the condescending purists can stop bitching. Also,...they can suck it.

I suppose the point of this rant is to vent about those purists who complain when a remake isn't 100% faithful to the original game. Seriously, if you want to play the original game in all its glory, buy the original game and play it on a television from 1996 in your mom's basement. I don't believe every game needs a shiny new re-release, but some games can truly benifit from a tune-up and a fresh coat of paint. Personally I can't wait to experience a remasterd version of Guardian Heroes with updated visuals and online support.

If anyone wants to comment below, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this increasingly popular trend of re-releasing classic games via digital distribution.

Random Encounter!!

In the initial days of this blog it was to be an outlet where we could type whatever we wanted. This was before the podcasts and was a vent outside of the YouTube channel. As time passed the blog became stagnant, with few updates. Actually, I believe there may have been a total of six posts before we overhauled it to the site it is today. Our blog now serves as the one-stop-shop for all things G&DB, but we no longer post random bits like we did when the blog was created.

The paragraph above is the first in a return to the original format of the blog. No one needs to panic; the podcast and occasional written reviews aren't going anywhere. When an idea, creative spark, or rant comes upon us and we have the time, the site will contain random stuff like this. These will usually be related to video games, but this is a random blurb about, well…writing random blurbs.

This sudden burst of writing may be related to the fact I’m stuck at my day job watching files move from one server to another. Who am I kidding, this is absolutely due to my ass being firmly seated at my desk for what feels link an eternity. However, when you have an opportunity you must seize it, and I’ve been meaning to make more content for the website.

My files are nearly transferred, and I’m in dire need of microwaveable sustenance. Also, I’ve made my point, and started what will assuredly be a fun string of random posts in between podcasts and reviews. What will I write about next? Hell if I know, but that’s why I enjoy it.

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX Review

The chore mechanics of Pac-Man are simple: eat pellets, and avoid ghosts. There is no way out of the maze, and on occasion a power pellet appears, allowing you to turn the tables on your ethereal pursuers for a limited time. When you eventually run out of lives (or quarters) then, it’s game over and your score is all that remains.

Thankfully when Pac-Man Championship edition released in 2006 it changed the gameplay little, turned up the speed, and focused on earning huge scores within 5-10 minute game sessions. The slight changes made Pac-Man feel new again and the score chase was reignited.

When Pac-Man Championship Edition DX was announced I wondered how it would be possible for Namco Bandai to reinvigorate the franchise yet again. Well, Namco Bandai has done it again, and this time they have made Pac-Man more addicting than it has ever been.

Essentially the gameplay is the same as it always has been with the addition of combos, bombs, and “bullet-time.” Admittedly these changes sound like Pac- blasphemy, but believe me when I tell you that they work very well.

On the surface the game appears to be the same as its predecessor, although shortly into a game you will notice the ghosts are no longer floating randomly throughout the maze, they are now napping quietly. When you pass by these sleeping apparitions they will wake up and take chase. As you eat pellets fruit appears, when you eat the fruit more ghosts and pellets appear, and the cycle continues. Before long there will be a train of ghosts behind you waiting to be eaten the moment a power pellet appears. The more ghosts you devour in quick succession the greater the combo and higher your score will become. Eating 30 or more ghosts in a row has to be one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever felt in any videogame.

I mentioned that our yellow buddy now has bombs and what can only be described as a “spider-sense.” This “bullet-time” like effect occurs anytime that Pac-Man is nearing contact with a ghost and faces losing a life. At those moments the game will slow the game speed dramatically as the camera zooms in. This combined with the fact the player now has bombs that can be used anytime you need to blast all ghosts back to the center of the maze, might make Pac-Man Championship Edition DX sound like a game with no challenge. These new tools may make the base game easier to the casual player, but keep in mind that with each death the game’s speed lowers, ultimately translating to lower high scores. The key to a achieving the top of the leader boards is keeping the game speed high, refraining from bombs, and your deaths to a minimum.

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX is no slouch on variety. The game mixes things up by including several types of mazes, each with their own particular patterns, and nuisances. Once a maze type is chosen you are asked to select between several game types with various time limits and objectives. I guess what I’m trying to say here is that you are not short on options. Even further than customizing your gameplay experience, you can mix and match the aesthetics of the characters and mazes (i.e. If you prefer the mazes of Pacmania and the original character models then you can do that).

Namco Bandai understands that a highly polished arcade experience needs a soundtrack of equal quality to truly bring a player back to the score chasing glory days of the arcades in our youth. The music for Pac-Man Championship Edition DX has to be one of the best in the business. It has been a long while since I remained on a menu select screen just to hear the accompanying music, and yes it is that good. The entire soundtrack is a joyful, electric, pop, eargasm inducing joyride that somehow entrances and energizes players all at the same time.

When I think of the games that have truly changed the industry, I assemble a rather short list. Games like Pong, Super Mario Brothers, Ultima, Quake, and a handful of other prestigious titles are all present. However, there is one circular, yellow, pellet-chomping married man who is often over looked. Namco Bandai has found a way to make this old franchise feel new again, and yet stayed humbly rooted in what defined it as Pac-Man.
