(More customer reviews)What a brilliant film. It's not overly clever. It's a touch formulaic. It's even a bit silly in places (Bette Midler will NEVER pass as a man by penciling on a moustache and wearing trousers), and the fashion will make you wince.
There is something about this comedy that makes me giggle. I don't know why - is it the way Midler and Long ham it up? Is it the silly girl bonding thing? Is it the crap but hilarious jokes? The bit where Long is shot, even though it's corny, still makes me think 'Ahh...she did it' (You'll know what I mean when you watch the movie).
All in all, you'll be hard pushed to find such a silly yet brilliant film. I heartily recommend watching it, and even buying the video (if it ever becomes available).

(More customer reviews)This movie may not be perfect in all aspects, but it is full of sweet and heart-breaking moments that keep you rooting for its many underdogs all the way--even the harsh and jaded main character, Arlen. The chemistry between the actors is flawless, without exception. The ending is satisfying in that it doesn't feel the need to tie up all the loose ends and it leaves you wanting more. I have heard it compared to As Good as it Gets, but I prefer this version. While it lacks the glossy main stream production qualities of AGAIG, it makes up for it in its every day heroes that are much more relatable.

(More customer reviews)This Peanuts DVD includes three love-related specials. The title feature, "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" is the first of the three cartoons on the disc. This special aired on television in 1975 and was nominated for an Emmy. Mostly based around Schultz's original strips, the main story follows Charlie Brown as he survives Valentine's Day. The cartoon begins with Snoopy dancing around as cupid and trying to hit Charlie Brown and missing every single time. Charlie Brown faithfully checks his mailbox hoping to get a Valentine and brings a briefcase to school to carry home all the cards he plans to receive. Meanwhile, Linus has a crush on his teacher and buys her an expensive box of chocolates as a gift that Sally believes is for her.
The second special on the disc is "You're in Love, Charlie Brown". The school year is quickly approaching the end of the year and Charlie Brown finds himself head over heals in love with the cute little red-haired girl in his class. He fights to overcome his shyness to speak with the girl before the school year ends because after that, he won't be able to see her until the fall.
The third and final special on the DVD is "It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown". This time it's October and the school is gearing up for the big homecoming game and dance. During the homecoming parade, Charlie Brown is informed by Linus that he's going to be the queen's escort at the dance and he will have to kiss her on the cheek. The Queen is none other than the little red-haired girl and Charlie Brown finds himself more nervous than he's ever been before. Of course, before the homecoming dance there's the big homecoming football game.
In addition to a few trailers, BE MY VALENTINE, CHARLIE BROWN also includes a featurette documentary, "Unlucky in Love: An Unrequited Love Story." I really enjoyed this documentary. It includes interviews with Jean Schulz, Charles' widow; his son Craig; Stephan Pastis the creator of "Pearls Before Swine", and several others. They talk about the reoccurring theme of unrequited love that appears in "Peanuts", who the real little red-haired girl was, and why "Peanuts" remains relevant.
BE MY VALENTINE, CHARLIE BROWN is a must-own DVD for any "Peanuts" fan.

(More customer reviews)The film starts off being narrated by Tom (Fab Filippo), as we are first introduced to him on Day 24, smoking weed in a parkade to pass the time. We soon learn that in his meaningless cubicle Dilbert job, he is involved in a contest with 3 other employees to see who can stay indoors the longest in a downtown network of office buildings, shopping malls, food courts, apartments, and skywalks. The one who stays in the longest, will win a months salary.
The name of this place is not mentioned in the film, but for those who can recognize it, it is Calgary's downtown network. I guess due to it's size and huge facilities that it is attached to, you could practically spend the entire time never having to step outside, going from work to home and everything you need in between. Heck doesn't sound that far fetched, I even heard one person can spend their entire life in Chicago's Sears Tower and have everything they need. Needless to say the bet starts to take its toll on the characters sanity, and our lead hero Tom starts wondering what he is to make of his career and spiritual life, as his mind is slowly falling out of his body.
This movie was a lot of fun for me. I totally identified with Tom, who is trying to find something else meaningful in life, and work-hell being the catharsis for it. The movie is funny, and even has 3 particular gut busting scenes (which I won't give away). It's easy to see why Tom is so disenchanted, the place he works at is dull and boring, a firm named what else (Mather, Mather & Mather) headed by an octogenarian. We run into his other co-workers like Sandra who is in on the bet and at wits end. She is under her supervisor orders to follow Mr. Mather around the network cause he's a serious kleptomaniac (he goes around to all the stores and shoplifts like crazy!). For Tom to pass the time, he starts playing mind games on Sandra telling her the air is constantly being recycled and filthy, and it feels stuffy. As a result we see Sandra running around the network constantly gasping for air, loosing her mind, and then even resorting to ripping out perfume inserts in a book store and sniffing them like a drug addict. Tom's other problems are 2 cubicle mates, Brad (Don McKellar, not in on the bet) a long standing employee who's been around TOO long and gone nowhere a ticking time bomb waiting to go off (everyone calls him Sadly Bradley), and Curt (who is in on the bet) a cocky arrogant, turtle neck wearing thinks he's cool but is not type of guy, who only refers to Tom by calling him `Dinkus'. Fun fun fun... who wouldn't be loosing their mind in a place like this?
This movie reminded me a lot of another film called Office Space, where the characters are similar but different. It's different cause the film has some neat editing scenes, and goes into some fun philosophical points as Tom describes his non-existence while swimming around the downtown area. This makes the film more reflective and poignant, where Office Space is more goofy and fun. Also while Office Space has more cartoonish like characters, these characters are a little more complicated. But the similarities are the same in that the characters are both trying to figure out some type of meaning in their life in their HORRIBLE MEANINGLESS jobs. One thing though about both those great films is the characters are all VERY real.
This is just a well done, good unique film. It is not BRILLIANT, or REVOLUTIONARY, but the story is memorable, and the film should definitely be seen by more audiences. Due to the nature of Canadian films being distributed, the chances that you may see this film are probably small and that's a shame cause it deserves a bigger audience. But now...
It's on DVD!!

Tom, Sandra, Randy, and Curt have all staked a month’s salary on a bet to see who can stay indoors the longest. It helps that they live and work in a downtown area where virtually all of the buildings are connected by a maze of glassed-in bridges. Why, with all the office towers, shopping malls, and apartment buildings joined, they could stay inside until they retire! That is, if it wasn’t driving them all slightly crazy. Come lunchtime, things start getting really strange, but, by the time it’s over, everyone’s looking at life a little differently.

You also love all the characters. Monica Potter is wonderful and proves she can do more than stand next to Robin Williams and Nic Cage and look pretty. Oh she looks beautiful here, but she is also charming, witty, and lovable. The three guys are funny and well acted. The shrink is terrific. This might be a chick flick, but I'm one guy who loved this movie. Don't waste your time with a big studio comedy, go rent this tonight.

(More customer reviews)Generator Gawl has all the makings of a great series. It is a perfect blend of comedy, drama, romence, action, and intrigue. Most of all though you began to care more and more about the characters involved. In Generator Gawl Vol. 3 Secrets and Lies, the viewer learns more and more about Gawl and his friends, plus there is some great forshadowing. Overall this volume got me looking forward to the fourth and finall Generator Gawl, Out of Time. My only complaint is if your an avid animation fan you need to buy the DVD because the diffenrence between the dubbed version and subtitle version is vast. Instead of changing a line here and there, the people who did the dubbed version pretty much changed all the dialogue. One can watch both the dubbed and the subtitle and feel like its totally 2 diffent movies.

Does Humor Belong in Music? Frank Zappa Live Review

(More customer reviews)I'm happy that Zappa stuff is finally starting to get to DVD but disappointed by this one. Not only do they decide to put less than an hour of music from a "very long" show but then they cut into some of the songs and only have "snippets" of some of them. The cuts are done by going to two very short Zappa interview segments that would have been fabulous if presented in their entirety as bonus materials.
Don't the video masters of this show exist? Zappa was pretty good at saving things. Why not put the whole show on DVD or at least more than this sampling? My guess is that this video was meant, at the time, to be a "teaser" to get newer fans interested in Zappa's more accessible stuff and to promote the, very great, skills of his later live bands. Perhaps this is why that this is one of the first releases to DVD. If so, I was wrong to spend the money on it as I am a long LONG time fan of Zappa's who finds most of this material unchallenging and of limited interest.
It *is* great to see the band making the music and seeing Zappa being "into it" that night. I only got to attend one Zappa concert. It was the Zappa/Beefheart tour when it stopped in Cincinnati around 1976 (or about). He was just "phoning it in" that night and only played for 50 minutes.
The recording and video is well done for the time and the material is picked from songs that are MUCH better to see/hear performed live than to only listen to on CD. There is some good Zappa music on this however a main point that Zappa seems to want to get across is "musical chops are good" and he proves his point by having a number of tunes that have no real value other than the impressive skill that his band shows in performing them.

While I'll admit the first few episodes weren't the show's strongest, the second season ramps up and culminates in a more mature - and hilarious - fashion than even its stellar inaugural season.

beat the bad rich villain. It involves horse stealing,
a very fast female jockey and a fellow who did time for
beating up the bad guy. The acting is casual and good
and the ranch setting is pretty near real.
The small ranchers as usual are losing it all...
historically, it very hard to make a small spread to
support a family. In the end the good guy gets his girl
and the bad guy gets the shaft:
what more could we ask for in a western?

(More customer reviews)There' no argument that this is one of the funniest series of all time, but season 8 was slightly ruined by what is one of the worst finales ever. It seems to have been written by people who've never watched the show and it's a completely unrealistic end to these characters (there's no way Will and Grace would stop talking to each other for so many years).
Still, for a fan of the series and especially for those with the other seasons on DVD, this is a must-get. It has a few funny episodes (although this is probably the weakest season of all), and the bloopers are always a good addition to the set.

In this film the blushing bride doesn't get her happy fairytale ending while her lifelong friends watch her in bliss; so happy. No. Instead the story takes a more interesting turn where karma kicks in like its supposed to. This movie is absolutely hysterical and very entertaining to watch. It also has some sweet romances woven into the storyline that are quite enjoyable to watch blossom. This is a wonderfully funny and sweet movie that I have found myself watching over and over again. Tracey Ullman has had her finger on the pulse of America for decades now. It's wonderful to have her back in a weekly show!
"State"'s celebrity impersonations are incredible! Tracey Ullman's Andy Rooney impersonation, as well as Renee Zellweger, have now become iconic. The Renee sketch is one that you never want to end!
"State of the Union" is not a remake, or a continuation of "Tracey Takes On", or "The Tracey Ullman Show". It's a fresh format, still allowing Ullman to show off all of her many talents.
"State of the Union" wins where "Little Britain: USA" massively failed. Tracey understands America. She's lived here for over 20 years. She knows its people inside and out.
The look of the series and the theme music is enchanting. Troy Miller does a great job as director. Troy Miller, is producer of, "Flight of the Concords".
I have to disagree with the comment about the quality of the DVD. I had no problems playing it, and it's features are good. The bloopers are funny, the deleted bits are enjoyable.

(More customer reviews)I've seen this in England, and I can faithfully vouch for the fact that yes, the first two volumes of Mervyn Peake's masterpiece trilogy have finally been accorded their due on the screen. I should start by warning fans of the novels that the Gormenghast realized here is much prettier than you would expect; perhaps the film's producers were worried that a vision of the giant castle and its environs as decayed and yellowed as Peake imagined might be too offputting to anyone but fans of the novels? As a result, Gormenghast is slightly too pretty at times to convey the sense of Gothic dissolution Peake intended: even the campsite of the carvers seems gussied up in pretty green decor. And in the central role of Steerpike Jonathan Rhys-Meyers looks smashing and works hard, but fails to turn in the truly bravura performance the part requires (in part because he lacks tremendous physical presence, despite his sneering beauty).
On the other hand, so much is given to us in this version that it would be churlish to complain. Celia Imrie steals the show as the brutally abstract and terrifyingly towering Countess of Groan: she has both the presence and the ability to play the role. The great Fiona Shaw transforms herself exactly into Peake's sketches of Irma Prunesquallor, and Zoe Wanamaker and Lynsey Baxter do something very original and believable as Titus's half-witted and murderous aunts. The special effects are at times jawdropping, and at times the director allows for the off-kilter camera angles--and yes, even the Gothic atmnosphere otherwise missing--that brings you back to Peake's original vision (the library sequence is particularly smashing). This is the kind of adaptation that, even with its few flaws, one would never have dared hope to have seen.

(More customer reviews)Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night sits up on the same pedestal as Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing. Not a suprise, either, given that both films came out of Branagh's Renaissance Films. Reset in the Victorian era, Nunn maintains the delicate balance of comedy and drama (much like Much Ado), carried out in one amazing cast. Nunn does a wonderful job of keeping most of Shakespeare's comedy in-tact, editing only when neccessary to appease a film audience (most noticeable in Viola's famous "I left no ring with her" monologue being broken up throughout the film).
No member disappoints and each one excels in their own right. Helena Bonham Carter, queen of period films, plays an astounding Olivia with excellent timing. Imogen Stubbs, whom I've only seen play a small role in Sense and Sensibility, exceeds all expectations set for her in the role of Viola. And Ben Kingsley (yes, Ghandi), reminds us of his Royal Shakespeare Company roots as a multi-dimensional Feste.
The score, unhappily available on CD (albeit Kingley's "The Wind and the Rain" is available on the CD collection "If Music Be the Food of Love: Shakespeare at the Movies"), is breathtaking and well-done, particularly for a play that includes so much music as a stage performance. It corrolates perfectly with the lush settings (often involving romantic sea-scapes and Victorian manor houses) and costumes.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment about this film is that it's not available on DVD. However, it alone is reason enough for me to keep my VCR.

(More customer reviews)This is a review of the DVD set itself, as I assuming most of you already know the story and have possibly seen the TV show. This is a digitally remastered DVD with a stereo soundtrack and clear crisp visuals.
It's actually a two DVD set. The TV series, which is on the first DVD, is as near to a flawless reproduction as is currently possible. Watch it with the lights off to enjoy all the visuals and matte painting special effects that were available in 1981 with a shoestring budget. Additionally, this is a "must buy" just for the second DVD alone. Outtakes and deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, The Making of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, BBC Omnibus Tribute to Douglas Adams, and much more.
BBC Video has stepped up and hit a homerun with this DVD set. Be sure to watch it with and recommend it to your friends. "Share and enjoy!"

This movie is based around Dennis a 5 and a half year old boy who gets into a lot of trouble because of his curiosity. He lives next to the old Mr. Wilson who often is the recipient of Dennis's curiosity. Meanwhile a crook comes through town and starts robbing house's.
Overall this is a classic film that never really get old and has 93 minutes of great entertainment. This movie definitely deserves 5 stars.

(More customer reviews)Well, the second season of "Desperate Housewives" has finally come to an end. Season two for the most part was a pretty good one, though not quite as good as season one. While the writing and acting was still first-rate, there were a few things about season two that didn't work.
The good things about the second season of this terrific ABC series were many of the same things that made this show's first season so good: great acting by its stars. The actress I thought who came off best in season two was Eva Longoria, who plays the beautiful and sexy Gabrielle. Of the show's four leading ladies, Longoria gave by far the funniest performances throughout the season (her catfight scene with that nun midway through the season was uproarious). Marcia Cross gave the show's most powerful performances as Bree, the housewive who's an obsessive perfectionist. Felicity Huffman (Lynette) and Teri Hatcher (Susan) were both terrific as usual. And Nicolette Sheridan was delicious as Edie, the Wisteria Lane tramp. Main storylines that played out through season two include: Gaby and Carlos trying to have a baby in every possible way; Lynette going back to work; Bree battling not only alcoholism but also her brat son Andrew; Susan breaking up with Mike, then finding a potential romantic interest with a doctor; and Edie finding romance with Susan's ex-husband Karl.
But there were a few setbacks. The one asset that didn't really work on the second season of "Desperate Housewives" was the big mystery storyline involving Wisteria Lane's newest members: the Applewhites (introduced at the end of season one). This storyline wasn't even close to matching the greatness of the big mystery storyline of season one (the suicide of Mary Alice Young), and it wasted the talents of Alfre Woodard, who portrayed Betty Applewhite. It seemed that the writers couldn't make up their minds at where to go with this story, and in the process Woodard wasn't given much to do in the role. That's a shame, because Woodard is a great actress and deserved better here. This storyline was thankfully finished off in the season two finale, and it appears that Woodard will not be back for season three. One good thing came out of this storyline: a surprise twist that I didn't see coming.
Another thing I didn't see coming was the shocking ending to the season finale, which has turned out to be the big cliffhanger that will lead into season three. It will be interesting to see what ends up happening when "Desperate Housewives" comes back on the air for season three.
Critics loved season one; but hated season two. Same thing with the Emmy voters. After receiving 15 Emmy nominations for its freshman season, "Desperate Housewives" only got 7 nods for season two. Plenty of omissions this time: no nomination for Best Comedy Series, and no nominations for its leading ladies (Marcia Cross was unfairly snubbed). The only major nomination it got was for Alfre Woodard as Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, which (in my opinion) makes no sense at all. The only reason why Woodard is nominated is because Emmy voters love her. She is a past winner for some very good work that's she's done (the HBO movie Miss Evers' Boys and a guest appearence in the pilot to NBC's L.A. Law) and she's received other nominations for her other various roles. But to receive a nomination for a role in which we saw her not given a whole lot to do just proves at how boneheaded the Emmy voters can be sometimes (which is quite often). How Woodard can get a nomination for a wasted performance and Cross fails to get nominated for doing the strongest acting on the show in season two is a mystery that I don't think anyone on Wisteria Lane would be able to figure out.

The kid in question acts more like a moron than someone with a purpose in his visit to Buenos Aires - and it's not necesarily to meet Sabrina Love, the porn star he won a night of "fun" with. As with the typical Argentine movie, the inevitable old Italian man is there, this time, as unexplicably the husband of Sabrina Love, who is the producer of her show, and is of the jealous type, but has money. The boy gets to mee SL, and have a night of fun with her. he also gets to know her on a deeper level, but cannot, or will not grow up. The movie gets even more irritating as he fails to share with his city older brother, the real news about their parents. The film had a promising start, but as with the rest of Argentina, it was all a terrible waste.

(More customer reviews)Miguel Aceves Mejia and Lola Flores make an incongruous pair in this film that essentially has no plot, other than situations that facilitate a song and a dance to take place. Gervasio (Fernando Soto) loves Rosita (Carmen Flores) who loves Don Miguel (Miguel Aceves Mejia) who loves Dolores (Lola Flores), and Dolores isn't sure who she loves until the last song has been sung. Directed by Miguel Morayta, it has lovely Victor Herrera cinematography of Don Miguel's huge ranch, and there is a scene in a palenque that the squeamish should be warned has a cockfight between song numbers. The film is in quite good condition despite its age (some of the audio is a little deteriorated, but doesn't affect the enjoyment of it) and no subtitles are available.
Miguel Aceves Mejia was one of the great interpreters of ranchera music and was renown for his fabulous falsetto, and though he was never a great actor or riveting screen presence like some of his other singer/actor contemporaries, he made over fifty films in his long career, and passed on to his heavenly reward nine days before his 91st birthday in 2006. Lola Flores gets top billing in this film, and was an international superstar in the 1950's, traveling the world with her flamenco group, and dazzling her audiences with her fiery personality, flashing eyes, and throaty voice (I was fortunate to see her perform in Buenos Aires, and years later in New York City). Her presence is almost too big to be held in by the screen, and in contrast to Mejia, she overpowers the film medium. "Limosna de Amor" is riveting. 100% pure gypsy fire, the way flamenco used to be, not the refined stuff of today, and it's worth the price of the film.
The wonderful music of these two legendary stars is what this film is about, and the song list is:

(More customer reviews)Martin Mc Donagh's "In Bruges" proves at least one thing once and for all: Colin Farrell is a thoughtful, emotionally open, soon to do very great things on the screen, actor...something that anyone who has seen "Tigerland" and "Home at the End of the World" already knows despite evidence to the contrary: "S.W.A.T," "Alexander," "Miami Vice," etc. etc.
'If I'd grown up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me. But I didn't, so it doesn't" says Ray (Farrell) to his fellow hit man, Ken (burly Brendan Gleeson): both sent to Bruges, Belgium to cool off after a bloody hit that unfortunately went woefully wrong.
This is McDonagh's first film as Director/Writer and it is evident that he has a great eye for detail both in the sparkling, smart-*ss dialogue as well as with the stunning visual vocabulary of movies. Bruges is a beautiful city: ancient, redolent of the many lives lived there with its cobblestone streets, masonry buildings and outdoor plazas. As such, staid, old lady of Belgium Bruges stands in vivid contrast to the Irish duo of middle-aged, seen-it-all, supposedly Gay, interested in the sights and history of the city Ken and the emotionally over-wrought, painfully sensitive Ray: nervous, anxious, wanting to party, sporadically breaking out in sobs...literally an open emotional wound desperate for succor, blatantly remorseful, seeking redemption in all the wrong places.
"In Bruges" roils over with goofy, silly dialogue (mostly spoken by Farrell who proves very adept at delivering it in droll, wry, ironic style) and profanity, violent bursts of gunfire, and jokes at the expense of dwarfs and Americans. Screenwriter McDonagh steers his odd couple Irishmen through a series of strange/odd situations in which questions of honor, friendship and mortality are mulled. The older Gleeson also proves to be the grounded one: good at what he does (that is kill people) and able, by his very presence to calm Ray down.
Ralph Fiennes is also on hand here and plays Ray and Ken's boss, a mean-spirited bloke who talks in Michael Caine-Cockney cadences and arrives in Bruges to make sure that a hit, assigned to Ken is carried out without fail.
"In Bruges" shares many of the surface traits of such films as Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" but, though great as "Pulp Fiction" is, it doesn't have the heart and soul of Mc Donagh's "In Bruges": a film that satisfies the thriller/action genes of us all but also digs very deep below and reveals the true natures of its very conflicted, ultimately very human characters.
