Ocse: Coldiretti, contro disoccupazione 200mila giovani in campagna. Oltre 200mila giovani hanno scelto di non arrendersi alla disoccupazione e di lavorare in campagna dove è giovane addirittura un lavoratore dipendente su quattro. E’ quanto afferma la Coldiretti in riferimento ai dati Ocse sulla disoccupazione giovanile al 35,9 per cento in Italia. Per molti giovani lavorare nei campi significa – sottolinea la Coldiretti – prendere contatto con il mondo del lavoro in un momento di crisi dove è difficile trovare alternative occupazionali. L’estate coincide – continua la Coldiretti – con il periodo di maggior

impiego di lavoro nelle campagne dove si svolgono le attività di raccolta di verdura e frutta come ciliegie, albicocche o pesche fino alla vendemmia che si concentra nel mese di settembre. A far crescere la presenza di giovani in campagna è stata anche la possibilità di utilizzare i voucher, dal primo giugno per i giovani dai 16 ai 25 anni di età regolarmente iscritti ad un ciclo di studi. Lo strumento dei voucher – ricorda la Coldiretti – è stato introdotto per la prima volta proprio in occasione della vendemmia 2008 (agosto) e poi esteso ad altre figure di lavoratori ed altre attività, anche se i maggiori utilizzatori restano i lavoratori agricoli. Delle opportunità di lavoro offerte dal settore agricolo si parlerà giovedì 17 maggio 2012 con inizio alle ore 9,30 all’Auditorium Parco della Musica di Roma dove si svolgerà l’Assemblea di Coldiretti Giovani Impresa dal titolo: “Giovani per l’Italia” con oltre duemila giovani agricoltori provenienti da tutte le Regioni. Un appuntamento che per dimensioni, caratteristiche ed età dei partecipanti (tutti under 30) è un momento storico negli anni della crisi e della disoccupazione giovanile. The experience of ‘mental silence’ is linked with better health outcomes and greater wellbeing according to a University of Sydney study. The area of greatest difference was in mental health, where long-term meditators, with a minimum of two years of regular practice, were more than 10 percent better off than the general population. “We found that the health and wellbeing profile of people who had meditated for at least two years was significantly higher in the majority of health and wellbeing categories when compared to the Australian population,” said Dr Ramesh Manocha, Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Psychiatry,Sydney Medical School, who led the research. He worked with Professor Deborah Black and Dr Leigh Wilson from the Faculty of Health Sciences. “Most markedly there was a robust

relationship between the frequency of experiencing mental silence and better mental health. This definition is based on it being the form of meditation practised for centuries.” The national study is a world-first health quality-of-life survey of long-term meditators. It used the same measurement instruments as the one used by the federal government’s National Health and Wellbeing Survey. More than 350 people from across Australia who have meditated for at least two years were assessed for the national study which has been published in the journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. “We focused on the definition of meditation as mental silence and surveyed practitioners of Sahaja Yoga meditation who practise a form of meditation aimed at achieving this state rather than relaxation or mindfulness methods that are usually the focus of other forms,” Dr Manocha said. The meditators were asked how often they experienced ‘mental silence’ for more than a few minutes at any one time. Fifty-two percent of respondents said that they experienced mental silence “several times per day or more” while 32 percent were experiencing it “once or twice per day”.”Our analysis showed very little relationship at all between how often the person who meditated physically sat down to meditate and mental health scores. However the relationship was clearly apparent in relation to how often they experienced the state of mental silence. “The health advantage appears to be connected to this aspect more than any other feature of the meditation lifestyle. In other words it is quality over quantity. “While we

did expect that there would be some differences between the meditators and the general population we didn’t expect the findings to be so pronounced. We repeated large components of the survey several times to confirm our results and got the same outcomes.” The Australian government survey give a numerical score to each facet of mental and physical health and because it has been applied as a national measure for the past 10 years in studies around the world involving millions of people. It allowed the researchers to accurately compare the health profile of the meditators surveyed with the general Australian population. The meditators were primarily non-smokers and non-drinkers, so to adjust for that potential bias the researchers also compared the meditators to those parts of the Australian population who did not drink or smoke, and achieved the same results. “This is one of the first studies to assess the long term health impacts of meditation on health and wellbeing. When we take the evidence of this study, along with the results of our other clinical trials, it makes a strong case for the use of meditation as a primary prevention strategy, especially in mental health,” Dr Manocha said. Using tiny solar-panel-like cells surgically placed underneath the retina, scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine have devised a system that may someday restore sight to people who have lost vision because of certain types of degenerative eye diseases. This device — a new type of retinal prosthesis — involves a specially designed pair of goggles, which are equipped with a miniature camera and a pocket PC that is designed to process the visual data stream. The resulting images would be displayed on a liquid crystal microdisplay embedded in the goggles, similar to what’s used in video goggles for gaming. Unlike the regular video goggles, though, the images would be beamed from the LCD using laser pulses of near-infrared light to a photovoltaic silicon chip — one-third as thin as a strand of hair — implanted beneath the retina. Electric currents from the photodiodes on the chip would then trigger signals in the retina, which then flow to the brain, enabling a patient to regain vision. A study, published online May 13 in Nature Photonics, shows how scientists used rat retinas to assess the photodiode arrays in vitro, and how the diodes produced electric responses that are widely accepted indicators of visual activity. The scientists are now testing the system in live rats, taking both physiological and behavioral measurements, and are hoping to find a sponsor to support tests in humans. “It works like the solar panels on your roof, converting light into electric current,” said Daniel Palanker, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology and the paper’s senior author. “But instead of the

current flowing to your refrigerator, it flows into your retina.” Palanker is also a member of the Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory at Stanford and of the interdisciplinary Stanford research program, Bio-X. The study’s co-first authors are Keith Mathieson, PhD, a visiting scholar in Palanker’s lab, and James Loudin, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar. Palanker and Loudin jointly conceived and designed the prosthesis system and the photovoltaic arrays. There are several other retinal prostheses being developed, and at least two of them are in clinical trials. A device made by the Los Angeles-based company Second Sight was approved in April for use in Europe, and another prosthesis-maker, a German company called Retina Implant AG, announced earlier this month results from its clinical testing in Europe. Unlike these other devices — which require coils, cables or antennas inside the eye to deliver power and information to the retinal implant — the Stanford device uses near-infrared light to transmit images, thereby avoiding any need for wires and cables, and making the device thin and easily implantable. “The current implants are very bulky, and the surgery to place the intraocular wiring for receiving, processing and power is difficult,” Palanker said. The device developed by his team, he noted, has virtually all of the hardware incorporated externally into the goggles. “The surgeon needs only to create a small pocket beneath the retina and then slip the photovoltaic cells inside it.” What’s more, one can tile these photovoltaic cells in larger numbers inside the eye to provide a wider field of view than the other systems can offer, he added. Stanford University holds patents on two technologies used in the system, and Palanker and colleagues would receive royalties from the licensing of these patents. The proposed prosthesis is intended to help people suffering from retinal degenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. The former is the foremost cause of vision loss in North America, and the latter causes an estimated 1.5 million people worldwide to lose sight, according to the nonprofit group Foundation Fighting Blindness. In these diseases, the retina’s photoreceptor cells slowly degenerate, ultimately leading to blindness. But the inner retinal neurons that normally transmit signals from the photoreceptors to the brain are largely unscathed. Retinal prostheses are based on the idea that there

are other ways to stimulate those neurons. The Stanford device uses near-infrared light, which has longer wavelength than normal visible light. It’s necessary to use such an approach because people blinded by retinal degenerative diseases still have photoreceptor cells, which continue to be sensitive to visible light. “To make this work, we have to deliver a lot more light than normal vision would require,” said Palanker. “And if we used visible light, it would be painfully bright.” Near-infrared light isn’t visible to the naked eye, though it is “visible” to the diodes that are implanted as part of this prosthetic system, he said. Palanker explained what he’s done by comparing the eye to camera, in which the retina is the film or the digital chip, and each photoreceptor is a pixel. “In our model we replace those photoreceptors with photosensitive diodes,” he said. “Every pixel is like a little solar cell; you send light, then you get current and that current stimulates neurons in the inner nuclear layer of the retina.” That, in turn, should have a cascade effect, activating the ganglion cells on the outer layer of the retina, which send the visual information to the brain that allows us to see. For this study, Palanker and his team fabricated a chip about the size of a pencil point that contains hundreds of these light-sensitive diodes. To test how these chips responded, the researchers used retinas from both normal rats and blind rats that serve as models of retinal degenerative disease. The scientists placed an array of photodiodes beneath the retinas and placed a multi-electrode array above the layer of ganglion cells to gauge their activity. The scientists then sent pulses of light, both normal and near-infrared, to produce electric current in the photodiodes and measured the response in the outer layer of the retinas. In the normal rats, the ganglions were stimulated, as expected, by the normal visible light, but they also presented a similar response to the near-infrared light: That’s confirmation that the diodes were triggering neural activity. In the degenerative rat retinas, the normal light elicited little

response, but the near-infrared light prompted strong spikes in activity roughly similar to what occurred in the normal rat retinas. “They didn’t respond to normal light, but they did to infrared,” said Palanker. “This way the sight is restored with our system.” He noted that the degenerated rat retinas required greater amounts of near-infrared light to achieve the same level of activity as the normal rat retinas. While there was concern that exposure to such doses of near-infrared light could cause the tissue to heat up, the study found that the irradiation was still one-hundredth of the established ocular safety limit. Since completing the study, Palanker and his colleagues have implanted the photodiodes in rats’ eyes and been observing and measuring their effect for the last six months. He said preliminary data indicates that the visual signals are reaching the brain in normal and in blind rats, though the study is still under way. While this and other devices could help people to regain some sight, the current technologies do not allow people to see color, and the resulting vision is far from normal, Palanker said. Other members of Palanker’s lab involved in the research are graduate students Georges Goetz, David Boinagrov and Lele Wang; senior research associate Philip Huie; research associates Ludwig Galambos and Susanne Pangratz-Fuehrer, PhD; and postdoctoral scholars Yossi Mandel, MD, PhD, and Daniel Lavinsky, MD, PhD. In addition, Theodore Kamins, PhD, a consulting professor in electrical engineering, and James Harris, PhD, professor in the School of Engineering, are co-authors. I  primi  “dottori clown”  apparvero  negli  anni  Ottanta  a  New  York.  Michael  Christensen,  clown  professionista, impiegato all’epoca al Big Apple Circus,  insieme a Paul Binder,  fondò nel 1986  la “Clown Care Unit”, per portare  il sorriso  e  la  fantasia  negli  ospedali  pediatrici.  Su  questo modello  “Le  Rire Medecin”  in  Francia  e la  Fondazione Theodorain Svizzera hanno dato il via a programmi analoghi nel 1991 e nel 1993. La comicoterapia ha raggiunto un altissimo grado di popolarità anche grazie al film «Patch Adams», interpretato nel 1998 da Robin Williams: la storia vera di Hunter Patch Adams, un compassionevole studente di medicina che rischia la sua carriera sfidando la classe medica con la sua decisa convinzione che ridere sia “contagioso”. Oggi Patch Adams è il testimone delle potenzialità della clownterapia, ha fondato e dirige il Gesundheit Institute, una comunità medica olistica  (propugnatrice  cioè  di  una medicina  propensa  a  tener  conto  di  tutti  gli  aspetti  dell’essere  umano,  quindi anche quelli psicologici ed emotivi). I volontari clown: Sollecitare  la  ricchezza  interiore  di  ciascuno,  per  quanto  la malattia  e  la  povertà  possano mortificarla:  questa  la “missione” di Vip  Italia Onlus. Partendo da un approccio che riconosca bellezza e gioia della vita,  i volontari‐clown portano il sorriso e la fantasia negli ospedali, nelle case di riposo, nei centri per portatori di handicap.   È  il medesimo approccio utilizzato per  i progetti rivolti ai paesi  in via di sviluppo:  l’ingenuità,  la semplicità,  la gioia contagiosa  del  clown  possono  attirare  i  giovani  di  strada  e  convincerli  che  vale  la  pena  di  vivere  e  di  lottare  per vincere tossicodipendenze, sofferenze e angosce esistenziali.  Tanto  per  le  attività  in  corsia,  quanto  per  le missioni  nei  paesi  in  via  di  sviluppo,  tutti  i  volontari  ricevono  una formazione  che  spazia dall’ambito  igienico‐sanitario,  fino  a quello psicologico, oltre naturalmente  a una  specifica formazione

per quanto riguarda le tecniche clown, di micromagia e giocoleria, comunicazione verbale e non verbale, favolistica, etc.   I volontari che hanno terminato il corso di formazione, svolgono in seguito un periodo di tirocinio durante il quale il tirocinante viene accompagnato  in corsia da volontari già “formati”, per  imparare a mettere  in pratica  le  tecniche apprese durante la formazione in aula.  Clown in corsia e non solo: Oggi sono 3000 i volontari clown di VIP Italia Onlus che prestano settimanalmente servizio negli ospedali italiani ‐ sia nei reparti infantili, sia in quelli per adulti, nelle case di riposo e nei centri per portatori di handicap.  I volontari clown VIP si riconoscono perché indossano camici coloratissimi, con le maniche a righe bianco/gialle e bianco/verdi e il colletto rosso. Insieme all’inseparabile naso rosso, i volontari clown VIP portano spensieratezza nei reparti ospedalieri, irrompendo con dolcezza nelle stanze, giocando con lo stupore e la meraviglia dei pazienti e coinvolgendo i parenti e il personale ospedaliero. In questo modo anche una stanza d’ospedale appare più colorata e allegra, e  l’atmosfera più serena e rilassata contribuisce al recupero del benessere dei pazienti stessi.  L’attività di Vip Italia non si limita alle strutture socio‐sanitarie: anche nelle scuole e nelle piazze italiane si possono incontrare  i volontari clown VIP e non  solo  in  Italia, ma anche  in Missioni  in Paesi  in Via di Sviluppo.  Il  linguaggio universale del clown e l’istintiva allegria che esso genera, sono il veicolo più adatto a entrare in contatto con studenti e ragazzi per sensibilizzarli sui temi della solidarietà e del volontariato e per andare oltre le barriere linguistiche. La ricerca sui neutrini permette la scoperta di vortici negli abissi del mar mediterraneo orientale. Grazie a un progetto di ricerca sui neutrini dell’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) e’ stato possibile osservare per la prima volta nel Mediterraneo la presenza di catene di vortici marini alla profondita’ di oltre 3000 metri, grandi strutture d’acqua del diametro di circa 10 km, lentamente in moto alla velocita’ di circa 3 centimetri al secondo.L’articolo che descrive questa scoperta (Abyssal undular vortices in the Eastern Mediterranean basin di A. Rubino et al.) viene pubblicato oggi sul giornale scientifico online Nature Communications e firmato tra gli altri da ricercatori delle sezioni INFN di Roma1 e Catania e dei Laboratori Nazionali del Sud dell’INFN.Questa scoperta e’ stata fatta grazie alle misure oceanografiche svolte nell’ambito dell’esperimento NEMO (Neutrino Mediterranean Observatory), un progetto dell’INFN

che prevede la realizzazione di un apparato strumentale per la rivelazione su fondali oceanici del passaggio di neutrini di alta energia provenienti dallo spazio profondo. Per lo studio del sito piu’ opportuno per la realizzazione di questo apparato, l’esperimento NEMO ha posto a 3500 metri di profondita’, nel mar Ionio, una serie di strumenti per la misura delle correnti e della temperatura, raccogliendo lunghe serie temporali annuali di dati. L’analisi di questi dati, svolta da Angelo Rubino, oceanografo dell’Universita’ Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, e dai suoi collaboratori ha messo in luce la presenza di catene di vortici marini profondi, che la comunita’ oceanografica non si attendeva in un bacino chiuso come il Mediterraneo. Di questi vortici va chiarita l’origine. Potrebbe essere locale ma gli autori della ricerca non escludono un’origine remota legata a processi di instabilita’ fluidodinamica nelle acque del Mar Adriatico e/o del Mar Egeo: questi processi darebbero luogo a strutture rotanti e lentiformi in grado di percorrere centinaia di chilometri senza perdere le loro caratteristiche dinamiche e idrografiche. Simulazioni numeriche, risultati teorici e precedenti misure su diversi siti sembrano confermare queste conclusioni. I vortici osservati avrebbero un ruolo di particolare interesse nell’ambito delle variabilita’ climatiche del Mar Mediterraneo. Cinque anni fa l’esperimento NEMO, con un apparato acustico posto a 2000 metri di profondita’ davanti a Catania, aveva rivelato una presenza altrettanto inaspettata, per quantita’ di soggetti, di cetacei e in particolare di capodogli in quella zona di mare. First investigations of a galactic nucleus with the AMBER instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer in Chile.An international research team led by Gerd Weigelt from the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie in Bonn reports on high-resolution studies of an active galactic nucleus in the near-infrared. The observations were carried out with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The use of near-infrared interferometry allowed the team to resolve a ring-shaped dust distribution (generally called “dust torus”) in the inner region of the nucleus of the active galaxy NGC 3783. This dust torus probably represents the reservoir of gaseous and dusty material that “feeds” the hot gas disk (“accretion disk”) and the supermassive black hole in the center of this galaxy. The resolved dust torus has an angular radius of only 0.7 milli-arcseconds on the sky, an angle that is 5 million times smaller than one degree. This angular radius corresponds to a radius of approximately 0.5 light years for a distance of 150 million light years. Studies of the physical properties of these dust tori are very important to improve our understanding of their structure and interaction with the accretion disk. To obtain these measurements, the light from up to three telescopes of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer was interferometrically combined. This method is able to achieve an angular

resolution equivalent to the resolution of a telescope with a diameter of 130 Meters. Extreme physical processes occur in the innermost regions of galactic nuclei. Supermassive black holes were discovered in many galaxies. The masses of these black holes are often a millionfold larger than the mass of our sun. These central black holes are surrounded by hot and bright gaseous disks, called “accretion disks”. The emitted radiation from these accretion disks is probably generated by infalling material. To maintain the high luminosity of the accretion disk, fresh material has to be permanently supplied. The dust tori (see Fig. 1) surrounding the accretion disks are most likely the reservoir of the material that flows through the accretion disk and finally “feeds” the growing black hole.Observations of these dust tori are very challenging since their sizes are very small. A giant telescope with a mirror diameter of more than 100 Meters would be able to provide the required angular resolution, but unfortunately telescopes of this size will not be available in the near future. This raises the question: Is there an alternative approach that provides the high resolution required? The solution is to simultaneously combine (“interfere”) the light from two or more telescopes since these multi-telescope images, which are called interferograms, contain high-resolution information. In the reported NGC 3783 observations, the AMBER interferometry instrument was used to combine the infrared light from two or three telescopes of ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI, see Fig. 2). This interferometric method is able to achieve an extreme angular resolution that is proportional to the distance between the telescopes. Since the largest distance between the four telescopes of the VLTI is 130 Meters, an angular resolution is obtained that is as high

as the theoretical resolution of a telescope with a mirror diameter of 130 Meters – a resolution that is 15 times higher than the resolution of one of the VLTI telescopes, which have a mirror diameter of 8 Meters. “The ESO VLTI provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of active galactic nuclei,”, says Gerd Weigelt from the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie in Bonn. “It allows us to study fascinating physical processes with unprecedented resolution over a wide range of infrared wavelengths. This is needed to derive physical properties of these sources.”And Makoto Kishimoto emphasizes: “We hope to obtain more detailed information in the next few years by additional observations at shorter wavelengths, with longer baselines, and with higher spectral resolution. Most importantly, in a few years, two further interferometric VLTI instruments will be available, which can provide complementary information.”To resolve the nucleus of the active galaxy NGC 3783, the research team recorded thousands of two- and three-telescope interferograms with the VLTI. The telescope distances were in the range of 45 to 114 Meters. The evaluation of these interferograms allowed the team to derive the radius of the compact dust torus in NGC 3783. A very small angular torus radius of 0.74 milli-arcsecond was measured, which corresponds to a radius of 0.52 light years. These near-infrared radius measurements, together with previously obtained mid-infrared measurements, allowed the team to derive important physical parameters of the torus of NGC 3783.”The high resolution of the VLTI is also important for studying many other types of astrophysical key objects”, underlines Karl-Heinz Hofmann. “It is clear that infrared interferometry will revolutionize infrared astronomy in a similar way as radio interferometry has revolutionized radio astronomy.” The research team comprises scientists from the Universities of Florence, Grenoble, Nice, Santa Barbara, and from the MPI für Radioastronomie. Contact: Prof. Dr. Gerd Weigelt, Head of Research group “Infrared Astronomy”, Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie, Bonn. La strana galassia Centauro A è raffigurata in questa nuova immagine dell’Osservatorio Australe Europeo. Raggiungendo un tempo totale di esposizione di più di 50 ore, questa è probabilmente l’immagine più profonda di questo oggetto singolare e spettacolare. L’immagine è stata ottenuta dallo strumento WFI (Wide Field Imager) sul telescopio da 2,2 metri dell’MPG/ESO all’Osservatorio di La Silla in Cile. Centauro A, nota anche come NGC 5128 [1], è una massiccia e singolare galassia ellittica con un buco nero super-massiccio al centro. Si trova a circa 12 milioni di anni luce da noi, nella costellazione australe del Centauro, ed ha la caratteristica di essere la radio-galassia più evidente in cielo. Gli astronomi pensano che la brillantezza del nucleo, la forte emissione radio e i getti di Centauro A siano dovuti a un buco nero centrale con una massa di circa 100 milioni di volte quella del Sole. La materia delle zone dense centrali della galassia rilascia incredibili quantità di energia cadendo verso il

buco nero. L’immagine del WFI (Wide Field Imager) permette di apprezzare la forma ellittica della galassia, evidente nelle zone esterne più deboli. Il bagliore che riempie la maggior parte dell’immagine è prodotto da centinaia di miliardi di stelle più fredde e più vecchie. Contrariamente alla maggior parte delle galassie ellittiche, però, la forma regolare in Centauro A è disturbata da una fascia larga e non uniforme di materiale che oscura il centro della galassia. Questa fascia oscura contiene grandi quantità di gas, polvere e giovani stelle.  Ammassi stellari giovani e brillanti sono evidenti ai bordi, in alto a destra e in basso a sinistra, di questa fascia, insieme con la luce rossastra delle nubi di idrogeno che stanno formando nuove stelle, mentre alcune nubi isolate di polvere si stagliano sullo sfondo stellato. Queste caratteristcihe, insieme con la forte emissione radio, sono prove evidenti che Centauro A è il risultato della fusione tra due galassie. La banda di polvere è probabilmente il resto distorto di una galassia a spirale che viene lacerata dall’attrazione gravitazionale della gigante ellittica. La nuova serie di immagini del WFI comprende lunghe esposizioni ottenute attraverso filtri rossi, verdi e blu, oltre a filtri appositamente progettati per isolare la luce emessa dall’idrogeno e dall’ossigeno. Quest’ultimo ci aiuta a identificare le tracce del getto ottico vicino a Centauro A, appena visibili in un’immagine precedente con lo stesso strumento. Due gruppi di filamenti rossastri si estendono dalla galassia fino all’angolo in alto a sinistra

dell’immagine, più o meno allineati con i getti giganti molto evidenti nelle immagini radio. Entrambi i gruppi di filamenti sono delle incubatrici stellari che contengono giovani stelle molto calde [2]. Sopra al lato sinistro della banda di polvere si vedono i filamenti interni, a circa 30000 anni luce dal nucleo. Più in là, a circa 65000 anni luce dal nucleo della galassia e vicino all’angolo in alto a sinistra di questa immagine, sono visibili i filamenti esterni. È visibile anche una traccia molto più debole verso il basso a destra che probabilmente è il contro-getto.Centauro A è stata studiata diffusamente nelle bande di lunghezza d’onda dal radio fino ai raggi X. In particolare, osservazioni radio e X sono state fondamentali nello studio dell’interazione tra l’energia prodotta dal buco nero centrale super-massiccio e il materiale circostante. Lo studio di Centauro A con ALMA è appena iniziato.Molte delle osservazioni di Centauro A usate per costruire questa immagine sono state effettuate allo scopo di verificare se fosse possibile utilizzare survey condotte da terra per individuare e studiare le stelle variabili in galassie, come Centauro A, al di fuori del Gruppo Locale [3]. Sono state scoperte più di 200 nuove stelle variabili in Centauro A. Note:[1] La galassia è stata segnalata per la prima volta dall’astronomo britannico James Dunlop all’Osservatorio di Parramatta in Australia, il 4 agosto 1826. È spesso chiamata Centauro A poiché rappresenta la prima sorgente importante di onde radio scoperta nella Costellazione del Centauro negli anni 1950. [2] Non è chiaro quale sia l’origine di entrambi i filamenti: gli astronomi discutono se siano il risultato della ionizzazione prodotta dalla radiazione emessa dal nucleo o il risultato delle onde d’urto all’interno dei grumi di gas. Il 18 maggio si tiene il primo ‘Fascination of plants day 2012′, un evento internazionale per divulgare il ruolo chiave delle scienze vegetali nel settore agro-alimentare, farmaceutico, energetico e per la tutela ambientale. Iniziative didattico-divulgative del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche a Milano, Roma e Napoli a partire da domani 16 maggio. Una giornata internazionale per celebrare la bellezza e l’importanza delle piante. È il ‘Fascination of plants day 2012′, iniziativa lanciata per la prima volta dalla European Plant Science Organisation che si svolgerà a livello internazionale il prossimo 18 maggio. In Italia la manifestazione è promossa e organizzata da diversi istituti del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Cnr). “L’iniziativa”, spiega Aldo Ceriotti, coordinatore degli eventi milanesi e ricercatore dell’Istituto di biologia e biotecnologia agraria (Ibba-Cnr), “ha l’obiettivo di illustrare come la nostra vita sia strettamente legata a quella delle piante e come la ricerca ci possa aiutare a produrre tutti gli alimenti e le materie prime vegetali di cui abbiamo bisogno, in maniera sostenibile e senza danneggiare ulteriormente gli ecosistemi naturali”. La manifestazione coinvolgerà 39 Paesi, più di 400

istituzioni scientifiche, università, centri di ricerca e imprese, che per l’occasione apriranno al pubblico laboratori, serre sperimentali, orti botanici e musei. A Milano l’evento, organizzato dall’Ibba-Cnr in collaborazione con l’Università, si articolerà dal 16 al 20 maggio. “I ragazzi potranno partecipare a percorsi guidati nelle aree verdi di Milano, visitare una mostra sulla domesticazione delle piante e imparare in un laboratorio interattivo come estrarre il Dna dai pomodori. Inoltre il 18 maggio in diverse sedi, tra cui gli Apple store, sarà presentato un nostro video sulla bellezza delle piante e sul ruolo della ricerca nel settore della biologia vegetale”, conclude Ceriotti. A Roma la piattaforma tecnologica It-Plants organizza il convegno scientifico ‘Fascination of plants day Italia’ che si terrà il 18 maggio alle ore 10,30 nella sala capitolare del Senato (piazza della Minerva 38). Parteciperà Domenico Pignone, coordinatore del Dipartimento scienze bio-agroalimentari del Cnr. Infine alla Città della Scienza di Napoli, il 18 maggio l’Istituto di genetica e biofisica (Igb-Cnr) ‘A. Buzzati Traverso’ e l’Istituto di genetica vegetale (Igv-Cnr), in collaborazione, tra gli altri, con l’Università Federico II e l’Università di Salerno, propongono un percorso didattico-divulgativo. “Illustreremo la biodiversità degli ortaggi tipici della Campania usati per la nostra alimentazione”, spiega Roberto Defez, ricercatore dell’Igb-Cnr e coordinatore della manifestazione di Napoli. “Mostreremo come migliorare geneticamente le piante o come usarle per tingere tessuti e per il risanamento ambientale. Esperti internazionali del settore geotermico, imprese, associazioni ed Istituti di Ricerca insieme per la geotermia. Dal 17 al 19 Maggio a Napoli, Villa Doria D’Angri, in Via Petrarca 40, si terrà una Conferenza Internazionale dal titolo: “Sustainable geothermal exploitation in urbanised environments: the Southern and central Italy volcanic areas”. La Conferenza riunirà a Napoli i maggiori esperti internazionali del settore geotermico, insieme ad imprese, associazioni ed Istituti di Ricerca che si occupano di geotermia.  Lo scopo è mostrare che la geotermia, con le attuali tecnologie, è una fonte energetica estremamente versatile, che si presta alla co-generazione elettrica e termica su una larghissima scala di dimensioni d’impianto, dalle centinaia di kW alle centinaia di MW di potenza, con impatto ambientale estremamente basso. L’estrema adattabilità della taglia degli impianti, insieme al trascurabile impatto ambientale ottenibile utilizzando tecnologie di re-iniezione completa in falda dei fluidi geotermici dopo il

loro utilizzo, rende la geotermia moderna inseribile anche in aree altamente urbanizzate, quali sono quelle del margine Tirrenico centro-meridionale, dalla Toscana alla Sicilia. Queste aree, caratterizzate da vulcanismo attivo o spento, hanno enormi risorse geotermiche, che possono essere utilizzate in modo ideale con un nuovo concetto di produzione energetica che prevede impianti di taglia medio – piccola diffusi sul territorio, in alternativa al modello attuale Italiano di grandi impianti concentrati in poche aree. Il modello di generazione distribuita, con piccoli impianti diffusi sul territorio, associato allo sviluppo di reti elettriche servocontrollate (smart grids) diminuirebbe drasticamente le perdite dovute alle lunghissime linee di distribuzione attuali, che ammontano a quasi il 7% dell’energia elettrica generata. Questi argomenti saranno affrontati e discussi, durante la Conferenza, dalle maggiori personalità scientifiche e tecniche nel campo della geotermia mondiale, a partire dagli Islandesi che saranno presenti con Olafur Flovenz, Direttore del prestigioso Istituto Geofisico e Vulcanologico ISOR; con Omar G. Fridleifsson, coordinatore del progetto IDDP (Icelandic Deep Drilling Project), che si propone di raggiungere le profondità a cui i fluidi geotermici sono a temperature super-critiche (maggiori di circa 390°) per raggiungere potenze geotermiche 10 volte maggiori degli impianti attuali. Ci sarà poi, per gli USA, Wilfred Elders, uno dei maggiori esperti al Mondo di perforazioni geotermiche, coordinatore con Fridleifsson del progetto IDDP, che descriverà il

grande sviluppo che la geotermia sta avendo oltre oceano. Ulrich Harms dell’ICDP (International Continental Drilling Program) parlerà dei grandi progetti di ricerca internazionali che fanno uso di perforazioni crostali profonde, alcuni dei quali, come l’IDDP e il CFDDP (Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Program) sposteranno decisamente in avanti le frontiere della vulcanologia e della geotermia. Per la Germania ci sarà Ernst Huenges, Capo Dipartimento del settore geotermico del GFZ, il prestigioso Istituto Geofisico Tedesco, riferimento scientifico del grandissimo sviluppo geotermico che la Germania ha iniziato da qualche anno, pur avendo risorse estremamente minori rispetto a quelle Italiane. Per la Francia, il Capo Dipartimento del settore geotermico del BRGM (Bureau de Recherches de Geotermie et des Mines), Jaques Varet, illustrerà l’esperienza unica dell’impianto EGS (Enhanced Geothermal Systems) di Soultz-sous Forets, in Alsazia, il primo esperimento industriale di geotermia stimolata, con pompaggio esterno di acqua in rocce calde secche, allacciato definitivamente alla rete elettrica Francese dal 2009. Per l’Italia ci saranno poi: Bruno Della Vedova, esperto di geotermia dell’Università di Trieste e vice-presidente dell’Unione Geotermica Italiana, Alberto Carotenuto, dell’Università di Napoli a capo del Distretto Tecnologico Campano per la Geotermia, Giuseppe De Natale (INGV), coordinatore del CFDDP (Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project) che si propone lo studio vulcanologico innovativo della caldera

flegrea e delle sue immense risorse geotermiche. Molte le associazioni che si occupano di geotermia: UGI (Unione Geotermica Italiana); GIGA (Gruppo Informale per la Geotermia e l’Ambiente), che ha organizzato due mesi fa in Regione Toscana la Conferenza analoga ‘Geotermia del XXI Secolo’; l’Assoknowledge-Confindustria SIT, che ha lanciato recentemente, insieme ad INGV, ENEL e CNR l’Alleanza Tecnologica Nazionale sull’Energia Geotermica. Ancora, l’Associazione per lo Sviluppo del Mezzogiorno, la SRM (Studi e Ricerche per il Mezzogiorno) e la Fondazione Banco di Napoli, con il loro Presidente l’economista Adriano Giannola.Parteciperanno inoltre i maggiori Istituti di Ricerca che si occupano di geotermia, come INGV e CNR, AMRA scarl e le maggiori Università napoletane, tra cui la Parthenope, co-organizzatrice della Conferenza e l’Università  Federico II.La Conferenza ha ricevuto l’Alto Patronato della Presidenza della Repubblica, ed i patrocini del Ministero per l’Ambiente, Regione Campania e Comune di Napoli. Saranno presenti alla Conferenza il Governatore Stefano Caldoro, gli assessori regionali ai lavori pubblici, alle attività produttive ed all’ambiente; il Vice-Sindaco di Napoli Tommaso Sodano ed il neo-eletto sindaco di Pozzuoli Vincenzo Figliolia. Saranno inoltre presenti aziende leader nell’impiantistica geotermica come Turboden di Brescia, e molte società che stanno investendo nella geotermia in Campania.
