Flowers are blooming and temperatures seem to be back on track for the season, meaning my wardrobe can get itself back on track for the season as well. I feel like I really haven’t addressed enough spring fashion as of late, so this column is dedicated to adding a little spring pep into everyone’s step. I’m borderline obsessed with one fresh new concept that’s both flirtatious and fun, and I simply love it when shapely silhouettes become the forefront the fashion industry. Gone are the days of the skin tight mini skirt or barely there bandeau. There’s a new flirt in town, and it goes by the name of a peplum.

I carried a peplum dress in my store in fall 2010 believe it or not, when it was still up in the air as to whether or not the trend would really catch on. Since then, it’s done a little more than catch on, and is currently in just about every store, in the form of skirts, tops, and dresses. If you’re not quite sure what a peplum even is, let me just tell you that it’s pure bliss. The word ‘peplum’ originates from Greece and refers to a short overskirt. It’s usually protrudes slightly from the natural waist into a short skirt that accentuates a slim waist and adds a big of volume (in a flattering way) to the hips. Peplums come in all varieties of pleats and ruffles as well as in varying lengths. It’s a retro concept without being too dainty, modern peplums are popping up in bold prints and pastel neon hues, making them surprisingly new and fresh.

Peplum Skirt: The peplum pencil skirt is both cute and sophisticated, which are two concepts that are tough to get out of one article of clothing. If you’re a business gal, opt for a peplum pencil skirt to add to your work wardrobe this spring. They’re available at literally every price point and pattern right now, so choose one that suits your style and personality. The skirts also vary in length and style, so choose what’s right for you! If you want to cover your back side, chose a skirt that dips in the back. If you have boyish figure and need to create some curves, opt for a shorter, straight peplum style in a bold print. If you choose a peplum in a contrasting color or print from the actual body of the skirt, this will create an even shapelier silhouette. The possibilities are endless!
Peplum Top: This is probably my favorite peplum style right now, because it’s so new for spring. Available in strapless, tank, or cap sleeve styles to name a few, the peplum top creates a slim waistline and a little bit of flounce. Plus it can be worn with pants or shorts, which makes it the most user-friendly of all peplum styles. Chose a bold color (think tangerine… the top color of spring) or a fun print for a pop of color over a pair of basic black pants.
Peplum Dress: This is probably the safest way to rock the peplum trend because it requires no options of a second piece. A black peplum dress is both naturally slimming and figure flattering, making it the best bet for a peplum newbie. Since it has an overskirt to hide an imperfect midsection, it’s a spring trend that’s actually wearable for just about anyone, and creates an eye catching illusion of all the right curves. Rock this style to a wedding or cocktail party this spring and summer and you’re bound to get showered with compliments.

No matter what your personal style, there’s likely a peplum out there for you this spring. From black peplum tops with embellishments to floral peplum dresses, there’s something out there for the edgy girl to the girly girl, and everything in between. This style is also available in mature, sophisticated styles, making it appropriate for almost any age group as well. Have fun with the hottest trend of spring, and be sure to add at least one of these peplum styles to your closet this spring.

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a nail art column, and with the temperatures heating up, so should your manicures! Prom and Wedding seasons are rapidly approaching, so it’s time to study up on the hottest nail trends for Spring 2012. I can hardly contain myself with pistachio hues popping up all over the fashion world, and what’s better than a minty maven manicure? I may be a little biased, considering I plan on incorporating a variation of this color in my wedding, but this color craze has got me craving some mint chocolate chip ice cream from the Big Chill (so unbelievably good)! Perfect Pistachio: This dreamy, creamy shade of green is practically heaven sent. Fall gave us a lot of army and hunter greens, but this spring its’ all about being minty fresh. Pastel Neons: I practially get weak in the knees when I see a creamy neon hue, whether it be clothing or nail polish. In season’s past bright, 80’s style neons seemed to be a big hit, but this year it’s a tad more sophisticated. If you still have your neon polishes from last summer, add some white polish and create your own softer version. If you’re looking to buy, check out the Orly and China Glaze polishes like these at Sally Beauty Supply!
Girly Glitters: These big, chunky glitter polishes are fun yet sophisticated, which is hard to do when it comes to glitter. Stick to the glitter polishes that have champagne hues added in, or purple for a little fun. Try Jewelry Heist or Papa-Paparazzi by Wet n Wild’s new Spoiled nail color line. It’s $1.99 and available at CVS. Enough Said.
Basic Beige: Nude nails are all the rage right now, similar to last season but with a twist. It’s all about matching the natural nail to your skin tone. Printed Polish: Nail art is still a huge craze. Go with an art deco inspired mani for the freshest look. Another busy week it’s been thus far for this gal. Fortunately for me, exciting things have been happening in my life, and I have more adrenaline running through these veins than Tim Tebow on game day. Anyway, I know this is an exciting time for all you high schoolers out there, picking out your prom dresses as if you were being photographed by the paparazzi at the Academy Awards. But what makes a good prom dress and how difficult is it to find? There are so many options out there now, with drastic price differences, styles, and colors to choose from, so where do you start?

Finding a perfect dress for any occasion is always a challenge. We as females are faced with a ton of issues, such as distorted body images and so much more (like bad cuticles, how horrible?!). While I may not be able to give you the perfect body, I may be able to ease the pain in finding that dress that will make your high school sweetheart swoon.

Get prepared! First things first, so do a little leg work. While you can’t possibly know what style of dress is best suited for your body type until you try it on, looking in magazines and online is always a good idea. Checking out what celebrities are wearing to awards shows is always a great idea to be on trend. Just make sure the celebrity you’re trying to imitate was on the best dressed list, not worst. Exclusively You in Bloomsburg carries Faviana, which specializes in red carpet inspired dresses! Bring photos of things that inspire you to a dress appointment and show your sales associate ideas of what you like and what you may be looking for in a prom dress. Beware, though: try to stay away from getting your heart set on one specific dress before you head out to shop. This can be discouraging for you and the salesperson and really ruin the fun!

Schedule an appointment in advance. Dress shops and specialty stores love it when you call in advance and set up an appointment. They are better equipped to help you that way and can dedicate a solid hour to solely you on most occasions. Be sure to ask for an opinion from the salesperson! They see tons of dresses on a daily basis and know what’s flattering on different body types and skin tones. Plus they usually love it when a client takes their advice!

Dress like you mean it. Always try to wear similar undergarments to those you would be wearing with the actual dress. Another idea would be to bring along some extra options so that you can try them on with the dresses if necessary. For instance, if you plan on wearing a slimming undergarment with the dress, definitely bring it. It can seriously affect the way a dress looks and feels!

Try on some heels. A special occasion dress always looks better with the right shoes. Even if you plan on purchasing shoes elsewhere, try shoes on with the dress. Or bring a pair of basic heels from home. You’ll look taller, stand straighter, and feel better!

Go Couture! Well sort of. If you want to be totally different and have a hand in designing your own dress, schedule a consult with a seamstress such as myself. I love doing custom dresses for people and always have a fun time creating someone’s dream dress. It’s not any more expensive than buying one off the rack and tons of fun!

Ask to purchase the floor sample. If it fits you perfectly and it’s already in stock, why order? Yes, it may have been tried on a few times, but you can usually ask for a discount and possibly walk out with it the same day.

Do A LOT of research before buying online. Yes, you may be able to find a dress cheaper online, but if you haven’t tried it on you could be making a huge mistake! It’s hard to know what size to order and so much more when ordering online. Save the shipping cost (which may add up to the cost of the dress in a store anyway) and alteration nightmares by heading to a physical store.

Have fun with your dress shopping and don’t be too serious with it. Let’s face it, every dress doesn’t look perfect on everybody, so be open to suggestions and bring a trusted confidant with you for their input. Just don’t bring an entourage. Things could get ugly.

High Class... Thrifter?

I’ve never been one to pass up a good deal. Let’s face it, times are relatively tough for many of us and our budgets are tight. But who says that we need to sacrifice our style just because we don’t have thousands to spend on a killer new wardrobe? I know that I’ve alluded to my knack for sifting through the used clothing racks at places like the Salvation Army and Goodwill before, but for those of you for whom this is uncharted territory, it may all seem a bit…well…crazy, perhaps? Well you’re right, sort of.

There are many different reasons people tend to do some, most, or all of their shopping at thrift stores, which can range from being environmentally conscious, to being financially savvy, to a love for vintage styles or a hankering for quality apparel. Unfortunately, due to our country’s greed (this is obviously a severe generalization), we currently only manufacture approximately 2% of what we’re wearing, which is drastically different from the 98% that our country once proudly produced. Along with that greed, came a drastic decline in the quality of materials and construction of the garments that are now sold in most of the mass market stores across the globe. Quality control has taken a backseat to fast turn around and inexpensive foreign labor, forcing us to shop more frequently and fill the pockets of seemingly every else but ourselves. Think about it. Do you really think your brand new top would even make it to a thrift store in 20 or 30 years? Doubtful, considering if may possibly have a few pulls or holes after the first washing, even on a gentle cycle.

Although I do love vintage silhouettes and fabrics, the main reason I shop at thrift stores is the adventure of the hunt and the quality of a hand crafted Made in the USA garment or a famous Italian Designer name. It’s like searching for a hidden gem that’s just waiting to be plucked out from the surrounding imposters. If you’re not a seasoned thrift store vet like moi, however, here are some tips and tricks that can help you fake it ‘til you make it.

Determine if thrifting is even something that you would enjoy. Let’s face it. Many of you could care less about finding one perfect piece and would rather do your shopping online. So do that! Thrifting can be a hassle and quite annoying, in fact, for someone who doesn’t love the challenge of a bargain and the hunt for the gem. Just remember, in order to find the diamonds, one must sift through a lot of rocks.
Allow yourself plenty of time. I’m talking 1 hour at the absolute minimum. I can kill hours upon hours without even realizing it, especially if I’m with my mother. Never, ever, take my mother or myself up on an offer to tag along. You will likely be laying down on one of the bed bug filled sofas before we have gotten through the pants.
Pick a section and see it through. If you have something in mind you are in search of, say the perfect pair of dress pants, head to that section immediately and narrow that section down further to a general size range. Remember, sizing has changed dramatically in the past 10 years or so, so you may be able to go up a size or two (or even three), depending on the designer and year of the garment. Oh yes, we as Americans like to sugarcoat the fact that our hips are ever expanding. Ah, yes, what was once considered a standard sizing in the 1940’s and 1950’s has somehow gone to the wayside and we’ve added some “padding” per se. Haven’t you ever wondered if Marilyn Monroe was really a size 12? She had a 23 inch waist according to her dress maker, which is not even in the same ballpark as a size 12 by today’s standards.
Pick a good day to shop. If you’re looking for the best possible deals and cheapest prices, it would probably be best to hit the racks on sale days. Wednesdays are family day at Salvation Army, and most items are 50% off. If you’re looking for the biggest selection, Tuesday may be the best bet. On average, most donations come in over the weekend and take a day or two to be processed and put out for sale, making Tuesday the optimum day to shop.
Bring a smart phone. Seriously. If I find a gorgeous piece that I can’t live without I could care less who the designer is. But if you’re looking for pieces that may have resale value, it may be valuable to Google a tag that is less familiar to see if the item may have vintage value. You may end up wanting the cash more than wanting the clothes!
Check carefully for holes, stains, tears, etc. Even if you find a quality garment with a small imperfection, still consider it. Is it a stain that can likely be removed? Do you have a tailor who is capable of fixing a small hole or a missing button? I’d never turn down a killer look for a slight imperfection. In fact, I sometimes buy pieces just because they have cool buttons or another element that I may want to use for something else.
Don’t be afraid to try things on. It may skeeve you out a little, but don’t be afraid to try things on. I typically try to wear a pair of black leggings and a tight fitting black tank so I can easily slip things on over them. I can still get the general idea of fit and not leave the store feeling the need to shower immediately.
Wash before wearing. Basically all thrift store finds have a unique “scent” of sorts (more like a strange odor of mothballs and musky feet). Always wash or dry clean your new finds before wearing to rid them from any odors or stains left behind from the previous owner. You can also use home remedies like vinegar to get out tough odors like cigarette smoke.
Wear your items and do as those before you have done- Donate! I go through my closet at least twice a year and sell and donate things that I have not worn at least twice within the last year. Sometimes I kick myself a few years down the road for the things that I purge, but you can’t keep it all! Plus you need to make space for your new thrifty finds.

I think I’ve plagued you long enough by continuously ranting on my love of below-freezing temperatures and fluffy fur coats. Clearly the big man upstairs didn’t feel like blessing us with a ski season this year, so I’m dubiously throwing in my puffy down filled parka and am on to more colorful things, such as Spring Fashion! Since I can barely remember to water myself, I’m obviously not much of a flower girl, unless we’re speaking of a floor length floral print frock, of course. I must admit, each year when Spring starts to show her warm sunny face I get super excited just like the rest of you, regardless of how little snow I got to shovel this year (and the realization that I need to start running 15 miles per day for the next 3 months straight if I plan on wearing any of my shorts from last year).

For those of you who don’t know a whole lot about the world of fashion, it can be quite confusing. New York Fashion Week took place February 9-16, but designers were showing their Fall 2012 Collections (designers show their lines for next season, then buyers from around the globe determine what lines they want to carry for next season, which then determines the production of the actual lines themselves). To make a long story short, as much as I love seeing the latest collections, my brain can only hold so much information at once (which seems to be increasingly less and less with each birthday) so I could really care less about next fall right now. I was fortunate enough to attend Spring 2012 Fashion Week, which took place in September of 2011. So confusing, right? Well it’s even more confusing for me to sift through 5 months of information to uncover Springs most pertinent and wearable trends, but there are a few standouts that have left an indelible impression in my mind.

From washed out neons (think pastel meets 80’s color) to the beloved peplum silhouette (if you aren’t familiar with a peplum, Google it immediately- I love the false illusion of curves it creates), spring fashion is full of feminine, structured sportswear, if you will. My absolutely favorite trend this spring, however, is the influx of bold prints that are beginning to line the shelves and racks from store to store. Floral prints seem to be a staple for just about every spring, but this season the prints are exaggerated and quite a bit of fun. I’m talking full on floral print pant suits, tropic thunder maxi dresses, and bold neon floral prints mixed with stark white elements. If you’re not quite sure of how to pull this look off without looking like a flower child on Halloween, start small and work your way up. The most important element in this to keep things fresh is to stick with a modern print. Buying vintage and thrift store shopping can certainly be fun, but it’s also an easy way to look like you went thrift store shopping (have no fear… a thrift store tutorial is on its way for next week). To ensure you’re on trend, stick with a floral that is this season, and don’t try anything too dainty. This spring is all about having fun and being a little bold. Think bright pops of color and in your face prints! Here’s one of my most recent floral additions in my store:

By the time you read this, this will have already been “one of those weeks”. You know, a week filled with twelve-hour workdays. By Sunday I’ll be feeling like my brain looks similar to a fried egg. As a matter of fact, I’m already half way there.

Therefore, I will be enticing you this week with a column on the importance of fashion’s presence in not only your closet, but throughout your home as well.

This topic comes to mind naturally for me this week, since I’ve been spending quite a number of hours lately working on some fun interior projects that, until now, were completely out of my element.

For those of you who don’t know, I do have some credentials for talking about interior spaces. I have a degree in Interior Design, have studied a little bit of historical architecture, and also worked as a Designer & Product Development Assistant at Decorator Industries before their unfortunate closing in 2009. My style is fairly unique to, well, basically myself. I love hitting up yard sales and thrift stores, turning something old into something new with a little paint and/or new fabric. I would describe my style as eclectic chic, sort of a mash-up of artsy do-it-yourselfer meets modern whimsy. That probably didn’t paint much of a picture for most of you, so I’ll be sure to include an interior photo of my house so you can try to envision just how crazy I really am.

As it turns out, I’ve been privileged enough to be working for someone with an equally insane sense of style, just from another century. Where my style is a little edgy, his style is traditional and almost skeletal at times. As if the sense style being from another century isn’t enough for me to wrap my brain around, the materials and fabrics that I’ve been given to work with are also upwards of two hundred years old. What does a two hundred year old piece of cotton or silk look like, you ask? Well, it looks like its two hundred years old. Most of the materials I’ve been working with are riddled with holes and hundred-year-old patch jobs. Much of the work consists of preparing the fabric, meaning patching or reinforcing small pieces that then have to be joined into larger pieces to then create an actual slipcover or pillow.

The most challenging part for me (strangely enough) in this whole process has been to color outside the lines so to speak. The strange thing about working with fabrics from the 1800’s is that nothing really matches. Think about it, fabric was quite pricey, so literally anything that even remotely matched was used in patching and repairs. While I’ve been trained to try to pattern match seams and patches to make them look almost invisible to the naked eye, I have been forced to relearn and revisit my technique to put these mismatched pieces on display more or less.

This got me thinking about interior design and what a great design is really comprised of. After all, there are so many different styles and tastes out there, so what are the important factors in creating a look that is uniquely you and reflective of your life and personality? Design is all about space, light, colors and textures, and personality. Incorporating all of these successfully should give a room a sense of harmony and cohesiveness. Here are a few tips and tricks on designing your own personal space using all of these abstract ideas:

Space & Balance: For most of us, space and balance are probably the two most important components of our interior designs. Since many of us actually live in the spaces we design, having a functional space is key. Start by choosing a style of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial, and go from there!
Light: Depending on the space you’re working with, the correct lighting can set the tone for how a space is used and perceived. For instance, Northern facing windows are important in an artist studio to provide the best natural lighting scenario. On the other hand, incandescent lighting can be added to provide emphasis to a focal point and create a little drama in a space. Since most of us are not lighting specialists, be sure to ask for assistance at a lighting showroom!
Color & Texture: Probably the easiest way to alter the mood of a space, color and texture add major flair with minimal effort. For a calming experience, choose a soothing shade of green or blue to paint your walls. To liven a space, choose a warm hue of yellow, orange, or red. To add texture, get creative with soft furnishings and fabrics treatments.
Personality: Meaningful objects add a personal touch and make the space uniquely yours. Bookshelves offer a great space to add trinkets and personality as bookends without getting cluttered.

I can honestly say that I look at some of the designs that I’ve recently been a part of helping create and they are truly breathtaking. While I would have never envisioned such a creation in my wildest dreams, they are absolutely works of art. I cannot take credit for any of the actual designs whatsoever (I’m a seamstress on this project, though I’m frequently referred to as Queen Bee as well as various other nicknames that allow me to feel much more important than I really am), I can say that I’ve really enjoyed bringing a female perspective to things and helping to “soften” some of the space with a little color in an otherwise monochromatic (white) palette. Unfortunately I’m one of those annoying types that always has an opinion about everything, so I’m constantly throwing my two cents in. Most of the time I’m shot down, but I have had a few small victories with some fabric selections. In case you still can’t imagine the differences I’ve been speaking of, here’s a photo reference to cogitate.

DIY Valentine Top

Seeing as though I talked about men last week, and addressed all the lovers out there back in January, I suppose that it’s only fair that I write a column geared toward all the single ladies out there. You know the type. The Valentine’s Day scrooge who wishes cupid would shove those stupid arrows where the “sun don’t shine” as they say. Since I like to play fair, this one’s for you, sweetheart.

Just because you aren’t in love, doesn’t mean you can’t look lovely while you’re sitting at home with a frown on your face and that bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon when the 14^th rolls around. Remember ladies: that grotesque scowl you’re currently sporting can lead to monstrous frown lines, and we don’t need any of those, especially if we’re single (and can’t afford Botox). Here’s an idea: Turn that frown upside down and get crafty with your bad self. Go ahead, be a little narcissistic and give yourself a gift this year. After all, you’re single and probably won’t be receiving bouquets of flowers or boxes of chocolates (which is really a gift in itself if you take into consideration how many unnecessary calories you’ll be sparing yourself). Or, better yet, gift one of you unsuspecting single friends with your heartfelt DIY Valentine! She’ll be forever grateful that you remembered her on this day that is typically meant for all the couples out there.

DIY Lace Inset Heart Shirt

Fold a piece of 8.5x11” paper in half (as you would to create a greeting card)
Using a marker, draw a half heart on the fold of the paper. I used a French curve to create mine, but it is just as simple to freehand your design.
Cut your heart design from the paper and set heart cutout aside
Select a shirt of your choice (tank, t-shirt, or long sleeved shirt), and turn inside out.
Lay the original paper (with heart cutout) flat on the inside out shirt. Measure in .5” from the outside edge of the paper heart stencil and follow the heart shape, marking the t-shirt with a marker.
Cut the shirt along the marker line, making a heart cutout in your shirt that will be 1” less in diameter than your original paper cutout (.5” on each side).
Take the paper heart cutout and trace the shape onto a piece of lace of your choice. Or, use an old shirt of your choice to create the heart from. Try something fun, like a wild pattern or texture to inset in your new shirt!
Cut the heart shape from the lace or fabric of your choice, and pin or glue onto the wrong side of your cutout shirt.
If you would like to sew the heart in place, either hand stitch or machine stitch around the outline of the heart, fusing the shirt to the inset fabric. If you are not a sewer, simply use some fabric glue!
Turn shirt right side out and enjoy!

Voila! You’re new shirt may not get you a lover, but it will make you feel lovely about your craftiness, and you’re cute new top. Happy Valentine’s Day! Boys Will Be Boys.... And So Will The Girls.

It’s probably the number one reasoning tactic for a stylish lady. Find the perfect guy, and worry about the perfect wardrobe later. After all, you can totally talk the perfect guy into letting you help him with the perfect wardrobe, right? Umm, maybe? I’ve yet to fully attempt this age old practice, so I’ll have to report back with the lab results if and when I ever decide to transform the unsuspecting fella. After all, no one likes a pushy female, so we are probably better holding off, right? I believe there is typically a not-so-friendly, five-letter-word associated with those pushy types of women. Certainly I would never be associated with such things.

Instead, I’ll take my love of menswear and wear it myself, just a little prettier version of it. Menswear inspired looks are so huge right now, from bold collars and bowties, to tuxedo shirts and loafers. I can’t get enough of this empowering style, but it can be a little daunting for the faint-of-heart or fashion newbies.

First and foremost, let’s reap the benefits. There are countless reasons for playing up the masculine trend. Not only can this trend be incredibly cheap (i.e. raid the hubby’s closet. Or your Dad’s), it can also be incredibly fun, sporty, and even sexy! Yes, sexy! As I may have stated once or twice, I’m a fairly big advocate of dressing classy (not trashy) and firmly believe that less clothing does not equal more appeal. In fact, you’re perfect guy may even think it’s cute that you actually dig his wardrobe so much for once and embrace you with open arms for wanting to “borrow” some of his shirts. Do not, under any circumstance, feign a washing machine malfunction in attempt to assist your man in purchasing a new wardrobe. There goes your cuteness factor and in comes the not-so-nice, five-letter-word factor.

Whatever your motive, if you intend to do the menswear trend throughout the remainder of winter, or opt to wait for spring when gorgeous floral print fabrics will allow some girly options for your menswear, there are a few simple rules I’ve devised to help you keep the menswear look believable, cute, quirky, and sexy, all in one.

1. Proportion Control. Oversized is in. It looks timeless and effortless, but gorgeous at the same time. You don’t, however, want to wear a head to toe oversized ensemble. To keep things tailored and neat, pair an oversized blazer over skinny jeans or a cute dress. To lengthen your look, wear the oversized blazer over a tailored maxi dress or black skinny jeans with black booties. To have a bit more fun with the look, try a printed or bold color skinny jean (like tangerine!) If a plaid men’s shirt is more your speed, try pairing it with a fitted pair of ankle jeans in a vintage wash and tie it together with some tall wedges and bold jewelry. This look is casual and cool, perfect for just about any occasion, even a baseball game.

2. Color Story. Since the menswear fad is all about men’s styles and proportions, adding a feminine touch of color will keep you from, well, looking manly. Attempting the oversized suit jacket? Try it in a bold red (and smear some red lipstick on to match). To make a plaid shirt daintier, tuck it into a flouncy skirt, possibly with even a contrasting pattern in the same color family as the plaid shirt (think tiny polka dots or a micro floral print). Experimenting with color and pattern will allow you to figure out what works and what doesn’t, and it can often be quite surprising to see what works may be what you least expected! Also, experimenting with complimentary colors (opposite on the color wheel), monochromatic (any shade, tint, or tone of one color), or analogous (next to each other on the color wheel) can make for amazingly stylish fashion!

3. Accessorize and Prettify. Probably my favorite menswear trend this year is in the details. The accessories that complete a look can be so fun, especially when they’re a little out of the “norm”. Bowties are huge right now, and allow a fun and flirty addition to an otherwise boring look. Instead of actually stealing your dude’s bowtie collection, try one with a fun print and details, or long tails that make it a bit more girly. Women’s cuff links, collars and cuffs, handbags, ties and shoes are only a few of the vast world of accessories that have been inspired by men this year. A good tip to keep in mind if giving a bowtie a try is to leave the necklace at home. The tie makes enough of a statement itself, and anything else framing the face will be a distraction. Simple earrings are also a staple with this look.

Have fun with your menswear inspired looks and remember to keep things light and feminine. When trying any new trend, it’s important to not take yourself too seriously! Spend some time playing with some items and seeing what works for you.

Crush On This: Tangerine Tango, The Color of 2012

Yes, lovelies, it’s finally here. Pantone’s top color of 2012, that is! While I am well aware of the fact that this information was released weeks ago, I haven’t found this information to be relevant for a PA native until now. I finally got my few inches of snow (I also got my shoveling workout, as short-lived as it was), and am now on to warmer things, just like our current weather forecast seems to be.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, Pantone is basically the authority on all things color. If you have seen The Devil Wears Prada (and are obsessed like myself), you can probably envision the scene where Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) snickers to herself regarding the similarity of two belts that Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) is debating over for a photo shoot. Miranda quickly refutes Andy’s apathetic approach to fashion by teaching her a lesson regarding the actual color of her sweater being cerulean, not blue. Well the moral of the story is, before the trends actually trickle down to the stores that most of us know and actually shop in, someone out there is making the color choices of the year for us. Enter Pantone.

Pantone is used by tons of industry professionals from a variety of color-dependent industries, including textile designers, fashion designers, interior designers, and graphic designers to name a few. Pantone’s color of 2012, Tangerine Tango, is a “spirited reddish-orange” hue intended to “provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward”. Well, I’m not sure if our answers lie in something as simple as the color of our shirts, but hey, I’m willing to give it a whirl. It also helps that the color is lively and dramatic, quite similar to my personality, I suppose.

How does all of this information tie into fashion? Well, just like the color cerulean in The Devil Wears Prada (where the color cerulean trickled down to some tragic Casual Corner where Andy undoubtedly fished it out of a clearance bin) the color Tangerine Tango has already littered a slew of spring runways last September, such as L.A.M.B (a personal favorite of mine), Derek Lam, Christian Siriano, Acne, and of course Michael Kors (I was in attendance of this one and was fortunate enough to view the hue up close & personal). In fact, even Sephora has teamed up with Pantone, and will be releasing a new makeup line based on the orange hue which will be released sometime this March. What this means for the average consumer? Expect to see tons of orange in every store this spring, as early as next month. Hopefully you have a particularly vivacious attitude, blue or green eyes (which are particularly flattering with this hue), and like to wear brown (no one wants to look like a giant jack-o-lantern in April).

Not sold on wearing a full-length bright orange maxi dress, dressing your bridesmaids up as pumpkins, or painting a whole room in the tangerine hue? Not to worry, there are tons of ways you can show your support for 2012’s favorite color in a more refined manner. By using Tangerine Tango as an accent color, of course! While I’m not sure that I’ll be lining my closet in wall to wall Tangerine Tango or if I’ll be sporting orange eye shadow this spring, I am certain that I will opt for more subtle hints of the color in my wardrobe, makeup bag, and my home. Think nail color, lipstick, throw pillows, and pants. Yes, pants! I’m fairly certain that a bright pair of Tangerine skinny pants for spring would look oh-so-fab with a neutral wedge sandal and creamy, flowing, lacy top. I just got so excited that I almost wished my beloved winter be gone! Keep dreaming.

Hello, Lovers. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but believe it or not February will be here in virtually no time at all, meaning sneaky cupid is currently sharpening his pretty little arrows. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, but it’s hard to believe that in just a few weeks some of you will be dancing around with little pink cartoon hearts for pupils. I can’t say that I’m much different, because deep down inside just about everyone wants to be gifted a box of dark chocolate covered strawberries, from a special someone, right? Perhaps I’m feeling a bit nostalgic today, but I couldn’t help but think about this lovely little holiday that’s right around the corner.

I know what you’re thinking… how can I be concerned with Valentine’s Day when we’ve yet to celebrate Groundhog Day?! To be quite frank, I love winter in Pennsylvania and always secretly hope that little creature sees the biggest shadow ever, and flees back to his crummy hole for six weeks and then some. The Skinny on Food + Fashion

I typically never use recipes when in the kitchen, but each time I've made this dish it's been a huge hit, so I just had to jot it down. Such a hit, in fact, no one even misses the actual pasta! Try topping this dish with grated parmesan cheese!

I’m writing about food this week. That’s right, food. Do I have any authority whatsoever to teach healthy eating habits? Well, not really (although I have always been an advocate of a balanced diet and am fairly well versed on this topic). Have I ever worked in a kitchen? No, unless you count my brief stint in my church soup kitchen 10 years ago. I do, however, really like to eat and I also really like to cook!

I know this column is supposed to be about style and fashion, but to be quite honest, the only thing that has popped into my brain this week that is even remotely worth writing about has been edible in nature. Perhaps my hunger issues are due to the twelve-day fast I’m currently undergoing, during which I have removed meat, gluten, and coffee from my diet (I cheated on my birthday for a red velvet cupcake and enjoyed every last crumb). You better believe that when my 12 days are up I will thoroughly enjoy being treated to a 12oz birthday filet mignon. I do think that this food-related topic does come at an apt time, seeing as though many of you may be initiating New Year’s resolutions to lose weight or healthify your lifestyles (yes, I am aware that I just made up a word). All jokes aside, food is definitely related to style and fashion in some manners. Personal style is absolutely affected by a confidence that can grow from knowing that you are healthy, regardless of size, and eating properly is definitely a solid place to start.

I have been known to have some extreme opinions on a few things, and food (unfortunately for you) is one of them. I gained approximately 60 pounds during pregnancy, which is A LOT for a typically active person who enjoys eating healthy (it wasn’t until I buckled down and revamped my diet, re-joined the gym, and started seeking a personal trainer’s help regularly that I finally lost all of the weight 12 months later). It’s so hard to get sucked into eating poorly for so many reasons! Eating crappy is fairly cheap, it’s “easy”, and it tastes so good, right? Yes, these may be true, but feeling lethargic, irritable, and developing lasting health concerns are just a few of the very common issues that coincide with a poor diet. Not to mention being unable to fit into your favorite pair of “skinny jeans”. Obviously a nutrition lesson would be a bit too lengthy for one column, nor can I really claim to be a professional on this topic (i.e. Please seek a medical professional before drastically revamping your diet and blaming Moi. I don’t need any lawsuits on my hands). I will, however, tell you what I believe to be a few key factors to maintaining a healthy diet and staying in your favorite skinniest jeans.

What are calories? We all learned about them in grade school, but it’s so easy to forget what calories actually are, and what they mean to us. Of course I remember from Chemistry that a calorie is defined as a unit to measure the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. Umm, ok, that’s a great little piece of info to remember but doesn’t mean a whole lot to the vast majority people. I like to think of consuming calories as putting gas in my car. Yes, food is enjoyable, but just as overfilling a gas tank can cause a mess, so can overfilling your body! Although the amount of calories needed is dependent on age, sex, weight, activity level, and muscle mass, figuring out an average number of calories that you consume to maintain your weight will also help you to determine what you need to do to lose weight, if that’s your goal. Many people stick to the 2000-calorie guideline (which is unfortunately, I believe, quite high for an average adult woman whom is not exercising regularly). Here’s a reality check: Hypothetically speaking, let’s say McDonalds is your thing and you rather enjoy the Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger they now advertise. Well, according to www.mcdonalds.com, a Medium Value Meal featuring that sandwich contains 1390 calories, which is practically an entire day’s worth of calories for the average lady. Ew! Not to mention the harmful trans fats, sodium, and sugars this meal is packed with. You wouldn’t want to fill your precious vehicle with bad gasoline, would you?
What's a balanced meal look like? Pretty, duh, just like your new wardrobe after dropping a pant size or two. Lots of color! Contrary to popular belief, traditional carbohydrates as we know them are not a necessary part of a healthy diet, although they are tasty and rice does make an excellent side dish. I like to fill my healthful plate with as many textures and colors as possible, and always a lean protein such as fish or chicken (there’s nothing wrong with red meat, either and eggs are essential for breakfast). By colors I don’t mean fruity pebbles (whoever invented cereal for breakfast is a moron, anyway), but I do mean lots of veggies and fruits! The best vegetables are always the most colorful, and those are typically the best for you, also! Diet tip: Mashed cauliflower with garlic is in my opinion just as tasty as mashed potatoes and so much better for you!
How much is too much? Portion control is never fun for anyone, but the key to success is to eat until you are satisfied, as opposed to eating until you are full. Not only is it a good idea to eat until you are satisfied, eat frequently. For me, eating frequently seems to keep my metabolism at it’s most efficient, and also prevents me from overeating a bunch of crap from being famished. I always keep nuts on hand for convenient snacking, especially natural raw almonds. I eat almonds daily for the most part, with Greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast, in salads for lunch or dinner, and for snacks in between. They’re chock full of protein, magnesium, potassium, vitamin e, and antioxidants. They are also high in fat (the good kind!), linked to lowering the risk of heart disease, and known to lower cholesterol. As with anything, it’s important to not over do it and eat an entire jar of peanuts daily, but nuts are a tasty snack that always seems to do the trick to keep cravings at bay. Try them!

Obviously for some, losing weight is far more complicated than following these silly guidelines, but hopefully this may give you a little food for thought. (or at least squeeze you back into those skinny jeans a few weeks sooner!) As with any diet, always consult a physician before attempting to diet, and adding an exercise routine to your plan is always the best bet! The Wonderful World of Winter Accessories

Hey, the temperature has finally dropped! Strangely enough, I rather enjoy the cold weather and the entire winter for that matter. January is my birth month, after all (on a side note, I have been known give 15% discounts to customers that wish me happy birthday next week and I also accept gifts). If only these temperatures would stick around and bring me enough snow to make for decent skiing conditions. Well, since I’ve yet to worry about the color of my snow pants this winter, I’ve had plenty of time to consider more fashionable items, such as winter accessories! Ugly Sweater Party!

Hello, 2012! With 2011 officially checked off of my to do list, there’s no better way to start fresh in 2012 than to clean out the closets. I am sure we all have things that would be better off in the hands of someone else, or better yet, recycled into something as fresh as the New Year! Most of us have some pretty horrific finds hiding deep in the darkest corners of our closets that are just dying to make a comeback, so bring it on 2012.

Is it possible you attended one of those weird ugly sweater parties this year and are stuck with a cheerful mess of embroidery on your hands? Perhaps Grandma made you a homely knit for Christmas this year, or last year for that matter, and you would hate to hurt her feelings by not making it useful somehow. Maybe your New Year’s resolution is to cut back on the cookies and lose a few pounds and you’d like to rid yourself of some oversized clothing? Or you could just be looking to re-invent your style and rid yourself of any and all snowflake sweaters from seasons passed. Whatever the reasons may be, most of us have some sort of sweater stuffed in our closet that we have no idea why we would have purchased. More importantly, as each year passes it becomes more and more important to renew, reuse, and recycle as many resources as possible, including textiles. To me, sweaters always seem like a good idea, but rarely are actually very useful for more than one season. All of those old knits have to be good for something, however. They are cozy and warm, and have cute little designs and patterns… just not designs and patterns that I wish to wear as a top.

Regardless of why you wish to rid them from your closet, think twice before throwing these cozy creatures in the trash pile. Old sweaters are awfully useful for many things, such as recycled toys, jewelry, and more. Not getting the picture? How awesome would it be to turn your child’s favorite out-grown sweater into a stuffed animal they could cherish for years to come? Sweaters can also make awesome pieces of jewelry. Start by covering large wooden beads with an old knit and stringing them onto a silk ribbon. My favorite way to repurpose an old sweater, however, is to turn it into an infinity scarf! If you are unfamiliar with the infinity scarf, it’s a huge trend right now, so get familiar. An infinity scarf, or circle scarf, is simply what it’s called. It is one continuous loop of material that creates a “circle” so to speak. I am completely obsessed with these, since I am a clumsy mess and regular scarves seem to end up everywhere but around my neck for some reason (I’ve also been caught tripping on a scarf that is haphazardly dragging on the ground once or twice).

Google ‘infinity scarf’ and you will yield about 5,750,000 results in 0.24 seconds. My brain began spinning shortly after, especially when I saw all of the shopping results with prices ranging from $19.94 at Old Navy to $209.99 at Saks Fifth Avenue. By this point, I felt like I had been riding the ring of death at the fair with no sign of being let off anytime soon. This is when I realized that I could make an infinity scarf for virtually nothing, and it would most likely be way cooler than any $200 scarf I had ever seen. And all you need is a pair of scissors and a sewing machine (optional).

1. Find a clean sweater with a fun pattern or texture that you would like to recycle. If you’re cleaning the closets, be certain this sweater really needs to be retired before moving along to step 2. Try to find an acrylic sweater with a tight knit (these will be less likely to fray less, if you do not intend to hem the cut edge).

2. Using a ruler, determine how wide you would like your infinity scarf to be. Measure from the bottom of the sweater up toward the neck. If you would like an average scarf, 10 inches would be a sufficient width to mark your sweater at. In fact, you would most likely be able to get two scarves out of a women’s medium sweater at this width. I like a very thick, chunky infinity scarf, so I cut my sweater at 18” from the bottom of the sweater, as shown.

3. Cut around the entire sweater, and remove the top portion of the sweater. Use the top of the sweater for a jewelry project or other craft!

4. Though this step is optional, I do recommend hemming the raw (cut) edge of the sweater, even if your sweater isn’t fraying. It will create a longer lasting, more professional looking scarf that no one will believe you made in 5 minutes. Using a few straight pins, turn the raw edge of the sweater to the inside two times. Your raw edge will be hidden in the center of the hem. Straight stitch around, creating a finished hemmed edge.

5. Show it off! Scarves are a great addition to accessorize any basic outfit, so enjoy your new project by wearing it! This project is guaranteed to get tons of compliments, so be prepared to start making these as gifts for all of your loved ones.

As I was thinking about this week’s topic of discussion, I was having a hard time focusing. I know that New Year’s Eve is rapidly approaching, and my main concern right now should be what shade of glitter I plan on wearing next weekend, however, my lackadaisical approach to Christmas shopping this year has got me really far behind. Actually, I’m making many of my gifts this season, which is gentle on the pockets but miserable for my brain cells due to much procrastination. Well, by the time you read this, hopefully I have all of my gifts completed. If not, surely my dad will be content with a white chocolate candy bar or two. Anyway, Merry Christmas! I hope that everyone receives a little extra joy today. But how the heck am I going to get my two year old to behave without threats of Santa not bringing him a “real big racetrack”?

Moving along to the actual topic of discussion… Hopefully someone out there remembers the bling bling title as a line from a somewhat famous rap song circa 1999. What awesome musical taste did I have as a teenager? Well, unfortunately my ‘bling bling’ headline is not in reference to a highly extravagant gold dollar sign necklace or a large diamond studded pinky ring, but I am talking about my most favorite types of bling, sequins, sparkle and shine! While I dare to wear all things sparkly any time of year, this is obviously the most important sequin-donning day of all. For starters, others are actually wearing head to toe glitter also, so I don’t stand out like a sore disco ball (as I sort of did last Sunday). This of course leads to my second point, which is that a little healthy competition never hurts. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the fairest sequined ensemble of them all?

This season, it’s all about color (or lack thereof)! While the traditional approach to New Year’s Eve looks stick to mostly shimmer of the silver family, this year is drastically different. Dresses, tops, and bottoms of the glitter family come fully equipped with lots of bold color and/or patterns. I love the bright jewel tones right now, especially when offset with black. To try this look, keep it {relatively} simple. Stick to one show-stopping piece, such as a bold colored sequin dress, or a brightly colored shoe studded with some rhinestones. Offset these jewel tones with some black, and you’ve got a fantastically festive look that’s not overdone. Another new trend to try this year is mixing metals. If bold colors aren’t your thing, you can still stick to basic metallic shades and be very fashion forward. Who said gold and silver don’t make a killer combo? I’ve sort of always bent the rules in fashion, but there’s no better time to try on a sparkly trend than New Year’s. Try pairing a gold tone dress with bold silver accessories and shoes. This look can be extremely chic if pulled off correctly, so don’t be afraid to take it for a test drive. The key to success with this look is to make sure it looks intentional. If you opt for a black dress with hints of gold and want to amp it up with silver, make sure you amp it up (i.e. chunky silver necklace and silver glitter shoes should do the trick), otherwise it could end up looking a mess.

Last Minute Gift Ideas!

“Hey! Hey YOU! Hey! Hiiiiii Santa! Hey look Mamma, Santa Claus over there!” says my little two-year-old elf (referring to and pointing at a white-bearded employee while we were shopping at a rather large, loathsome retail store that I’d rather not mention in this column). Yes, Christmas spirit is in the air, and no one can better remind us of that than our children. As I turned a nice little shade of pink and apologized to the gentleman, he informed me that this wasn’t the first time he had been mistaken for the elusive Mr. Claus. Hmm… these are hard times. Maybe this fellow is indeed Mr. Claus himself trying to earn some extra cash this holiday season? Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and don’t let anybody tell you different.

As the countdown continues for my little dude (who undoubtedly believes Santa will promptly deliver him a “real big racetrack” sometime during his slumber on Christmas Eve, I myself have been slacking a little in the gift giving department this season. I have yet to check many people off of my list, so I went in search of some gift ideas right in my hometown of Bloomsburg. I’m fairly aware of all of the great shops we have situated right on Main Street, but I rarely get the chance to venture in many (of them frequently (besides my own, because people sometimes ask me if I live here), so I was excited to find out what they had to offer in terms of gifts.

I started out at my own store and worked my way through a few of my other in-town favorites, which even included some time to sit down for a much needed meal at my favorite little corner eatery! If you have been slacking on your holiday shopping as much as I have, then read up, boys! Here are some of my favorite finds to put under someone’s tree this year:

1. A dinner for two at Balzano’s Italian Kitchen. Nothing beats the quaint atmosphere and being greeted by Mr. B (besides the food). A $50 gift card could comfortably allow two to dine at this downtown favorite since 1998 (not everyone was as fortunate as I to start taste testing family recipes and stuffing candy baskets in the early 90s). Pick up a favorite bottle of wine and sit back in the inviting atmosphere to indulge in the Italian family recipes Balzano’s has to offer. Is it possible to be considered Italian by association or love of food? If so, count me in. Balzano’s also offers catering services for Holiday parties, and amazing cookie trays. 2. Faux Fur and some sparkle from Exclusively You. As soon as you walk into Exclusively You, it’s hard to not want to get dressed up, but this bridal shop has much more to offer than just wedding dresses and prom gowns. Since I don’t have any special occasions to attend in the near future, I looked for practical options for everyday use (yes, a crystallized clutch is very practical in my opinion). The Donna Salyers Fabulous Furs are luxurious and stylish and would be a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe. My favorite was the cape coat, which can be ordered in sizes XS-XL in a variety of colors. I fell in love with the leopard and golden fox, and had to remind myself that this was about shopping for others, not myself. 3. Anything from Karen’s Candies. Literally, anything. As a pretty loyal candy consumer from a fairly young age, I have been a customer of “the candy barrel” for as long as I can remember. I used to make my grandmother take me there for giant jaw breakers as a kid (which are probably not even sanitary but oh so delicious). I’ve now graduated to all things dark chocolate but I’m pretty sure my two year old is addicted to their gummy bears. 4. Lindsay Phillips Snap Shoes from Krickett Square. My favorite thing they had to offer this season is the Lindsay Phillips line of customizable shoes! Umm, genius! Buy a pair of ballet flats or the super stylish new Kristen Black Patent Wedge and you can customize them with a large variety of “snaps” that just snap on to the front of the shoes! The concept is that you only need one pair of shoes (in each style, of course) for basically any outfit. Add the flair with the inexpensive snaps and you have a new pair of shoes for every outfit. 5. A good book, a dragon flagon, and some sugar cookie coffee from The Cloak & Dragon Bookstore. Every time I step into The Cloak & Dragon Bookstore I’m taken back to 8th grade and the countless number of shows I saw at Phillips Emporium way back then. All of those memories aside, The Cloak & Dragon Bookstore has more to offer than just young bands. Fresh coffee and a large selection of new and used books and some great finds from local artists, like this handcrafted “dragon flagon” coffee mug are great additions to anyone’s stocking this Christmas. I am envisioning myself sitting by a fire with that coffee filled dragon flagon and my new book as we speak. If only I had a fireplace… The Cloak and Dragon Bookstore is on Facebook!

6. Some furry legwarmers and scarves from The Purple Zebra, of course! I already made myself a pair or two, but what child of the 80’s can have too many pairs of legwarmers? Especially when they’re furry and fuzzy and everything nice? These legwarmers, or boot covers, are handmade by myself, and in my opinion make a spectacular gift for anyone who likes have a little fun with their wardrobe from time to time. Throw in a furry circle scarf and that’s a pretty wild gift!

Keep it Tight.

Sequin holiday dress selection, check. The perfect pair of patent leather pumps, check. Totally toasty fur coat for getting to and fro all of those Christmas soirees, check. Um, aren’t we forgetting something? Anyone who’s been following this column for the past few weeks is probably abundantly aware of my obsession with tights. No, I’m not talking about nude pantyhose that your mom used to wear under a mid calf plaid skirt. The options this fall are fresh and fun, with a massive color palate to chose from and tons of patterns and textures to cozy up with.

Since I take my dress rather seriously, keeping a considerable number of tight options in my lingerie chest is of upmost importance. These lingering warm temperatures are not making my job any easier, but nothing irks me quite as much as seeing a lovely lady walk down the street bare legged in December. Unless you’re hitting the red carpet anytime soon, I cannot think of one good reason to not be wearing tights on your lower half. On a side note, the combination of denim shorts and UGG boots is ridiculous. It looked ridiculous on Britney Spears during the summer of 2004. And it still looks ridiculous today. But you can wear demin shorts all year round if you select the right pair of tights (See. I knew there was a correlation between my UGG rant and tights- the denim!).

So what gives? Well, first and foremost, tights are practical, people. I like to wear skirts and dresses, as I’m sure many of you do as well. But I do not wish to have my dry pale skin exposed in the winter months, nor do I enjoy being frozen. For this purpose, a classic black pair of opaque tights of a heavier denier is essential to any winter wardrobe. By the way, control top black tights aren’t a bad suggestion for post Christmas dinner outings, either. The color instantly slims you and the control top does wonders for your waistline.

Not only are tights a practical way to extend your wardrobe, but they also add a little flair to your monotone looks. If you tend to have a problem purchasing all black, like myself, nothing makes your day quite as much as a fun pair of tights to spice things up a bit. Since tights are so in right now, your options are basically unlimited. Opt for a color to brighten up your look, or stick to the all black look with a patterned tight. Not only do a pair of tights up your style game, they can also be quite attractive. Since many of the leg-baring girls are most likely attempting to dress for a male counterpart, or are in search thereof, think again, sister. A wisely selected pair of tights can be just the right amount of leg with a little bit of class (and I’m fairly certain that classy always wins in the end). The tight possibilities are endless, so give them a try! Here are my favorite tights this season:

Jukebox Tights in the Twist, ModCloth, $34.99. These creamy dancing tights by Danish designer Sneaky Fox bring me back to my childhood. Give me a pair of saddle shoes and call it a day. Do You Smell What I Smell?

It’s about that time again that I bombard you with a sensory surfeit. With the holiday shopping season in full swing, nothing puts a smile on my face more than a shiny new perfume bottle and a great Christmas candle. It’s almost impossible to walk through a department store without noticing the amped up fragrance department this time of year, and you certainly can’t flip through a December fashion magazine without getting whamboozled into needing a new perfume with countless fragrance samples and advertisements. It is undoubtedly the busiest time of year for the industry, with many of the designers and celebrities alike launching their new scents just in time for the mad dash to the 25th. I’ve composed my top ten fragrance fantasy wish list, any of which I would be more than happy to receive under my tree (hint hint, Santa)!

Guerlain, ‘Vol de Nuit’ Powder Spray, $87 for 0.61 oz. This silky, ethereal loose powder included in the Holiday 2011 Collection is infused with an updated version of the legendary Vol de Nuit scent originally introduced in 1933. The powder has light reflecting properties that create an iridescent veil for your face, hair, and body. The scent is a sophisticated retro combination of chypre, galbanum, jasmine and vanilla accords. The puffer applicator and classic packaging tops it all off. Tom Ford, Violet Blonde, $65 for 1 oz. A sophisticated fragrance with durability. This is not a sweet, flirty fragrance by any means, but powerful, opulent, elegant, and oh so European with notes of Italian Mandarin, Baie Rose, Tuscan Orris Butter, Jasmin Sambac, Cedarwood, and Soft Suede. Dior, Miss Dior Cherie, $60 for 1 oz. Quite the opposite of the previous two scents, Miss Dior Cherie is a precious little blend of fruity-floral love and romance. Notes of Jasmine and Patchouli make this young, girly scent modern and captivating. Available at Bon-Ton stores and online.
Boyfriend, Boyfriend, $65 for 1.7 oz. Intriguing, right? That’s what I thought, too. I like masculine scents, and I’m totally not into really light “airy” perfumes, so I figured this fragrance by Kate Walsh would be right up my alley. I know it seems a little generic, but this fragrance is meant to smell like your boyfriend... on you (meaning the scent he leaves behind after a nice big hug of course). This scent balances vanilla, golden amber and night blooming jasmine with masculine musk and woods. Borderline genius. Available at Sephora stores and sephora.com.
Kiehl’s, Limited Edition Creme de Corps Holiday Collection, $29 for 8.4 oz. This isn’t really a scent, but it is a body item that is still creeped way up to the top of my list! Kiehl’s, which was founded as an old-world apothecary in New York’s East Village in 1851 remains as one of the leaders in skin care and beauty. Natural ingredients and simple, recyclable packaging are just two small reasons why Kiehl’s is still on top! Considered the richest moisturizer from the Kiehl’s line, this season Creme de Corps is available in a limited edition packaging featuring artwork by Jeff Koons. 100% of the net proceeds from this collection will go to The Koons Family Institute on International Law and Policy, an initiative of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Bath & Body Works, Be Enchanted Signature Collection, $5 - $40. WoodWick, Cinnamon Chai Candle, $23.99. Cinnamon is one of my favorite flavors and scents throughout the entire winter season. Woodwick candles feature a natural wick made from organic wood that creates the soothing sound of a crackling fire. The WoodWick premium candles are made by the Virginia Candle Company right here in the USA and last up to 175 hours! Yves Saint Laurent, Parisienne, $39 for 1 oz. This is not a new scent this year, but it is my favorite, so I had to include it on my list. Parisienne is described as “the essence of a woman who is incredibly free”, so perhaps that’s where it captured me. It’s a floral scent with a woody base that leads to it’s mysterious nature. Holiday Dress 101

Well, it’s officially time to diet. Waiting until after Christmas is out of the question for this gal for two main reasons: 1. I will probably eat enough pumpkin pie by myself on Thursday for at least 12 normal people to consume during the next 5 holidays (especially considering that I started baking them three weeks ago). 2. I like fancified little holiday dresses and I’d really like to be able to fit into at least one or two of them. While I’d love to be able to share successful diet tips with you, I’ve never been all that great at dieting, so I suggest you join a gym. Looks like I am going to have to dust my membership off next week. Bootcamp, here I come... again.

On the bright side of things, this year’s holiday dresses are filled with things that make me smile. Sequins, lace, velvet, and fur... these are just some of my favorite things! Yes, pretty dresses are certainly everywhere, but they don’t come with a how-to-pull-it-off tutorial, which is what many of us desperately need. Yes, I’m trying to brainwash you to be a classy lady, so keep reading!

I suppose the plan of attack must commence with the concept of what type of image we are trying to pervade. Are you trying to look professional and polished, enchanting and a little sexy, or just simply festive and cute? I know this time of year brings us together with people we haven’t seen in possibly years, and occasionally a person we would like to impress, so it can easily become a baffling time of dress. Personally, I suppose that I like to try to achieve an eclectic look of sorts, achieving (or attempting to) as many of the aforementioned looks as possible, so that I can be prepared for anything that comes my way. For example, you wouldn’t want to meet your boyfriend’s parents in a midriff bearing tube top and cutoff jean shorts, correct? Let’s hope not. My point is, you should probably leave this type of outfit for the beach (like literally, on the beach), not the general public. Unfortunately, some of us lovely ladies (especially my generation and younger) have a common misconception that sexy means dressing scantily. Ahem, oh how misguided you are. Here are some simple rules that I live by (and you should, too).

Cover up. This one gets me every time. So you want to look sexy, attractive, beautiful, etc. I wouldn’t think that anyone gets dressed and says they want to look particularly undesirable today, correct? Around the holidays we tend to get a little more dressed up and put on a little more glitz than usual. Even those of us who may not typically get “dressed up” may attempt a dress or two during this time of year. If you are going to don a pretty little party dress, however, be conscious of what you’re flaunting. My rule of thumb is to generally bare one not all. I’m mainly talking about your legs and arms, of course! Basically, if you are going to wear a sleeveless dress or any type of shoulder bearing top, you need to be covering up those legs, girlie. Of course you don’t have to wear a full length dress or pants, but in my eyes, tights(pantyhose) are not optional. I cannot even count how many times a week I ask a customer if “they’re going to be wearing tights with that”. It’s not so much of a question, but a strong suggestion. For example, let’s say you are going to a holiday party where the dress is “cocktail attire”. Yes I am aware of where we live, but I’m certain there are some classy Christmas parties out there somewhere (feel free to add me to your guest list if you happen to be having one). Let’s say you opt for a short (above the knee) somewhat fitted short-sleeved cocktail dress. You still need to wear tights because of the short hemline and fitted nature of the dress, and you should probably throw on a cardigan or blazer for good measure. This is not detracting from your appeal, but simply adding to your elegance in the least. As a matter of fact, we live in NEPA where it’s cold, so you should just wear tights at all times. Lucky for you tights are so in right now it should be very easy to find a favorite pair.
Festive, not Frumpy. Some of us get confused by holiday attire and think that dressing festive means ugly sweater party. My mother used to think it was cute to make me wear embroidered holiday vests when I was in grade school, so I feel your pain (she also gave me a lot of perms growing up- sick sense of humor she has). Traditionally, a “Festive” attire invite probably falls somewhere between business casual and cocktail attire. This means you could definitely get away with wearing a nice pair of jeans with some color or glitz on top. Leave your rudolf t-shirt at home (unless it looks really slick with some black skinny jeans and a sleek blazer, of course). If you’re most comfortable in your favorite pair of bootleg jeans, throw on a colorful shoe, bright silk top and glitzy cardigan or fur vest for a polished festive look!
Old Fabric, Fresh Look. All of the vintage-y textures that are in this season can sometimes be confusing. While it’s not ok to dress to young, at the same time no one wants to dress too old, either. Lace and velvet can be absolutely stunning, but it’s important to choose ways to wear them that don’t overwhelm your body and make you look older than you are. The easiest way to transform a lace dress into the perfect party look is to add some leather details. Whether it be a leather jacket, some black platform booties, or a mean little leather clutch, a touch of leather is a little lace dress’s dream come true. Try not to get too matchy-matchy with this idea, and you’ll definitely be the cool girl who isn’t trying too hard. Velvet can also be a little tricky to wear without looking dated. Velvet has come a long way this season, however, and there are a ton of options in stretch velvet(ish) fabrics that are meant for the modern girl. Try a sleeveless black stretch velvet number that’s body hugging with a hemline below the knee. This silhouette is huge right now. Pair it with some sheer tights and a bold shoe (think leopard or a bright green pump). Another way to have success with velvet is to opt for a long sleeve ballet type dress. Offset the shorter hemline with a pair of sheer tights and a sequined blazer or cardigan. Add some metallic pumps and matching jewels for a smoking hot holiday look!

Yes, this time of year can be especially stressful, but dressing doesn’t have to be. Keep it fun and flirty this season by mixing the luxurious fabrics of the season with sparkle and color. Hat Happy

If you haven’t been living under a rock over the past few months, you’ve probably noticed at one point or another the recent resurgence in ladies covering their heads (Think royal wedding). I’m talking hats (but no grotesque pink cowboy hats, please, unless you are an actual cowgirl)! As most of us know, hats used to be considered nearly mandatory for women to wear, and were often worn as an indicator of social status among women. If you’ve never heard of the term ‘milliner’, get familiar! Generally speaking, a milliner is a designer of hats, and was generally a woman’s occupation. Today, there are many male milliners, including one of New York’s favorites, Albertus Swanepoel, who just so happens to have a $19.99 line available at Target as we speak! Yeaaaahhhhh!

I know, I know, what’s the big deal about hats? No, I’m not saying anyone should be wearing a hat that stands two feet tall with doves mounted on top. But I am saying everyone should at least give a fashionable hat a try. Why, you ask? Well, numero uno, they are not just fashionable, they are functional. We live in Pennsylvania, and I, for one, have a pixie cut, meaning I want my ears covered when it’s cold outside. Other reasons may include but are not limited to: Looking cool, and putting a smile on grandmas face. Once again... ask your grandma if you can sift through her attic. She will be overjoyed that you think she has cool stuff. I don’t know how many times I have to reiterate that vintage is in, and in this instance, free!

So now that I’ve positively convinced you that hats are the it accessory for Fall/Winter 2011, where do you start? Here’s a list of the hottest hat trends to keep you stylish all Fall and Winter long.

Wide Brimmed. These were huge over the summer and are still a major trend. The fabrics have changed from light and breezy to darker, heavier weights. Why to try? They are romantic and feminine, and look awesome with long locks. Choose a floppy felt version for an instant facelift to any outfit this Fall, especially wide leg jeans or trousers. Fascinator. Ah yes, those sometimes outlandish, decorative hats that were exhibited at the royal wedding. These hats are typically worn on the front or to the side of you head, and are typically adorned with jewels, feathers, flowers, bows, etc. Opt for a seriously scaled down version of those seen at the royal wedding if you dare to try this trend. Fedora. The fedora really never goes out of style, but there are some awfully cheesy looking hats that lay claim to this trend. Keep it classy and opt for a wider brimmed fedora in a cool wool print or plaid. Of course solid black is always a great option, as are darker jewel tones. If you’re feeling funky, choose a fedora with some feather detailing. Feather Fedora, Express, $39.90.
Fur. Fur is everywhere this season, and head gear is no different. I love furry things, so of course hats are no exception. Try a faux fur headband in leopard. Warm and oh so fun. Faux Leopard Fur Turban Headband, The Purple Zebra, $12.
Knit Beanies. Loose fitting, slouchy beanies are snuggly, warm and chic this fall. This is a much more casual looking hat, perfect for just about anything. I love cozy crocheted beanies with pom pom tops. My mom gave me her favorite a few years ago, which was made for her by my grandmother in the 70’s I believe. I replicated that style and turned out my own versions, which I sell in my store! Crochet Slouch Pom Pom Beanies, The Purple Zebra, $12-20.
Bowler. This hat is a hard felt hat with a rounded shape and turned up brim. Stick to basic black on this one if you’re a hat newbie. This hat is versatile. It looks hipster when paired with black skinny jeans, black boots, a graphic tee and cardigan. It can also look vintage feminine when paired with a floral skirt, tights, and a dainty top. Cloche. This fitted hat was popular in the 1920s. If you’re into Boardwalk Empire, you’re into this hat. For the holidays, choose a felt cloche that has a little glitz. Women’s Wool Cloche Hat, Old Navy, $16.94.
Pillbox. Think 1960s Jackie O. These hats are super adorable on the right head, and can really compliment the right outfit. I love the small, rounded pillbox hats. Try the monotone look (i.e. red dress with matching red pillbox- so cute). Catarzi for ASOS Pillbox Leopard Bow Hat, asos.com, $50.32.

With so many varieties, obviously it’s a little daunting to have to choose just one. When in doubt, start small and stick to black. Leave the outlandish versions to the crazies (like myself). Shoe Heaven

The other day was one of those days. You know, one of the days that I wished I could hit the snooze button one more time, or maybe just call in sick, if that were an option. It just seemed like I had an insurmountable amount of work to be accomplished, and nothing seemed to be going my way. Well, as every lovely lady knows, the most conspicuous component of a stellar Fall wardrobe are the shoes, obviously. Needless to say, I spent the greater part of my already lackadaisical day fantasizing of shoes. Luckily for me, this Fall is packed with a colorful assortment of footwear in contrasting textures, patterns, heights, and shapes.

While I typically like to purchase the fundamental pieces of my footwear wardrobe in the off-season (How I acquired my most coveted black leather boots at an extra 80% in March, which stayed neatly packed in the box until this September), I’m always on the hunt during the in-season for the trendier pieces. These soles can be tricky to shop for when you’re on a budget, especially since they may only be actually considered trendy for one season. I have a hard time justifying spending all of my chips on a pair of swanky neon stilettos, which is why I opt for cheaper alternatives of my favorites when it comes to the trendy pieces that change from season to season. Here are my favorite footwear trends that are so right now for Fall:

Color Blocking. This trend has been around for a few seasons, but this Fall, color blocked shoes are all the rage. We can thank Gwyneth Paltrow for rocking Christian Louboutin’s ‘Futura’ booties while performing during the 2011 Grammy’s for making us all drool over the multicolored shoe trend. Since I do not have an extra $1095 laying around, and these shoes have been sold out for months, I scoured my sources for a fun alternative that is still funky and right on trend. The magenta velvet and cobalt ostrich color-block booties that I carry in my store combine the best of two trends, mixing color and texture to create a piece of art for your feet! Better yet, they are only $41.63!
Animal Print. I love that animal print is still all the rage right now, and it doesn’t look to be going anywhere! I saw so many divas rocking their leopard print skirts and tops during Fashion Week a few weeks back, and even the runway was packed with animal prints for spring! A tiny kitten heel is a subtle way to incorporate a pop of this trend into any outfit this Fall. If leopard isn’t your thing, try snakeskin and python prints. There are tons of shoes out this fall, from pumps, to boots, to loafers that will rock your socks off.
Smoking Slippers. Goodbye, ballet flats. I can’t say that I’ll miss you. I’ve never been a fan of frou-frou things, so I’ve always hated the dainty little look of ballet flats. I especially dislike the ones adorned with those horrid fabric flowers glued to the toe, or worse yet, bows. It is obviously a little difficult to wear heels for every event in life, especially the ones that require ample walking, so I welcome this new style of slipper with open arms. Based off of the classic menswear loafer, these stylish little numbers are adorned in lavish fabrics such as velvet, bright colors, animal prints, glitter, and studs this Fall! Wear these with literally anything, from your favorite skinny jeans, to trousers, to this season’s maxi skirts and dresses.
Laces, Buckles, & Studs. Rocker girl looks are still creeping around this Fall, keeping the 90’s grunge theme around a tad longer. To update it this season, pair an edgy boot similar to this one from my store with a girly dress and some patterned tights. To get the most of of this shoe, pair it with everything from skinny jeans to the long sleeve maxi dresses that are so huge right now. When you walk, just a small hint of your bad girl swagger will show with each step. Throw on a leather jacket to balance your act, and you will be one nasty gal (in a good way).
Wedges. More comfortable and just as sky high as stilettos, wedge booties are definitely a trend worth purchasing. They look amazing under this seasons wide legs, chic over skinny jeans, and drool-worthy when paired with tights and a mini skirt. These are a must have trend this Fall. While I opted for the extreme leopard version, a more subdued gray, burgundy suede pair will keep you right on trend if you aren’t ready to take a walk on the wild side.

Sweater School

There’s no doubt that the coolest thing for me about the dropping temperatures this time of year is the hunt for Fall’s hottest sweaters. I love the hunt for the vintage silhouettes and patterns that are taking over the fashion world this season. And nothing makes me smile more than walking through the quaint, tree lined towns of our area where the sidewalks are covered with vibrantly colored fallen leaves, for some fall shopping. I love that our area has so much to offer in terms of downtown shopping, and while you may have to travel to different towns depending on what you’re looking for, each small downtown area has a certain niche of their own. After all, who wants to spend the last few months of bearable temperatures in a mall? This week, I went on a hunt for some thrift store finds to mix with some of the fall fashion that I carry in my shop. I’m all about layering this Fall- it’s functional and stylish, and who can honestly argue with staying warm and looking cool at the same time? Here are some of my rules on how to wear knits this Fall:

Oversized. There are multiple ways to wear an oversized sweater this Fall. The easiest, and most flattering way to wear an oversized sweater is to pair it with something fitted on the bottom. Try to skip the leggings, however. I know, I know, they’re comfy and easy to wear, and expand along with your waistline over the holidays, but please save them for sick days as often as possible. I’m a sucker for a good pair of leggings too, but the days of leggings are over, thankfully. Instead, pair your larger knits with a pair of skinny jeans in a color or dark wash, or wear your baggy sweaters with a mini skirt of pair of shorts layered over a pair of opaque tights. If you are a slim build, get creative with your larger sweaters, and wear them with a maxi skirt or wide leg pant. Be sure to wear heels to lengthen your legs if you do try this trend, and stick to a fitted jacket on top to balance your frame!
Cropped. Cropped sweaters pack just as much punch as their oversized counterparts this season. The easiest way to wear a cropped sweater is to choose a crew neck sweater in a loose knit that has a slouchy fit. Layer it on over a contrasting blouse. Yes, blouse. To pull this look off, choose a button up blouse with a fold over collar (buttoned all the way up, so you don’t look like a hussy, as grandma would say). For an easy start, try a pale pink button up blouse under a camel colored cropped sweater. To spice things up, choose a patterned blouse!
Cardigans. I have always loved cardigans and have rarely been able to part with them no matter their condition, which is why I’m so excited they’ve made such a comeback this Fall (not that they’ve ever been out, in my opinion)! If you don’t feel like spending mega bucks on a new closet full of mustard colored cardis this fall (which is my favorite color this season, by the way), head to a thrift store or your mom or dad’s closet. If your mom’s closet is anything like my mother’s, you could potentially be lost for days, so be sure to tell someone where you’re headed. In fact, you may be able to convince your mom that you would like to help her “clean dad’s closet”. What looks hideous on dad, may just be tomorrow’s ensemble. My favorite cardigans are longer cardis with deep fronts, which look best when paired with a fitted blouse. Chose a blouse with some frill on the front, which will look amazing peeking out of the deep “v” cut of the cardigan. Once again, choose a contrasting color and/or pattern, and be sure to button all the way up! Buttoning all the way up doesn’t mean you can’t have any fun, however. The boldest blouse trends right now have oversized details like large bows on the front, so let loose, girl.
Graphic Arts. Start gearing up for your holiday ugly sweater parties a little early this year. Graphic patterned sweaters make a bold statement any day of the week. Look for sweaters that are color-blocked in neutral shades like black, gray and white, and pair them with a pair of black skinnies, some scrunchy socks, and wedge booties. Layer on a black leather jacket and you’ll be the coolest girl who never left the 80’s (but please spare us the teased hair).
Pattern Mixing. Pattern mixing applies to everything right now, and sweaters are no different. You can mix patterns in many ways regarding sweaters. Try out different looks to find what you like to mix. Some ideas? Try mixing a floral print blouse with a striped sweater, or try pairing bold plaid pants with a striped sweater! Let your imagination run, and try out options that you wouldn’t normally think of. The easiest way to get started without clashing is to try different patterns that are in the same color families. For example, try different patterns in a singular shade of red, which is a super hot color this season. The easiest way to accomplish this is to head to a department store or specialty store that’s already done the color thing for you. Most lines will carry separates in the same color family that will coordinate together to create a complete look. Also, don’t be afraid to ask the sales associate! They can provide an unbiased opinion on what looks good on you, should be able to assist you in creating a look that you may never have thought on your own!

Vintage Tease, Please.

The beloved T-shirt. Can any of us honestly say that we don’t own way too many of them? Like denim, T-shirts are an American staple and part of most of our every day wardrobes, but we haven’t always been so casual. The T-shirt, which got its name due to the garment's shape being in the form of a “T”, was once solely an undergarment worn by men in uniform. Believe it or not, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the T-shirt became a mainstream piece in the fashion world, with actors like James Dean, Marlon Brando, and John Wayne wearing their “underwear” on television.

T-shirts took off from this point forward, leaving an imprint on the fashion world due to their low cost, comfort, low maintenance, and versatility. They have become a world of self expression and advertisement, with some of the designs seemingly burned into the pop culture world forever (How many times have you seen an “I <3 NY” T-shirt?).

I, of course, love my T-shirts just like everyone else out there. I do, however, believe there is a way to wear T-shirts that can still be fashionable and a little more polished (i.e., there are ways to wear T-shirts that don’t include sweat pants or those hideous flannel pajama pants which are meant strictly for mopping the floor or on extreme sick days). Believe it, ladies, t-shirts do not need to be worn with sneakers! With the layered look still all the rage this season, you can maximize your wardrobe by taking your t-shirts with you from Summer throughout the Fall season. These suggestions also go for all of the men out there, too, who typically have entire closets full of T-shirts. Well I’m all for options, but your color coded rack of cotton crew necks is really not useful if you are just throwing them on with the same old jeans and sneakers day after day. It’s time to get a little creative!

Blouse It. Pair a plain text t-shirt under a cropped blazer as a casual alternative to a blouse that’s a little more personal. To pull this look off, be sure to tuck your tee into a high waisted pair of pants, or a skirt with tights. If you opt for a text t-shirt, skip the nasty quotes and stick to a positive one word version. Make your own by drawing or printing block letters onto a piece of card stock. Cut the bold print letters out, leaving a stencil behind. Be sure to put a piece of cardboard inside the t-shirt, to separate the front and back of the tee. Place the stencil on the front of your plain colored t-shirt and spray paint with a color of your choice! Voila! A simple, customized DIY tee. Try a fun word that describes something about your personality or something that you believe in. I also recommend getting a dictionary out and knowing the actual meaning of a word before you go ahead and paint it on the front of your shirt, please.
Opt for Artsy Prints. Printed T-shirts have become a little less generic and a lot more artsy lately. Pick a t-shirt that represents your artistic side, or lack there of. I try to carry a decent selection of artsy, graphic prints in my store most of the time, since they are super comfortable and can be dressed up or down. Pair them with jeans and a pair of boots, or dress them up with a skirt and tights for an edgier look! Dudes, try to stick with the jeans and boots look. If you’re feeling super creative, try your hand at some graphic art on the computer and iron on your own creation, or get some paint pens and sharpies out on a rainy day to recreate an old white tee! www.threadless.com has a plethora of artist designs to choose from. You can even submit your own designs for a chance to be featured on the site and earn tons of green!
Steal your Boyfriend’s. Go ahead and be a little edgy. Steal your boyfriends favorite band T-shirt and throw it on over a pair of your old skinny jeans from last season for a look that is completely rocker glam! To keep it in line with this Fall, try to wear a pair of bright skinnies (think red!) and a black blazer over the tee.
Get your Granny On. Once again, I recommend you head over to Grandma’s attic, this time in search for some old school plaid. What’s hot right now? Retro plaid prints in navy, orange, and red, and of course the classic black & white patterns. If you’re lucky enough to score some pants and blazers for free, you can spend a little on taking them to the tailors to have them fitted for a modern silhouette. Try a funky striped T-Shirt under a plaid blazer, or a vintage look T-shirt with some black & white tweed pants. Keep in mind that mixing plaids is tough. I would stick with a solid counterpart to your plaid. If you opt for the bold blazer, wear a simple black pant, jean, or complimentary bold color found somewhere in the plaid. Likewise, don’t get too busy on top if you are wearing loud trousers. This look translates into menswear also. Have we already forgotten “The Rules of a Modern Gentleman: The GQ Fall 2011 Trend Report”? The geezer look was one of my favorites, and I specifically remember the D&G plaid blazer paired with a coca-cola graphic top and corduroy pants. Translation: Raid grandpas closet also, and go home with some new fall options for your dude to wear over his boring T-shirt as well.

Whatever your style, t-shirts are a staple that aren’t going out of style anytime soon. Remember, it’s OK to be comfy and stylish at the same time, so try out these way to wear your tees to get the most out of your t-shirts and stay on top of the Fall fashion trends.

Pumpkin Spiced Mani

I know that it seems like just yesterday that I riddled your brain with sorbet colored finger and toe options, but the seasons are a changing quickly, regardless of whether it feels more like spring than fall. While the seasons are changing, we must not forget to transition our polish shades with our wardrobes. Nail polish is one of my favorite fashion statements for a variety of reasons. First of all, it’s inexpensive for the most part. While you may find yourself splurging occasionally on a really fantastic Chanel shade that no one else could possibly make, there are typically tons of options for cheaper varieties of other shades. Next, it can make or break an outfit. If you’re like me, and nearly always caught in black throughout the fall and winter, the easiest way to spice up your look is through your polish. Finally, treat it as if it were an accessory. These days, nails can be bedazzled, metallic, and adorned as if they were a piece of jewelry themselves. Even if you are running out the door ten minutes behind schedule, your polish can make you feel pulled together regardless of whether you remembered your beloved jewels.

This season, it’s all about elegance, from metallic hues, to muted, milky shades, to brazen, spicy jewel tones.

Pumpkin Spice: Since I’m pretty monotonous about my obsession with all things pumpkin flavored (including the amazing pumpkin flavored milk shakes currently located at Independence Honda on Rt 11), I think it’s safe to say that I also love pumpkin colored nail polish. It’s actually more of a rust color than a pumpkin shade that I’m digging, but for the purpose of their resemblance in my mind to tasty fall treats I will continue to call this shade pumpkin spice. Try Essie Nail Polish in Very Structured, $8 at essie.com or Peachy Parrot by Orly (check out all of Orly’s Birds of a Feather line for fall).
Military Greens: Pastel and neon greens were all the rage this spring, and fall keeps the trend alive, just a bit darker and more mysterious. Try Chanel Nail Colour in Peridot, $25. For a cheaper alternative, I’m digging Rags To Riches by Rimmel, $3.99 in drugstores.
Navy Seal: I love blue nail polish almost as much as I love pumpkin pie. Contrary to popular belief, you can wear navy polish with all black if you do it right. Try it out with some gold accessories and a navy scarf to match, and I guarantee you’ll have a change of heart. My favorite is OPI’s Russian Navy, $8.50. Also try Emerald City Revlon Nail Enamel, $5.99 (more of a blue-green), available at CVS, and Big Smoke, by Butter London, $14 at Ulta Beauty.
Red Siren: There are a few red trends for fall, from full blown ruby red, to a more subdued, shimmery berry version, to some with hints of orange. I love a daring red polish such as Scarlett O’Hara by Essie, $8. Essie also makes a fantastic classic red shade called Really Red, available at drugstores.
Posh Plum: Another alternative to the black polish that we’ve seen season after season, purple shades are a great way to add a little color to your all black wardrobe. For some shimmer, I swipe on China Glaze’s CG in the City, $7 at Sally Beauty Supply. A solid matte plum shade to try is Solemate by Essie. It’s creamy and rich, making it the perfect date for your fingers.
Industrial Revolution: Browns and grays are yet another solid choice instead of boring black polish. These shades create a polished manicure, and are much less severe than their darker compadres. MAC’s Coco Clay is a warm chocolate shade that will transform your cuticles into milky chocolatey goodness, $15, www.maccosmetics.com. Espresso by Revlon Nail Enamel is a great deep shade of brown, $5.99 at CVS. For a lighter gray-brown shade, try Mochacino by Essie, $8.00 at CVS.
Bling Ring: Last but not least, swipe on some hot metallics this season for an instant glamourous look. Butter London’s The Old Bill is a great bronze shade that I can’t wait to try. Versailles by NARS, is a champagne gold that’s super light and chic, $17 at Sephora. For a cheap silvery shade, test out Wet N Wild’s Hallucinate, $1.99, and Steel Her Heart by Revlon, $4.99, both at CVS.

Fall Foliage Lip Color!

Lately, I’ve been totally amping up my makeup game, or trying at least. Most fashionistas know that your pretty little face is the icing on the cake, meaning accessorizing a Fall wardrobe must not stop at picking the perfect pair of wedge booties. This fall, there are a ton of fun makeup trends that can help amp up any outfit, from graphic eyeliner looks to channel your inner artist, to metallic eyelids - the luxe, modern take on a smokey eye, to in-your-face spider eyelashes. The look that has me in a frenzy however, is bold, matte lips. Perhaps I like this look because of my mainly black Fall and Winter wardrobe, or quite possibly it’s my love for old Hollywood glamour. Either way, there’s no denying that a brightly painted pout is the way to go this Fall, and I can’t think of a better way to kiss summer goodbye.

I know that many of us struggle with how to select the perfect color when going bold. If you’re someone who insists on following the rules, generally cool skin tones will look best in bold lip colors with blue undertones (think raspberry shades), and warm complexions will benefit from trying shades with a little more of an orange base. I tend to not get too caught up in these rules, especially since I swear I have jaundiced skin every time I hold my arm up to someone else’s to compare skin tone. Instead, I go somewhere where I can try a few shades on. You really only need to find one fantastic bold lipstick to get you through most of fall, so it pays to head to a department store or beauty store for this one. By being able to try on multiple shades, it’s easy to see what compliments you, and a sales associate can most likely help give an unbiased opinion on the matter. While you may spend a little more on that one tube of lipstick, you’re guaranteed to like it and wear it, unlike the three that were purchased at the drug store, all of which you could quite possible hate.

If you’re not typically a lipstick wearer, you can still get in on the trend without staining your lips fire engine red. While I love the deep merlots, cool berry shades, hot fucshia lips, and brick red tones, I do know that bold lipstick is not something that everyone feels comfortable in (don’t knock it unless you try it, however). If you aren’t a fan of leaving your mark all over your glass wear, opt for a beige nude lip. It can make just as much of a statement (if not more), and will be a smooth transition for those of us who are too timid to take on a daring lip color this fall.

How To: Bold Lips 

Anytime you are making your lips the focal point you need to show them some love. Exfoliate your lips with a simple DIY scrub of olive oil and sugar to remove dead, dry skin. Remove the scrub completely with a damp towel. This crucial step will allow for a smoother application and help ensure your lipstick lasts longer.
Gone are the days of matching your lip pencil to your lipstick. Instead, reach for a lip pencil that matches your natural lip color (try M.A.C. Lip Pencil in Subculture) so you can wear it with any shade of lipstick you have. Following your natural shape, line and fill in with your lip pencil. This gives the lipstick something to adhere to and increases staying power.
For maximum color payoff, apply your lipstick directly from the tube (save the lip brush for any detail work in the corners of your mouth). Wherever you first apply your lipstick is where you will deposit the most product, start at the center of your bottom lip. Extend the color to the edges of your mouth, top and bottom, and carefully blot your lips together.
To further increase your lipsticks longevity, take a coffee filter and use it to blot your lipstick. This simple step helps push the color pigments into the skin to create a stain. Coffee filters don’t leave unattractive lint the way tissues do (they’re also great for wiping down mascara wands and absorbing oil and perspiration on your t-zone in a pinch). Once you have blotted your lips, carefully apply another coat of lipstick.
With bold lip colors mistakes are bound to happen. Fret not, clean up with Q-tips soaked in makeup remover to remove any errant stray marks. To polish and tighten the edges of your lips, trace a concealer brush dipped in concealer around your lips to cover any imperfections. Follow this up with a Q-tip dipped in your face powder, if needed, to complete your bold lip look.

Conquering New York Fashion Week

I went. I saw. I conquered. New York Fashion Week, that is. In case you still haven’t figured it out, I get uber excited about all things fashion, and getting to view Michael Kors Spring 2012 Collection first hand was the icing on my fashion cake. I got to spend a few days last week in a beautiful apartment in the Clinton/Midtown West area of Manhattan, a central location which was walking distance to Hell’s Kitchen, Times Square, the Garment District, and the Theatre District. I had quite a few exciting days, and made some memories that will stick with me for a very, very long time. I always feel invigorated after returning from a trip like this, with an abundance of ideas, new found inspiration, and an excitement for the change of seasons.

First and foremost, while I was not situated in the front row (where I obviously thought I belonged), I was happily planted on a balcony seating area conveniently located above one of my beloved fashion icons, Rachel Zoe. Yes, she had Roger by her side, and yes, she looked utterly fabulous sporting her signature oversized shades and a wide brimmed hat. I typically would never be caught gawking at anyone, celebrity or not, but this was an exception. In fact, it seemed that she was what everyone was gawking at, and she was soon engulfed by flashbulbs and microphones, without reappearing until everyone was told to be seated for the start of the show (the whispers, pointing fingers, and flashbulbs continued right up until the actual start of the show).

As the lights dimmed, a boisterous violin blasted a raw version of Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, and Rolling in the Deep. As the excitement continued to build, the first look emerged, it was apparent that the theme would be reminiscent of an African safari adventure meets Army Sniper. Looks were a collaboration of of earth tonal natural fabrics such as leather, cashmere, and cotton were apparent throughout the collection. Hues of red, olive, burnt orange, and mustard were sprinkled in the show in the form of tie dyed frocks and monotone separates. Bold leopard and zebra prints, as well as some python skins set off the whole safari look, with some audaciously feathered dresses and pants thrown in for good measure. Everything in the collection was so raw, similar to the tunes that were blasting in the tent, that it seemed the pieces were each handmade in a South African village. Each piece was a delicate reminder of the simplistic beauty that fashion can have, when it’s not overpowered by all of the glitz.

Where is fashion headed for Spring 2012? Most of the looks from all of the designers I viewed had one common theme- simplicity. While they may have punched it up in the details and the color department, the silhouettes were one extreme or the other, either streamlined and tailored, or fluid and organic, making for very classic looks. Maybe it’s a sign of the seemingly impending simpler times that lay ahead, or maybe it’s just an ongoing recycling of looks from the 60’s and 70’s. Either way, I’m ecstatic. While I do love me an edgy outfit every now and then, I could seriously do without having to see people wearing an entire bottle of gel in their hair and every ring in the jewelry box on their fingers.
