nominated for Downtown Brooklyn: It's The Moment - click the image to Vote!

And then I found myself surfing and stumble on to the Starbucks Love Project by BBDO (click to Vote)

And then I found myself face to face with the inspiration for the Love project....a group of music loving documentary film producers who have created "Playing for Change" as seen here at the Starbucks Leadership Conference.

and then I stumble on to more Change and more GOOD WORKS and...

...the reminder that Leadership and Change is inspired from within!

Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint is the latest "Taste" initiative to combine great foods, drink and a cause.

With our support last year - the Northside Town Hall developed a fundraising concept that could "bring community to the table" in the trendy neighborhood of Williamsburg Brooklyn. We supported their desire to have a capital campaign initiative that could be an annual event beyond the usual "dinner". We focused on how to bring as many varied partners to the table and tap into the ever growing food movement in their community. Our services were the building blocks - from the ideation to an event business "plan", which began the implementation of the crucial pieces to pull the project off. With the leadership of a volunteer team of dedicated organizers, and community businesses, they have come up with an event that should deliver great success!

Successful fundraising whether a community project or a national non-profit campaign have key items in common - regardless of the size and stage of the event. FUN and imaginative events require collaboration - what is now referred to as "crowd sourcing" but what many have always known to be community organizing 101. Allow your initiative to take on a life of its own while maintaining the objective - this way the creativity flows, and finally as soon as it is over pull up your sleeves and get ready for the next one - it will be here sooner than you think.

So save the date May 16th 12 - 4 PM Rain or Shine and come out....and Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint while supporting the collaboration of community, business and the cause!

Nonprofits are in competition....but donors have expectation just like any consumer and 2.0 giving is changing the way we connect with those in need.

As I sat in the SXSW workshop Will Kiva Kill Your Non-Profit? Donations 2.0 I was interested to hear the perspectives and read the tweets coming out with the hash tag #donate2.

The panel consisted of Beacon Fire, Kiva, Donors Choose, Opportunity International and Amnesty International. Some think of donor to recipient as a stream lining of beuracray. Others look at 2.0 as an "on ramp" of creating a stronger relationship with their non-profit and its overall services. With organizations like Amnesty, focused on policy, 2.0 giving can be a bit more complex. Others wonder if this anonymous giving and adoption to direct recipients does away with the necessary organizations that are fighting for policy change and not just a band-aid on an issue.

However, with the internet creating more and more ways to give and brands getting on board the giving train making immediate and intimate connections is becoming more and more revelant and prevelant. I just came across We Get To Give, a Chicago based brand marketing and giving initiative that share makes it so easily.

But back to our Kiva workshop...with 2.0 giving. In 1 hour the audience created a tinyurl that matched a Donor Choose program with the #donate2 hash tag on twitter and success was achieved. An Austin Texas Title 1 (high poverty rated) school music program received enough funding to buy the necessary equipment needed to record the sounds of music the kids are making. This is 2.0 giving!

Kiva - Woodward...."The post modern philanthropist aims to evaluate investments by selecting from the wealth of information available to him in the Attention Age, prioritizing the needs and the data from or related to his community. How can I use this to be smarter and better?"

Tech changing the non-profit world....giving, getting and making things happen.

The Cause LAB - the first annual SXSW event on Good Works. What am I learning in real time while sitting here? Share Our Strength and Feed America partnered with We Can End This.com...fighting to end hunger in America as the first organized discussion at SXSW on Cause Campaigns. A room full of folks called the "smartest minds" in America...this is the interactive tech lab.

All day long on the first day of the interactive component of the festival, the brains are getting together...and so are brands. Brands are learning more and more the "next generation" is triple bottom line focused. The Cause Lab sponsors of We Can End This.com include...Conagra, Tyson, and Pepsi. So how do we, and they make this work...really work for the good?

We broke out into working teams, sitting around tables, focused on a subject - ours being community action, and free-styled actionable items. How do we create new affective programs or make those in existence better? Here is my idea. CSA participants buy a seasonal subscription for a food insecure family. We can start to solve other issues with this one action....deliver healthy fresh foods, support local farmers, create community and fight the stigma associated with proverty by creating an intimate experience between two families.

The issues is raised by the Conagra Foundation rep...what about shame, not wanting my neighbor to know about my circumstance, or communities where fresh foods do not exist on a seasonal basis? Does this question prohibit the opportunity or do we follow Family to Family as a model? Solving hunger should and needs to include nutritious and fresh foods.

Other ideas that came out of our "brainy" storming session....

Restaurant credits, tax credits for individuals who support a family or a no-throw away, recycling mentality around food

Creating caring and respectful communities - giving voices to those who are food insecure to also help solve the problem

Using existing infrastructures - help support where the existing programs are to create a better program

Test a social network where individuals who are in need sign up for food requests anonymously and a delivery is made from someone who wants to buy for them or is there a place for them to pick up....

Create a mobile element so that they can buy on the run for someone using text to text...

Restaurants and food retail rated on social services around ending hunger.....partner with Zagats

Weekly community meals....that include the donors of service and food supply with those in receipt of the food, again finding ways to eliminate the shame of poverty

Gleaning?

Pre-consumption ideas....

If you have an idea get in contact with us at Good Works Work...also do your home work and find ways to support the importance of ending hunger in your communities. Log on to Goodzuma, We Can End This, Share Our Strength and Feed America.
New York City Homeless Services Hope 2010 took place on Monday night - January 25, 2010. I had signed up some time ago as I was drawn into the PR campaign and thought the work of counting the homeless to be extremely relevant - especially with the current economic crisis of 10% unemployment. So I took to the streets with a team of three other volunteers.

The training took place from 11:00 - 12:00 in the auditorium of Brooklyn College. Two of the four people on our team had participated in the count in previous years, one an employee of DHS (Department of Homeless Services). We also had on our team a 28 year old Jamaican man who is currently living in the shelter system. Throughout the evening he and I spoke of his circumstance and the frustration he was feeling while trying to receive services that would not categorize him as either mentally ill or drug addicted, but actually aid him in finding work and eventually a home for himself. He had recently been diagnosed as an epileptic and may eventually qualify for SSI benefits. He and I also talked about the frustration that the case workers must face. With upwards of 40,000 individuals in the NYC shelter system on any given night the city tries to stress the need to treat those in the most vulnerable of situations with respect, as repeatedly noted on the web pages of NYC Department of Homelessness. In turn the individuals in the system are required to develop a plan that will eventually lead to independent living. I am sure cynicism runs high as a percentage of the population is living a life of perpetual homelessness. The reasons, certainly many and more often than not a relationship between mental health issues and the inability to secure an independent living situation. Homelessness is not easy for either party, the counselors and those setting policy or the individual facing possibly the most humiliating situation in life.

We walked the assigned street sections, three in total, from 12:15 to approximately 3:30 AM. We were requested to speak to every person we came across - with a key question about homelessness. We were not to speak with any obvious individual working outside; i.e. Con Edison or a phone service person. We were not to speak with people on private property either. The area of Canarsie we covered rand from Avenue N - Seaview and roughly 89th Street to 108th Street. There were blocks in the 90s we were not assigned. This is a predominantly residential area. We actually surveyed two individuals, both who we determined were not homeless. For the remainder of the evening we shared stories of why we were wanting to do "Good Works" and bits and pieces of ourselves. Surveying areas such as Canarsie is suppose to confirm that this is a non-homeless populated section of the city. I questioned the use of our time as volunteers, and the limited city services. and wondered were there enough individuals out there surveying the actual homeless?

On my ride home, trying to navigate closed train-lines and the early morning services changes, I found the homeless. Our NYC subway system had at least one individual in every car, in some cars there were three or four, and this repeated on all three trains I took home between 4:00 - 5:30AM. I held my Hope 2010 t-shirt and wondered did I get duped with this campaign and who was it actually serving?

The count of the homeless - a sort of homeless census, has been under much criticism by the Coalition for the Homeless as well as respected academics in the area of policy for the homeless. Read the recent article by Gabe Pressman - January 25th as he too went out the night of NYC Hope 2010.

Power In Collective Thinking...

I've mentioned my great respect for one of the first social entrepreneurs, Anita Roddick and the Body Shop. I remember when I first read about her ideas of corporate structure and her goals...I was moved to tears. She cared so much and not just about her own agenda of being a business woman, but how would she also lift up communities around her. It was a novel idea at the time that changed the business landscape forever. Yes, there were reported bumps with the structure and profitability, and then the final sale to L'Oreal, but Dame Anita Roddick persevered and set the stage in one of the most challenging industries of consumer products to have a business with a conscience.

So the other day, as I was perusing the web looking for new leaders, I found 24 year old Elliot Bisnow the founder of the Summit Series. Hey, when the president of the United States wants to meet with you on business in America that's no small request. See the article - A Story of Optimism from American Express OPEN Forum. Again, whenever I read these things I always wonder what the old boys are thinking? It is such an exciting time in commerce to see that without cajoling and regulation there is a committed movement that knows not only the marketing value, but recognizes the responsibility of giving with each item they are putting into the market. It just makes sense...by lifting others we all succeed and that too makes my heart well up. It also looks like all of these businesses are having a lot of fun too!

Take a look at the Summit Series and see for yourself...

George Clooney, Wyclef Jean and MTV leveraged the support of the broadcast and digital world as never before in history for the conceived Hope for Haiti Now telethon. As reported by Staci D. Kramer for paidContent.org, "How far we have come since Live 8...."

Across two countries, the U.S and Canada, two telethons took place Friday January 22, 2010. Reports from CBC of Canada state upwards of $16MM was raised by our north of the boarder neighbors - through English based Canada for Haiti and French based Ensemble for Haiti. A secondary pledge was made from the Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, that the Canadian Government will match dollar for dollar raised up to $50MM.

Telethon numbers are open through the weekend 1-877-99-HAITI, and downloads from iTunes are available, with 100% of proceeds going to the Hope for Haiti Now benefit.

Hollywood is on the Good Works Work media bandwagon! The newly created Tonic will espouse about the benefits of goodwill and commerce - giving further rise and attention to the mainstreaming phenomenon of social entrepreneurs. With a board of creators that reads as a who's who in founders and funding of Good Works Work'in - Jennifer and Peter Buffett, Chris Blackwell, Donna Karan, Walt Freese, Whitney Williams, Rob Broggi, Ellen and David Siminoff + Kelly Cutrone, Tonic has some strong legs to stand upon. O.K Kelly Cultrone? Although I understand the television enticement of drama with Kell on Earth, Ms. Cultrone seems little about all the warm and fuzzy. But let's look at her post on Tonic....and yeah there is no better name in PR to draw the evermore necessary attention to getting Good Works done! Thanks to Pankaj Shah for coming up with another Good Works outlet!
How terrifying to be living in such desperation day in an day out, and then to have the world around you crumble. As I laid in my bed last night I felt unsteady in my comfort, knowing there were thousands of human beings without the most basic of life necessities - water, food and shelter.

So what can we all do? Remember as the tragic circumstance changes from an emergency to rebuilding that your help is still going to be needed. It is so easy for us to flit from one shinny object to another - likes bees to the flowers in the Spring. Our short attention span and the convenience of our lives allow us to forget the need to stick with something long after the lights are no longer shining on it. Find creative ways to engage your own community, not just for the immediate but for the long term. Give to organizations that will monitor the services and supplies to be sure that your aid is getting to the most vulnerable. Engage with others on how to rebuild. Don't just criticize - move forward on how to see the uniqueness of the Hatian people, and support them in a desire to provide and flourish. This will sometimes feel like an impossible task...just as the dreams of Martin Luther King certainly felt and still feel impossible to many, but to give up is not an option. A small ripple makes big change....go to CNN Impact your World for a comprehensive list of organizations to reach out to.

Volcolm, a very popular youth brand, has team up with the National Coalition for the Homeless and is gathering your gently worn jeans. Go by your local Volcom store to find out about details on how long the campaign will last...see the Volcom Give Back blog page for their ongoing campaign of Good Works Working.

Along the same lines, last March Ann Taylor Loft and Goodwill teamed up to bring some gently loved quality product to the racks of Goodwill. Every customer who brought by a piece of clothing received a $15.00 off coupon on your next Ann Taylor Loft purchase. With a drop off at local Loft stores, the Goodwill was stocked this past holiday season with wonderful product and helped shoppers on a budget. Let's watch and see if this partnership continues....

This past 6 - 8 months there has been a proliferation of "Good Works" campaigns! First, through a sweeping passing on June 4, 2009 the Kennedy / Hatch National Service bill, we reaffirmed our continued commitment to community "good works" across the United States. Keep an eye on what is happening for 2010!

So, now more than ever we see "Good Works" on the airways, in the news and most importantly as a combination of effort through business and citizens...

The likes of Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop, and Yvon Chouninard of Patagonia, Toms Shoes sets the bar in the new age of social entrepreneurs.

Such practices are becoming the norm, so if your not on the wagon trail you may find your company lost on a generation that expects you to "do good".
The younger male audience can be an ever elusive group to capture. But this campaign was ingenious. KAWS, a very well known and admired graffiti artist teamed up with Keil’s Since 1851 to produce a KAWS Limited Edition of their ever popular Creme de Corps. 100% of their net profits goes to RxArt. While staying true to their core customer, which has grown accustom to Keil’s giving back, this campaign helps to create relevance with a new audience - young men in their later teens and early 20’s. RxArt works to create an uplifting experience in an often drab and dreary atmosphere of hospitals and clinics.

With an Americacorps placement who helps with administration, and an oven in desperate need of repair, the leadership shapes the menu and direct us. Under their culinary guidance a meal miraculously gets prepared for 80+ people whom otherwise would go hungry. The local polish bakery supplies an apple cake the size of a small card table, pies are dropped off by Egg another local restaurant, cakes are baked by neighbors with butter icing and sprinkles for the New Year and the local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) helps with fresh produce. All of us short order amateur cooks gather to prep, stir, cut and on occasion taste and lay the spread out. It is very satisfying food for the soul.

Rumor had it that once again the Greenpoint Reformed Church Soup Kitchen would get celebrity support. Patti Smith to have $100.oo goodie bags at her concert at the Bowery Ball Room with proceeds to go to help the folks in Greenpoint!
