Event Description: The General Assembly, recognizing that genuine multilingualism promotes unity in diversity and international understanding, has proclaimed 2008 the International Year of Languages. Acting without a vote, the Assembly, also recognising that the United Nations pursues multilingualism as a means of promoting, protecting and preserving diversity of languages and cultures globally, emphasised the paramount importance of the equality of the Organization’s six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).

The International Year of Languages is a perfect focus for a Living Project!

What is a Living Project?
Living Projects are inspired by the work of the educators in Reggio Emilia. This four-day long, intensive program will enable teachers to
•	experience negotiated curriculum from the view point of the learner
•	increase their own music skills and processes
•	enhance their capacity to observe the learning process
•	document their own learning
•	present their learning to others.

We begin the professional learning process with reflections on individuals’ own experiences of music and investigate our combined experience, knowledge and skills. With the support of a music specialist and facilitator we build our knowledge and understandings of learning, teaching and assessment through an action learning process that results in the creation of a CDRom that documents individuals’ learning, the group learning, and the teaching and learning processes that supported them.

Living Projects are suitable for all teachers who are negotiating curriculum with students.

Who are the Facilitators?
Susan Margaret is a practising musician and music teacher. Susan is passionate about music and the ability of everyone to create and perform music. Susan is an accomplished instrumental music teacher, currently working in 17 schools in the metropolitan area. She plays clarinet, saxophone, recorder and piano, is a solo and choral singer, has conducted choral groups, bands and orchestras, and arranges and composes music. In additions to all of this, Susan has a thorough knowledge of an outcomes-focused approach to teaching and learning and a range of instantaneous ways of identifying students’ levels of achievement.

Marie Martin is an experienced professional development provider, working with teachers as they examine their philosophy and classroom practice and investigate their teaching and learning programs. Marie’s interest in the educational project in Reggio Emilia is part of her life-time focus on learning.
Event Description: Conversations need space. And time. Conversations need support.

Some conversations arise spontaneously. Others require preparation. Still others are facilitated by a speaker or a set of focus questions.

Conversations at 272 Oxford Street provide opportunities for people from schools, organisations, families and the wider community to come together to meet and share their ideas and enthusiasm. Conversations at 272 are held from 4:30 pm on Sunday afternoon.
