document.write('
Let's talk about Wednesday's episode of "Lost," "What Kate Does," below. All my other "Lost" coverage is here.

Just a couple of bits of housekeeping first: Look for another podcast from me and Ryan McGee from Zap2it.com's Guide to "Lost" on Monday or Tuesday. Last week's podcast post also contains information about an ongoing effort to aid Haiti (and how "Lost" fans can win swag for helping) and there is a charity auction going on here.

OK, on with the speculation.

In last week's post and in the "Lost" podcast I did with Ryan McGee, the idea of connections between the two "Lost" timelines came up a lot.

And though "What Kate Does" felt, in many ways, like a putting-things-into-motion episode, it also began exploring that idea of connections between the timelines. Perhaps the timelines aren't necessarily connected in a mystical or esoteric way.

Perhaps what "Lost" is driving at is that a person's essence and outlook is what it is, no matter where that person is in time and space. Maybe Kate is essentially the same person with the same instincts, no matter where she is. She usually has a strong desire to flee whatever circumstances she finds herself in, but she also has a core of humanity and compassion that allows her to stick with with someone who needs help.

And in both those timelines, it's Claire that Kate is trying to help. That's can't be a coincidence.

Now, which timeline is the "right" one, or the main one? That becomes a more complicated question. Because in what I've come to think of as the main storyline -- the island storyline -- Aaron is not with his mother. Is that why Claire appears to be the new Rousseau? Both Claire and Rousseau were parted from their children, and spent years in the jungle -- going mad? Or what, exactly?

In what I've been calling the "Safe Landing" timeline, Claire appears to waver about giving up Aaron even before she meets the prospective adoptive parent(s). And soon she's very set on keeping Aaron (whom she spontaneously gives the same name her baby got on the island). We don't know for sure that she will get to stay with and raise Aaron, but remember the prophecy that Aaron should not be "raised by another"? If Claire's luck holds in the the Safe Landing timeline, he will get to stay with his mother.

So is that preferable? Or will Aaron somehow end up with (or without) his mother in both timelines? And which scenario is the "right" one, or the better one? As with so much this season, it's too soon to tell.

But no matter what, Claire will still have the creepiest obstetrician ever -- Ethan Goodspeed. As a child on the island, he helped take Alex from Rousseau, and in the Safe Landings timeline, Ethan, as he did in a previous island-based episode, injected Claire with drugs and was (legitimately, as a doctor) very interested in Claire's child. As we saw last week, the Safe Landing timeline has lots of parallels, but some key differences.

Whatever his motivations in either timeline, I think we can all agree that the "normal" Ethan in the Safe Landing timeline is just as creepy as the "Crazy Eyes" Ethan of the island. He just has that weird vibe.

"What Kate Does" was not purely a Kate-Claire episode, however; we also have another "Man of Science, Man of Faith" moment for Jack. He doesn't believe that Dogen's little pill is going to help Sayid. But will it?

We're still very much in the dark about a lot of things, especially as relates to the Temple folks and what their goals are.

The Temple people are on the side of Jacob, so it would seem -- it would appear that they're loyal to the entity that is doing battle with the Smoke Monster/Locke. So what do they think has gotten into Sayid -- a little bit of Ole Smokey? How would that have happened? If something got into Sayid, didn't it happen in their hot tub -- er, I mean, Pool of Mysterious Boiling Liquid?

Did some Jacob get into Sayid? That was my theory last week -- that what revived Sayid was the transmission of Jacob's spirit/energy/whatever into Sayid during or after the hot tub incident.

But then, if Jacob got into Sayid or is "growing" inside of Sayid, wouldn't that be a good thing, as far as the Temple folks are concerned? Perhaps not.

Yes, Dogen tried to poison Sayid, but do we really know what Sayid is now? In a few weeks (or days) would he rather be dead than morph into something awful? Or will he morph into something far more powerful than Dogen, and Dogen merely wants to knock off a rival? Or maybe Sayid is perfectly fine, and Dogen tortured him and tried to torture him for no real reason.

In any case, for once Jack's stubbornness was a good thing (probably): He prevented Sayid from taking poison and threw Dogen off his game too. Not having "faith" that Dogen was telling the truth was the right call. Probably?

Another big question: How does Claire fit into either timeline? We know that island Claire is strongly associated with Jacob -- she appeared in Jacob's cabin with "Christian Shephard." And we now know that Claire does not appear to be dead in the island timeline --she appears to have morphed into a new version of Rousseau.

If Claire's a cautionary tale for what could happen to Sayid, that's potentially a problem. But we don't really know what drove her to (possibly) become the island's wild woman; again, we'll have to see where this all goes in the final 16 hours of the show.

But I'm going to hold onto one fact in all this: Sayid appeared to be dead for some time, then suddenly he was not dead. Jacob may or may not have had a hand in that -- we just don't know for sure.

Just as I'm questioning which timelne on the show is now the more, well, substantial one (that's the closest translation to the amorphous thought in my head), I'm also questioning some other assumptions I seem to have acquired.

For instance, do we know that Jacob is good? And that SmokeLocke is bad? I guess I'd come to think that the Man In Black/SmokeLocke is not the good guy, and that Jacob (the man in the white shirt on the beach in last year's finale) is sort of the good guy. But if my basic assumptions about these characters or entities turn out to be true, then, well, maybe that's not all that interesting. Surely there's got to be more to the story than "Jacob is optimistic about humanity's potential" and "MIB thinks humans are always going to stay greedy and violent."
True, SmokeLocke manipulated Ben into killing his rival and also messed up Bram and Jacob's other guards real good. SmokeLocke can be very bad news. But I'm starting to wonder, as the writers of the show appear to want us to -- who's really good and who's really bad and will we need to re-think those concepts as they apply to the Others, the Dharma Initiative, Charles Widmore, Ben, SmokeLocke, Jacob and the Losties?

Both the Jack and the Kate storylines moved things forward a little (while prompting a lot more questions), but Sawyer provided the emotional heart of the episode as he grieved for Juliet. Sawyer saying that some on the island "were meant to be alone" may be the saddest thing he's ever said. Terrific work, once again, by Josh Holloway.

I may chime in with further thoughts in comments, but between "Idol" and "Chuck" and various other things, including a sinus cold, it's been a long day. And I'd like to hear what you thought about "What Kate Does," which obviously wasn't as jam-packed as "LA X" but nonetheless kept the season's momentum going and gave me a few more opportunities to make fun of the guys in turbans at the Temple.

Before I throw it to you, though, how about a hail of bullets?

Sayid was "raised" by an Other -- but to what end? Aaron is being "raised by another" in the non-Safe Landing timeline -- and is that truly a bad thing? Who knows.

Great lines from Hurley: "It's the Others. They caught us. Again." "You're not a zombie, are you?"

Great line from Miles: "We'll be in the food court if you need us."

Who else flashed on the red pill-blue pill scene from "The Matrix" during the "take the pill" scenes? Or "Alice in Wonderland"? (Maybe Sayid would have taken the drug had it been in liquid form and said "Drink me" on the bottle.)

So Claire gets back in the car with the woman who pointed a gun at her? And then asks Kate to come up to the house with her? Yeesh. Trusting soul, that one.

Hey, it's Rob McIlhenney from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" again! Getting his head whacked by Kate again! Good times.

Hey, it's Artz again! "I'm walkin' here!" Pretty classic "Lost" comedy (which of course pays tribute to a famous scene in "Midnight Cowboy").

');

Women.

But I know social media up the ass.

Forget how I worded that.

Here are the five reasons why I think Google Buzz will fail.

1. The Name Isn’t Lame Enough.

Look around at the networks you use. The names are devastating.

Omg you guys. Seriously. We should make like a book full of faces.

I totally want to drive my feed into all of my friends.

I just yelped!

Boom.

Names.

People love lame names for their social networks. ‘Buzz’ isn’t lame-cool. It’s the name of your uncreative neighbor’s Rottweiler.

2. It Has Too Much Shit.

We like social networks that are simple.

Twitter. 140 characters. Simple home page. Put up one picture. Nobody needs you to start creating.

Facebook. A little more. But in the end, just your picture and the horrible shit in your life.

That’s it.

With Google Buzz, crazy things are happening.

GPS coordinates.

Really.

There’s a chick on my Facebook who spirals into confusion when I poke her.

You think she needs GPS mapping?

3. Social Networks That Work Don’t Need Fancy Press Releases.

Or press conferences. Or mentions on CNN.

I want to be part of a social network that doesn’t have a PR department.

Does that make me medieval?

4. It Doesn’t Appeal To My Alarming Vanity And My Even-More-Alarming Insecurity.

I need the pain of having someone unfollow me.

Then I need the joy of having a super hot chick follow me.

Then I need the pain of knowing the super hot chick is actually selling teeth whitener.

Can you do that Buzz?

I thought so.

5. The Social Networks We Love Start From The Grassroots.

When Facebook and Twitter began, they were just a bunch of dudes throwing some shitty site out there. But from that small start, just a bunch of random people starting small, people bought in. They grew the network.

The people did.

Twitter, Facebook even YouTube exploded because they were unknowns becoming knowns.

Google is an established player trying to find venues to sell more ads.

That’s not very grassrooty.

Grassrootish.

Whatever that word is, that’s what they’re not.

–

There you have it. You probably have other, more hurtful thoughts on Google Buzz.

If you would like to shatter me emotionally on Twitter click here.

If you want to poke my hot body on Facebook, click here.

What’s your prediction on the future of Google Buzz?

');

I couldn’t place my finger on it. After receiving an email from Freescale a short while ago, I finally know what it is. I am apparently now a “pundit.” It’s not even a word I use in my everyday language, and yet I am one. A “pundit.” Hmmm…. this feels odd — almost like I need to put on a bathrobe and fire up a toy lightsaber. Who knows what the appropriate action is?

Anyway, there’s a list of other pundits too, but it’s not yet complete. Freescale created a list of 10 smart mobile device pundits, but it’s looking to double the list. I’m hoping as one of the initial pundits, I get to put the new ones through some sort of pundit initiation experience. I doubt that will happen, but humor me and help Freescale out. They’re taking nominations between now and February 18 to see who is your smart mobile device go-to guy or gal. There are plenty of great names that belong on this list — some far more worthy than me — so hop to it and share those names. While you do that, I’ll think about those initiation rites in case there’s a chance to put them to use during Pundit Pledge Week.

');

document.write('

One of the themes I think we will see this year are services that take the offline and move it online and vice-versa. I believe in this theme as my startup takes the offline and moves it online. This past weekend I wrote about Suite Arrival, another service that takes the online and moves it offline.

A new service launching today from the Jackson Fish Market continues the theme. The service is named Thrilled For You and is a video guestbook kiosk software. It’s like the next version of the cheap disposable cameras that are left on tables for guests to use. I could see professional videographers purchasing this service on a white-label basis and then including it in their overall video recording packages.

The Jackson Fish Market team explains how they came up with the idea, “Last July, our own Jenny Lam got married. While there was a professional photographer, several amateur photographers, and a professional videographer (all of whom did a great job), there was still an opportunity for a different kind of documentation – the personal wish for the new couple spoken straight into the camera.”

The Thrilled For You service costs $99 and is completely customizable to match your wedding theme. For the price you can record an unlimited number of videos and even include the videos inside of the overall wedding video. Perhaps JFM could offer a DVD option as an upgrade option.

Sadly the Thrilled For You software is only available for the Mac currently but I’m hopeful they will add a PC version soon. They should also offer a rental option with an iPad or another tablet – that would help with additional distribution and make it super easy to use.

Here’s my favorite theme – now I just need to find my Princess:

CenterNetworks Partner: Get your business cards scanned and transcribed with CloudContacts.

');
