The great physicist Richard Feynman (of QED, Los Alamos, space shuttle, strip clubs and bongo drum fame), was enamored with the pure joy of finding things out. Feynman believed the beauty of science could outweigh what any poet or painter might ever imagine about the world. The deeper our knowledge of any question, the greater our enjoyment can be, he thought. And he had a way of taking this child-like fascination with the world around him and turning it into scientific discovery.

Feynman's Nobel Prize came from watching someone throw a spinning dinner plate in the Cornell cafeteria. Feynman noticed a relationship between the wobble of the plate and the rate of its spin, he worked out the equations for wobbles and eventually applied them to the spin of electrons. The implications for QED were profound and he received a Nobel for "deep-ploughing consequences for the physics of elementary particles."

This playful fascination with the way things work made Feynman uncomfortable with the non-scientific world's view of science. The world is concerned with the use of things-what new cure or convenience will this discovery bring? Journalists express the weight of a discovery in terms of its utility, not in terms of the idea. His best example of this is that the radioactive phosphorus content in a rat's brain degrades by one-half in a period of two weeks.

A journalist would express such a find in terms of implications-this might help lead to a cure for cancer. But the underlying beauty is in the idea of the thing. A scientific appreciation for the concept itself leads to a far more enticing conclusion; the molecules in your brain are constantly being replaced. You have memories from years ago, and yet the molecules in your brain are new. Such an idea tugs at the nature of consciousness. If our body is made up of different parts then it was years ago, what makes us who we are?

Poetry and science go way back: Over the centuries, they have occasionally gotten together, like old friends who find themselves in the same city and meet up for tea, only to head home the next day and lose touch again. Much has changed since the two disciplines’ earlier encounters—which resulted, for instance, in late-1700s scientific treatises written in poetic form. Poets who investigate scientific concepts, and scientists tempted by verse, are now crafting work that invites readers into scientific cultures and bodies of knowledge even as it raises questions about the research enterprise.

Somata

I was born a body of worlds
a carnal web of cosmic pearl
billions of stars that hold me to my bones,
and when one day their cores collapse
I will shed my skin in ash
and sleep among the mosses and the stone.

I’ll grow into the vine that licks the ruin
writhe beneath the savage moon
my scattered cinders eaten at the roots,
and when the ravaged willow moans again
she will take me in her veins
and shake me from her hair an astral fruit.

For we forgot a fact that we once knew,
the only ancient truth,
the knowledge of our primal origin:
That from the feral night we came as dust

With hindsight I guess I can consider myself to be a relatively intellectually sheltered, strongly committed, perhaps over committed, and focused scientist and engineer. Little did I suspect that the theme "Big Money_Big Crime" could develop to such an extent bringing to light, so to speak, the darker side of "human endeavour." The very stuff thriller crime writers thrive on. Could it be that reality surpasses fiction by a long chalk!

Let me apologise for the ,as yet, bias in my preliminary list and of suspects mostly political-dictatorships and the likes. The obvious poor coverage of say the business sphere, a somewhat greyer area in which fortunately there must be more ethical, if only because of strong legislation and financial and economical controls, internal and external to the business venture, natural (market) or man made (Gov, expert Auditing etc. ) without going into detail, each of us can remember cases in the business and commercial world or too whereby common sense and decency are thrown to the wind. Currently in France, certainly not alone,the continuing rising gap between minimum wage evolution has lost all comparison with rewards in the CAC40 Top Dogs. (bonuses, golden parachutes...)

I encourage readers to drop a line on their own personal experience and knowledge of cases of "Big Fortunes - Big Crime and the contrary, well earned well deserved rewards be it reward in terms of money, scientific, medical or social endeavour.

It is well worth viewing and listening to this video live-no playback stuff this evening (21/04/2012) It is well worth suffering through TF1 and Co's publicity.

France and the french show business system (the establishment) have at last allowed young vocal talent to express itself and there is lots of it. TF1 by allowing practically instantaneous video downloading is a clearly helping to open the dam flood gates. I never thought that one day I would compliment TF1 Cheers TF1 and The Voice.

quoted from Harlan Cobens Thriller, entitled Promise me _ Promets -moi in the french version I have just finished reading. The remark is attributed to Coben's character, The Big Jake, on page 305 edition pocket (Fr)

I must admit that, such a thought, stated so succinctly, had until now, occured to me, at least not consciously.
Assuming Coben's remark is not a reflection on his own revenue I shall take the remark litteraly and in doing so little did I suspect that the subject is a HOT TOPIC INDEED.

Fact or Fiction
The apparently outrageousness of such a statement shocked me into thought. How far is such a statement true?

I believe that I have a scientific mind and as such facts, evidence must be acquired.
From recent memory what evidence could I muster up?

Numerous cases of dictatorships: for example from recent revolutions in norther africa-The Magreb: Lybia of Gaddafit(1,2), Tunisia of Sidi Bouazid(3,4,5) Egypt's Mubarak, (6,7) and lately Syria's "Marie Antoinette" (8) came rapidly to mind and are references below [1 to 8]

and what about the rest of Africa, most of us from memory can remember a few scandelous and bloody examples: Idi Amin Dada, in Uganda and Jean-Bedel Bokassa (president of Central African Republic) [9,10 ]
The length of my first lists are becoming uncumfortably long [ 11 to 17 and far from exaustive!]

In Europe of course Vladimir Putin is a prime suspect.

Reference 7 below brought my attention to Forbres - great defenser of great wealth. This provides an interesting list of people and companies to examine in depth, enought to draw up a reliable statistical population one would think.

Tom Harper's Thriller entitled "The Book of Secrets" is an excellent read in itself but let me give you a quote worth pondering upon-a conversation comment starter from medieval section page 313

A perception of economics by a main character, the goldsmith Johannes and the money lender Soltz in the flash back sections on medieval origins of our intrigue:

Poet at Jaybern also deserves the auxiliary title "Poetry at Jaybern" The author not only writes poetry for therapeutic reasons and is a living example of the success of such approaches (join the club Jay) but also helps other poets to bring their work to light. The site is very well designed both technically and esthetically.

I have one other wish, ie. I hope the poet at Jaybern is also as keen on science as I cf. the image of a technically equipped "handicapped" athlete running with prothesis

II: "A look at Tweet meme app brought my attention to a product (Chondroitin) that I use regularly for more than 3 years despite never ending debates over efficiency and probably poor medical coverage. (I also intend to use the mix Chondo-Glucosamine - as yet 3 months experience only).

(This is true in my case - Add my experience to the study -Chondrosulf alone 400mg x 3 per day.

The GUIDE findingsBoth glucosamine sulphate and acetaminophen were more effective in reducing pain than placebo. Patients taking glucosamine sulphate exhibited more relief than patients on acetaminophen.

It was concluded that once-daily 1500 mg oral doses of glucosamine sulphate may be the preferred treatment for knee osteoarthritis.

Note
It must be noted that unlike the GAIT study that was publicly funded the GUIDE study was sponsored by the manufacturers of the glucosamine compound that was used in the trial.

In both the GAIT and GUIDE studies
1500mg of glucosamine daily was used and in the GAIT study 1200mg of chondroitin daily was used. However, some manufacturers suggest that glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate supplements should be taken in two phases, for example -

* A loading phase of a month of increased levels of glucosamine (up to 2250mg) and 1200mg of chondroitin sulphate.

* A maintenance phase of 1500mg of glucosamine and 800mg of chondroitin sulphate

Other suggestions are that glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate doses should be calculated based on a person’s body weight. One recommendation is 20mg of glucosamine for every 1kg of body weight, whilst another suggestion is as follows:

* If body weight is less than 54.5kg take 1,000mg glucosamine and 800mg chondroitin sulphate.

* If body weight is between 54.5 and 91kg take 1,500mg glucosamine and 1,200 mg chondroitin sulphate.

* If body weight is more than 91kg take 2,000mg glucosamine and 1,600mg chondroitin sulphate.

Are these ploys by supplement companies to sell more of their product or is there a scientific basis for these recommendations? Well, at present the evidence for doses and schedules is fairly sparse and that is one of the reasons why daily doses of 1500mg of glucosamine and 1200mg of chondroitin sulphate are common recommendations.

What about the source of these products?

Chondroitin sulphate is usually produced from cow (bovine) cartilage but can be produced from pig (porcine), chicken and even shark cartilage. Glucosamine on the other hand is derived from shellfish, usually shrimp, lobster or crab shells.

oHigh-Time to allow referees Video-TV back-up- Better let the referees chose what video back-up they need for their own self-respect and authority:

A summary of the incidents encountered during the World Cup 2010 First Round made the fist page of the very serious french daily news paper Le Monde on Tuesday 25 June2010 (four days after my despairing post 4 days earlier, cf. OTHER POSTS below)

Video left no cause for doubt on another two decisive goals in this damned WC 2010: The goal scored by England (vs Germany) and the offside goal scored by Argentina occurred at crucial stages in both matches (double sanctions!)

Quote: Once again the referees saw nothing while the TV banished all cause for doubt. The spectators at the game, the players who saw the TV screen and the rest of the world saw it. Even if the referee saw the TV he is forbidden to use the information!!!!!

Those who still believe that video is not an immense assistance to allow efficient refereeing, justice and fairness not to mention improved soccer risk placing themselves on the unnecessary hoodlum side of (sports) management.

The factual front page article was followed up by what must be the most stupid conclusion I have ever come across hardly worthy of a paper such as Le Monde. The feature signed by Bruno Lesprit is entitled "If the referee had TV" (-video back-up) QUOTE: With "progress" one can fear that one day the Video will kill the football star" - "Lesprit" waining he gets very confused citing and adaption a Buggles song title Video Killed the Radio Star

Total Confusion:

1. Soccer-football is a visual sport perfectly adapted to TV - Video for spectators and coaches alike.

2. What has the soccer-football star got to do with hoodlum or criminal behaviour? As one who has played this game through school and school regional selection, and in top youth sides continuing as an amateur until 38 years of age (on of my team mates went on to play professional football and ended a semi-pro league at 53 years of age - an unsung hero a star in his own right-Bobby Lawrie of Plymouth(apprentice pro), Irvine Meadow (1969) Partick Thistle, Glasgow, Scotland(1969-1976). Lesprit does not appear to share the true specialists criteria for Soccer Stardom. The truely great skillful, clean players Jean-Michel Larqué and Dominique Rocheteau of the famous St Etienne finalist in the European Cup,

George Best of ManU, going back even further beyond Real Madrid's 7 times European Cup side we have Stanley Mathews...Current highly skilled players who have no need of violence, jersey pulling going for the legs not the ball -true footballers we have (although age is catching up with them) Thierry Henry 33 and Steven Gerrard,30 and the youngsters Lionnel Messi,Inesta to name but a few.

All of these players could but thrive on a cleaned-up game.

Lesprit and the current ruling bodies are also getting their knickers in knots over what should be subject to video back-up. The system KISS keep it simple stupid(s) I The referees must by now know what they need to do their job properly a few obvious but random remarks 1. The Goal line, 2 The penalty area. Decisive goal actions, 3. misconduct - especially violence and jersey pulling. Such rules did not come into rugby football over night but evolved gradually to bring rugby to the attractive spectacular game it is today. In soccer inertia is killing the game, abusing it's star performers and reducing excellent referees to the status of court jesters. Fancy technology such as electronics in the ball and the like can wait till later much later. Get a sensor on the goal line...

Come on you guys and here I am addressing the referees and their continuous learning centres- pretty brutal awakening currently. Time to decide what you need to make the sport you adjudicate a proper sport a game of fair-play where skill reigns over brutality, simulated fouls and misconduct of all sorts. As in many peaceful major change-evolutions a strike is called for. As WC 2010 shows this should be unlimited - why not start now during the WC 2010 final stages? Just Video replay back-up on a few criteria decided by the worlds top referees.
