My lovely wife, who apparently doesn't have enough to do at work, often sends me e-mails with various goofy attachments - if you've ever worked in an office, you know the kind. So the other day she sent me a bunch of those fake motivational posters, and one made me chuckle and is relevant to a comic book blog:

I think Zan and Jayna are my favorite, although Batman's pretty funny too. And look whose signature is on it!

I wasn’t planning to post anything at halftime of this Chicago-Green Bay game. I’m not there and won’t pretend to bring you the kind of insight we expect to get on site.

But I’ll just throw this one out: Green Bay is going to have to find something better than Allen Barbre at right tackle. Like, now. Otherwise, quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn’t going to make it through this game.

I know. There are so many angles to a game Green Bay leads 10-2 at halftime. (That’s not a typo.) Jay Cutler has three interceptions amid a surprising ratio of 22 passes to 11 runs. The Packers defense is swarming, and Cutler seems in total disarray.

But Barbre has been no match for Chicago defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, who has tossed him aside for two sacks and at least four other post-throw hits on Rodgers. It’s no coincidence that Rodgers is getting a case of happy feet, and he’s missed on what would have been two long touchdown passes -- one to Donald Driver and one to Greg Jennings.

And we don’t have to remind you about the Packers’ depth behind Rodgers. Second-year player Matt Flynn, who is still recovering from a sprained shoulder, is the long and short of it.

The Packers’ primary option at right tackle Sunday evening is rookie T.J. Lang. Breno Giacomini is inactive. If they’re not keen on putting a rookie into this game, the Packers will have to at least give Barbre tight end help on every pass play.

The NFL is all about building morally upright citizens, which is why they don't cotton to things like fightin', whorin' and gamblin'. But maybe while waiting to watch the big match, you might enjoy their sober new ping pong game.

Tailgating, as you know, is a time for hot dogs and lemonade after you pay $45 to park three miles from your local football stadium. The NFL would prefer that you sit patiently in your cars and listen to the radio while waiting for kickoff, but they understand that you want to loosen up for the long walk to your seat. So why not pass the boredom by throwing ping pong balls at this custom table, emblazoned with the logo of your favorite team? Only $130!

It's a pong table! I suppose you could put cups at the end of the table in some sort of triangular format and maybe throw the balls the into the cups. And if you'd like to put a beverage in the cups to weigh them down, that would be fine too. But who says it has to be beer? Why not water? Or a delicious Coca-Cola Classic™? You could put anything in there really. The important thing is that you're having fun ... and not gambling on it!

By the way, your starting running back is probable with a stiff neck. Probably from all the table pong!

If you came into the stadium and bought 20 cups at $9.50 a piece ... hmmm, maybe you could set up your table on the concourse of the second deck? Or failing that, you could just drink the beer without the aid of a stupid game. You know, like a human?

The Mad City Ski Team of Madison, Wis., won the Wisconsin State Show Ski Championships for the fourth consecutive year on Sunday. The 43rd annual event, the world's largest water ski tournament, was held at Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids. Mad City tallied 1,938.72 points, earning box score awards for dock and equipment, pick-up boat, audio presentation and jump act. There were 14 teams in the Division 1 field.

There are certain monikers that stick with a team/player, and every time you hear some one utter the phrase, it makes you think of them and them alone. One of the more famous ones, "America's Team" has been associated with the Dallas Cowboys since 1979, and one that's unmistakable. Well that is until ESPN gets their hands on it. The "Leader" posted an article yesterday titled "The Great Debate: 'America's Team'", and is trying to make cases for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots (!), as the heirs to the title. Seriously....

It's time to rescind the Cowboys' honor and turn it over to the Patriots. The Cowboys are known for wanton spending and attention-mongering with zero results. The Patriots are widely regarded as the NFL's most efficiently run organization. Their owner, Robert Kraft, was a season-ticket holder who aspired to buy the team one day -- and did. The American dream and capitalism all in one.

What's more, the Patriots were formed in Boston, a.k.a. "The Cradle of Liberty" and crucible for the American Revolution.

They were an original member of the American Football League, which is celebrating its golden anniversary this year.

They changed their name to New England to reflect their meaning to a region where Pilgrims landed. Some teams, such as Minnesota and Arizona, claim a state. The Patriots claim six.

The Patriots wear red, white and blue. When they score, Minutemen line up behind the end zone and fire their muskets into the air.

They're loved. They're despised. They give a nation of sports fans plenty to talk about. They win.

They're called the Patriots, for crying out loud.

What's more American than all of that?

The thing that's so dumb about this isn't just that they've had the term since the 70s, but rather that they're just using Football teams. Shouldn't you consider the Yankees (perhaps more fans out there), the Red Wings (the American working man's team), and/or the Celtics?

As much as I hate the Cowboys, that nickname is theirs and theirs alone.

'Asteroids' heading towards the big screen?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has won an all-out "bidding war" over the film rights to Atari's classic Asteroids video game. We're not entirely sure who all was involved in this "war," but the conflict couldn't possibly be prompted over the universal themes tackled by the story of the plucky little triangular spaceship and the asteroid field it inhabits. As the Reporter, um, reports: "As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology." Michael Bay is rumored to be very interested in directing.

The “players” are probably all the same. Joey Chestnut is still hungry. Kobayashi is still super tiny. That said, I figured I’d just link to last year’s preview. Is this what Hollywood has now been reduced to? Making movies about a small triangle (likely to be played by Shia LaBoeuf) shooting large rocks (likely to be played by Dwayne Johnson) into little rocks (Warwick Davis?) whilst a random spaceship (Scarlett Johansson?) flies past letting off the odd pot-shot.

I always felt the narrative was compelling enough to survive the transition to cinematic form.

There. Is. No. Story! Why would you have a 'four-studio bidding war' over this? Why? WHY?

Where will the insanity end? No, wait, we've already been there. But expect to see Uwe Boll's Paperboy, Quentin Tarantino's Pac-Man and Pixar's Frogger on their way in the near future.

The other day in a radio interview, the host was asking me about Hollywood’s hard-on for remakes and movies about toys. “What’s next?” the host asked me, “A movie about Pong!?” That’s right, the most preposterously retarded idea he could think of is almost identical to an idea Universal considers good enough to spend millions of dollars on.

Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game “Asteroids.” Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. [Lopez recently worked Bedtime Stories and wrote the latest draft of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, while Di Bonaventura bears responsibility for G.I. Joe.]
In “Asteroids,” initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both. [THR]
