We figure that it would run some kind of multi-touch although it might also be just regular netbook/laptop.

I’ve tried Chrome OS every often and then but I don’t know if I am rather surprised by its performance yet as you need to be connected to the internet constantly.

But, then again, I can’t think of using a computer/laptop/smartphone when there was no internet access other than when I am in the elevator or my ISP has connectivity problems.

Anyways, it will be exciting for people who attend Taipai’s Computex 2010 this year, where Acer will be showing off their new Chrome device.

I have steadily been using more Google Chrome as of lately, I find it better and faster for some sites than Mozilla Firefox.

With the new plug-ins, I think the popularity of Google Chrome will definitely rise.  And of course, all the better before Google Chrome operating system is officially released.

There’s already hundreds of Chrome extensions available, I predict this number will get rather larger in the next 6 months or so.

Kudos to Google Chrome team for creating such great browser and extensions!

Sources at Canonical tell me that Canonical’s Ubuntu developers have been working with Google’s Chrome team since before Google announced its netbook operating system plan in July 2009. The company decided to go public with its involvement after Google announced today that they were open-sourcing the Chrome operating system.

I think this is a smart move on Google to work with such talented group of people who made Ubuntu.  Personally, I think there will come a day when most people use Ubuntu while Windows becomes obsolete.  (or Google Chrome OS)

Google Chrome OS has really been intended for lower-performance hardware such as netbooks, smartphones and alike so I don’t think they will be competing much against Ubuntu itself but add value to the mobile niche.

Chromium is the open source version of Chrome OS, you can find it here.  (although you can’t really install it on any physical computers yet as it requires a BIOS change but you can try virtual machines like VMWare for demo.)

Here’s a German version of Google Chrome without all the features that send people’s surfing info back to Google.  I can see that some of Chrome’s embedded featured that send back personal data back to Google can slow down your browsing slightly, although not that much.

For those of you who want complete privacy, you can try this Iron browser.

The “Iron” browser is based on the “Google Chromium” source code, but “Iron” does not send any user specific data to Google anymore and it does not contain a unique user ID. Iron is a product of “SRWare ” – a german software company. In Iron the following Google Chrome features have been deactivated:

  • no alternative error messages, when having entered a wrong URL
  • no sending of collected data to Google, if Iron has crashed
  • no unwanted Google updater

    The same thing can be said of Firefox, of which some companies have took advantage and even made a Web Browser-based SQL database browser called Kirix Strata. (It’s built on the Gecko, the open source engine behind Firefox.  You can find details here.)

    By open-sourcing it, Google’s already ahead of the competitions like Microsoft while Mozilla is also open source and has been proving itself in the open-source world for years.

    I think in 2-3 years, Google can easily blow the market away from everybody not because Chrome browser is awesome right now, but because it will be 5-10 times more awesome by then.  Knowing the number of people who work on the Google search engine as a mass collaboration of engineers to build a highly scalable search engine system, I think this Browser market is already in their hands as they have proved once before with GoogleMaps overtaking YahooMaps with its itsy bitsy pixel mapping technology . (although Yahoo now has the same technology, their maps are almost identical to Google except StreetView and some other features, which make GoogleMaps better.

    We will keep a keen eye on how this all turns out, stay tuuuuned by subscribing to the blog!

    Here’s a cool Chrome Hack, it’s how to change your Bookmarklet Favicon Icons using a Windows SQL database browser and switching around some values.  It’s very interesting to note that the Chrome browser uses a local database within the program, thus making it more stable and scalable.  (I am not sure if the same thing is done with Firefox but I believe there’s a bunch of libraries that you need to know.)

    This is a rather complex hack involving numbers so I will just wait until the Chrome adds automatic favicon recognition feature like Firefox.

    But if you really want it NOW, you can click the via link below and knock yourself out.

    I added quite a few bookmarklets to my Bookmarks bar and was unhappy with the same default icon that showed for each one. There are no settings currently available within Chrome to change the icon, but there is a way to fix them that works quite well.

    Although not the official version of Google Chrome for Mac and Linux, the CrossOver Chromium is pretty much the Mac and Linux version of Google Chrome since it’s built on Chromium.

    Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web. The Chromium codebase is the basis for Google’s Chrome browser.

    Until Google officially releases their Linux/Mac versions, you can resort to downloading the CrossOver Chromium on your Mac and Linux.

    Changing User Agent String with any browser is a useful hack that can be used to get free WiFi at Starbucks hotspots .

    Here’s a real ghetto hack that involves changing the hex values of chrome.dll using a free hex editor.

    Simply open the file and look for something like this:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.X.Y.Z Safari/525.13.

    Then change to something like this or any other user agent string:

    Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543 Safari/419.3

    The result is shown below where the browser will act like an iPhone Browser.

    This might actually be useful for testing applications for the iPhone browser.  Of course, you can do it in Firefox too but Google Chrome browser is probably closer to the iPhone’s Safari browser since it’s based on the WebKit.

    Well, take a look at this marketing strategy where a company sends out fake employee badges and fake company organization chart just to get the bloggers’ attention.  (I actually had chance to talk to one of the founders of the company at the Web2.0 show)

    In a similar fashion, Google sends out their Chrome Comic Book to all types of bloggers, developers, and press people before you can even download the browser itself.

    What happened after that is you know what.  :)   (Yes, very badly bastardized versions of the comic indeed but the fire spread wildly through the blogsphere causing people like me to make a blog about the Chrome)

    I think Google Chrome will keep going strong as long as the Chrome developers (Chromers) respond to wanted features and bugs quickly.

    I found this tip that Microsoft’s (MSFT) Office Live doesn’t work in Google’s (GOOG) Chrome browser and for me that was kinda hard to believe as I know OfficeLive only uses Javascript and AJAX to run its site.

    Anyways, I tried it myself and above is what I get with Homer Simpson saying, “Dope!”.  (You need to sign in to get the error meesage btw.)

    I think this is either Microsoft never intended for another browser to come into the market OR they hate Google and they will do anything they can to stop Chromers.

    Well, Microsoft should fix it real soon if they get this message but otherwise, Chromers will have to stay away from Microsoft’s products and rely on Google Docs and GMail instead.  (Well Google can always make IE not work in Google…. that would really make people stop using IE… what a brilliant marketing strategy although very cruel.)

    How to Run Java and Java Applets in Chrome!

    A lot of game sites such as Yahoo Games and others may use Java and Java applets to run their games/applications.

    Although the Google Chrome comes with a super-fast Javascript engine, Javascript is an entirely different platform than Java .  Therefore, you need to install a beta version of Java Runtime Engine (JRE).

    FYI, this is also great new for Java developers like myself, knowing that there IS support for Java on the Chrome.

    Now, you can play your Texas Hold’em in Yahoo Games all day long with Chrome.

    Well, I have been searching for new Chrome hacks lately and found this neat feature in Google Chrome that the address bar actually can double as Google Search, sorta like Firefox’s search bar.

    What a great idea and a good thing I stumbled onto this.

    There is no need to install Google Search, because it’s already a part of Chrome’s address bar. Type whatever you want to search right into Chrome’s address bar, then press Enter

    And did you know that you can search by highlighting any word or phrase?
    Just highlight the text, then right click it, which gives you the option to run Google search in a new window.

    Here’s a great way to make a Email Link bookmark in Gmail in Google Chrome so it takes you straight to “Compose Mail”.

    Someone has posted a bookmarklet to email links with your default mail program, but for those who use Gmail as webmail, this will work.

    Make a new bookmark and make the name Email with Gmail or whatever you want, and the URL

    That currently opens a new tab. I’m working on getting the pop-out effect that Gmail has.
    Unfortunately, middle-clicking the first one does not work, because when it opens it in a new tab, it is reading the URL and title from that new tab instead of the original one you wanted to to link to. I may work on a solution to this in the future.

    Oddly this makes the text box in Gmail not the width of the screen. I’m not sure why that is, but it works just fine- just looks a little funny. If anyone can offer any wisdom to this, I would appreciate it.

    3. The resulting page says that Hotmail cannot identify your browser (Typical MS style, if you think it’s better than your own, pretend it doesn’t exist! Try ignoring Firefox now!). Near the bottom of this page is a link which says “continue anyway” or something on that mood. Click on that and you are good to go. And use the new 0.4beta of Chrome for better performance.

    Chrome brings Incognito to Firefox 3.1 and IE8

    Google Chrome might lack in terms of experience in comparison to Mozilla Firefox 3.1 and Microsoft’s IE8 but it turns out Firefox and IE will be implementing Chrome’s incognito stealth mode.

    The incognito steath mode in Google Chrome browser (Ctrl+Shift+N in Google Chrome opens a new “incognito window”) allows users to surf the web anonymously, the browser skipping caching, saving passwords, and other important information that might possibly harm the user.  (Of course, for you porno freaks, this is a perfect way to “hide” your traces.)

    It’s a simply concept but Google’s Chrome browser has included as a standard option.  It’s not surprising that Firefox 3.1 and IE8 will have the same feature as it’s not too complicated to implement other than “not storing any of users’ data”.

    September 11, 2008 (Computerworld) Mozilla Corp. will respond to rivals Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. with a private-browsing mode in Firefox, according to notes posted on its Web site, and is on track to deliver one in 3.1, the version that will likely go beta next month.

    The Australian’s copy of Google Chrome Comic was sold for $372.  ($454.99 AU) – calculator

    The seller will be donating all profits to charity.

    What I wonder most is if Google will start selling their comic book as Chrome gains in popularity.

    Perhaps, that was the genius, the Google Chrome Comic book got everyone interested and Google secretly may have paid easily couple million dollars for this “comic” marketing effort.  (maybe not but it’s like it hits you later)

    Here’s the excerpt from the closed auction:

    One copy of the official Google Chrome copy book sent to bloggers and members of the press prior to the launch of Google’s Chrome browser.

    I received mine late as they sent it to my PO Box, meaning it couldn’t get to me via courier.

    An online copy of the comic book is available on Google here.

    This is a limited edition print, and is not publicly available from what I’m aware. With Google Chrome quickly gaining marketshare, the book that launched a Google browser will only increase in value with time.

    I’ve briefly flicked through the book, but it hasn’t been shared around, so consider the condition mint.

    Apparently, Google Chrome browser has picked up in popularity very quickly, there’s even a Firefox extension called Chromifox, which lets you make Firefox “look” like Chrome browser.

    It is a method of finding the actual IP addresses behind domain names before the user clicks on a link.

    Basically, Google Chrome “figures” out every IP address of every link before you click on it.

    What do you have to do?

    Nothing, it’s turned on by default.  I just wanted you to know that it’s there.

    This clever little feature speeds up your Web browsing without you having to do a thing — it’s turned on by default. Whenever you visit a new page, Chrome examines the IP address of every link on the page, and does a DNS resolution for each. That way, when you click a link, Chrome already knows the IP address and can send you there fast.

    It’s turned on by default. You can turn it off by clicking the Tools icon and selecting Options, clicking Under the Hood, then unchecking the box next to Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance.

    (Making a new bookmarklet for Youtube FLV download on Google Chrome Browser)

    Well, here’s another cool hack that all you YouTubers might enjoy as you can download the actual YouTube videos with a little effort.  This hack probably works for Firefox and other browsers too because it’s a simple Javascript bookmarklet.

    Here’s how to do it, copy the following code and make a bookmarklet, you should see “Download FLV” as shown below:

    Of course, there’s plethora of proxy sites and programs you can use but here’s a good one for blocking ads in case you don’t have them.

    A solution to this for now is http://www.privoxy.org/

    1.) Install Privoxy
    2) Click on the Wrench icon in Chrome in the upper right corner
    3.) Choose options>Under The Hood>Change proxy settings
    4.) A windows box pops up, choose LAN settings (at least this is what it’s called in Vista)
    5.) Check off “Proxy settings” and in the address setting add127.0.0.1 and in the port 8118
    6.) If you have the option, you can also check off “Bypass proxy for local settings”
    7.) Click “Ok”, close chrome and restart it.

    Tada. Enjoy.

    Google Chrome Tips - Open Links in Google Chrome from Firefox!

    If you are like me, you will need to keep using Firefox for most applications and websites but here’s a great Firefox plugin for opening up websites in Chrome from Firefox.

    This way, you keep using Firefox as main process while you open extra windows in Chrome and save yourself some time and memory.

    If are using Firefox along side Google’s browser, this “Open in Google Chrome” extension might come handy – it lets you send web sites and links directly to Google Chrome from Firefox.

    It can also be configured to always open certain web pages in Chrome – e.g. *google*, gmail, etc.

    Install “Open in Google Chrome” for Firefox 3

    Download open-in-google-chrome.xpi on to your desktop and then drag it inside Firefox 3 much like what you did for Send to Google Docs.

    To get started, here’s a CSS hack I found for the Google Chrome that might help you get started.

    Non-compliant selectors can be used and a valid way to target individual browsers. Chrome supports every selector, just like Safari 3.1. My recommendation is to use the body:first-of-type hack, the CSS hack/filter for Safari as a filter for Safari 3+ and Chrome. There should be no reason to target Chrome with the exclusion of Safari 3.1, but if you want to target both, filtering out Safari 3.0, I would try using:

    There a lot of buzz on the internet starting with someone saying that the Google Chrome looks like a Simon, Pokeball from Pokemon, and some people simply hating it.

    Well to clarify where most of the Google Logo came from, we decided to do some color matching with Google’s original logo here:

    As you can see, all the colors were taken from the original Google logo.

    As for the shape of Chrome logo, I guess it does kinda remind me of Simon mostly but Pokeball seems a little far fetched. (maybe those kids who watch Pokeman all day)

    I think it’s important to note that Firefox and IE logos both are sorta circular so that might be why Google decided to make such a logo.

    Yes, in all, I am tired of people blogging about the Chrome logo, (so we will stop here) I wish people concentrated more on the features.  If you really want to contribute to Google’s logo creation, we highly suggest you to apply for a job at Google first .

    I heard about a security flaw where users are not promoted before downloading last week and Google has fixed it but here’s another one found by a company:

    Vietnamese security company Bach Khoa Internet Security (BKIS) has found a flaw in Google Chrome 0.2.149.27 and posted details on its Web site. The company says the problem is a critical buffer-overflow vulnerability that could allow a hacker to perform a remote attack and take complete control of the affected system.

    Here’s the proof of concept code:

    An issue exists in how chrome behaves with undefined-handlers in chrome.dll version 0.2.149.27. A crash can result without user interaction. When a user is made to visit a malicious link, which has an undefined handler followed by a ’special’ character, the chrome crashes with a Google Chrome message window “Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart now?”. It crashes on “int 3″ at 0×01002FF3 as an exception/trap, followed by “POP EBP” instruction when pointed out by the EIP register at 0×01002FF4.

    I am sure Google will get this little bug fixed real soon but in the meanwhile, you can send any bugs you find to: tips [at] chrome-hacks.net.
