FireFox 4.0 RC on Windows

Firefox 4 has moved out of its beta period and is now in the “release candidate” stage.

Around 70% of Firefox plugins are compatible with Firefox 4, and the browser has been optimized for better add-on management, as well. Users can submit feedback on the browser’s performance or issues at any time from the Help menu.

Also, the new RC release represents significant bug fixes (8,000 squashed and counting) and performance enhancements, including faster start-up, speedier graphics rendering, and faster page loading.

How to Get Free Food (Basic)

If there is already a tutorial on this, do not flame, instead just see this as my version. I have a few different methods:

METHOD #1:
1) Get some food (e.g. fries)
2) Pull out a piece of hair
3) Put it in the food
4) Return food and complain
5) ???
6) Profit

METHOD #2:
Note: This is mainly for drive throughs.
1) When you get to talk to a worker, tell them someone you know (friend, relative, etc.) was just there and did not receive an item he/she ordered. He/she is already home across town and knew you were on the way over, so he/she called you to pick it up for them.
2) If they are stupid and ask for the receipt, repeat step 1. If not, proceed to step 3.
3) ???
4) Profit

METHOD #3:
1) Go to a restaurant and eat in.
2) For your sides, order things that sound similar (e.g. fries or rice)
3) When your meal comes, tell them you ordered the similar sounding item. (e.g. "I ordered fries, not rice.")
4) ???
5) Profit

Social engineering exploits human nature by convincing someone to reveal information or perform an activity. Examples of social engineering include:

Impersonating support staff or management, either in person or over the phone.
Asking for someone to hold open a door rather than using a key for entrance.
Spoofed e-mails that ask for information or ask for tasks to be performed (such as delete a file or go to a Web site and enter sensitive information).
Looking on desks for usernames and passwords.
Specific social engineering attacks include:
Attack Description
Dumpster diving
Dumpster diving is the process of looking in the trash for sensitive information that has not been properly disposed of.

Shoulder surfing

Shoulder surfing involves looking over the shoulder of someone working on a computer.

Piggybacking

Piggybacking refers to an attacker entering a secured building by following an authorized employee.

Masquerading

Masquerading refers to convincing personnel to grant access to sensitive information or protected systems by pretending to be someone who is authorized and/or requires that access.
The attacker usually poses as a member of senior management.
A scenario of distress is fabricated to the user to convince them that their actions are necessary.

Eavesdropping

Eavesdropping refers to an unauthorized person listening to conversations of employees or other authorized personnel discussing sensitive topics.
Phishing Phishing uses an e-mail and a spoofed Web site to gain sensitive information. In a phishing attack:

A fraudulent message that appears to be legitimate is sent to a target.
The message requests the target to visit a Web site which also appears to be legitimate.
The fraudulent Web site requests the slave to provide sensitive information such as the account number and password.

Hoax virus
information e-mails is a form of a phishing attack. This type of attack preys on e-mail recipients who are fearful and will believe most information if it is presented in a professional manner. All too often, the victims of these attacks fail to double check the information or instructions with a reputable third party antivirus software vendor before implementing the recommendations. Usually these hoax messages instruct the reader to delete key system files or download Trojan horses.

Before I get into the World of Social Engineering, please keep in mind that this guide was made for, but not limited to, beginners. So with that in mind, let's get this show on the road! So what exactly is social engineering? I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, you're probably even asking yourself this now! To cut around the BS and throw away the leftovers, social engineering is the act of manipulating people into revealing information or tricking the slave to performing actions that are beneficial to the user. That's it! To put it in simpler terms; ever trick someone into doing something dumb, or told a lie to get someone to tell you something, or even get your friend to lie for you to get "something" out of it? That's social engineering my friends! It's that simple, and anyone can do it, even the weird kid in your class that's deaf that tries to talk, but can't, but still tries anyway! Although social engineering is relatively easy to do, and can be used anywhere at any time, the very world of it is complex, there is no "one-way" to doing things. Your options are endless, so make use of it!

One morning a few years back, a group of strangers walked into a large shipping firm and walked out with access to the firm's entire corporate network. How did they do it? By obtaining small amounts of access, bit by bit, from a number of different employees in that firm. First, they did research about the company for two days before even attempting to set foot on the premises. For example, they learned key employees' names by calling HR. Next, they pretended to lose their key to the front door, and a man let them in. Then they "lost" their identity badges when entering the third floor secured area, smiled, and a friendly employee opened the door for them.

The strangers knew the CFO was out of town, so they were able to enter his office and obtain financial data off his unlocked computer. They dug through the corporate trash, finding all kinds of useful documents. They asked a janitor for a garbage pail in which to place their contents and carried all of this data out of the building in their hands. The strangers had studied the CFO's voice, so they were able to phone, pretending to be the CFO, in a rush, desperately in need of his network password. From there, they used regular technical hacking tools to gain super-user access into the system.

In this case, the strangers were network consultants performing a security audit for the CFO without any other employees' knowledge. They were never given any privileged information from the CFO but were able to obtain all the access they wanted through social engineering.

Wal-Mart store phones have clearly marked buttons for the paging system. Wal-Mart is the exception, not the rule. So how do you get on the paging system to have a little fun when you're bored out of your mind shopping with your girlfriend? Social engineering, my whipped friend. Find a phone and dial an extension, preferably the store op. The key here is to become a harried employee, saying something similar to..."This is Bill in shoes. What's the paging extension?" Some Methods of Social Engineering:

* Phishing - is a technique often used to obtain private information. Typically, the user sends an e-mail that appears to come from a legitimate business requesting "verification" of information and warning of some consequence if it is not provided. The e-mail usually contains a link to a web page that seems legit and has a form requesting everything from a home address to an ATM card's PIN.

* IVR or phone phishing - also known as "vishing"; this technique uses an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to recreate a legit sounding copy of a bank or other institution's IVR system. The slave is prompted to call in to the "bank" via a phone number provided in order to "verify" information.

* Baiting - Baiting is like the real-world Trojan Horse that uses physical media and relies on the curiosity or greed of the slave. In this attack, the attacker leaves a malware infected floppy disc, CD ROM, or USB flash drive in a location sure to be found, gives it a legitimate looking and curiosity-piquing label, and simply waits for the slave to use the device.

* Quid pro quo - An attacker calls random numbers at a company claiming to be calling back from technical support. Eventually they will hit someone with a legitimate problem, grateful that someone is calling back to help them. The attacker will "help" solve the problem and in the process have the user type commands that give the attacker access or launch malware.

4. Advantage of Social Engineering

So to soak up what you've learned so far, which was, an introduction to social engineering and some examples on the very subject itself (SE). On to the very question that people want to hear and know. What can I GAIN from using social engineering? Anything! Like I said before, and not afraid to hesitate to say again, your options are endless when using social engineering! It all depends on your goal and how you approach it, is the defining factor of your outcome. Now with that said, don't go off thinking that you can take over the World in a matter of a few days, not going to happen. But what you can do is practice using social engineering, little by little, step by step; learn how to build your ground and the environment around it. So yes, think outside the box and learn to open new doors! Keep in mind that connections and relationships is everything in being a social engineer, without it, what can you build from nothing? Nothing! That's when social engineering comes in place, learn to make new friends, take the time to ask questions, and most importantly, learn your target! Like one once said, "My greatest enemy is also my best friend." You can achieve anything with the right mindset!

5. Are You a Social Engineer?

So are you a social engineer? YES! You're a social engineer even without knowing it! Believe it or not, more than 50% of people living on this Earth subconsciously don't know what they're capable of! That's a scary thought, that's a lot of potential lost! But with the right direction and approach to your goal, anything is possible! Anything. Don't let your options deteriorate due to discouragement and with the wrong mindset. The decision is yours to let it happen or not!

6. Final Thoughts

You must feel good up to this point! I mean, not only did you catch a glimpse of the World of Social Engineering, but you can take this bit of info with you and apply it to whatever you are trying to achieve. One of the best features of social engineering is that it can't be subjugated to one subject, so it can basically be used on virtually anything! I personally recommend using social engineering to create a positive effect, rather than a negative one. Remember, don't get ahead of yourself and overdo it, or else you'll end up in these happy hands:

1. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life – In a society where people blame everything from their parents to the government for failure, those who don’t buy into this mentality or succumb to the “victim” thinking succeed. To blame something or somebody outside yourself is saying they have control of your life and not you. Someone else’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.

2. Live Your Life On Purpose - What separates motivational thinkers from the unsuccessful is that they believe they’re doing what they were put her to do. The difference between this and just living, is that the latter is just getting through the week with the least problems. But when you live your life on purpose, your main concern is doing the job right. For the entrepreneur this means finding a cause you believe in and building your business around it.

3. Be Willing to Pay the Price - Be willing to pay the price for your dreams. Wanting a big house, a luxury car, and a million dollars in the bank is all very nice, and everyone wants these things – but are you willing to pay the price to get them? This is one of the major differences between the successful and unsuccessful.

4. Stay Focused – Every day we’re bombarded with hundreds of tasks, phone calls, messages, and everyone competing for our time. Focusing requires giving up something in the present because you are investing your time in something that will pay off big-time down the road. Jack Canfield and Mark Hanson were turned by 30 publishers when they submitted the first “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book. Instead of giving up, they stayed focused on their goal and did four or five interviews per day for radio, TV, and newspapers, for five days a week for a whole year. Eventually, a small publisher decided to take a chance, and of course now it’s a best-seller that spawned an entire series that have sold more than 10 million copies.

5. Become An Expert in Your Field One striking factor all successful people have in common is how seriously they take their profession. They strive to be the best at what they do, and do almost anything to improve. If someone followed you around all day with a video camera at your business, would it be a tape you’d be proud of or embarrassed about? Make the decision today to work at being the best in your field. How? By finding out what the “best” in your field are doing, and do what they do.

6. Write Out a Plan for Achieving Your Goals - Write out an action plan/map for how you’re going to achieve your goals. Trying to reach your goals without a plan is like trying to drive from Los Angeles to Chicago without a map. A goal that isn’t written down is merely a wish or fantasy.

7. Never Give Up - Never, never, never give up. When you’re fully committed to achieving your goal, giving up is not an option. You must be willing do whatever it takes to make it happen. The power of perseverance is an awesome force. As someone once said, “inch by inch it’s a cinch”. Think of the lowly inchworm – if it pondered the length of the trip from start to finish before it started, it probably would never move. To a worm’s point-of-view, the garden path must look like a trip to Mars. Never give up! Keep on going like the Eveready battery bunny, and pretty soon you’re there.

8. Don’t Delay - Nobody knows how much time they have left to accomplish their dreams, and we must remember that we don’t have forever. The clock is ticking, and sooner or later your number comes up and you’re gone. Successful achievers know this too, but they don’t view it as a “negative”. Achievers use it to “spur them on”. They go after what they want as energetically and as passionately as possible, for as long as they have.

Coca Cola Recipe Leaked ?

The top secret recipe of one of the world’s most popular beverages, Coca Cola, which was kept locked in a steel vault in Atlanta city and guarded 24-hours a day, has now been leaked by a website.

The drink was created by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886. Its recipe reportedly contains the exact measures of all the different oils needed for Coca Cola’s secret ingredient – Merchandise 7X.

Despite making up only one percent of the drink’s total formula, Merchandise 7X gives the popular soft drink its unique taste, the Daily Telegraph reported.

However, thisamericanlife.org website claims to have discovered a list in a photograph in a newspaper article giving the ingredients and exact quantities to make the drink.

The Feb 8, 1979, edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a photograph of someone holding open a book with a recipe claimed to be an exact replica of Pemberton’s.

The ‘secret’ recipe is al follows:

Fluid extract of Coca 3 drams USP

Citric acid 3 oz

Caffeine 1 oz

Sugar 30 (quantity unclear from the markings)

Water 2.5 gal

Lime juice 2 pints 1 qrt

Vanilla 1 oz

Caramel 1.5 oz or more to colour

7X flavour (use 2oz of flavour to 5 gals syrup)

Alcohol 8 oz

Orange oil 20 drops

Lemon oil 30 drops

Nutmeg oil 10 drops

Coriander 5 drops

Neroli 10 drops

Twitter to Launch Verified Accounts

screenshot Of reader LensThis week, Twitter has been dealing with a lawsuit from St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa. The lawsuit stemmed over an individual impersonating La Russa on Twitter. There has been no systematic way for Twitter to verify that a celebrity tweeter was real. Until now, that is. Twitter has just announced a verified accounts beta program to make sure there are no more lawsuits of this nature.

Today, Twitter stated the following on the La Russa case:

Reports this week that Twitter has settled a law suit and officially agreed to pay legal fees for an impersonation complaint that was taken care of by our support staff in accordance with our Terms are erroneous. Twitter has not settled, nor do we plan to settle or pay.

The summary: Twitter did not settle, as was reported yesterday, nor are they intending to settle. However, the lawsuit was indeed a trigger for them to announce verified accounts.

So what exactly will the Verified Accounts system entail? Well, according to the Twitter blog, there will be a special seal on any account that is verified by Twitter as being authentic. This seal, which you can see in the image above, will appear at the top right of profile pages. This is targeted toward public officials, public agencies, athletes, and other high-profile individuals.

As to how actual verification will work, it seems that Twitter will look to see if an official channel of the person in question links to his or her Twitter account from a place like an official website. This is a perfectly logical way to verify accounts, in our opinion. Details are scarce on the full plan, though.

The Verified Accounts program will begin as an experiment this summer and will expand as Twitter gets more feedback. We’re glad to finally see a system in place that will hopefully put an end to impersonators and expensive lawsuits.

They search the internet for content not ads. Especially for Banners - they have a less of 0.5% response. Their days are over. Imagine if you have an Adsense ad looking like the typical Banner with different colors. It will not be profitable.

2. Text ads are better than image ads. Like before, people are more responsive to text than images. In a way it is considered as a part of the online document and is more clickable.

3. No Border ads. One of the best tricks is to erase the borders of Adsense ads and make them, again, having the same color with your website’s background.

4. No other advertisements. The first reason is to be legitimate according to Google’s Rules and the second more practical reason is that you do not want to distract your visitor’s attention and go somewhere else without clicking your Adsense ads.

5. Placement. Even if you have the best Ad, people will not respond if they don’t see it instantly. The best place to see the ad is the top of your web page and the next is aside your document’s text. Visitors will click it more frequently since it will look like your text.

6. Traffic. Try to use legitimate ways of traffic. Some people use Google Adwords and other Pay-per-click search engines. The problem here is to search very carefully for the right niche and keywords in order to make your campaigns profitable. Google has entered the sometimes controversial arena of behaviour-based advertising. It has launched a system that will serve up ads to web users based on their previous online activities. The search giant is offering users the chance to see and edit their profiles and it will also offer them the choice to opt out of the service. But privacy campaigners are outraged by the move, with Privacy International calling for a parliamentary enquiry. The trial service launches on YouTube and Google from 11 March but advertisers will not be able to display advertisements until April. Initially a handful of advertisers will be invited to take part. The system uses a cookie - a small piece of text that lives inside a web browser - to track users as they visit different websites that show ads through its AdSense program. Users will be assigned to categories based on the content of the pages they visit.

“If a user is a keen traveller and visits lots of travel sites, Google could show them more travel-related ads,” the search giant said in a statement. “We believe that ads are a valuable source of information that can connect people to products, services and ideas that interest them. By making ads more relevant and improving the connection between advertisers and our users, we can create more value,” it said. But Simon Davies, head of Privacy International, has his doubts. “Google might well hype their targeting system as a boon to pet owners, but the reality is that the service will track just about everything you do and everything you’re interested in, no matter how personal or sensitive. Some privacy campaigners believe Google should have offered its advertising service on an opt-in rather than an opt-out basis. “The cookie doesn’t show up any personally identifiable information so that is why we think opt-out is the right way to go,” said a Google spokesman. Information on YouTube , such as the videos people have been watching, will “be factored into” the system, said the spokesman.

Like most Americans, I use Google's search engine several times a day without so much as a second thought. It was only in 2007 that my company's relationship with Google, Inc. temporarily escalated to that of a full-fledged customer, when Think Computer Corporation became yet another a Google AdWords advertiser. (AdWords advertisements appear on the right side of the main Google search results.) Sadly, the several ad campaigns we tried during this brief experiment failed miserably to bring in any new revenue, and so I personally went back to being just another user of Google's search service -- at least until March, 2008. That's when my company signed up for the flip side of Google's advertising juggernaut: AdSense. In anticipation of a new product, Think had acquired a brand new domain name that was unexpectedly receiving a high volume of internet traffic. Instead of paying Google for Think's ads, I thought it might make more sense for Think to get paid for displaying Google's.

Everything went according to plan until 11:00 A.M. on December 9, 2008. With a single click, a faceless Google employee decided that Think Computer Corporation's membership in the AdSense program "posed a significant risk to our AdWords advertisers," and the account was disabled with no warning. Trying to sign into the AdSense management site brought not the familiar user interface, with its limited account payment records and reports (including what Google currently owed Think, which amounted to approximately $721.00), but the following unhelpful statement, and nothing more:

Web Directories emerged to counter the seemingly vast inaccuracies of search engines. However, web directories were soon full of irrelevant and spam websites. A new breed of web directory was then formed: human community edited web directories. This form is not perfect. It is subject to the failings and whimsy of human editors. However, several directories exist which are committed to quality. One of those I believe is Seoweb2.

Using Seoweb2

Seoweb2 is arranged like any other directory. There is a main list of basic subjects which are then broken down into sub-categories. Users can browse through each category and find lists of websites. In fact, I am using Seoweb2 to find quality websites to review.

Each listing includes the name of the website, a link to the web site and up to a 35 word description of the website. The nice thing about Seoweb2 is that by and large the descriptions of the website are helpful and accurate. This reflects highly upon the editors.

Next to each listing is a chart which indicates whether the website provides audio, chat, downloads, is an editor site, games, membership, shopping and/or video. Each site is also given an editor ranking of 1,2 or 3 bars. The rankings are pretty subjective. It says more about a site that it has been included in the directory then that it has a certain ranking.

Submitting to Seoweb2

To submit a site to Seoweb2, The are Free Submit And Paid Feat and that does not guarantee inclusion into the directory. The fee is nonrefundable. The nonrefundable fee makes webmasters think twice about submitting. The essential question to ask is: is a website of quality and value? If it is, chances are it wil be accepted.

Webmasters need to follow the guidelines and be willing to abide by the Terms of Service.

With a focus on elegant simplicity, Zenbe provides many sweet shortcuts but also shows quirks and omissions in others. The spam filter is good, but it would be great if IMAP access was possible for all folders (not just the inbox).
