Stop acting like you’re not.

If you’re making more than 100k/anum and you’re a professional athlete you should not be locking out. There is no state in this country that a person can not live comfortably on that amount, more so if it’s a two income household.

Once upon a time it would have been unheard of for someone to (hypothetically speaking of course) land in the middle of a scandal, deny it, and then reap the benefits of the additional attention.

Those days have long passed us by. Hollywood is now notorious for scandals that are timed with the next big push in a person’s career. Now, whether they orchestrate the scandal themselves or it happens entirely by coincidence… over, and over again… One valuable lesson has not been learned by the masses.

Keep your business life and private life separate.

Because you know what else Hollywood is notorious for? Failed relationships.

The ability to realize that you can unravel just as quickly as you can heal is also a key part of being a man. Every man has within himself the ability to discover what comes easy and what is difficult. find these things out and seek to rectify your shortcomings or at least acknowledge them.

It’s easy to assume that everything we put into our bodies is good for us. After all, aren’t food and beverage companies subject to the requirements and bylaws of our federal government? Everything that is put out should be safe to ingest. This might be true except if you take in too much of anything it can be dangerous to your body’s balance. So don’t fall for every new fad or piece of information that comes through, simply don’t over-consume anything and you’ll be quite alright.

This Christmas

Ah the holidays. A time for cheer, egg nog, and warm nights by the fireplace.

Most of the important things have already been decided this year; gifts, decorations, making dinner or traveling to someone else’s house. That was actually one of the nice things about getting older. There was a lot less shuffling around. The holidays were less about quantity of people seen, and more about the quality of the time spent seeing people.

But that’s not to say that there were not still complex decisions to be made. For instance, they had not yet decided where they’d be going for dinner, only that they wouldn’t be at home. Everyone associates the holidays with family togetherness, but most people also like to entertain. The two concepts are mutually exclusive. For someone to entertain, others have to attend. Too many entertaining and the group becomes fractured.

Who’s event then, is most important to attend?

These were his thoughts as the afternoon wore on and the evening’s festivities approached. There really should be some system of deciding that was both equitable and automatic. One not controlled by the emotions of the moment. He was reminded of the phrase “nothing works, unless you work”. All this thinking on his own would get him no where.

As he went to find his spouse, he realized the approach he should take was pretty obvious.

WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP?

This is what you would do.
Holiday gatherings are closely related to the home. You could even go so far s to say they are an extension of the home. While you’re the figurehead of your home, your partner is the de facto leader of the home. This means the decision is largely out of your hands. Chances are all the necessary communications have already taken place, so anything you might want to contribute to the conversation is more for the sake of conversation and making sure your thoughts are heard, rather than being of any actual influence. That’s just the way it is.

You would handle it like this.

In your house you believe in fairplay. Spending time with one side of the family on one holiday means spending time with the other side of the family the next time. You don’t like the travel, but you don’t like the hurt feelings more. You’ve found that everyone believes in joy and togetherness right up until their idea of it is threatened. Then all bets are off. So you’d rather play Switzerland and stay neutral as much as possible. Your partner may not particularly like it, but this is one areas where you feel the need to stand your ground.

Personal Responsibility

In all of his working years he had never been through an economic downturn this bad. Not only were they laying off entire units to keep their statements in the black, but they were restructuring so often they could barely keep up with client demands. It was hard to tell if the Board was thinking clearly when they handed down decisions, or if they were being pushed around by the emotions of their shareholders.

It seemed like every morning he pulled into the parking lot there were fewer and fewer cars. Fewer economical cars that is. The executives who measured their self-worth in dollars had remained largely untouched through all of this. The “luxury row” as the line of reserved spots was routinely called, was still intact. His was the only one that didn’t fit the mold. Not that he didn’t have a nice car that was more expensive than the average commuter; he did and he made no excuses about it. It just wasn’t a vehicle that made any assumptions about where he lived or how much money he made. As pulled into the parking lot he put on his game face so he could greet the dismal levels of morale that permeated every office and corridor in the place.

He smiled, he waved, he shook hands, he patted backs and stopped to chat wherever it looked like people needed a friendly ear as he made his way to his office. He never felt more like a politician than he did at this moment. There was nothing in his words that would make it all better for people who were watching coworkers lose jobs at a company they’d given years to.

In his office he couldn’t get off to a good start on the day’s tasks. There were a number of people who’d already been let go that had started at the same time as him. The difference was in the fact that he had been able to outshine them, securing positions and opportunities that would eventually lead to his currently protected status. The knowledge made his actions feel hollow. If he was feeling this way, there was no doubt in his mind that other areas of the company were grinding to a halt as well.

He recalled a scene from a movie he didn’t quite like. Jerry Maguire. An agent fed up with how things worked in his industry, he wrote a manifesto of sorts on how the game should be played. The man started typing. What became a short email meant to boost resolve about the changes being made and the future of the company became an explanation for his next move and the silent call to action for every executive in the company. He was going to take a massive pay cut and lead by example.

*cue up company wide listserve*

*Send*

It took maaaaaybe four minutes before his personal line began lighting up and his intercom buzzed. He answered as if none the wiser when his assistant asked if he was serious. All he said was that he rarely ever joked about money and to not be distracted from his day’s work.

As the president of the company stepped into his office without so much as a knock, he turned off the speakers to his computer so the sound of incoming emails wouldn’t be a distraction from their conversation. This was going to be fun.

“Just what in the hell are you doing? You don’t have the power to renegotiate salaries here. I don’t know what’s gotten into you but reducing your salary to zero isn’t going to automatically fix the budget, and it’s not going to win you any friends out there or upstairs.”

WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP?

This is how you would explain things.
Life isn’t a popularity contest. Not really anyway. Life is about the decisions you make and the values you uphold. That’s all this is when you get right down to it; a question of values, and morals. Being on top means leading from the front, not sacrificing others to maintain your own quality of life. Being successful doesn’t have to mean being a vampire. Not if you’re doing it right.

You would handle it like this.

Execs have the luxury of protecting themselves before anything bad happens. If a bomb were to go off tomorrow they’d be able to prepare today. But not everyone out there. If the message from the top is solidarity, sacrifice, and loyalty we should be seeing that from the top first, right? Even if the pay cut doesn’t stick, I’m now more like them and less like what they think we are. Perceptions can change realities.
