Who doesn't love a great first kiss. For episodes, seasons, in some cases, many years, fans have been waiting for that one special moment between their two favorite characters. The chemistry is usually there from the start. When that first kiss happens, at that moment, you don't care what comes next. Instant gratification.

Here are some of TVs best first kisses chosen by the SpoilerTV staff. In no particular order.

#1 House & Cuddy - House MD

From the first season on you could sense that there was something going on between House and Cuddy. What, is not exactly clear from the start. Is it a love-to-hate-you thing, pure lust or is there some deeper underlying love and respect? Each season the tension and chemistry increases. Before that first kiss we are treated to some really great episodes that shed more light on what House and Cuddy are actually feeling and thinking.

In season 2 episode 3 ‘Humpty Dumpty’ we learn that House and Cuddy have a long history of knowing each other. They met when he was in medical school and she was an undergraduate. Then in episode 23 of the same season, ‘Who’s your Daddy’, we see a House who is very much involved with Cuddy’s fertility journey, almost to the point where he wants to father her child but he backs down. House realizes it's the wrong moment and reminds her that relationships should be started between people who like each other, and that's not him. In one of my favorite season 3 episodes (14) ‘Insensitive', House practically stalks Cuddy while she’s on a date. He’s completely unable to hide his jealousy. Cuddy asks House straight out if he likes her. House denies it, unconvincingly. Even Cuddy’s date notices their chemistry and attraction and walks away from dating Cuddy. From there on we get more and more hints of mutual love, respect and physical attraction.

It’s not until season 5, episode 6 ‘Joy’ that we see House act upon his love for Cuddy and we get a first (not hallucinated) kiss. Cuddy‘s potential adoption of a baby girl falls through in the last minute when the birth mother decides to keep the baby. Devastated by this news we see Cuddy at her home, sitting on the floor of her nursery, crying. The doorbell rings and it’s House on her doorstep. House comes in and tells her she would have been a great mother, but Cuddy gets angry with him, pointing out that when she was getting a baby, he told her she would suck as a mother, but after she lost the baby, he told her she'd be a great mother. She asks him why he has to negate everything, to which he responds, "I don't know." After a moment of silence, they kiss each other passionately. After a pause, House says goodnight and leaves.

Huddy’s all over the world rejoiced.

#2 Mulder & Scully - X-Files

Sure, there are a couple ways of ringing in the new year, but none are quite like watching Mulder and Scully’s first kiss, which takes place just after midnight on New Year’s Day, 2000, in the episode aptly titled ‘Millennium’. Their years of close partnership and flirty banter culminated in a soft kiss where Mulder tells Scully: “The world didn’t end”. It’s symbolic, marking not only the beginning of a new year but more importantly, a new budding romance between the FBI agents. And it only took them 7 years!

#3 Noah & Joanne - Nobody Wants This

When people say “Rom-Com is back” I need them to reference Noah and Joanne from Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. With Noah being from a very religious family and Joanne very much not, there is no way they should work and yet, they do. From the minute they met there was an obvious instant connection — which becomes so evident when Joanne agrees to meet with Noah, as friends, to clear up a misunderstanding. Once that’s all done, the duo goes on a walk where they come to realize just being friends can’t be an option. Pointing out that they’ve never kissed, Joanne suggests a goodbye kiss. Noah is game and the two share a passionate kiss right there on the sidewalk. There was nothing “goodbye” about it.

#4 Blair & Chuck - Gossip Girl

Sometimes, the most iconic pairings are the ones you don’t see coming. In the first season of the original (and best) Gossip Girl, the central love story was supposed to be between Lonely Boy, Dan, and Golden Girl, Serena. The different worlds and opposite attract tropes were meant to be the draw. Instead, in “Victor/Victrola,” sociopaths-in-training Chuck and Blair steal the title of epic pairing. Their first kiss comes after a night when Blair finally dumps her Prince Charming, Nate Archibald, and looks to escape to Chuck Bass’ new burlesque club, Victrola. Blair watches the dancers on stage and tells Chuck that “she has moves”. Chuck, thinking he knows the prim, proper princess of the UES, challenges her to go and literally sheds her uptight persona. Blair jumps up, joins the other women on stage, and begins to dance, enjoying the attention.

After a lifetime of living in the shadow of Serena, she feels seen. Chuck looks at her in awe, as if he’s discovered something new. After, in Chuck’s limo, he is dumbstruck and tells her as much. She looks at him, and she, too, has discovered something. He tells her she was “amazing up there,” and that’s all she needs to hear to move closer and initiate a kiss. Chuck says, “Are you sure?” before the two share their first kiss with Sum 41’s “With Me” playing. An iconic pairing is born.

#5 Alec Lightwood & Magnus Bane - Shadowhunters

When it comes to first kisses, there's nothing quite like having the boy you're secretly attracted to crashing your wedding day, and then waiting without saying a word, giving you a chance to make the choice to step away from the altar, meet him halfway and then actually pull him in for a kiss by the lapels! That is exactly what happened in season 1, episode 12 of “Shadowhunters” which was so aptly titled “Malec” and of course the boy in question just so happens to be three hundred plus years old warlock - Magnus Bane, you, Alec Lightwood are a Shadowhunter and this epic first kiss is set to the perfect soundtrack, “War of Hearts” by Ruelle!

ABC’s The Rookie has delivered its fair share of twists, turns, and unforgettable moments, but few have captivated fans as much as the simmering chemistry between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). #7 Angela & Tony - Who's The Boss

Many TV shows make the fans endure seasons of anticipation before their favorite couple gets to lock lips for the first time. Who’s the Boss? spared fans that agony, delivering an unforgettable moment in its very first season. Angela and Tony may have been tipsy, but their kiss was packed with charm, spontaneity, and undeniable chemistry, making it all the more magical. By this point, Tony had been living with Angela as her housekeeper for some time, and their relationship had blossomed into a warm and delightfully playful friendship. Returning home from a night out, Tony finds Angela celebrating her birthday with friends. Once the guests leave, he insists on baking her a birthday cake. What follows is a hilarious and chemistry-filled interaction as the two laugh, throw flour at each other, and chase one another around the kitchen. When their bodies accidently collide, the pull between them is electric and impossible to ignore.

With the added courage of a little tipsiness, their first kiss feels inevitable. It’s definitely one of my all-time favorite first smooches on a TV show! What’s even more impressive is how Who’s the Boss? managed to sustain the sizzling chemistry and the “will they, won’t they” tension for years – despite the couple sharing several more kisses along the way.

#8 Jane & Lisbon - The Mentalist

Even after getting rid of Red John, Jane had a hard time accepting his feelings for Lisbon, but ended up confessing them on a plane when she was about to leave to start a new life with her boyfriend, which got him arrested. And though he apparently fails to convince her, she eventually visits him while he is detained. This scene is very restrained in terms of their expressions since the two speak in a very low tone and barely move, as if they don't want to alter or damage the moment. Finally, when Lisbon asks Jane to repeat what he told her on the plane, he prefers to demonstrate with a kiss.

#9 Oliver & Josh - Brilliant Minds

Oliver has, for most of his adult life, put his work before his own personal needs. He always made an excuse to not step into the dating game — to him, his patients were all that mattered. You can say the same goes for Josh, but he at least tried the whole “dating apps” thing. These two haven’t gotten along in the beginning but the more they worked together the closer they became. It was only professional at first, but anyone with eyes can see something growing between them. When a patient told Oliver that he and Josh would make a good pair, he started to see his connection with Josh as something more. Could this pairing work? Oliver finally decided to take a chance—he walks over to Josh and plants one on him…after the initial shock wears off, Josh kisses him back. FINALLY!

#10 Lorelai & Luke - Gilmore Girls

After different moments in which it’s clear where Lorelai and Luke's relationship is headed, at the opening of the Dragonfly Inn, Jason, Lorelai's ex, arrives to complicate things, although perhaps it rather solves them, since it’s thanks to this that Luke ends up confessing his feelings to her. As a result of this, they have a heated discussion and though there is a brief moment in which they look surprised by each other, as if they had certain doubts about the step they are going to take, they finally give in and kiss. The funniest thing is that, when they are kissing, they are interrupted by Kirk, whom Luke had promised to help with his night terrors, so they have to leave their feelings for later.

#11 Ben Weston & Ciara Brady - Days of our Lives

TV’s best first kiss, in my opinion, was played by Robert Scott Wilson and Victoria Konefal, as supercouple Ben Weston and Ciara Brady, on the Daytime soap opera, Days of Our Lives. Their love story was breathtaking because it was the most forbidden love of all time. Ben Weston was a known bad boy/serial killer and Ciara was the daughter of one of the greatest super couples in daytime, Bo Brady and Hope Williams Brady, who worked for the police force and were apart of the very prominent families in a town called Salem. Ben and Ciara’s paths crossed, and while they began to talk and have conversation after he saved her/took care of her after a motorcycle accident, and after he had to convince her that he wasn’t going to hurt her, they began to slowly but surely fall in love.

The first kiss happened because she was fighting her feelings for him. However, he made it well known how he felt about her, and after he professed his feelings for her, she was beyond smitten and before he sensually leaned in for the kiss, he gave her this look as if to ask her if it was OK for him to go full speed in for the kiss and she was so smitten, the look and lean that she gave him back had yes all over it, and that’s when they kissed so sensual and sweet to where she dropped the helmet she had in her hand. I literally watched that scene hundreds of times and I will never get tired of watching their epic first kiss.

#12 Monica & Chandler - Friends

Determining Monica and Chandler’s first kiss is somewhat tricky. While their actual first kiss is revealed in a flashback in season 7, the first lip-lock we got to witness happens in season 5, episode 1, right after the gang returns from Ross’ chaotic wedding in London. Monica and Chandler had agreed their fling would end once they got back to the US, but it’s clear neither is ready to call it quits. Chandler bursts into Monica’s apartment, exclaiming, “I’m still on London time! Does that count?” Monica eagerly replies, “Oh, that counts!” and they dive into a deep, passionate kiss that sent the live audience into a frenzy.

This moment is the beginning of one of TV’s most beloved relationships. It’s no surprise that many fans consider “Mondler” to be THE relationship of the show. I know this might be a controversial opinion, but compared to Monica and Chandler’s dynamic, Ross and Rachel’s on-again, off-again romance feels almost lackluster.

#13 Evan Buckley & Tommy Kinard - 911

100 episodes. 7 seasons. That's how long it took for Evan “Buck” Buckley to kiss Tommy Kinard; it wasn't until the previous episode of season 7 that Tommy returned to our screens after having guest starred on “911” several seasons ago, but once he did, he fit in seamlessly with the story - and with Buck, the two of them embarked on a journey together that kicked off with a beautiful first kiss! Picture this - it's night-time in Buck's apartment, Tommy's showed up to talk to him about Eddie getting injured and even though it starts off with Tommy standing miles away, the more they talk and things come out into the open, the more you start to see the two of them gravitating towards in each other, leading up to Tommy making the first move and kissing Buck, complete with tucking his fingers under his chin! swoons The 100th episode was Buck's story about discovering he's bisexual and having a boyfriend, and however their story ended, it began with a scene that will go down in television history of first kisses!

#14 Stiles Stilinski & Lydia Martin - Teen Wolf

The Beacon Hills duo shared their first, and somewhat unconventional kiss in an effort for Lydia to calm Stiles during a panic attack. It was a highly anticipated moment for fans, especially since Stiles had been open about his crush on Lydia since the pilot episode. Even Stiles and Lydia didn’t know how deep their connection was, not until later in the episode where Lydia was recruited to help Stiles as he would need an “emotional tether”. Lydia chalks up her impromptu decision to advice she once read, but it was evident that there were sparks between the two.

#15 Eliza Scarlet & William Wellington - Miss Scarlet and the Duke

Well, I’m kind of cheating here as this image above is not really their first kiss. However, to me, if felt like their first kiss. Eliza and William go way back. They’ve been in each other’s lives since their early teens. Eliza's late father Henry saved William from the London streets after arriving from Glasgow as a child. Eliza’s father later mentored him as he trained as a policeman. As a result, William looked up to Henry as a father figure. As a 16- and 17-year-old they shared a fleeting kiss while harboring a mutual crush that lasted decades.

In the 4th season fans finally get what they’ve been hoping for since the start. Years of obvious love and admiration is transformed in a perfect kiss. Unfortunately, their long-awaited first kiss ends on a sad note. William has decided to take a job elsewhere as he can’t be around Eliza without being with her. It’s already known that actor Stuart Martin will not be seen in the upcoming 5th season and Eliza is getting a new male counterpart. Nevertheless, fans are desperately hoping Stuart Martin will return in season 6 and the show will give Eliza and William their happily ever after.

This is the part of the year where TV offerings start to diminish, but not this year. Thanks to unusual CoVid-19 filming schedules shows that would have normally been part of the primary season roster got pushed to summer. That's great for all of us because it means we are getting high-quality performances non-stop. This month saw some incredibly strong performances delivered. Also, since some amazing movies were released in July on streaming services, I wanted to remind everyone that as long as the movies did not have a theatrical release and were strictly released on a streaming platform, the performers from those movies are eligible as well under the streaming guidelines that says any performer on a movie or TV show that drops entirely on a streaming service is eligible for 2 months. We have a ton of amazing potential nominees this month, so it'll be fun to see who makes it to the voting round in a few days.

Origin of the Teen Drama

What is a teen drama? A teen drama is classified as a television show with dramatized elements as they pertain to adolescents. Beverly Hills, 90210 popularized the term and became one of the first to air in prime time. It's status is iconic and it has cemented a long-lasting legacy, even spawning a reboot that launched on The CW in 2008. Prior to BH 90210, depictions of teenagers and their lifestyles were left to established stereotypes in situational comedies and sitcoms. Aaron Spelling was one of the first to create a show that actually centered around teen drama in soap operatic fashion.

Post-90210, the genre split into two distinct directions: shows centering around small town life and more realistic depictions of teenagers growing up in middle-class america where wealth is an anomaly and teen dramas where wealth and glamor was a fixture. Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill occupied the grounded stories while The OC and Gossip Girl followed in 90210's footsteps and took us on a tour through the Upper East Side and Orange County. The OC actually had the unique approach of taking elements from each of these sub-genres. While the show took place in Orange County the audience often saw the rich teenage lifestyle through the eyes of the show's protagonist, Ryan Atwood, a kid from Chino with nary a cent to his name. The OC was considered essential viewing while it aired, critically praised for its sharp writing and musical acuity. After The OC's run was cut short, the showrunners tried their hand at the genre again with Gossip Girl, a show that built its legacy off of the phrase “guilty pleasure.”

Amidst the behemoths there were smaller, yet still notable, shows who now boast large cult followings. My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks were critical darlings but failed to find an audience when they debuted. Far more gritty in nature, they strived for more realism than their oft-melodramatic counterparts.

Another popular teen drama worth mentioning is Canadian giant, Degrassi. Degrassi tackled every hot-button topic you could think of its adaptability through the years has allowed it to chug along for over twenty years in different iterations. Not only did the show master the art of telling imperative stories surrounding social issues in a way that was accessible and not preachy, but the show has always had lovable characters and lots of heart that translated well to international audiences. Its longevity can certainly be attributed to its ability to evolve with every generation, adapting relevant and conscientious storylines for every new crop of teens.

New Era of Teen Drama

Over the past few years we’ve seen a real definitive shift from grounded, realistic teen dramas to genre-heavy or just plain dark teen shows. Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why, Teen Wolf, while all still dealing with teenage drama like love triangles and things of that nature, also tackle more serious plotlines often involving murder, torture, and sometimes outright horror. Of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer predates all of them. Whedon took the monster-of-the-week formula established by The X-Files and hybridized it to create a much beloved instant classic. Buffy’s impact has trickled down into almost every modern day sci-fi or horror show on television. It’s effect is far-reaching, even beyond the genre itself. Those musical episodes we all love so much? We probably wouldn’t have gotten them if Buffy hadn’t done it so well first.

The Vampire Diaries is one of the most significant spiritual successors of Buffy. TVD featured a struggling male werewolf, a broody vampire and a bad boy vampire with centuries of history between them, an action girl heroine with a witchy best friend and a morally grey/sometimes evil female counterpart to our main protagonist. Of course, The Vampire Diaries went on to establish a legacy of its own (a second spin-off of the show will premiere this fall) but it is worth discussing its roots and the interesting ways in which television shows build off one another.

I will say I do sometimes miss just a good old-fashioned high school drama, I’m hoping that All American will fill that void for me and maybe open the door for more shows akin to One Tree Hill or Friday Night Lights. It seems like television trends come and go and it’s been a while since the CW picked up this many teen dramas that weren’t in the superhero universe. Which itself, is another interesting take on teenage dramas if you think about it. In recent years films like Easy A, Mean Girls, She's the Man, Freaky Friday, are far and few between but we have seen more diverse and dramatized coming-of-age stories, movies like Moonlight, Lady Bird, and The Florida Project prove how impactful and important these stories can be. We're finally moving in a direction where films are more diverse. It's also worth noting that many coming-of-age stories come from superhero shows and movies now. Caped crusaders are clearly hear to stay if Marvel and DC's box office price tag is any indication. You look at shows like Marvel's Runaways, Freeform's Cloak and Dagger or even the film Spiderman: Homecoming and start to see a pattern take shape.

There is a clear migration within the genre to create more adult-oriented stories and themes and intertwine them with teenage lives. I think this can be a good thing, it can make hard topics more palatable for younger audiences, but there are criticisms to make too. How much darkness do we need to see young people on-screen going through to get a point across? A question I'll be discussing in the next section.

What this Evolution Means for the Future

One way that teen dramas have definitely evolved for the better is in terms of diversity. Most of the older shows were made up of predominantly white casts and centered around wealthy teenagers and lacked positive LGBTQ+ representation (though Dawson's Creek did feature the first on-screen romantic kiss between two men, instances such as that one were rare). Modern teen shows integrate more diverse casts and generally feature teenagers from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic classes, although we still have a long way to go both on screen and particularly behind the scenes as well. Netflix has show’s like On my Block, Degrassi: Next Class, and Everything Sucks, Hulu has East Los High, and the CW has this fall’s upcoming All American and Charmed, both featuring predominantly non-white characters in leading roles. These are small steps in the right direction, as there is still a lot of growth that needs to occur where diversity is concerned (particularly when it comes to directors and writing teams) but it is miles ahead of where teen dramas were in the late 90s/early 2000s.

The OC, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, BH 90210, etc., while iconic in their own right, were not accessible or relatable to a vast majority due to the very small pool of teenagers they actually represented. Many teens had a hard time relating to some of the older shows which often only represented a small portion of the population in an unattainable lifestyle. Everyone should be able to see themselves represented positively on television in meaningful storylines and it is my hope that television continues to diversify (on-screen and off) so that we may see a much wider range of stories not only depicted, but also handled with the gravity they should be.

These shows have an obligation to be pragmatic and diligent in the messages they’re sending to younger audiences. 13 Reasons Why drew quite a bit of ire for its glamorization of suicide and its second season featured a shockingly graphic sexual assault scene. I would never say that teen dramas shouldn’t tackle difficult topics but I do think they have an obligation to handle them with more sophistication and grace. There is rarely a reason for rape scenes to be depicted in such explicit and graphic nature, particularly when involving young characters and aimed towards a younger skewing demographic. Alluding to it is just as powerful and sometimes even more impactful. Sexual assault is always a tricky topic to tackle on television and I think it is imperative that teen dramas, in particular, learn the best way to handle it. We live in the era of the #MeToo movement and long overdue scrutinization of our society's rape culture, particularly in Hollywood. Sometimes these scenes can be tactless and at its worse, debasing or used as a troubling audience titillation tactic.

In this era of peak tv there is a drive to be darker, grittier, and edgier. Compare the shows I mentioned in beginning of this article with modern teen shows like Riverdale. There is a clear difference in how these stories are being told. It's great to see teen dramas taking risks and incorporating other genres like fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and the like, however, sometimes it gets exhausting to watch yet another show where the marketing revolves around impending character deaths. Shock value deaths do not necessarily equate to amazing storytelling and are often more indicative of lazy writing. Personally, I blame the effects of shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones (both shows I enjoy but that have changed the game in terms of how character deaths are treated - particularly for major characters), for this current craze of core character deaths where writers seem to think a show is only as good as its most shocking death or twist. As someone who loves YA and teen dramas, I don’t need to see my favorite characters tortured week after week, especially when it is often teenage girls who bear the brunt of the damage. It was writing tactics such as these that created the tired “bury your gays” trope and often culminate in the brutal deaths of non-white characters. Look at The 100 for examples of both. That’s not to say these shows aren’t good or enjoyable, all of them were successful in their own right, but they are indicative of a strange urgency to see which showrunner can devastate and break their fan's hearts the most. Obviously I don't mean that deaths should never occur on television but I do feel as if many of them are done to actually create meaningful storylines or just to create easy, sloppy surprises and "twists."

All I'm saying is when I watched shows like Gossip Girl I wasn't holding my breath every week hoping Blair Waldorf didn't get brutally stabbed by a vampire or murdered by the town's weekly serial killer. A little agony goes a long way.

Of course, none of this means I dislike our current age of teen dramas, some of them are actually some of my all-time favorites and I quite like horror and supernatural television. The genre is evolving and changing to adapt to the zeitgeist as most television trends do. Monitoring these trends is an important aspect of studying the medium. Television is a constantly evolving creature, it’s fascinating to watch it grow. Which direction will teen dramas go in next, will the grounded shows of yesteryear make their comeback? Maybe we’ll go even further into genre-fare into surrealism a la Twin Peaks. Riverdale certainly takes some inspiration from there and has developed into a bonkers, campy, sometimes dream-like show of its own.

This fall we’ve got a full slate of new teen-centered dramas with Charmed, All American, Legacies, and mid-season’s Roswell reboot. Also The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which promises to be chock full of magical mayhem and horror and possibly one of the darkest teen dramas we’ve seen yet. I know that I, for one, will be watching all of them, eager to see what comes next.

Throwback Thursday - Gossip Girl - Pilot - "Xoxo, Joel"

Throwback Thursday, a weekly article in which we look back at our favourite TV episodes from over the years.

It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years since Gossip Girl first hit our screens. It's a show that many of my generation were hooked on, and a show which is still today recommended amongst friends (but I mean, come on - why haven't people watched the show already?). I can vividly remember that Gossip Girl was the first show I ever binge watched, simply because I joined the fandom a little late into the show. I began buying the box-sets when season three or four was airing, and continued to binge on the show until the final season, when I decided to watch live, for whatever reason. A few weeks ago, my flatmate was watching some episodes, randomly with a friend, and after deciding to stay for "just one episode", I was still there a few hours later. It reminded me of just how amazing and dramatic the show had been, and so it made sense to pick Gossip Girl for my second Throwback Thursday, especially as the 10th anniversary is fast approaching, this Fall. With this in mind, I recently rewatched the Pilot, and this article is my musings and thoughts about such. (Trigger warning: this article mentions themes of rape and drug-abuse).

who actually are the protagonists / antagonists?

One of the things which most caught my attention during the Pilot were the actions of Chuck. Everyone knows he's the rogue, the bad-boy, etc but I'd forgotten that his behaviour in the Pilot is so inexcusable - he's shown sexually assaulting both Serena and Jenny, and so it's not a far stretch to refer to him as a rapist, as many online have done so. But Chuck is a fan favourite character though, he can't be a rapist as well? Unfortunately the two can work in collaboration, or so it would seem. The internet seems conflicted between whether he really should be condemned for being / is a rapist and those who continue to defend the character and reaffirm how he's some ideal bad-boy with a heart that every girl should want. The fact Chuck acts in such a way yet still has a strong allegiance of fans perhaps says a lot about our society, as well as the show, but it also raises important and interesting questions about characters in the wider TV, Film and Fiction worlds. Let's start with some of the other Gossip Girl characters though ...

Is it appropriate to favouritise someone like Juliet?

Knowing that Chuck shouldn't be idolised the way he is, yet still remains so, made me think of my own favourite characters on the show - one being Juliet. The antagonist during the first half of season four, Juliet was out for vengeance following some family issues. This vengeance culminated in her drugging Serena, something I had completely forgotten. The rest of Juliet's actions are somewhat justifiable in the grand scheme of her plans, and of course, unlike a selfish Chuck who sexually assaults merely for pleasure, Juliet's behaviour is a little more complicated considering she's somewhat a victim herself - not that being a victim justifies drugging someone, obviously. So, I'm left wondering whether I should no longer be able to sympathise and love Juliet whatsoever, or whether it's possible to do so for a character whilst also acknowledging a pretty serious, immoral and sinister action they committed?

The supposed protagonists of the shows aren't exactly moral idols either: Blair frequently blackmails characters and generally bullies others; Dan starts a blog to torment and shame his peers, stalking some would say; Serena took her best-friend's boyfriend's virginity, amongst other shady behaviour; and Nate slept with his girlfriend's bestie. Of course, none of these characters sexually assaulted or raped anyone, but still the question looms: is it ever acceptable to like an antagonist or character who murders, drugs, rapes, blackmails, stalks, assaults, bullies other characters etc? Is it ever wrong to argue "but it's just a TV character"?

Obviously, people can be redeemed, both in life and on TV, but I wonder whether the show made much effort to do so, particularly in regards to Chuck. From my memory, he never really represents for sexually assaulting Jenny, except for a brief apology - and ultimately he goes on to take her virginity, then shunning her immediately after so he can propose to Blair. Yeah, Chuck continued to show misogyny towards women, and it suggests there was no redemption - despite popular opinion and support for the character. In some ways I appreciate a show which blurs the boundaries between good and bad, as Gossip Girl does somewhat. Life isn't so simple and so shows shouldn't be, and one dimensional characters or shows aren't something I enjoy - which is part of the reason why I often prefer the bitch or antagonist characters of shows as they tend to have more depth and layers than their counterparts. It's part of the reason I enjoyed HBO's Girls so much, because the characters were flawed, annoying yet human. Did Gossip Girl perhaps blur the boundaries a little too much (or at least allow people to do so)? Possibly. There's a difference between liking (yet also disliking) a character who's selfish, irritating and whiny, like Girl's Hannah Horvath, and liking a character who constantly mistreats women, I'd say. The likes of Emily Thorne from ABC's Revenge also comes to mind, as viewers as supposed to root for her vengeance, even when people get emotionally and physically hurt along the way. Surely we should consider a character's motivations before writing them off as an antagonist etc? Not that this would excuse Chuck, who has no justification for sexually assaulting girls other than self-pleasure. It's a complicated issue, and one which I suppose we could spend a lifetime debating. Each to their own, but perhaps Chuck, and TV characters in general, need a deeper evaluation and analysis before being hailed as idols by fans.

the victim of the show (?)

Enough about the dark side of the show though, and moving towards a less selfish character. Nate has long been one of my personal favourites on the show - he was never a particularly bad or immoral character (though he had his moments) yet the show never seemed to give him much of a chance. In the Pilot he's a passive young man who's under the influence of others, and from my memory, this continued throughout the series. He was even passive in terms of plotlines, I would say, and in the show's finale, Nate is the only leading character to not be paired off. It always felt to me as though he had an equal share in the show, as if the writers perhaps saw him merely as a tool for other characters (and some eye candy for viewers). I wonder whether had the popular pairings been different, would Nate had received some better arcs (about him, rather than connected to someone else)? From the Pilot, it seems as though he's the lead male - that Blair and Serena could fight over him. The ultimate love-triangle, I suppose. Things soon changed though, and the only love triangle people cared about became Chuck - Blair - Dan (add Serena in for the love square aspect and Nate is completely shaded). #JusticeForNate anyone?

ensemble power

Nobody ever seems to like Vanessa - except me!

Although the Pilot focuses almost exclusively on Dan, Serena, Blair, Nate and Chuck, it does present some of the ensemble players like Eric, Lily and Rufus. To me, the ensemble were always a huge part of the show and many of the non-leads were the most interesting and likeable of characters. Vanessa, though unpopular, was someone I quite liked. Juliet, as I mentioned. Eric was equally someone who deserved more screen-time, and let's not forget Georgina, to name just a few. I definitely need to rewatch the entire show before deciding whether Chuck was (or could even) be redeemed in any way, though from the Pilot, and the articles I've researched, I have significant doubt that he can ever be seen as a hero, protagonist or the like, in my mind again.

living for the drama

I really don't want this article to come across as a critique of the show, not entirely at least. For the most part, it was fantastic. The cast were incredible, the outfits were to die for, and the drama kept us hooked each and every episode. I think secretly everyone wanted just one GG blast in their own life, and I imagine I'm not along in having wanted to go to one of the many fancy parties (masquerade ball, anyone?). It was a show that managed to be sassy, funny, dramatic and heartfelt all in one. For me, the drama of it all was where the show shone above some others - though it did get a little far-fetched at times, of course. The whole Lola / Ivy storyline was, in my opinion, such an interesting watch, as was the Juliet / Ben arc. Similarly, who can forget some of the shady dealings of the van der Woodsen family? Say what you like about the show, but it did drama and storylines well - even if not fair, justice-filled or moral. Makes you wonder whether viewers (or at least writers) want moral storylines, hmm ...

Reunion on the horizon?

This is perhaps the toughest question of all. Gossip Girl has such a special place in my heart for various reasons; it was one of the first shows I ever really engaged with, it was the first show I binged, I was involved in some Gossip Girl groups on Tumblr, and several members of the cast have gone on to become some of my favourite actors/actresses. That being said, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel a little different about the show now. To base such on the Pilot is perhaps naive and unfair though, and so before I completely change (or reassert) my feelings on the show, I think another binge watching is due.
Whether fans will get a 10th anniversary reunion soon is unknown, but I for one wouldn't mind seeing the cast together again, one final time. Right now I feel confused, conflicted and uncertain about the show and characters which I so deeply enjoyed and loved not so long ago; the show was incredible and the drama was entertainment at its best, yet there are those voices saying that it's wasn't done in the most appropriate way (and those voices aren't so easy to dismiss).
