Booth Leaves Nightwing After #21

So, Brett Booth has been teasing being brought into to do some fill in on another title at DC for the past month or so, and today it was announced that he'd be drawing Justice League of America #4 and #5, which is cool. But time spent on JLA means time spent away from Nightwing, as Booth confirmed #21 would be his last.

This sucks. Not hating on Booth or anything, because the couple of JLA issues is a big gig, but man he worked so well on Nightwing, and after Eddy Barrows unable to put together more than two full issues in a row (outside of the first two) it was nice to know a steady artist who fit the title so well would be handling it. It seems like every time Nightwing gets a little momentum, something happens, plans change, etc. Blah. Oh well. Hopefully whoever they get to replace Booth is good, but I have a feeling who we'll get... and I hope I'm not right.

Looking Forward: May 22nd, 2013

Next is the last week of normal comics for the month, then we got some annuals to fill out the 5th Wednesday.

Batman, Incorporated #11: Things are getting down to the wire, but we're just going to have to wait for the conclusion as Chris Burnham writes us an issue where we return to Japan in a visit with Mr. Unknown.
Talon #8: Calvin is DEEEEEEAD. Now he's a true Talon, so who knows what that'll actually mean for him. Expect him to come across the Birds of Prey at the end, though.
Batman - The Dark Knight #20: Mad Hatter has the hots for Batman's girlfriends, and Bruce is gonna be all "AH, HELLZ NO" and kick his ass. Just watch.

Having come back to his newly sublet apartment, Dick finds out that the Joey he's renting it from, isn't exactly out of town, nor is she a he, as he soon finds a woman standing over him with a baseball bat. Dick's new roommate Mike walks in and calms Joey down, who eases up after Mike offers Dick his bed, as he is leaving for work, and figures they'll sort it all out later... Elsewhere, the police find that guy Prankster left with a wolf, missing one arm. Fun!

Well, Jason still doesn't have his memories, and Roy is still pretty pissed about that, demanding that S'aru give Jason his memories back. S'aru asks Roy and Kori to see it from Jason's perspective, showing them both just how shitty Jason's life was, but Roy isn't convinced, bringing up the fact that the three of them had pretty good times, so if Jason just wanted the bad parts gone, why doesn't he remember his friends... Hey Kate, your crazy sister is alive! Surprise! Turns out Chase found her, after it started to come together that Kate was Batwoman. She started looking into anyone who crossed path with Kate, and eventually got in deep into a Religion of Crime stronghold with some DEO agents, were attacked by a surprising amount of cultists, and was the only one to make it out alive. In the aftermath of that fight, Chase came across the sarcophagus that held Beth, and the DEO hasn't even been able to figure out how the thing kept her alive.

Yep, Starling is the traitor, which anyone could predict by her absence from the last few covers, anyone except Black Canary, who kicks herself in the ass for not figuring it out earlier. Turns out Ev and Mr. Freeze are old buddies, but she hasn't turned completely against the Birds, pointing out that the Court of Owls are their ultimate enemy. But, neither Dinah or Batgirl are having any of it, Strix is frozen, and who the hell cares about Condor?

I posed this question on twitter a few nights ago, but I'll be interested to see if the dramatic irony of Barbara's current situation (in that she thinks she killed her brother, yet the audience knows better thanks to Suicide Squad #20) will take away from the emotional beats Gail Simone is trying to hit. Fuck everything about this. Given this series' weird creative switch, I don't even think I can blame Marx on this one, because this wreaks of dumb editorial bullshit. Let's take the most enjoyable character of this book, from issue #1, and have her be BFFs with Mr. Freeze, then turn on the team. Great, just fucking great.

Didio and Van Sciver Give us Bat-Cow

From day one, I've been saying "give me a silent Bat-Cow issue of Batman, Incorporated with Bat-Cow just doing cow stuff." It'd have to be weird and surreal, and given We3, I thought it'd be right up Grant Morrison's alley. All I wanted.

Well, with the announcement of the Batman, Incorporated Special, I get my wish... sort of? DC co-publisher Dan Didio announced that he and artist (hell, he might be writing too?) Ethan Van Sciver will be debuting Bat-Cow's first solo story, finishing up with the pun of "milking this for all its worth."

...

You know, I'm not a Didio hater. But I'm just going to say a simple fact. Dan Didio and Grant Morrison are not the same people. They are in fact, two different people, of different lineage, heritage, and just about everything you could think of. I'll leave it at that.

Batman Inc. Ain't Dead Yet!

Batman, Incoporated's final issue may be hitting in July, but the team will be sticking around for a bit longer with the release of Augusts' Batman, Incorporated Special #1. The anthology will continue the stories of many of the Batman Inc. representatives (who have been sorely missed in this second volume) with stories from creators such as Chris Burnham, Ethan Van Sciver, Dan Didio, Joe Keatinge, and more.

But that's not all, Chris Burnham will be the writer of this month's issue #11, with art by Jorge Lucas, in a story that steps away from the main Leviathan story for a bit to visit Mr. Unknown, aka Batman Japan, in... well, Japan. Given where #10 ended, this might break some momentum, but if this allows Burnham to finish the last two issues by himself, then I'm perfectly fine with that.
