The science of optical illusions

Take a look at the squares above. Top one is darker, right? In fact, the main block of colour on the both of the squares is identical (I’ve dropped it into Photoshop to test it and they’re bang on the same). I’ve always loved optical illusions, so here are a few new cool ones, along with an explanation of the science behind them.

Currently in the final stages of the editing process, ONEDAY in Woolacombe is the first in an ongoing series of scenic surf & coastal movies from our valued client wavedreamer.

goto11 assisted with second unit camera duties on what turned out to be a long, tiring but intensely rewarding day! We’re particularly proud that we managed to hold focus on the Chinese lantern at the end of the clip, until it faded from view & we nodded off to sleep…

ONEDAY in Woolacombe will be released later this year on DVD and will be available to purchase from the wavedreamer website.

Paul Kenton time lapse movie

One of our top clients here at goto11, Paul Kenton, has recently been asked to submit a painted elephant for the Elephant Parade London 2010. 250 leading UK artists and celebrities have been given blank elephant sculptures to decorate as they see fit. Paul was honored to be be a part of this fantastic endeavor and painted his own elephant in the style of his dripped mixed-media cityscapes, choosing to reflect the city in which the elephants will be displayed by depicting iconic London architecture and icons.

As part of our ongoing development of Paul’s website, goto11 created the following time lapse video of Paul painting his elephant. goto11 shot this film over one week in Paul’s studio. Many thanks to Richard at wavedreamer, who kindly loaned us a fantastic Sony EX1 HD camera to create the time lapse.

Unfortunately, time restraints on the editing process meant that we have only edited a standard definition version for now, but we will be uploading the full HD version soon.

BP Flash animations

Last winter saw us working with illustrator, painter, animator & our great friend, Steve Pleydell-Pearce, putting together these animations as part of a management guide for BP.

We were collaborating on the project with Kind Design, which was developed originally as a management trainee printed booklet. When the call came for an animated version, together with Steve we conceived and storyboarded the following animated versions. These versions formed part of a long and lengthy animated presentation, so we’ll spare you the whole show & will just show you our favourite bits!

We had a blast in the 4 weeks we worked on this, as we relocated to Steve’s log cabin overlooking main beach, Woolacombe & immersed ourselves in flapping bee wings & bristling bear fur for a month. It was a highly educational time in which we helped educate Steve on the benefits of a 12 hour working day, whilst he extolled the virtues of regular & lengthy ukulele jam sessions. The collaboration saw Steve bring his many years of traditional hand-drawn animation experience, whilst we helped translate these vital techniques into a contemporary Flash environment. We’re indebted to Steve for all the animation experience he shared with us, as well us informing us of so many ways to use spam & red pesto in cooking your lunch.

It’s just a pity we couldn’t get these guides out to BP Management before the Gulf of Mexico snafu; perhaps it may have prevented the whole thing?…

xWorks website development

This was a fun but challenging site, built on the WordPress framework using designs supplied by Phil Bridges, Design & Marketing Director for xWorks. As an accomplished print designer, Phil had a very clear and concise idea of how he wanted to the site to look & function, so it was mostly a case of working from supplied Illustrator files with Phil to help realise his vision within the browser environment.

The site uses jQuery to handle all carousels, page sliding & reveals, as well as the modal window popups. The site is also one of the first we have developed to extensively use the ‘Flutter’ plugin for WordPress, which allows us to modify the WordPress backend to customise it to the customers exact content requirements, rather than requiring too much knowledge of the WordPress admin from the client.
