Just stumbled across this guy via WeTransfer of all places. His name is Mark Mawson and his work with the interaction of paint, water & lighting is thrilling. It’s what it must be like living inside a giant lava lamp…

“Mark Mawson is a photographer from the UK. He has been living in Sydney and Australia for a number of years but is now based in London. He got his first camera at the age of 8, from then on his path in life was set. He initially trained as a photojournalist and worked for many of the major national papers in London. Mark’s personal work entitled ‘Aqueous’ explores as yet undiscovered alien & underwater worlds using various forms of paint, water & photography. He has been called ‘an aqua artist’. He is represented in many galleries around the world and in many private collections.”

As part of our ongoing development of Paul’s website, goto11 created the following time lapse video of Paul painting his elephant. goto11 shot this film over one week in Paul’s studio. Many thanks to Richard at wavedreamer, who kindly loaned us a fantastic Sony EX1 HD camera to create the time lapse.

Unfortunately, time restraints on the editing process meant that we have only edited a standard definition version for now, but we will be uploading the full HD version soon.

If anyone was wondering what to get us for Christmas, now you know….

We were collaborating on the project with Kind Design, which was developed originally as a management trainee printed booklet. When the call came for an animated version, together with Steve we conceived and storyboarded the following animated versions. These versions formed part of a long and lengthy animated presentation,  so we’ll spare you the whole show & will just show you our favourite bits!

We had a blast in the 4 weeks we worked on this, as we relocated to Steve’s log cabin overlooking main beach, Woolacombe & immersed ourselves in flapping bee wings & bristling bear fur for a month. It was a highly educational time in which we helped educate Steve on the benefits of a 12 hour working day, whilst he extolled the virtues of regular & lengthy ukulele jam sessions. The collaboration saw Steve bring his many years of traditional hand-drawn animation experience, whilst we helped translate these vital techniques into a contemporary Flash environment. We’re indebted to Steve for all the animation experience he shared with us, as well us informing us of so many ways to use spam & red pesto in cooking your lunch.

It’s just a pity we couldn’t get these guides out to BP Management before the Gulf of Mexico snafu; perhaps it may have prevented the whole thing?…
