Josie Maran Beautiful Nudes Shadow Collection

Josie Maran's Argan Beautiful Eyes shadows are new to me. I know they've been around, but I never got my hands on any of them. First of all, you may wonder what is actually in these shadows, especially after learning what isn't in them. They are toxin-, paraben-, cruelty- and fragrance-free. They are made of organic materials and the packaging is recyclable. What is actually in them? Argan Oil and flower and fruit extracts to start with. This allows for a really smooth product that is soft and goes on slightly differently than other powdered shadows.

I tried the Beautiful Nudes collection, which is Josie's take on the nude palette trend that has been showing up everywhere lately. This collection includes four large, gem-shaped shadows and a smaller band of a darker shadow that makes for a great liner.

These powder shadows are softer than a traditional pressed shadow. I don't know how else to describe it, other than that they are softer, as if they are more finely milled than your average pressed shadow. Perhaps it's the unique shape, the argan oil or they way they are made. Either way, softer shadows seem to mean a glossier texture on the lids, which I love. To me, these shadows give more of an expertly airbrushed look than a traditional shadow might give. I don't mean in the harsh, theatrical way, like you are a going to a Gaga concert after work. I mean in the romantic way way, like moonlight is dancing on your eyes in a soft, pretty way. Yeah. Like that. Not like Gaga.

(Liner, corner crease color, crease color, lid color, highlighter/base color)

Now that we've established that, let's take a look at what the nudes actually look like. While I prefer pretty colors, I've actually reached for this palette for the last three days. Which is saying something serious.

I have read elsewhere that the shadows are "crumbly" and are difficult to apply evenly. While they are on the soft side, I haven't experienced any crumbling. I did find that these apply best over a primer (you are using one of those, right?). I like to apply the lighter shades with a fluffy domed brush and the darker colors with a slightly stiffer fluffy brush. Then I go back with my fluffy domed brush and do a light wash of the lightest color over the whole eye to blend it out, and add a bit of additional glisten to the eye. I've had no creasing issues and they don't fade on me.

Overall, I love how they look and wear. I love the satin-y, glistening texture. I am definitely considering picking up a few more, as the palettes are available in collections of Purple, Smoke and Blues. This collection would be great for someone who works in a conservative environment, but wants to have fun with their shadow. You know, like an attorney in the peachy state of Georgia.* Thoughts?

* I am not insinuating that all attorneys in the south are conservative. I've seen movies where they are not (or they work for the Devil himself!). However, a friend of mine is a conservative southern attorney and this is perfect for her. Embracing the Messy Hair Trend: DIY Updos

If I start one more post with, "Now that my hair is longer," I might force myself to eat my own eyeballs on principle. But in all honesty, now that it is longer, it's like living with a stranger on my head, one I am still getting to know. I marvel at the fact that my hair, once shorter than if it had been shaved with a #2 (stylishly shaved, though), is now long enough to be worn UP. And since my own styling chops aren't up to snuff yet, there is no better time than to explore the trend made just for ladies like me, the messy hair updo.

And because it's supposed to look like you did it, you can't lose. There are a million tutorials online that show you how to do specific styles and I'll link to a few of them. In the meantime, let's take a quick look at some of my favorite styles that couldn't be easier. And I've given them ridiculous names because I can.

The "Harley Quinn, Medicine Woman"

Section your hair into two low pigtails. The piggies should be behind your shoulders, like a respectable adult, not on top of your ears. Now combine your piggies into a ponytail, putting the elastic slightly low on the pony. Make sure it's a little loose as well. Now pull the pony through the gap in the middle, making a pretty twist. Tuck the ends wherever you feel like it and secure the whole mess with a pretty clip or barrette. Or some of those clips that hide in your hair and hold everything up. Want fancier? Add a headband or a fascinator and you will be ready to walk a red carpet. At the very least, you're ready to leave the house in style.

The Gibson A Go-Go

While this isn't really an updo, it almost starts that way so stick with me. I just heard about the Hair Band No Heat Curls the other day on the interwebs. Always up for a DIY project, I'm pleased to announce that this worked like a charm. Granted, my hair doesn't like to bend in the back, so I had to touch that up with a Sultra Bombshell. But I also don't think I did a great job rolling it in the back. It does take a little bit of practice. I got beautiful waves and they stayed in all day, which was shocking to me, as my hair has been Thermafused. I wet my hair slightly--really I misted my hair--with UNITE's 7 Seconds Leave-In Conditioner and rolled it. The results were shiny waves in the front and hair that needed to be touched up in the back. It took me ten minutes to unroll the hair, use the Bombshell, add a headband and walk out the door. And my waves lasted all day!

The Sock Bun

After watching a video online, I fell in love with the idea. I can't do a sock bun but maybe you can, so I'll share the details. Stylist pal Natalie Lamb tried it and got great results. However, if you don't want a huge bun, try a dress sock instead of a tube sock. Here is the genius video that shows you how to do it, courtesy of Beauty Woo Me (I didn't name this one, though).

The Best Cream Blushes for Fair Maidens

I adore a cream blush. I love to build blush and sculpt cheeks and wear multiple colors at once. But every now and then, a few colors come across my vanity that give my very fair skin editorial-looking cheeks without really even trying.

What's an "editorial cheek"? You know. Those poses in the glossies where someone is on a farm, straddling a fence with sheep in the background? Or where they are wandering around, lost, in their childhood neighborhood? Where the models look pensive, or just plain angry? If you've ever spent much time poring over these photos, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The blush is barely there, understated and sculpted.

Since I have such fair skin, picking a blush that really pops is easy. Picking a blush that slightly flushes my cheeks and blends seamlessly is hard. Having that color last most of the day is almost impossible.

My favorites right now are the new Magic Smooth Souffle Blush by L'OREAL in Angelic. This faint kiss of peach makes your cheeks look like they've been shaded with a delicate flower petal (assuming you are as fair as I am). This color actually lasts for an entire day, which was quite shocking as as it's so delicate.

Another favorite is By Terry's Apple Cider Cream Blush. This slightly rosier, dustier neutral shade adds a color similar to when you gently bite your lip. It's not a full pink, just a slight flush. But the texture and the sheen make it look amazing. It's a powder-cream hybrid that leaves you with a satiny glow. Curve this color up around your eyes and back towards your hair line and you'll be impressed with how it accentuates your eyes.

I would be remiss not to mention Josie Maran's Sunset Argan Cream blush. This color is that gorgeous, very light color you see at that perfect moment during a sunset.

It gives the cheeks a dewy glow that lasts throughout the day, while Josie's Argan Oil keeps your skin looking fresh and rested.

Why stop with just a cream blush? Add a little depth to your cheek hallow or a bit of sunlight to your face with Sue Devitt's Bronzing Pressed Powder. Apply this with a fan brush for a hint of color that isn't too dark for us fair maidens.

Garnier B.B. Cream is a Great Option for the Fair

I love that we are finally catching up with the rest of the world on the whole B.B. Cream issue. Not sure what a B.B. Cream is? Basically, B.B. stands for Blemish Balm or Beauty Balm and it was created to give patients with sensitive skin (or post laser-treated skin) a lightweight coverage that also included potent skincare. Most come in a very limited skin tone range, focusing on the lighter skin tones, instead of darker ones. These balms also usually include skin-lightening ingredients, free radical protection and an SPF. The original B.B. Creams were very pigmented and provided enough coverage to conceal things like scars, blemishes and sun damage.

In the U.S., several of these B.B. Creams have launched over the past year. I've tried the ones from Dr. Jart, Boscia, Smashbox, and Too Faced. Most B.B. Creams will set you back around $25-$50, so they aren't always the cheapest new product to try. In a move that surprised a lot of us, Garnier recently threw their little green hat into the B.B. Cream ring with the launch of their Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream.

(Light/Medium)

It's only available in two shades; Light/Medium and Medium/Deep. So as usual, there isn't a huge range of people outside of pale to slightly-not-so-pale that this will work for. But, if you do fall into that category (most B.B. Creams are very limited, shade-wise), this is worth the $13. I found it to be hydrating without feeling greasy. It also provides a nice amount of coverage without feeling heavy. It even contains Vitamin C to help brighten the skin, and an SPF of 15 to prevent further sun damage. I don't know that Vitamin C on its own is a miracle, but I didn't name the product. Of course, the constant use of words like "guru" and "miracle" is seriously grating as of late. That aside, it gives a radiant, pretty finish to the skin.

I really like the coverage, look and feel of this B.B. Cream. And you can't beat the price. If the color range works for you and you are curious about B.B. Creams, definitely give it a try!

Question of the Week: – If you were advising a makeup newbie, which three items would you suggest that they get to start with? (not counting base items)

If I had to pick three? I'd say impossible! If you said you would throw kittens into the sun if I didn't do it, then I suppose I would pick a good mascara (none of this Pink and Green business, please), a great cream blush and Buxom's Sugar Lip Polish. If you could go back the next day and get three more, I would say a good cream eyeliner (I love Dalton's), Benefit's Watt's Up Highlighter and any form you choose of the Stila Kitten eyeshadow.

UNITE Lazer Straight Relaxing Fluid

UNITE gives good hair. They just do. They know which textures and polymers that make the magic happen. When I tried their Boing! Curl Enhancing Cream last year, it made my straight hair curly. Now that I want really straight hair, why would I even question if Lazer Straight Relaxing Fluid would do anything other than make my hair poker straight?

Here's the deal. The Relaxing Fluid is similar in texture to a light lotion. You apply it evenly throughout your wet hair and then dry with a round or paddle brush. The end result is a lovely, straight, humidity-resistant finish that holds its shape. And I'm not sure why, but I swear my hair feels cleaner on the second day when I use this. My hair feels slightly thicker, almost like I used a light hold styling cream.

The Unsung Hereos Of Award Show Nights Are...

With red carpet season in full swing, everyone will be talking about how amazing (or not) everyone looked in their outfits. And while the hair, the makeup, the clothes and the jewelry will be the focus, the other real heroes of the evening will never even be mentioned.

I'm not talking about the stylists or the companies who actually pay the celebs to wear their clothes and products (yup. They get paid for that). I'm talking about the little miracles that make it all come together. Products like these:

Hollywood Fashion Tape is a must have for any time you wear a dress, or anything with a plunging neckline. Don't think you have to be J-Lo back in the day to need this. Anne Houseman and I used and abused this at the Independent Spirit awards, and our dresses had middles, like real people.

Accessory Dots are genius. Wearing a scarf and want it to sit perfectly all day? Want your cuffs or collar to stay in place? Just want to attach a bit of bling to your skin? This is the sauce. It's all you'll need to look fabulous, no matter how you move or how the wind blows.

When I don't have time to think about what to wear, my uniform consists of skinny jeans, tall boots and a top that covers at least half of my bum. My biggest issue is that my jeans don't behave and stay smooth, inside my boots. With these Boot Straps, that you affix to your jeans, my problem is solved.

Finally, these are amazing. Especially if you are between sizes, have hard-to-fit hips or just don't have time for the tailor. These little Hip Hugger Clips act like an unseen belt in the back, making sure no one gets a peek and your silhouette is smooth.

The Lip Slip by Sara Happ One Luxe Gloss Is My Favorite New Lip Product.

I struggle with chapped lips constantly. Plus, when I get nervous or fidgety, I sometimes bite my lower lip a bit, which isn't helping anything. Most lip balms disappear on me within moments. Other ones are so oily they make the flakes fall off of my lips in a weird way that makes my lips more chapped/dry/sore than before I had used anything. And don't get me started on Chapstick. I'm certain that Chapstick only works as long as you never stop using it.

I couldn't resist trying the Lip Slip by Sara Happ One Luxe Gloss. It's such a beautiful colorless gloss. How can that be? You look at it and tell me it isn't beautiful. Teeny, tiny bits of micro shimmer add a bit of a twist on this clear lip treatment. It reflects the light in a magical way that always looks like your lips are always lit by candlelight. It's made of magic, I tell you!

But that isn't why I like it. I like it because it is the best lip treatment I have tried in eons. It is infused with Sweet Almond, Jojoba and Macadamia nut oils. And it has an amazing way of hugging your lips and not letting go. According to their website, the polymers took two years to get just right, and I totally believe it.

This glossy treatment wears for more than an hour. And even after the gloss fades, the smooth, soft feel of perfectly nourished lips remains. Even better, wear it to bed and wake up with amazing lips you won't believe belong to you.

This isn't the cheapest lip treatment at $18, but it is the best. Priorities, people. Pick it up in Baltimore at La Papillon or check out their website to find a location near you.

Rimmel Launches Their Richest Pigments Yet!

Rimmel's 2012 Spring Collection contains pigments you haven't seen before. Try lipsticks with Black Diamond Pigment Complex. Discover blushes that self-adjust, thanks to blue sapphire pigments. Explore eyeshadows with crazy color that work wet or dry.

I was able to check out one of the new signature lippies, created by Kate Moss for Rimmel. These long lasting shades contain vitamins C and E, and their antioxidants and moisturizers keep lips perfectly hydrated and smooth. The creamy colors are based on Kate's personal favorite shades.

Here is what 08 -- a dusty rose -- looks like. I got about three hours out of one application. This shade goes slightly more mauve on me than I expected, but I kind of really like it. It's definitely creamy and not drying.

After the creamy appearance wears off, I was left with a bit of a stain that faded nicely. This lipstick is also available in four other colors:

01 – a deep brick red
04 – a royal purple
12 – a candy coral
14 – a blushed nude

Rimmel is also launching some new Glam'EYES HD Eyeshadows. These shadows work equally well wet or dry, and contain serious pigment that doesn't stop. I was able to check out the number 002 and 003 palettes.

These shadows are packed with color and wear nicely, especially with a primer. I love that they have such high sheen, without the glitter. Add a little mixing medium, like water or lubricating eye drops, and these shadows take the sheen and wear to new heights.

My biggest complaint? The cute Union Jack pattern makes it hard to get enough color on the brush, especially if you are trying to use anything other than a tiny, dense brush.

Liquid Palisade Peel-Off Nail Polish Barrier Works, But Is Wonky.

I am terrible at painting my nails. I always have been. I practice a lot and I never get better. Now that my nails are really short again (I'm trying to practice the mandolin faithfully), it's harder than ever to paint my nails my beloved dark colors.

I saw this Liquid Palisade Peel-Off Nail Polish Barrier on the interwebs a few weeks ago and was totally intrigued. Here is how it works. You apply it to your cuticles and anywhere you don't want the polish to go. You then paint your nails. Once your nails are dry, you peel off the polish barrier and you have perfect nails. According to the instructions, you can use this to also create all kinds of great designs on your nails. Think of it as painters tape, but for your nails.

Want clean moons? Perfect tips? Crazy stripes or art? Apply the Palisade where you don't want polish to go and it won't.

In theory, at least. Here is what it's really like. Imagine applying liquefied silly string to your nails. It's sticky, difficult and unwieldy. You apply it with a tiny brush that constantly needs to be cleaned. My brush went wonky out of the gate and I could never get it to be a normal shape again, no matter how much I cleaned, trimmed or begged. But the product worked really well when I used it as a barrier for my cuticles. The cool thing with this stuff (besides the fact it's really satisfying to peel off when you are finished), is that you can use a cuticle pusher to move this stuff around after it's applied. So if you make a mistake, it's not the end of the world.

I had great success when I just used it as a cuticle barrier. I did not have luck trying to do a matte black nail with shiny tips. It seemed like an easy experiment. I painted my nails black. I then added a barrier across my nails at the tips, where I wanted it to remain like patent leather. Then I painted the entire nail with a Matte Essie topcoat. The Liquid Palisade Peel Off Nail Barrier came off easily enough, but it left little white edges that did not make for a great look. I blame my application on the poor brush. Perhaps if I used a better brush, I would have gotten better results.

All in all, this stuff works, but you have to have patience. And you are going to need a better brush. It's kind of a lot of work for $22. But it does work as a cuticle barrier. And if you love your Liquid Leather and Russian Navy they way I do, you'll take all of the help you can get.

Question of the Week: – What is your most beloved makeup item in your collection, and if someone offered you $100 for it would you sell it to them?

Answer: Hmmm... I have two items. My first is my Sultra Hair Dryer. It cuts drying time down dramatically. My second favorite item is the space I use to get ready. I recently got a dreamy "makeup nook re-design", courtesy of a friend, who volunteered her husband. My space went from being a cramped cockpit to being somewhere that is a joy to be. I'll post pictures when it's finished, but I love it so much I actually did my nails in my nook. Something I usually only do when watching television. Both of these are worth their weight in gold to me!

Winter skin got you down? My skin is currently driving me bonkers. It's breaking out, it's dry, it's flaky, it's oily. It's basically being a hot mess, no doubt thanks to the constantly changing weather.

Mally Roncal is the Queen of gorgois makeup that lasts and lasts. It's no surprise that she developed the perfect red lip that won't dry out your pucker, fade, migrate or look anything but fresh. The Perfect Red Lip for Everyone Three Piece Kit makes it easy for even the shyest mama to feel comfortable rockin' a red lip.

This kit comes with three signature Mally Beauty pieces. A lip primer, to lock your color in place and prevent feathering and fading, a lip liner to keep it razor sharp and the long wearing, lush lipstick. This is available in two colors, Warm Red and Neutral Red. The Warm Red is a bright, pulp fiction kind of red. It's great for a really modern twist on the classic pin-up color. I wore the Warm Red to work for a few days to check out how well this worked. Never mind the multitude of compliments I got on the bright shade, the wear was incredible! I carefully applied the primer, liner and lippie at 8:30 am. I ate breakfast an hour later, lunch at 1 and didn't touch up my lips until 3pm. And at 3pm, I didn't apply more color. I added a tiny bit of hydrating lip balm, as it was a very cold and windy day. The color still looked fresh, bright and hadn't migrated one bit. It even made my teeth look whiter. Love it!

Too Faced Spring 2012 Collections Are Naturally Beautiful!

Spring 2012 at Too Faced is all about natural, beautiful peachy looks. From smoldering yet neutral eyes to a peaches and cream complexion to a girl-next-door pout, Too Faced is serving up one of my favorite collections of the spring!

Let's check out the three kits I couldn't resist when I saw them in person. First up is the Natural Face Natural Radiance Palette. This collection caught my eye because of the multiple textures included. It comes with a universal luminizer, brightener and concealer in neutral shades, cream and powder cheek options along with a golden-bronze veil for an overall glow. The concealer and brightener work for me and my skin tone, but if you are much more tan than I am, the concealer (and possibly brightener) may not be for you.

The cream blush is a really pretty neutral peach shade that is truly a perfect peach. This long wearing cream shade is perfect for layering with powder and building a sculpted cheek. The luminizer is soft and pretty and the bronzer is not too dark. Plus it comes with the signature Too Faced cards, tucked away under the flap, to show you how to work what you've got.

Next up is the latest shadow palette, the Natural at Night Palette. Similar to other Too Faced Palettes, this one contains nine coordinating shadows that give you Night, Classic and Fashion looks. These shimmering shades are perfect for a slightly shimmering, smoky work eye or a pretty, but not overdone eye for a night out. While these colors will work for anyone, those with light eyes will benefit the most from these shades. Almost all of these shades contain shimmer with a little glitter (you are going to want to use Shadow Insurance with these) with the exception of Spotlight, a slightly yellowish-bone shade and Cocoa Star, a deep brown.

Of course, you can mix and match the shades to create your own look, or use their how-to cards.

Finally, I couldn't resist the Natural Kiss Neutral Lip Collection. I'm not always the first one to jump on lip palettes, as I hate applying the color with a brush.

But this one was so up-my-alley-peach I had to grab it. The colors wear nicely and my favorite is the Nude Cream.

It's no secret I love hair extensions. My hair closet has been well documented. When I first met Loxy, he never who was going to show up for our dates; it could be someone rocking a fall ala Britney Spears or a cute geek with side knots. The Glasses You Voted On Have Arrived From GlassesUSA.com!

Back in December, I asked for your help in selecting a pair of glasses, to order via the interwebs from GlassesUSA.com, to see if it could be done successfully. This is a daunting task for many reasons.

1. What do the glasses look like?
2. Will they fit?
3. Will the lenses stink?
4. What if there is an issue?

Thank you for voting!! On December 13th, a winning pair of prescription glasses was selected, only to find out that too many of you also ordered the same pair and they were sold out! So I chose the runner-up pair, which I also liked quite a bit.

You may remember that my original goal was to get a new pair of eyeglasses, all said, for $125. The frames and basic lenses were $88. With the promoted site code for free shipping, I could have scored these glasses on their own for $88, plus applicable tax! However, leave it to me to have optic neuritis, so I upgraded the lenses to a lighter material and chose the anti-glare, anti-scratch, UV-protected lens to keep my eyes as comfy as possible. I bought these glasses with a gift card from the company (for $100), but because of the gift card, I couldn't use any additional coupons. So my total came in at $135.97, about $11 over my goal. However, if I could have applied a coupon for free shipping, I would have saved about $9, which would make me come in very, very close to my goal. At the end of the day, I'll call it a win and give the technicality that caused the price fail a pass.

I love how my new glasses look. They actually look really similar to how they looked on my face when I tried them on virtually. Who knew it would be that easy? I love the look and the lenses seem to be performing as well as any of my other glasses. The prescription is perfect and I couldn't be happier with how they look and fit!

Which brings me to my fourth online glasses purchasing concern. What if there is an issue? I suppose because I am me (or just a really diligent reviewer), I did have a small problem with the glasses. A day or two after they arrived, I noticed a tiny lens defect was noticeable in the upper corner of my right eye. I could have lived with it, but why should I? So I contacted the company and they quickly got back to me with a solution. They offered to send me new glasses. Perfect! Since this all took place immediately after the Christmas holiday, it took a few weeks to get the glasses in my hand, but after about two and a half weeks they arrived, in perfect condition!

So here is what I learned. For the price of two pairs of jeans or one nice purse, you can get a face changing pair of stylish glasses without leaving the comfort of your computer. If you have problems reading your prescription (which I was worried about), they will do it for you. If there is an error, they will fix it. Beauty Shorts: Redheads, Winter Skin & Brigitte Bardot in a Brush

I was reading the beauty book, About Face, by Scott Barnes and couldn't help noticing one specific comment he kept suggesting for us gingers. Instead of brown or red brow powder, add a mustard color to make your brows look more natural. I know, MUSTARD? But, to his point, yellow and brown make red. And since you are mixing the yellow with your naturally brown brows, you'll get a red that suits your skin and hair. Since my brows are dishwater-bleck, I did my brows as usual, with my brownish red Trish McEvoy brow powder and then added a bit of mustard color shadow from MAC (I have no clue what it is. It's in a Z palette from a schmillionty years ago) and it looks fantastic. Who knew? Check out more tips from Scott Barnes in his book, About Face.

My skin has been looking a little on the blah side lately, and I've been reaching in my arsenal for products that can pull skin out of a funk. I'm having a hard time, as I've started breaking out a little bit as well. But breakouts aside, my skin is just lackluster. One product I raved about last year came out of the closet to kick the blahs out of face. By Nieves "C Perfect Skin" somehow does a fantastic job of giving my skin a radiance when nothing else does. It's not secret I'm Thermafused, which means my hair is now pretty straight. This means, I usually reach for some kind of volumizer in the morning to help give my hair a little boost. While I don't understand how a brush can make such a difference, the John Frieda Full Volume Round Porcupine Brush is one hard working volumizer. The brush has a combination of nylon and boar bristles that distribute your scalp's natural oils, while giving your hair major oomph. There are also little bands of silicone embedded in the brush for extra shine, and tourmaline crystals to keep away the frizz. This brush almost makes my hair too big. Without any extra volumizing products. Pinky swear. I don't get it, but my hair is a different animal when I use this brush. It's like a little, magical Brigitte Bardot in a brush.
