Hip Cat Circus Term 3: 8-12 years - Monday, 15 July 2013 - Monday, 16 September 2013

The Hip Cat Circus is a program of circus arts, which teaches circus skills in a positive learning environment led by professional trainers.

Hip Cat Circus aims to inspire and facilitate creativity through performance and community project opportunities. Develop leaders through our mentorship program. Provide artist development activities through offering regular teaching opportunities. And educate students in circus arts using highly experienced national and international trainers.

Circus provides a sense of ownership within a social network, whilst increasing fundamental life skills such as coordination, coping strategies, respect, team work, creativity, trust, mental and physical health. Circus skills that will be learnt include aerials, tumbling, acrobalance, manipulation, clowning, trampoline, and more.

Each September includes an outstanding performance crafted and produced by the Hip Cat Circus members. Term 2 and 4 gives parents and friends the opportunity to see what their child has learnt in a Show Off of skills, plus it’s a good way to celebrate the end of another term! Make sure you come along to the Open Day during January to watch the demonstrations and participate in workshops.

"My son, Rocco, loves to tell people he's joined "The Circus". I want to share with you what we've noticed as parents since being in the 8-12yo Junior Hip Cat Circus. Kids can have fun, feel safe, develop friendships and lift in stamina, strength, and as a person. What's been so valuable to us is that Rocco's shyness has shifted and we feel in no small part this is due to the circus. The relationships developed between leaders and students is shrouded in trust, they instill confidence, treat the children as equals, recognise their qualities and encourage them to explore their strengths. Academia accelarates, personal relationships grow, and a new world begins to develop. Thankyou to the Hip Cat Circus leaders and trainers.
Hang out with us at the circus to learn backflips, aerials, trampoline, juggling, and more PLUS join us for our annual performance in October, jump on board for excursions to the flying trapeze, and be a part of our January Open Day.

"Hip Cats is a fun way to try new things, get fit and meet new people. Over the past year I have been able to improve circus skills like hula hooping and aerial acts and I've been challenged to learn new activities like tumbling, clowning and acrobalance. Acrobalance has been especially rewarding for me because it needs an amazing amount of communication and trust. I was terrified at first, and now I love it. Being in the show last year was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. We created it as a team, worked together with virtually no adult help and our performances were a fabulous reward for all our hard work. Hip Cats has helped me make new friends, boost my confidence and allowed me to continue and improve my favourite activity....circus. I hope one day to help teach others in the same way".
Untitled: Giles Ryder - Monday, 12 August 2013 - Saturday, 31 August 2013

Giles Ryder presents a newly commissioned work at Cube 37 in the form of a site-specific installation. This installation combines sculpture, painting and the spatiality of Cube 37’s architecture. Ryder shall explore readymade lighting, metallic surfaces and mirrored materials, to further his practice of atmospheric installations with various high finish surfaces situated within architectural spaces, in which the inside and outside of an exhibition space and the installed works are in constant reflective conversation, a conversation between the gallery art world space and industrial components which we utilize, daily, in our everyday lives.

This work was curated by Mark Theman as par tof the White Street Project spanning the light boxes of the White Street Mall and the Glass Cube at Cube 37 Gallery, FAC.

48: Sabine Amos - Thursday, 15 August 2013 - Saturday, 28 September 2013

Sabine presents a stunning series of Mandala’s reflecting virtues and values expressed with vibrant colour and intricate detail. Sabine was the winner of the Frankston Arts Centre Open Exhibition Award in 2012 and was also equal winner of the People’s Choice Award.

“Painting ushers me into a paradoxical state of stillness and inspiration. I love witnessing the revelation of a creative piece. This mysterious and inspired space is what continues to lure me back. A deep love for colour and how it can transform a mood intrigues me and this is what I aspire to communicate with my work. These current works are an exploration of mandalas and their transformative power. There are 48 paintings in this series and each mandala depicts a virtue and have each been born out of an inspired place. The mandala that means the most to me is “Birth” the last one painted in the series when I was expecting my firstborn.” Sabine Amos.
Neil Diamond's Hot August Night - Thursday, 22 August 2013

A RECREATION OF ONE OF THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

"....the day I see a better Diamond, will be the day the man himself appears on stage... “
Adrian Revere...The Mercury

Celebrating the Anniversary of the legendary “Hot August Night”, PETER BYRNE brings Neil Diamond to you together with a 30 piece symphony Orchestra.

It’s almost 40 years since Neil Diamond stepped on stage at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles with a symphony orchestra and recorded what is still known today as one of the greatest live albums of all time.

Now the album is recreated in its original format by Peter Byrne and the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra. Featuring all those classic songs like Crunchy Granola Suite, Cherry Cherry, Sweet Caroline, I am I said and list goes on.

Experience the same live concert experience as delivered by Neil Diamond through the superb talents of Peter Byrne .

His capacity to recreate Neil Diamond to a standard that Neil himself has endorsed him is high praise to Peter.

Each year Peter has thrilled audiences around Australia playing this spectacular tribute to Hot August Night . Don’t miss Peter Byrne live in concert with his orchestra performing every song just as Diamond recorded it.

The timeless classic, 'Wizard of Oz' by Frank L Baum is the base of this dazzling musical. A cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. When Dorothy's house squashes the Wicked Witch of the East, she is ecstatically thanked by the liberated Munchkins and given permission to wear the witch's powerful silver slippers. From there, Baum's lovable characters, the rubber-legged Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West, who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister. This bright musical is charged with a bundle of wonderful songs and thrill after thrill... like the escape from the Fighting Trees and encountering the enchanted poppies. Eventually, Glinda the Good Witch helps Dorothy defeat the evil witch and her winged monkeys. The great and powerful wizard grants Dorothy's friends their wishes and of course, helps Dorothy return to Kansas.

Sarah McKenzie Quartet - Friday, 30 August 2013

ARIA Award Winner Sarah McKenzie

Sarah's rise through the ranks of the Australian music scene has been spectacular, aided by frequent appearances at venues like Bennett’s Lane, The Paris Cat, and at major festivals. Her musical pedigree is impeccable, having been mentored by legends like Graeme Lyall, Jamie Oehlers, and James Morrison

Following on from a whirlwind tour to celebrate her ARIA for ’BEST JAZZ ALBUM’ in 2012, Sarah headed for Berklee University and the challenge of studying with the finest teachers of Jazz in the United States. Boston’s proximity to New York has led to Sarah fulfilling a lifetime dream – to record her next album in New York with the Big Apples’ finest musicians.

Berklee’s summer break sees Sarah at home for a limited number of concerts before completing this extra-ordinary year with a return to Umbria Jazz Festival, Italy. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy this rising star of the Australian Jazz scene before the rest of the world claims her.

Kinship - Wednesday, 4 September 2013

Rekindling the Indigenous culture of Australia, internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre as created an original and breathtaking theatrical experience – Kinship by awardwinning choreographer Stephen Page.

Kinship opens with traditional Aboriginal dance Fire – the meaning of Bangarra is ‘to make fire’ in Wiradjuri language. This sets the scene for Brolga and ID, a fusion of traditional and contemporary music and dance.

In Fire and Brolga Stephen Page explores the relationship between indigenous people, creatures and the land, reflecting the intrinsic link between animals and humans and the way Aboriginal song and dance mimics nature and animals as part of its story-telling.

ID investigates what it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions of identity. Based on personal observations of people tracing their bloodlines and re-connecting with traditional culture, ID provokes perceptions in contemporary society.

Bangarra creates a truly Australian theatrical experience that connects the spirit of traditional culture with our contemporary lives, creating inspiring dance theatre productions of integrity and excellence that resonate with people throughout Australia and the world.

"highly theatrical... striking, layered, surprising... absolutely transporting.” Elissa Blake, Sun Herald, 2011

Hard Rubbish Day - Wednesday, 11 September 2013

Full On Theatre and FAC present HARD RUBBISH DAY

Nothing is a secret on Hard Rubbish Day

Nothing’s a secret in Fortitude Street, not on Hard Rubbish Day anyway. Two young brothers rifle through the neighbourhood’s debris of secrets and stories left out on the street for all to see, and with playful musical precision and magical inventiveness, the brothers turn the junk on the footpath into an entire tapestry of the street’s characters, controversies and current events.

With their innocent naivety, the boys retell the good, bad and ugly of the street. They know everyone’s name, where they live, and what they do. They know about the old man with the dogs in No 17, the girl who won’t eat in No 28, and the dodgy uncle who visits No 18, and now the biggest event of all has happened right on their street and they can’t wait to see what will happen after.... after Hard Rubbish Day, after the teenage party at no. 14 went viral and the house was destroyed, after the rioting, after the police, after the newspapers and TV crews.

A fast-paced, thought-provoking play full of live music, comedy, multiple characters and created through a series of workshops with over 50 secondary students and in partnership with The Royal Children’s Hospital Integrated Mental Health Program, Headspace, Family Life – Shine Program, Centrelink, Young Carers Association,

Mornington Peninsula Youth Services, Mornington Shire, YMCA & the Victoria Police. “Hard Rubbish Day” continues Full-On Theatre’s commitment to presenting powerful, hardedged and educative productions for Secondary Schools.

What audiences have said about the show and the making of it:

A lot of people came up to me and they were like crying and they were like, “that was so good”, “that was an inspiration”. My friend’s whole family, they were all really crying, his mum, dad, grandparents, all crying because it like tugged on the heartstrings a little bit.” – Student

“I’ll never forget the actual play itself because I guess it dwells on some pretty heavy themes” Student

“Words cannot describe the benefit of this project on the young people involved. I believe it is life changing.” The Royal Children’s Hospital Integrated Mental Health Program

"These concepts need to be discussed in schools. Hard Rubbish Day was an engaging play which was in parts very funny, as well as full of pathos, very well acted and opened plenty of doors for discussion. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance." Wellbeing Coordinator - Luther College

“Words cannot describe the benefit of this project on the young people involved. I believe it is life changing.” Family Life SHINE PROJECT
Cosi Fan Tutte - Saturday, 14 September 2013

Subtitled “The School for Lovers”, Cosi fan Tutte is a lighthearted comedy of two sisters whose claims of undying love and fidelity to their partners are revealed to be somewhat negotiable. A cynical old friend of the two girls’ lovers, Don Alfonso, makes a bet that he can turn the girls’ affections swiftly simply by disguising the boys and getting them to seduce each other’s partner. Confusion and high comedy ensue, combined with a somewhat more serious examination of the nature of love and attraction. The brilliant libretto is by Lorenzo da Ponte, a great friend of Casanova, whose influence can be felt throughout the opera.

Cosi fan Tutte is regarded as one of Mozart and da Ponte’s greatest achievements and features arias and ensembles unmatched in their musical and dramatic perfection.

Featuring Roger Howell, Danielle Calder, Roy Best, Victoria Lambourn, Phillip Calcagno and the Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra, the opera will be performed in English.

“A brilliantly put together production.” Laneway Magazine
“Fine work, great fun, much mirth from the audience" The Age

Act One – The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker is famous for Tchaikovsky’s music. The genius of Tchaikovsky created one of the most recognisable and enduring music scores ever written.

Act Two – Bolero

Bolero is a striking and dramatic ballet. Ravel was inspired to create this masterpiece after visiting a large industrial factory. There he noticed the slow regular movement of the assembly lines and the crash of machine and materials. Bolero is regarded as one of the world’s music masterpieces.

Act Three – Highlights from the world’s great ballets including Giselle, Carmen, The Dying Swan and Le Corsaire. Also in Act Three, Gopak and Ne Me Quittes Pas, Can Can Surprise

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company have performed this three-hour ballet extravaganza all around the world, thrilling audiences and impressing critics.

Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis Show - Friday, 11 October 2013

The Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Show is a well-shaped piece of theatre masquerading as a variety show, not just another tribute show.

Martin and Lewis were sex and slap-stick, genius and genie, Romeo and a schmuck Puck. Dean Martini as Dean and Tony Lewis as Jerry brilliantly capture the dynamic energy, wit and irreverent off-the-cuff humor of the combo that was Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

This is a great night of classic gags guaranteed to have you splitting your sides.

It has songs that’ll put a smile on your dial, make your ticker beat quicker and get those

toes-a-tapping!

Songs include:

Pardners, Every Street’s a Boulevard, Everybody Loves Somebody, That's Amore, Sway and many more of your favourite songs, plus some of the greatest Dean and Jerry gags, routines and sketches.

It’s a very funny, over-the-top romp that will leave you wanting more.

Australian Welsh Male Choir - Sunday, 13 October 2013

The Australian Welsh Male Choir was formed in 1973 at the Pines Soccer Club Frankston by a group of expatriates to sing Christmas carols. It has progressed since then into a prestigious choir singing concerts in Australia and around the world. Imbued with the spirit of its Welsh heritage the choir is joining with the Greater Dandenong Band to celebrate 40 years of entertaining in a Gala Concert at the Frankston Arts Centre on the afternoon of October 13th.

In 1983 the choir was invited to join the Association of Welsh Choirs and became the only choir outside Wales to be accorded that honour. The following year in 1984 the choir toured the UK and sang at the Royal Albert Hall with the “1000 Voice Festival of Choirs”. They repeated this tour in 1988, 2000, 2004 and 2012 and are preparing for a further Tour to the UK and Ireland in 2015. Tours have been made to Tasmania to raise money for charities and also to New Zealand. Fund raising has been a major aim of this choir and thousands of dollars have been raised for charities as well as entertaining hundreds of concert goers. Our AWMC CD production has been continuous and the choir recordings stand impressive amongst classical disks. A special 40 song two disk production has been completed for this 40th celebration including many original tape recordings.

The concert will feature the choir singing traditional Welsh songs, inspirational music and songs from the shows with soloist and a prestige duo playing piano duets. The choir will be accompanied by the Greater Dandenong Band who will also be playing band numbers. It will be a wonderful afternoon of harmony and musical variety and memories for all those choristers or relatives who have been part of the choir over the past 40 years. Please join us.

How do you sum up an artist who has captured a country in song and had such a successful career in one of the most cutthroat industries in just one page? It’s an impossible task.

Very few artists have experienced and earned the longevity of such a career as John Williamson. It’s quite rare but when you review his albums and songs you can see why.

After forty-three years in the music industry, touring continuously for that period, John’s career is stronger than ever and he is still writing and recording new songs. But during this time he has shunned celebrity and resisted offers to take his music to the international stage, preferring to stay true to his passion: Australia.

John is not only an artist of unbelievable musical poetry but also a man of integrity. He has always stood firm to his own beliefs and his courage of conviction, regardless of the outcome and without regrets. He is truly proud of his country and stands and sings tall with each note.

John Williamson is, without question, an Australian icon. His voice and sound is as recognisable and important to Australia as the Southern Cross is to the flag. He’s performed at some of Australia’s most historic and nation-stopping events, and to battlers across this vast country. His songs and music are simply for everyone.

This is John Williamson, with A HELL OF A CAREER!

MSO - A Midsummer Night's Dream - Saturday, 26 October 2013

Mendelssohn
A Midsummer Night’s Dream:

Overture and Scherzo
Strauss Oboe Concerto
Mendelssohn Symphony No.4 Italian

Nicholas Carter conductor
Diana Doherty oboe

A luminous orchestral favourite, Mendelssohn’s glorious Italian symphony has been called ‘Blue sky in A major.’ While Mendelssohn created this in his adulthood, he composed his shimmering overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream when he was just 16 – a miracle of musical genius. And don’t miss the sublime Diana Doherty as soloist in Richard Strauss’ autumnal oboe concerto.

Australian Army Band - Friday, 8 November 2013

The Australian Army Band Melbourne (AAB-M), currently commanded by Major Glenn Rogers, has been at the forefront of Military and Ceremonial Band music in Australia since 1940. In that time the band has become an integral part of Melbourne, sharing in every part of the growing city's life.

The primary role of the AAB-M is to provide music for Defence training, ceremonial occasions and Commonwealth, Royal and Vice Regal ceremonial functions. In addition, the AAB-M participates in State ceremonial events, assists Defence Force recruiting and public relations and regularly supports charitable organisations. The band also appears at major sporting events, significant public performances and is also required, on occasion, to be involved in radio and television appearances. In fact, whenever an event of international standing requires some ceremonial splendour, the AAB-M is only too pleased to show why they are considered one of the finest bands of their kind in the world today.

The AAB-M consists of 34 full time professional musicians who primarily operate as a concert band. The band is also capable of breaking down into smaller groups such as the stage band, jazz ensemble, woodwind quintet, and rock band. The band is equally at home on the parade ground or in the concert hall and it is this versatility that sets them apart from other musical ensembles. From Opera to Jazz, Tchaikovsky to Lloyd Webber, their extreme flexibility is displayed every time they perform.

When Dad Married Fury - Wednesday, 13 November 2013

Brothers Ian and Ben are on their way to Sydney to visit their recently widowed father. Three big surprises are in store when they arrive at his 75th birthday celebrations.

The ‘Old Man’ is worth $100 million. He’s gone and married Fury, an American beauty queen half his age.
There is no pre-nup…

With his trademark wit and skillful blending of contemporary culture within the ageless framework of family greed, jealousy, love and expectation, Australia’s leading playwright David Williamson has delivered another gripping play and his most memorable characters to date.

Is there more to the beautiful Fury than meets the eye? Is Alan the father he thinks he is? Do Ben’s loyalties lie with his wife, his dad or himself? Can Ian contain his greed long enough to get a signature on the right will? And who is to blame for the death of Ben’s father-in-law?

One thing is for certain: everything changed when Dad married Fury.

"Australia's premiere playwright DAvid Williamson has coming up with another engrossing, entertaining night at the theatre with his new play." Sydney Arts Guide

Dragon - The Trilogy Concert - Friday, 16 May 2014

DRAGON HONOURS THE THREE AGES OF THE BAND’S EVOLUTION

DRAGON – THE TRILOGY CONCERT TOUR THE YOUNG YEARS – THE GLORY YEARS – THE PHOENIX YEARS

Unlike many bands, there are three distinct ages that define the evolution of iconic rock band Dragon. The eras represent the rites of passage that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. Now, for the first time, Dragon is hitting the road to celebrate these three ages with their special Dragon – The Trilogy Concert tour, which will see them performing in metro and regional centres over a few months in early 2014.

The three key eras in Dragon’s four decade history have been dubbed the Young Years (1973 – 1979), the Glory Years (1982 – 1998) and the Phoenix Years (from 2006 on). The current line-up of the band features Todd Hunter, Mark Williams, Pete Drummond and Bruce Reid.

Founder and bass player Todd Hunter says the band will revisit some obscure older songs that they have an affection for and play the hits from each of the eras. “We’ll also have a mystery song slot where we will play a different song every night,” he says. “We’ll take requests for the slot on our Facebook page. The hits speak for themselves. Our task with those is to play them and let the crowd sing along. It seemed to me that there are three distinct eras in the Dragon saga and the songs from each age are markedly different. The Dragon Trilogy Tour is a way of honouring those eras through the songs and a way of making sense of everything that has happened in the last 40 years.”
