Get to know Bill Strickland

Bill Strickland is found of the Manchester Craftmen's Guild, a vocational center in inner city of Pittsburgh. He grew up in Pittsburgh's poor neighborhood and got himself into university thanks to his college art teacher who introduced him to ceramics and Jazz Music.

Manchester Craftmen's Guild offers vocational training to welfare mothers and ex-steel workers and poor children in ceramics, design arts, digital arts and photography. They also have a culinary program. The school is located in amazing building that was designed and built by Bill Strickland.

Bill says:

My building is located in a tough neighborhood where people have been given up for dead. And my view is that if you want to involve yourself in the life op people that have been given up on you have to look like the solution and not the problem.

We have students who sit together - black kids and white kids. And what we've discovered is you can solve the race problem by creating a world-class environment because people will have a tendency to show world-class behavior if you threat them in that way.

In the building is also a concert hall and recording studio. The Guild has won four Grammys for their recording of Jazz musicians.

I love this course by Professor John Merriman at Yale. All history course should be given like this.

John Merriman lived for more than 30 year in France and seems to speak perfect French. He's truly passionate about this course and teaches in a very involving and fun way. Listen to him makes you want to know more about the history of France or history in general.

This course consists of 24 lectures. I've made and RSS feed for the entire course (the Yale site doesn't offer this) so you can add this course as a podcast.

Enjoy.

The Art of Looking Sideways by Alan Fletcher

I bought The Art of Looking Sideways many years ago by chance. I'm not involved in any way in design or graphic design. Yet I adore this book. It's literally living on our living room table because that where it belongs.

I'm creating this lens to introduce you not only to this wonderful book but also to the person Alan Fletcher. However, you can only appreciate this book by holding it and looking at it.

Don't get me wrong, The Art of Looking Sideways is a book that can be read. Actually it has to be read. What's very special about this book is that every page has been designed to both be read and be looked at.

Is civilization good for us?

Is civilization good for us? is a question that has captured me for some years now. I'm not sure if other people are asking this same question but I could not yet find and literature or even blog about this question.

In this lens I explore this question, the different possible interpretation of this questions and reasons why this questions cannot be answered. So there you already have the answer: there is not answer. The question in undecidable.
