Pricing: Fine Art and Photographic Paper Prints

We're very happy to be working with some excellent photographers and artists for their exhibition, gallery and portfolio prints. What's probably not as evident as it should be from our web site is that we provide more options than gallery-wrapped canvas prints; though these are indeed our standard fare.

We are delighted to additionally offer unstretched canvas prints, and prints on fine art, photographic, and plain coated papers. Whether the output needs to suit your needs in photographic prints; art reproduction, digital art, illustration and so on; we're sure that one of these alternatives is bound to be ideal. There are a plethora of other media types available, but the ones we stock are the ones most commonly requested.

As the website doesn't make a clear mention of it, the standard canvas (unstretched) and media costs (Excl. GST), per square foot required, are as follows:

Canvas - spraycoated* = $29 psf
Canvas - unsprayed = $25 psf
Fine Art paper (textured or smooth) = $25 psf
Archival Photographic papers (satin or glossy) = $19 psf
Satin "Poster" photographic paper = $15 psf
Plain coated paper = $12 psf.

* Spraycoating also available for fine art papers at $5 psf)

To calculate a square foot, multiply the media height and width required for your print (in inches), then divide by 144 (12x12 inches is one square foot). This is the number of square feet - now multiply this number ny the psf (per square foot) rate above, and you have your quote.

$50 minimum order.

For example - 24 x 17 print run (sufficient for A2 print) on fine art paper = 24*17/144*25= $70.83 (excl). This same page size could of course yield 2 x A3 prints, 4 x A4 prints, etc.

Mental Health Foundation Charity Art Auction

The NZ Art Guild and Mental Health Foundation of NZ (MHF) are proud to join together again to raise funds and awareness for MHF. MHF rely on donations to help provide resources and support to New Zealanders affected by mental health issues.

Please join them on July 2nd 6:30pm at the Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna, Auckland where the NZ Art Guild will unveil their amazing 2010 Collaborative Project "Bloom" and aucton 13 fantastic artworks.

"Bloom" is a unique artwork which comprises of 64 individual artworks by 62 artists from all over NZ. The theme of this artwork is New Beginnings and Growth. This artwork will be auctioned on Trademe with 100% of the proceeds donated to MHF.

We love what we do, and love even more when the outcomes delight our customers. Today we received a really nice bit of feedback that just has to be shared. The project was a birthday gift to be delivered under tight time-frame to the other end of the country - pressure was on! We got it there on time (Friday just gone), and here's what our customer had to say in an unsolicited email received before lunch today (Monday)...

"Well, the picture was leaning up against my desk when I arrived on Friday! I of course had to unpack it straight away and I showed it to everyone at work and ended up giving away all of your cards. So don't be surprised if a few people from down this way get in touch!

Anyway we gave it to Dad yesterday, and he was absolutely blown away with it. It went straight up on the wall (and actually onto a different wall than I had pictured, he was so rapt with it he had to put it on the main wall above their fire) and he wandered around it all afternoon admiring it :-)

ImageMe Photo Frenzies kick-off!

Welcome to a great new concept in making photography fun, and something that all enthusiasts can enjoy. Our client ImageMe has launched an exciting new activity - the Photo Frenzy and opened the studio for anyone interested in trying new things to come and have a go in a themed monthly photography activity.

You can see all the details on the Photo Frenzy website, but here's an example of the first theme you can try your hand at - Drawing with Light!

Next Photo Frenzy: December 6th, 10am - 1pm.

PHOTO FRENZIES are held on the first Sunday of every month (January is the exception, with the Frenzy being held on the 17th).

The Frenzy is free and open to everyone. Donations will be collected for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ - helping to restore vision to people in the Pacific region.

Each month there will be a different theme. Watch out for 'Quirky Characters', 'Hollywood Starlets' and more...

The first theme, Drawing with Light, gives you the chance to get creative!

The images will be posted online so participants can purchase prints.

The best images will be made into a large artwork and exhibited on the mezzanine floor of the Takapuna Library.

Competition Successes

It's a continuing source of satisfaction to rub shoulders with talented people. One always hopes that some of the talent will "rub off"! We like to bask in the reflected glory of their successes (even when it's not based on anything we've done!) So here are some happy tales which we pleased to share. :D

Malcolm McNeill is a client of ours doing extremely well with his photography. He has had two recent notable successes which we feel deserve a mention.

Auckland Photoday was way back in June - time flies when you're as busy as we are - it doesn't seem like very long ago we were racking our brains ourselves trying to think what to shoot for it. Of course we spent more time thinking than doing, and ultimately didn't enter this year. Hundreds of others did of course, and among them was Malcolm, about whose winning shot "Te Henga" the judges said:

"This is a cleverly composed and happy winter moment of fun obviously taken during a family’s beach trip. The son’s portrait is both a natural and positive image filled with genuine affection. Sometimes what seems the simplest image is the hardest to achieve."

No part of Malcolm's success with this can be attributed to Giclée Print Limited. We can, however, boast that this image did look absolutely wonderful printed on our textured fine-art paper, shortly after the competition.

The next item is one that we can lay claim to have played a small part in. Malcolm's image "The Swimmer" was awarded second prize in the North Shore National Salon of Photography, and was also printed by us on textured fine-art paper. Naturally, we think it looked great.

Don't be fooled!

Don't be fooled by canvas printers who have very low prices... chances are they use sub-standard materials, folks!

Naturally it is crucial to only use original, printer-manufacturer archival quality pigment-based inks, but that's not all...

Check the weight of the canvas - 450gsm is good, 350gsm - not so good, less than 250gsm is appalling.

Is the canvas white? That can be good, unless it was made white with "Optical Brightener Additives" in the inkjet receptor coating using these additives effectively eliminates any archival (long life) claims - even when using good inks and a protective coating - OBAs will cause your print to age, yellow and crack much sooner than a good quality canvas.

Is it pure cotton? This can be misleading - pure cotton is generally not as consistent in terms of fine texture, and introduces more blemishes such as seeds and knots.

The canvas we use passes all of these tests.

Sadly, there are companies out there who will use inferior materials and not even know what harm they are doing to your precious images in the long run.

It pays to check. Any giclee (digital inkjet) printing outfit that can not answer these questions appropriately may not be the best firm to trust with displaying your images to their best advantage.

Lisa Crandall of ImageMe produces work that is appreciated in a very measurable way: she keeps winning awards and accolades for her beautifully crafted images!

The latest trophies in Lisa's cabinet (which is getting pretty crowded) were awarded for all four images that were submitted to the Australian Professional Photography Awards. Fantastic result Lisa - well done!

What looks best - Fine Art paper print at A3 or A4?

We have recently answered a series of questions from a potential client asking about our Fine Art paper printing services, and the costs for these. These questions started with very general pricing enquiries, and ended up ultimately with the followinmg question, which I hadn't been asked before:

"Now before sending you some photos I would like to ask one more thing: to hang a photo on a wall what is a suitable size? A3? A4?"

This was our reply:

"I guess it depends on the nature of the image itself (is it something best appreciated at close inspection for small details?); related to this is the viewing distance (i.e. - how far away from the image will you be standing, usually, when observing it?). Also consider the size of the wall (too small a print will look silly, too big a print could dominate the room and look cumbersome). The size of your mat and frame will play a part in the appearance, and finally of course cost is always a consideration.

In my office and in our home I have a number of canvas and paper prints of varying sizes. Right in front of me is a HUGE seascape of a rolling surf wave - this is something like 60 x 38 inches! It's wonderful, and I can stare at it for hours - even sitting right in front of it (it fills my field of view). Slightly further away on the wall to my left are some small 8x12 snaps of family members - I can see them clearly enough, but I'd probably go over and look closely to enjoy them better. Adjacent to these are some really great family photos at 24x16 (about A2) or 24 x18 . This is one of our most popular and versatile print sizes. It's four times the size of an A4, and less then twice the price - so represents extremley good value.

You don't need to be restricted to these sizes, of course - you can always crop the image to a shape that is perhaps more square, or wider and more panoramic.

If the choice *must* be between A4 and A3 I'd go A3 as a good general purpose print size. BUT - if you order an A4, I'll have to charge you for an A3 anyway as the smallest paper we have available is 17" wide - i.e. you can have 2 x A4 prints OR 1 x A3 print on the same physical page, for $28 plus GST on fine art paper. (Remember there is normally a $50 minimum - so you could have 1 x A2 print, OR 2 x A3 prints, OR 4 x A4 prints, OR 1 x A3 AND 2 x A4 prints on the page, all for $56 (excl.)"

As an after-thought, it bears mentioning that the ISO A4 etc. sizes do not necessarily relate all that well to photographs, which are typically of either a 4:3 or 3:2 ratio. There's always some compromise!

For readers outside of NZ, please note all prices are in NZD (New Zealand Dollars) and for overseas orders there is no GST (sales tax) component to add. Overseas postage can be very inexpensively arranged for flat-packed or rolled prints.

We hope this answer is of help to anyone thinking about the best way to present their work.
