About the photographers

Images are an integral part of Greenpeace campaign work. We bear witness whenever we document our planet's beauty and its destruction. Through these images, we are able to send messages of hope and calls to action. Some of our powerful and inspiring images have been able to change the way people look at our planet and the environment.

The Arctic and Climate Change

The Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the globe and is experiencing some of the most severe climate impacts on Earth. One of the most notable is the rapid decline in the thickness and extent of sea ice.

The Arctic and Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is already suffering from climate change-induced disruptions in monsoon patterns; more frequent and more destructive typhoons in some parts of the region and extreme drought in others. Rising sea levels put low-lying, coastal areas and river systems at risk as well as making them more vulnerable to storms. The impacts of runaway climate are unbearable for the poorest majority of Southeast Asians who are the least responsible. We now know what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. Protecting the ice means protecting us all.

Green is Gold

Green can bring us gold: renewable energy can bring jobs, cost savings, and money to the Philippines. However, in the Philippines, ordinary citizens, business people, government workers, and even the president, have been bombarded with misinformation about renewable energy for decades. Here are just a few examples of outright untruths, often peddled by polluting industries: “Renewable energy is expensive,” or, “Renewable energy is a pie in the sky dream for tree huggers.” An even more popular misconception: “Coal is cheap.” This report is designed to fight such misleading rhetoric, debunk myths, and provide data-driven, balanced information about renewable energy in the Philippines.

Greenpeace International findings at sea, November 2012

During November 2012 Greenpeace International conducted a ship expedition in the waters of Palau and Pacific Commons area 1, the pocket of international waters between the EEZs of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. This is the sixth Greenpeace expedition in the Western and Central Pacific region to defend dwindling tuna stocks and expose the conservation, management and compliance challenges in this region. As part of this work the Government of Palau and Greenpeace cooperated in a joint surveillance exercise in Palauan waters. Similar exercises were conducted in 2011 with Palau, and in 2006 with Kiribati and Federated States of Micronesia.

Setting the limits on Western and Central Pacific tuna fisheries

This year’s annual meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) has the important task of putting in place new, more effective conservation and management measures (CMMs) to correct past mistakes and return the tuna fisheries of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) to sustainability and economic viability for the long-term. The failure of parties to this Commission to negotiate and implement an effective replacement CMM for bigeye and yellowfin tuna at its 8th Annual Session in Guam must not be repeated. Greenpeace urges that the Commission take into account first and foremost the precautionary approach when deliberating over new conservation and management measures for tuna and other species. The future consequences of our failure to act effectively today must not be underestimated.
