Labels in Mail

Like all Apple Mail clients, there was one annoying thing which wasn’t working properly: labels. It works like a charm on Sparrow, even with colors! Apple Mail does display the labels and working with them is easy by dragging the labels onto your favorites bar (see screenshot below). This will allow you to drag email messages onto the label in your favorites bar and this will move the message to that label. The only thing missing is colors, but we’ll have to just live without them.

Gmail’s archiving does work in Mail

Gmail’s archiving feature does work, but there’s a catch. You need to manually archive your mail.

Gmail and archiving

You first have to understand Gmail’s archiving feature: all your mail in Gmail is located in a label called ‘All mail’. When you receive a new email, this email will have two labels: ‘All mail’ and ‘Inbox’. When you archive an email in Gmail, the label ‘Inbox’ will be removed.

The problem

OSX Lion’s Mail works differently: it doesn’t remove the ‘Inbox’ label when archiving, but instead it adds another label: ‘Archive’.

The fix

So we’re screwed, right? Not really! There’s an easy fix, which takes about 5 seconds every time you wish to synchronize your archive with Gmail. Being a devoted lifehacker, manual archiving is something I’d like to avoid, but this is just how it is currently.

So without further ado, this is how it works.

1. First we open the [Gmail] folder by clicking on the arrow in front of the label [Gmail] in the left sidebar of Mail.
2. Open the ‘Archive’ folder
3. Now select all your archived messages by hitting ‘cmd + a’.
4. Drag your selection onto the ‘All mail’ folder inside the [Gmail] folder (see screenshot)
5. That’s it, you’re all done! Easy peasy!

Browsing the web can be frustrating at times. Flash banners crashing your browser, hideous comments on youtube videos, etc. Safari has some simple extension which make your browsing experience a lot more fun.

Enhance YouTube with YouTube5 and YoutubeWide

Whenever visiting YouTube, there’s a couple of things I usually do:
- Select a higher quality
- Disable comments/annotations
- Click the expand button

That’s my usual routine and just think about the time you’re wasting every single time you watch a movie. There’s two Safari extensions which do these things for you: YouTube5, which disables the flash movie-player of YouTube, and loads the HTML5 player, without annotations! The other extension is YoutubeWide which expands the video window to the full width of Youtube.

Kill those flash banners with ClickToFlash

Flash can really enhance webpages and is ideal for visualizing certain charts and/or movies, but it’s rarely used properly and often freezes your browser, especially on OSX.

No worries, there’s a fix for that now: ClickToFlash. It replaces all your flash player embeds on a page with a placeholder. Clicking the placeholder will load your flash component. This way you can still use flash if it’s really needed.

Minimal extensions

A lot of sites look better with minimal design. A lot of community sites I visited have this problem, like Reddit or MacRumors. Cornell Campbell did a nice job at creating some Safari Extensions which minimizes the design of some of these sites. They practically replace the site’s own CSS with a custom stylesheet. You can find Cornell’s extensions on his site.

Greystyled

There’s also some ‘greystyled’ extensions on the Safari Extensions Gallery which do the same to for example Instapaper.

More extensions

This was just a small portion of the available Safari Extensions. More extensions can be found on the Safari Extensions Gallery.

That’s what iA Writer does. It let’s you write.

That’s all it does really, write. No toolbars, no media, no charts, no fonts, no nothing, just a white canvas where you can type on. And by the way, there’s no mouse clicking either. I bet you have to get used to that.

Fullscreen & Focus Mode

Besides that we have a fullscreen mode, true full screen and Focus Mode, something which was introduced in the iPad version of iA Writer. It only highlights the sentence you are currently writing and fades out all other text. I use focus mode 99% of the time while I’m in Writer, it makes writing a lot more productive.

Markdown

The only tools you’re given is a, to me unknown, feature called markdown. It ables you to:

• Create headings
• Create numbered lists
• Hyphenated lists
• Starred lists
• Emphasize text
• Quotes are also possible
• Make text stronger

That’s all we need to do some proper writing. I can highly encourage you to buy it, if you want yourself to be productive at writing.

The power of Writer

To illustrate the effect Writer has on my writing: this article took me about 30 minutes to write, in English, a foreign language to me. It’s 1.44 right now, in the middle of the night, and I just felt like writing. iA Writer allows me to do just that.

It’s of the utmost importance to get more users and developers for MODX. We’re trying to get more users by holding talks for our partners and interested clients. Last friday was the first talk at MediaCT’s office, followed shortly by my talk at Traffic Builder’s office. Both companies are well known and highly respected firms in the Netherlands, so this could mean a real good start for our MODX campaign.

Friday Afternoon Session at MediaCT HQ in Groningen

The MediaCT MODX Friday Afternoon Session was streamed live and is also viewable on ustream at this very moment. There were 36 people in total, 18 in the room and 18 online. Slides can be found on Slideshare (Dutch slides).

The FAS keynote was focussed on developers and most questions from the audience were about how implementation was done. The most popular questions was about versioning for the content field, which is currently missing in MODX. Time for a feature request I guess!

Private keynote for Traffic Builders in Almere

The Traffic Builders keynote was private for Traffic Builders (TB) employees and a selection of interested clients. This particular presentation was more end-user and SEO focussed; More focus on TV’s, caching and form customization. All TB’s employees are SEO and/or SEA specialists and I managed to leave some very excited people behind.

Reading books about Magento is a dangerous path to take, because of the fast release cycle of Magento. Books released yesterday, might be out of date tomorrow. At the time of writing, the only up-to-date book for Magento 1.4 are:

• None
• at the
• moment

There are however many 1.3 books to choose from, so you might try your luck there. Please note that the database structure of Magento has some big differences between 1.3 and 1.4. You should expect changes in the API too because of this.

So, to recap: we have a very complex e-commerce application, we don’t have any up-to-date books and the manual simply sucks sucked… Peter to the rescue! There’s still a way to get into Magento and that’s by doing two things. Watch out, it requires reading!

First off, read the new tutorials in Magento’s new knowledge base. This should give you a good idea about the complexity of Magento and enlighten you with some of the logic behind the complexity.

Magento - Template Path Hints

Secondly, turn on the best feature of Magento: “Template Path Hints”. It fixes the most common Magento issue during theme development: “Where in my file tree do I find that block???”. Template Path Hints show you all the locations of your blocks in the front end of your shop. See the video below for a brief how-to.

An extra useful tip would be to learn Zend Framework. Magento is based on Zend Framework. Learning and understanding Zend Framework should make your Magento career a lot easier.

Een PHP script die hier uitkomst kan bieden is timthumb, één van de meest eenvoudige en effectieve thumbnail generator scripts.

Het enige wat je hoeft te doen is het PHP-bestand van timthumb (hier te downloaden) aan te roepen met enkele parameters:

src - bron van de afbeelding
w - breedte van de afbeelding in pixels, bijv. 200
h - hoogte van de afbeelding in pixels, bijv. 100
q - kwaliteit van de afbeelding in procenten. Is standaard 75. Persoonlijk zet ik deze altijd op 100 (%).
zc - zoom crop. Zet op 1 om te zoomen en te croppen in plaats van alleen maar te resizen/croppen.


Een voorbeeld timthumb aanroep zou dan zijn:

In het voorbeeld zal de afbeelding ‘images/afbeelding.jpg’ geresized worden, zonder te zoomcroppen, op 250×125 pixels. De kwaliteit is op 100% gezet.

Zoekmachine vriendelijk dankzij caching

Na de bekendmaking van Google dat snelheid van websites ook meetelt als ranking factor, is het erg belangrijk dat het maken van deze thumbnail niet teveel resources in beslag neemt. Gelukkig hebben de ontwikkelaars van timthumb een caching-mechanisme ingebouwd zodat het aanmaken van de thumbs niet elke keer hoeft te worden uitgevoerd. De thumbnails worden gecached en standaard opgeslagen in het mapje thumbs, in dezelfde map als het script. Denk erom dat je de map thumbs genoeg rechten geeft (chmod 777 op de map zou voldoende moeten zijn) zodat er ingeschreven kan worden.

Worden deze afbeeldingen wel geïndexeerd door zoekmachines?

Jazeker! Google indexeert gewoon de meegegeven parameters (de belangrijkste is in dit geval “src” en zorgt ervoor dat de afbeeldingen afzonderlijk geïndexeerd worden. Het is geen verkeerd idee om in Google Webmastertools in te stellen dat de andere parameters genegeerd worden: w, h, q en zc.

Deze vier parameters hebben geen meerwaarde voor de zoekmachines en zorgen ervoor dat de parameter “src” meer waarde krijgt, al is het waarschijnlijk maar een miniem verschil.

Eerlijkheidshalve moet ik wel toegeven dat het optimaler zou zijn om de afbeeldingen als ‘/afbeelding.jpg’ in de code te hebben staan i.p.v. ‘/timthubm.php?src=afbeelding.jpg’ maar het is altijd beter dan de bekende afbeelding-namen die via een hash gegenereerd zijn.

Conclusie

Timthumb is een uitstekende oplossing om snel en eenvoudig thumbnails te maken. Zelf heb ik het zowel in MODx als WordPress installaties gebruikt en tot zover geen problemen ondervonden. Een aanradertje!

Kom ik op mijn reis over het web een mooie site tegen? Dan ‘snap’ ik de site, voeg ik relevante tags toe, geef de site een rating en upload de screenshot (high res PNG) in mijn private flickr set (ten minste, dat is de bedoeling – het gaat niet áltijd goed). De URL waarvan de screenshot is gemaakt wordt automatisch opgeslagen in Flickr als commentaar, zodat je de werkende site ook nog eens kan bekijken.

Werkt Little Snapper niet met jouw favoriete browser?

Geen nood! Je kan een zogenaamde bookmarklet in je bookmark bar slepen. Sleep de link op deze pagina in je bookmarks bar en klik voortaan op deze link om een snap te maken van je sites.

Nu begint Google de aankondiging met het vermelden van de enterprise-status van Google Analytics, maar als deze eigen opt-out het mogelijk maakt geen tracking meer plaats te laten vinden, dan ben je zo’n enterprise status snel weer kwijt. Veel data is niet meer correct en het zal niet meer mogelijk zijn om te zien waar je conversies vandaan komen…

Nu is Google Analytics natuurlijk bedoeld om trends weer te geven, maar ook de tendens van trends zijn dan verre van accuraat. Het is allemaal nog speculatie natuurlijk na deze ietwat vage aankondiging. Ook is het twijfelachtig dat de doorsnee internetgebruiker het gaat gebruiken en de hardcore internet gebruiker blokkeerde de Analytics cookie misschien al met Adblock plus in Firefox. Juist de hardcore internetgebruiker zal deze opt-out gaan gebruiken.

Om nog wat verder te speculeren… Misschien is het geen complete opt-out en worden adres gegevens alleen nog op land-niveau weergegeven en is het mogelijk om wat andere data niet meer door te geven, zoals browser-gegevens, OS, etc. Hier zet ik mijn geld dan maar op in. Ik moet er niet aan denken een ander pakket te gaan gebruiken.
