Devices like the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab receive constant media attention. These devices, without a doubt, are changing the way that we live. The new iPad’s Retina display delivers crystal clear streaming video, and its 4G LTE connectivity keeps you in the loop no matter where you are. However, even though the iPad may get all of the accolades, the laptop may prove more useful in the long run, particularly for working professionals.

One of the iPad’s biggest limitations is storage. Most notebooks start at 250 GB of storage while the most expensive iPads only deliver 64 GB. While data can be stored in the cloud, people who generate content professionally including writers, musicians and filmmakers need the on-hand storage capacity that the notebook computer can deliver. In addition, notebooks deliver more in terms of processing power. For programs like CADs or for gaming with HD sound and video adaptors, you’ll need a notebook to handle the job.

For document preparation and processing, a notebook provides a superior experience. A notebook computer screen starts at 13 inches; some notebooks even have 3D monitors. A tablet screen, on the other hand, spans between seven and 10 inches. While a USB keyboard can be attached to a tablet, carrying around extra accessories like a keyboard and a docking station negates the portability advantage of the tablet. Also, the Microsoft Office suite, which is still a staple for most businesses, does not run on a tablet device. Many people prefer the convenience of Office as opposed to migrating to a cloud-based suite such as Google Docs.

A notebook computer is easier to upgrade than a tablet. For instance, if you need more memory for your notebook computer, then you can purchase a new hard drive and swap out your old one. If you decide that you want more memory for your tablet, then you have to purchase an entirely new tablet. Operating systems are also interchangeable on a notebook; you can run any generation of Windows or Linux. With tablets, however, you are locked into the OS that comes with the device.

Many analysts argue that the iPad is generally a tool for content consumption while the notebook is a tool for content creation. If current market trends hold, then the iPad may eventually take a significant bite out of the market for devices like dedicated e-Readers and portable gaming consoles. However, only one-third of iPad owners, according to a Resolve Market Survey, say that they have decided not to purchase a notebook after purchasing their iPads. The same survey found that only 25 percent of iPad owners felt that their tablet made the notebook computer obsolete.

The laptop may have been around longer, but it’s still the ultimate choice for mobile computing needs. Your notebook computer has all of the equipment, accessories and applications that you need in a friendly, easy-to-use format. Tablets may one day outsell notebook computers and desktop PCs. However, for working professionals, notebooks will never become obsolete.

It’s scientifically proven… at some point or another, whether we like it or not, we’ll all have that dreaded day when we realize we’re holding the newspaper an arm’s length away to read it.

Presbyopia – the inability to see near objects clearly – is usually first noticed in the ages between 40 and 50, and try as we might it’s not something we can avoid. The good news is that the market is awash with reading glasses and multifocal contact lenses to ease the problem. The even better news is that recently, an app has emerged claiming the ability to reduce the condition’s effects and reduce our ‘eye age’ by as much as 20%.

Innovation, it seems, was clearly focused on the product itself rather than clever naming, as developers ‘Ucansi’ (did someone say cheesy?) prepare to launch their app-child ‘GlassesOff’.

How does it work?

The technology relies on training the eyes to see patterns known as Gabor Patches, which in plain terms are blurry lines produced through exploiting a grey background. Development has been lengthy, and it is reported that a large majority of subjects were able to see as much as two lines further down on an eye test after undergoing the procedure.

How much will it cost?

So that’s the good news. The bad news is that the app looks like it’s going to set you back around £60 ($96). Added to this is the fact that due to the need for a top notch display for the software to work, it will initially be limited solely to new versions of the iPhone – costing somewhere in the region of £500 ($802).

And the wallet assault doesn’t end there. £60 ($96) buys you the initial app and three months worth of training, however Ucansi have indicated that in order to receive further training after this period, a monthly fee will apply.

That said though, rumours are spreading fast that the company may well be looking into converting their software onto a Windows supported platform. As well as this, with the prices of corrective laser surgery stretching comfortably into the thousands, this might suddenly sound like a much more persuasive deal after all.

The future?

Certainly this is a very intriguing app and one that’s worth keeping an eye on to see how things develop. What I find most exciting though is that this could well be a step toward aiding other eyesight problems without invasive surgery… perhaps we’ll see an iCure for problems like myopia in the near future?

If you are an owner of a Garmin Nuvi GPS or sat nav product you will from time to time need to update the maps on the device, if only for the simple reason that directions can become out of date. This is down to the fact that new roads and streets start to appear on a regular basis so the mapping that came pre-installed on the Nuvi will no longer be 100% accurate – in fact, as soon as you buy the product the maps are going to be old versions. Thankfully Garmin offer a solution to their customers which lets them download free maps for the device, but there are a number of caveats in place before you do so. Read on for everything you need to know including information on how you can update your GPS for free.

Where to Get Free Garmin Map Updates

Authentic and reliable free Garmin map updates are available directly from Garmin as part of their nuMaps Guarantee program. As a customer you will need to fulfil some criteria in order to qualify for your new map upgrade, but once you have done that actually putting the map refresh on your Nuvi is really simple.

The criteria are based upon how long you have owned the device for. Currently Garmin are only offering free downloads to customers that are within the first three months or ninety days of ownership – so if that sounds like you, make sure you go and register your product with them now before it is too late.

How to Update Your Garmin Nuvi GPS

Installing your Garmin map update is really easy and if you want to know how to update Garmin Nuvi then follow these directions. All you need to do is find the mapping section on the Garmin website – this is usually accessible via the top navigation on the website – and then choose the nuMaps Guarantee option.

Once you have selected this choice you will need to register the Nuvi GPS with your details and enter in the serial number of the product. The serial number can be found on the back of the GPS device. Once all these checks have been passed you will be lead through an easy map install process, providing that your Nuvi is connected to your PC or Mac with a Garmin USB cable.

The whole install process to get your free Garmin map usually takes no longer than thirty minutes so as soon as you are done you can jump back in your car and get to your next destination with ease. If you struggle to do this properly, then you will find the Garmin support is very good – you can either read online FAQs, or contact their multi-lingual support centers for additional help.

Why Use Official Garmin Map Updates?

There is no point installing un-official map updates because they may not be entirely accurate and you could run this risk of invalidating any warranty that came with the GPS product. Garmin maps are known to be very reliable and millions of car and truck journeys rely on them every day – they also supply GPS solutions for the marine and aviation sectors where mistakes can be fatal. As a result, the company is one of the most trusted GPS brands on the planet today and they are the best-selling manufacturer in the industry.

The launch pad

When the iPad was launched in 2010, many heralded it as a definitive technology moment in what was still a very new decade. Some perhaps saw this gleaming, pristine computing device as an outsized iPhone (which is technically true), but it very quickly became obvious that it was a game changer in the world of computing. Being a mobile device, it suddenly appeared everywhere – from smart offices, to television broadcasts, and in ordinary folk’s hands on public transport as they quietly read their broadsheet newspaper on it. Or played Angry Birds.

As a result of this boom in mobile computing, it soon became apparent that the mobile web was accelerating beyond any reasonable predictions. Is the mobile web different from the desktop web? In some ways, no: as humans we’ll always have the same broad interests, so the actual types of content we see on the web will continue. The change is in the way the content’s consumed. Someone using an iPad on the go is going to need a website that works well with the hardware, and they’re also going to be looking for information to be served up faster: no time to browse through lists.

Rise of the apps

This could – in part, at least – help explain the phenomenal rise of the app in present day computing. If you want info on a health condition and you’re on a PC, then you might go to various medical encyclopaedias, spend a bit of time finding info. With a touch screen smartphone, however, there just isn’t the screen space to do this in any kind of easy, comfortable or fun way. Info has to be tailored to the medium in which it’s presented – and in a concentrated, directed way as well. Info on health conditions is well presented in a variety of well-known and top selling healthcare apps. They’re not presented as a substitute for consulting a health professional, though. So if you have a health concern, your doctor is still the person to see.

And some apps these days are emerging aimed not at the general consumer but at healthcare professionals and medical students. Just one look at an app like Skeletal System Pro III and it’s immediately obvious how the sharp display and intuitive operating of the iPad lends itself so well to apps designed for use in a medical setting. Another clue as to the quality and professional potential for apps like these is in the price – they’re clearly not aimed at the pocket money market. Having said that, they’re cheaper than the average hardback book in the medical section of your local bookshop.

Global health trends and possible futures

It’s no secret that with emerging economies such as those of India and China, big healthcare markets will open up to offer services to the people who live in those countries. The sheer number of people means that not only will demand for healthcare skyrocket – the process of meeting that demand will act as an important driver of innovation within the industry. Potentially, even, to the extent that the fruits of said innovation will be reaped universally.

And one of the big things to consider here will be the role played by social networking and the mobile internet. Gone are the days when making appointments or receiving test results meant the manipulation and transportation of bits of paper around the physical world. Factor in the continuing rise of health informatics, and what we have is, hopefully , a golden future that makes the 20th century – and what an incredible amount of innovation that 100 years saw – look almost antediluvian by comparison.

Ian contributes to various health and technology blogs on behalf of AXA PPP International, a healthcare service for expatriates.

Temple Run

This action based game revolves around the story line of an explorer attempting to steal an idol from a temple. The game is literally endless in action because it will just keep loading more challenges for the player to get through until he or she fails to do so.

In the game, the player is being chased down by “demonic monkeys” who are attempting to capture the hero and thus end the game. There are also several other obstacles that the hero must face while trying to run away from these demonic monkeys. The game is played by tilting the iPad or iPhone to make jumping and avoiding moves.

The fun of this game is that the action is literally endless. It is just a constant challenge to push yourself to last longer and longer in the game. It is mostly a reaction time testing game. There are few other skills that one would need to be good at this one. Even though it is such a simplistic game, it is one of the top 50 downloaded games on the App Store.

Draw Something

A game title that is a command, nice! There is something to be said for a game that helps unlock our artistic abilities. That game currently is Draw Something. Not only are players challenged to draw pictures, but the other participants in the game must attempt to guess what the pictures are. They are given a certain amount of letters that are contained in the word to do this. However, those letters are jumbled up so that the participant actually has to figure out what the other person is drawing. Thus, it could be argued that this game is challenging people on more than just one level.

Draw Something took off as a mobile app almost instantly. In its first five weeks on the scene it grabbed some 20 million downloads. After 50 days it was up to 50 million downloads. That is an incredible rate for any app to be downloaded, and it is a good thing this one did become so popular. The game itself requires many players playing with each other all the time. Players get to choose when to log in and play the game, so it is nice to have many friends who are playing all at once to keep the action rolling. With this many people downloading the game, it should not be a problem for most!

Angry Birds Space

Continuing the popular Angry Birds genre, Angry Birds Space is just the latest addition to this very well known series. In this game birds are launched into block structures in an attempt to knock them over. Earlier versions of the Angry Birds games had a flat screen surface to the game, but this space version does not. Each level has its own 3-D field of play and its own amount of gravity. These things actually have an impact on the trajectory of the birds that are launched. Thus, these new factors do impact the whole game quite a bit.

Angry Birds lovers need to have the space version to experience the very latest in this storied game. There are so many things about this version that you do not want to miss out on.

Mobile games are likely to continue their rise in popularity. More people than ever have mobile devices capable of playing these games, and those numbers are only rising. If this trend keeps up, it is exciting to think about all of the great games that will be released in the near future.

This article has been provided by one of the PlayVille.org gaming bloggers, the site that offers all of the biggest free online games such as Temple Run Online and many others.

There’s nothing better than driving on the open road, but that feeling can quick turn to frustration if you find that your GPS has sent you down the wrong route or not managed to find the location you were aiming to arrive at. Many drivers experience out of date maps on their GPS but can easily update the maps by downloading from the manufacturer websites such as Garmin and TomTom… but what happens if you have an in-built factory-installed GPS in your car that needs updating? This is a problem that can occur with Honda Civic cars that come with the Honda Navigation System.

If you are a Civic owner, don’t despair, because whilst you can download Honda map updates you can instead install new software via a DVD-set. Read on to find out how you do it, the benefits to doing so, and why you should update your Honda Navigation System with the new 2012 DVD.

Updating Your Civic’s GPS with the Honda Navigation DVD

On the dashboard of your Honda Civic you should find a disc drive for inserting new map update DVDs. If you don’t see the drive on your dash, then it could be located in the glove box or under the passenger seat. Older models and generations of the Honda Civic tend to have it hidden away – if you can’t find it consult your car’s user manual. But how do you get the new disc set?

You will need to visit the official Honda website and on there you will find a link to updating your maps. This will take you to the website of Navteq (the company that supplies maps to all the GPS manufacturers) who host a dedicated Honda Navigation Store. Once on this website you can select your Honda model, which will be Civic, and then the year that your car was manufactured.

Buy the New Honda Navigation DVD Online

This will then return a list of all the Honda Navigation DVDs which is compatible with your car. For example, drivers based in the United States will need to select the 2012 North American Honda Navigation DVD – and then click to add to their shopping cart. Prices tend to start around the $150 US Dollar mark, which might sound quite expensive, but when compared to buying a new GPS is actually a competitive price. Once you have purchased the new disc it will take about 7 working days to arrive.

Installing Honda Navigation System Updates to Your Civic

So your new Honda Navigation DVD has arrived… what next? It’s pretty simple. All you do is eject the existing DVD from the disc drive that you found earlier and then insert the new 2012 DVD. The GPS display should automatically kick-in and will flash up the text “INSTALL NEW MAP UPDATES”. Select “YES” and the install process should begin – but it will ask you to insert your unique Navteq customer identification number. This can be found on the Honda DVD packaging so make sure that you don’t lose this sheet of paper.

The whole install process can take anything up to forty five minutes, especially on older versions of the Honda Civic. The key to success is to not turn the GPS navigation system off during the install as this has been known to corrupt the software meaning you will need to start all over again – or in more extreme cases seek support from your local Honda dealer in order to resolve the problem. Once the map updates have installed the word “SUCCESS” appears on the GPS display and you’re ready to drive again with renewed confidence.

Why Update Your Honda Civic GPS?

It might seem like a lot of money, but research shows that drivers using a modern GPS device with up to date maps and real-time traffic alerts will actually save money in the long-term. This is because they spend less time behind the wheel driving, or in traffic jams. As a result, fuel bills are reduced, plus it is even possible to reduce the carbon footprint of your driving lifestyle. For more information on this research do a Google search for Navteq and Nokia’s German study on driving habits from 2009.

About the Author:

Tablets have become quite affordable these days and come with better features and usability. Although still lagging behind conventional desktops and laptops on several features, it does come with one great advantage- Portability. This fact makes it a big hit among people who commute for long distance; spend long time outdoors or just like to watch a movie sitting in a park under the tree. Businessmen always want to be up to date and donít like to be left behind in any race- including technology and hence there is a surge in use of tablets in Business applications. It is however harder to select the perfect business tablet as there are greater demand in business world as compared to normal use.

Some points to take in consideration to choose the perfect business tablet PC are:

Power-

A business tablet cannot be slow and unreliable. Hence make sure that your business tablet does not compromise on processor speed and RAM. Make sure you get nothing less than an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor or an Apple A5X dual core processor. A minimum of 1 GHz Processor will make sure that your applications are executed fast and smooth. Also the RAM (Random Access Memory) plays a big role in executing applications and you must aim for something around 1 GB RAM or more.

Memory-

If your business requirements are confined to spreadsheets, word documents and other data, then you donít need much internal memory. On the other hand if you deal with lot of videos, images etc. then you need to seriously consider the memory storage. Tablets generally come with 4GB internal memory to 64 GB and are sufficient for general office work. On the other hand if your memory requirements are higher, then consider buying a tablet which supports external memory card.

Operating System-

Unlike computers, changing Operating System on a tablet is hard if not impossible. You have to stick with the same operating system and wait for updates on it. Andriod, iOS, Windows 7 etc. are some of the operating system which are quite reliable and widely used. Try the operating systems and make sure that you are comfortable with it before you buy the tablet.

Keyboard-

Some tablets come with attachable keyboards (like Asus Transformer Prime) while you get the option to use a Bluetooth keyboard with some. If you are into heavy typing jobs, then consider the various keyboard and mouse options available to you and make the choice accordingly. One advantage tablets with attachable keyboards have on other tablets is that you can easily type on it even while on commute.

Connectivity-

Connectivity is very important while choosing a business tablet. Some of the connectivity options to take into account-

1. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth- Almost all tablets come with Wi-Fi for internet connection. However still make sure that it is included in you tablet. Similarly Bluetooth is necessary for data transfer between devices and is generally available in all the tablets available in the market.

2. 4G LTE- Move over 3G, 4G LTE is the new leader in mobile internet service. Having 4G LTE will makes sure that you are connected to internet even if you are not in a Wi-FI zone.

3. USB port- A USB port can come handy in many ways including adding an external keyboard, external memory storage etc. Tablets come with mini USB, standard USB and no USB options. Having a USB port for business use is however recommended.

4. HDMI port- You can directly load presentations via your tablet if there is a HDMI port available in it.

It seems like most of us can divide our days into three equal parts: one third spent sleeping, one third spent in our cars and one third spent messing with our smartphones. And let’s be honest, often the time spent in our cars and messing with our smart phones overlaps, right?

Here are 6 apps that unite our smartphone and automotive worlds. Check them out, some are new and several are sporting new features that make them even more appealing.

TomTom
TomTom has been the leading GPS, turn-by-turn navigation app for a long time. Because TomTom downloads maps to your phone—unlike your built-in iPhone maps app—your map doesn’t disappear when you hit a dreaded dead zone. And now the latest update has brought in the world of social networking. You can search and navigate with Facebook and also share your destination via Twitter, Facebook, email or a regular text message. Now you won’t have to call everyone in your life to tell them you’ve arrived safely. This iOS app will set you back $60, but it can definitely be worth it.

Scout
This iPhone app is designed to be your personal navigator. The free version offers traffic based driving times, route information, traffic jam avoidance information, favorites and more. Another popular features with the free app is its huge database of points-of-interest. A few features are free for the first 30 days, like voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation, and afterwards require a subscription.

Escort Live
For road warriors, next to their vehicle, their most important gear is their smartphone and radar detector. Escort is bringing together iPhones and Android devices with radar detectors and plugging them into a social network to deliver super high octane radar, laser, and speed trap information up to 25 miles out. Drivers get voice and visual alerts in real time. The setup requires a $100 SmartCord Live, which includes the first year’s subscription to the service. The pricing of additional years has not yet been announced. The app is a free download.

Speedometer + HUD
Most of us have day dreamed about being a jet fighter pilot and one of the coolest parts of that dream is the heads-up-display. Here’s a free iPhone app that brings a heads-up-display to your car. Hey, could this be the coveted smartphone app that we’ll actually be encouraged to use while driving? You locate your iPhone on your dash so the app projects your speed onto your windshield, and if you break the speed limit, you’ll get a warning—a courtesy the next state trooper down the road is unlikely to extend.

Zilla: Digital Dashboard & HUD
The same folks who provide the free Speedometer + HUD take it several steps further in this $2.99 app. Here you get a heads-up-display that you might find in a $500,000 super car, or at least one of the better X-Box racing games. Check your G Forces while cornering and braking, as well as speed, air temp, tire loading, directional bearing and more. You can even control your music with iPod buttons. By the way, the heads-up-displays in this and the previous app work best at night.

Find My Car
How many times have you come out of the ballpark looking for your silver mid-sized compact sedan and searched for over an hour before you found it? With this free iPhone app, that will never be a problem again. Find My Car tells you how far away your vehicle is and gives you walking directions. For Android users there’s the similar Parkdroid.

Chris Turberville-Tully is a marketing strategist for HR Owen, a luxury car dealer selling new and used Bentley, Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari cars in England.

Not too long ago if you had to change doctors or visit a specialist you had to wait until one doctor sent your records to the other before treatment could begin. Worse, if you were in the emergency room the ER personnel may have difficulty finding out what past medical problems you have experienced, especially if you are visiting a facility for the first time.

Keeping a file of your medical records has long been recommended, but most people could not easily carry their life’s medical past with them with bringing along a large file folder. At least until now. One of the newest apps for the iPhone, My Life record is a place where you can store your medical history to provide an official copy of your medical records directly from your iPhone. It is supported by the operating systems for the iPhone and iPad Touch as well as on your MAC or PC, along with Android powered Smartphones.

The HIPPA law that dictates medical record privacy also guarantees that every patient is able to receive a copy of their medical record and carries the stipulation your physician must provide to you. By keeping a copy of your past health with My Life Record if you are out of town on vacation and need to see a new doctor, the information you can provide with your permanent medical record can prove invaluable in recommending treatment. Allergies listed in your records can be life-saving and will ensure any treatment follows any treatment that is already in progress.

Why My Life Record

My Life Record helps you organize and maintain all y our important medical records... your TRUE medical record, not just information you've put in it - your official record.

The best thing about My Life Record is that it is a legal verifiable copy of your medical records. Using the new technology you can retain a copy for your own use or for sharing with medical professionals, as well with your family. You can also use the app to make notes for yourself to pull up later to ask your doctor about changes in your well-being or other things you notice and may forget about before your next visit.

Whenever you visit your doctor, or a different doctor or hospital they all ask for a current list of any medication, and My Life Record has a dedicated section for that information. Most people will know what prescriptions they are on but may fail to mention any over-the-counter medications they use. This can be valuable to your physicians as some OTC drugs can interact with prescription medications. With a simple click you can add a medication, dosage information and when it was prescribed, or eliminated, to create a permanent record of your prescription history.

My Life Record can also save information about your lab results and for people with high cholesterol or other acute disorder this can provide valuable information about changes you may need to make in your lifestyle. You can also store images that are part of your medical history to help track any changes that may have occurred in X-rays, MRIs or ultrasound. Actually seeing the image provides more information than simply reading about what the physician saw on the image.
