Assassin Creed Easter Eggs !!!

Carl Jung

Psychologist Carl Jung was referenced throughout the Assassin's Creed series:

The Animus was named for Jung's anima and animus.
Women in the series such as Eve, Maria Thorpe, Maria Auditore da Firenze and Sofia Sartor (mostly wives of the male Assassins) shared their names with stages of anima development, a male's inner feminine personality.
Furthermore, in the Abstergo Files, it was stated they believed their research would put an end to the debate over the existence of Jung's collective unconsciousness.

Assassin's Creed

Jamal

In Assassin's Creed, upon leaving Masyaf for the first time, one of the Assassins in the Kingdom, Jamal, could be silently assassinated with no consequences. However, openly attacking him would prompt the other Assassins to attack Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Jamal was the traitor inside the Order that, along with Masun, opened the gates for the Templar siege of Masyaf. He was originally featured as a mission target to be assassinated, but the mission was cut and he remained as a minor Easter egg.

Transformers

An arrangement of windows seen on certain buildings formed the torso of Optimus Prime, in his vehicle form (a truck) from the Transformersfranchise.^[1]

Assassin's Creed II

Batman

Occasionally in Assassin's Creed II, while freerunning or climbing a building, a male bystander could be heard saying "Another capering crusader." This was a reference to the DC Comics superhero Batman, who used stealth and had a tendency to run on rooftops. As well as this, Batman was sometimes referred to as the "Caped Crusader".

Dummy keys

In the missions "Knowledge Is Power" and "Hunting the Hunter", Ezio could loot any of the dummy targets and find keys. However, these keys had no effect at all.

Ghosts of the past

By downloading the Bonfire of the Vanities downloadable content, Ezio Auditore was briefly able to see a vision of his entire family. After meeting up with Niccolò Machiavelli, Ezio could return to the Palazzo Auditore and step into the center of the courtyard, where he would enter into a state similar to his Eagle Vision and be able to see the figures of his parents and all of his siblings around the palazzo. However, the vision would disappear and would not be able to seen again if Ezio left.

A giant squid could be found within the Assassin Tomb beneath Santa Maria della Visitazione. To find the giant squid, Ezio must pull the lever that activated the swinging poles for progressing further into the tomb but look down into the water near to the lever for one minute instead.

Once a minute or so had passed, a cutscene played, which showed a large squid swimming by. A second cutscene could then be activated if the lever was pulled once more and Ezio looked down again. Following this, the cutscene showed Ezio narrowly dodging one of the squid's tentacles before it swam away.

Mario AuditoreEdit

When Ezio first met his uncle, Mario Auditore, he said the phrase "It's-a-me! Mario!," to the Assassin, which was a reference to the Super Mario Brothers franchise.

MotownEdit

When throwing coins amongst the crowd, female bystanders would sometimes cry "Money! That's what I want!", which was a reference to the classic Motown song.

Palazzo Ducale

After using the "Super jump" or "Fence glitch" to get into the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia, Ezio could access the Doge's quarters where Carlo Grimaldi assassinated the Doge. The candle that Carlo Grimaldi and Doge Mocenigo were playing under was unlit, but the chess pieces were in exactly the same position, though Ezio assassinated Grimaldi years ago.

After going into these quarters, the sky and the building turned a blood red. However, this might not have been intentional, but accidental, as scenery when entering other buildings such as the Villa Auditore lightened or darkened to match the interior of that building. In this case, the tone was changed to orange or red to match the interior of the specific room, and so the outside scenery and sky changed to orange and red respectively.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

If Desmond went out to the front of the Villa Auditore and used Eagle Vision, there were a number of red footprints that could be seen which led up to the Assassins' insignia.

Various developers have stated that this was to lead the audience to where they needed to go, as some players weren't sure on what to do towards the start of the game. However, as red was supposed to signify something undesirable in Eagle Vision, it led to some confusion on the subject. As such, the developers have stated that the color of the footprints was an oversight, resolving the issue.

Castle CrashersEdit

The first memory in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood near to the Castel Sant'Angelo was called "Castello Crasher." This was a reference to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 downloadable game, Castle Crashers.

Grand Theft AutoEdit

The achievement "Grand Theft Dressage" was a clear reference to the Grand Theft Auto game series.

Machiavelli's worksEdit

Shortly after Ezio successfully enlisted the help of the three other faction guilds, Niccolò Machiavelli asked Ezio how he had managed it. Ezio simply answered that it was "Virtù", a concept about the spirit of leadership that Machiavelli was later known to have theorized. Also, at the end of Sequence 7, Machiavelli stated "I intend to write a book about you one day." to Ezio, who responded with "If you do, make it short." This was clearly a reference to Machiavelli's famous (and brief) book, "The Prince."

Finally, an achievement entitled "Il Principe" (which translated to "The Prince") could be unlocked by achieving 100% synchronization for all of the memories in Brotherhood, including the ones included within The Da Vinci Disappearance DLC.

Mario referencesEdit

In the mission "Femme Fatale," after Ezio killed all of the guards and dragged Lucrezia Borgia towards Caterina Sforza's cell, she commented "Rescuing princesses from castles now?" This was a reference to the Super Mario Bros. games, where Mario rescued Princess Peach from Bowser's castle.

Accompanying this, one of the Brotherhood achievements was entitled "Principessa in Another Castello." This translated to "Princess in another castle," which was told to Mario in the original Mario games whenever he defeated Bowser's minions in their castles.

Another Mario reference was the achievement "Plumber", which showed the picture of a Mario world Warp Pipe.

Metal Gear SolidEdit

Just before reuniting with Leonardo da Vinci, Ezio came across an anachronistic factory-made cardboard box, though he looked away when Leonardo came around the corner. This was a reference to the Metal Gear Solidseries, as the signature stealth move of Solid Snake (the series' protagonist) was to hide in a box or crate.

A second tribute was the Raiden suit, available to those who had completed every challenge in the Animus Virtual Training Program with at least a bronze medal, a reference to how the character Raiden was trained in only virtual simulations.

MontrealEdit

During the memory "Trojan Horse," while escorting Bartolomeo d'Alviano and his mercenaries disguised as French soldiers, a French guard asked Ezio Auditore as to which region of France he hailed from, to which he replied "Montréal." This was likely a reference to the location of Ubisoft Montreal, the main developers of the Assassin's Creed series.

Montreal was also the largest city in the French-speaking province of Quebec in Canada. Alternatively, it could be a reference to the birthplace of Francisco Randez – the model after whom Desmond Miles was designed.

Project LegacyEdit

On Lucy Stillman's computer monitors in the Sanctuary, the Memories menu of Assassin's Creed: Project Legacywas displayed, set to the memories of Mario Auditore.

In the first memory of Altaïr in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Jamal could be seen, again viewed in red when in Eagle Vision. This first occurred in the original game, Assassin's Creed.

Hello WorldEdit

In the very first sequence, Subject 16 talked to Desmond Miles about the place in the Animus that he was currently in, Animus Island, stating that it was the test world first created by Rebecca Crane to gain a feeling for the confines of the machine.

Afterwards, he proclaimed "Hello World!", which was a reference to the common test program named a Hello World project. This project was often used to familiarize a programmer with the basics of a programming language.

Monty PythonEdit

In the mission The Brawler, after having been defeated three times in a row, the encountered citizen said "Ah... we will call it a draw, alright?" This was a reference to the movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail, in which the Black Knight challenged King Arthur to a fight and, after both his arms and legs were cut off, said "Alright. We'll call it a draw."

Muhammad AliEdit

Sometimes during fighting or after defeating guards, civilians yelled "Floats like a butterfly, stings like a scorpion!" This line also occurred when random civilians want to fistfight Ezio. This was a reference to the famous boxer,Muhammad Ali, who described his fighting style as "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

Spider-ManEdit

There was an achievement entitled "Spider Assassin" in which the player had to climb the top of the Hagia Sophiain under 25 seconds. The title and achievement was a reference to the popular Marvel Comics' superhero Spider-Man and his ability to scale up and around buildings with incredible speed.

SupermanEdit

One title in the second stage of the Animi Training Program was "Man of Steel". This was an obvious reference toDC Comics' hero, Superman, as his nickname was known as the Man of Steel.

In the first tome of the novel, during Desmond's flashback, the Prince of Persia, the main protagonist of the famous Ubisoft series, appeared on the screen of the arcade game monitor at the "L'Horizon" bar.

Assassin's Creed in other mediaEdit

The characters, gameplay elements, and plot of Assassin's Creed were also featured in various other media.

AdventureQuestEdit

In AdventureQuest, the Assassin job class had a level 10 Guardian skill called "Finishing Blow." After clicking this, it had another button called "Assassin's Creed." Additionally, the armor "Whispering Raiment" had two Hidden Blades on the left arm.

In AdventureQuest Worlds, there was two outfits available for purchase at the suggestion shop in Yulgar's inn, which were the "Hashashin Armor," priced at 500,000 gold for free players, and the "Armored Hashashin Armor," priced at 300,000 gold for upgraded members of the game. The Hashashin Armor included two Hidden Blades, though they were located on top of the player's wrist, rather than on the bottom.

Dead IslandEdit

In Dead Island, there was a wieldable knife named "Assassin's Greed". Accompanying this, there was also a modification for brass knuckles called the "Assassin's Poison Mod".

Dragon Age IIEdit

In Dragon Age II, the brothel in Hightown was called the "Blooming Rose," a direct translation of the Roman courtesan headquarters, the Rosa in Fiore.

Dungeon DefendersEdit

In Dungeon Defenders, the character "The Archer", the male version of "The Huntress" for the PC, could obtain a Halloween costume that resembled a black Master Assassin robe set.

Gaia OnlineEdit

During the 2011 Halloween event in Gaia Online, Edmund, the shop owner for H & R Wesley, was dressed as Ezio.

Grand Theft Auto IVEdit

In Grand Theft Auto IV, after completing a set of assassination missions for a mysterious figure called the Fixer, the player received an achievement called Assassin's Greed, which was a direct play on the Assassin's Creedname. Moreover, the requirement for the achievement was the completion of nine assassination missions, which paralleled the first Assassin's Creed game, in which Altaïr was tasked by Al Mualim to kill nine Templars in exchange for his reinstatement as a Master Assassin.

inFAMOUS 2Edit

Located in the fictional city of New Marais, several cinemas and theaters ininFAMOUS 2 featured movie titles that were direct puns of popular video game names. Among the movie titles was "Assassin's Need (Love Too)", a parody on Assassin's Creed. These cinemas were located in the very first district of the city. Also, one of the negative karmic missions available in the game was named "Assassin's Greed", another play on the Assassin's Creed name.

Another Easter egg found in the game's downloadable content, inFamous 2: Festival of Blood, could be seen again on the cinemas' featured movie titles. The new parody title was "Assassin's Bleed", which was also a reference to the download content's central theme of vampires.

Invictus GamesEdit

In the iPhone games Froggy Jump and Froggy Launcher, a torso item called "Assassin armor" appeared identical to Ezio's armor in Assassin's Creed II, and could be bought for 2 Diamonds.

LittleBigPlanetEdit

As a part of their promotion for Assassin's Creed II, Ubisoft released Ezio's Assassin costume as a downloadable outfit for the PlayStation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet on 8 December 2009.

On the day that Revelations was released, LittleBigPlanet released a new costume of Ezio, featuring Sackboy in the robes that Ezio started out with in the game.

Metal Gear Solid 4Edit

On April Fools' Day 2008, it was revealed that an Altaïr costume for Old Snake could be unlocked in the game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Hideo Kojima, one of the game's creators, later announced that it was not a joke, and that the costume could really be unlocked if the player did "something special."

In order to unlock the costume, the player must have either acquired the "Assassin Emblem" (a nod to the game's title) or input a password in the Extras section. Specifically, the password was been revealed to be aottrykmyn.^[2]

The costume could be used as an alternative disguise early in-game and worked exactly like the Middle East Militia costume. Unlike Altaïr's robes, the Militia costume was lost early in-game, prompting the player to find another set of the disguise, and could cause the Middle Eastern faction to be friendly to the player as opposed to having to work to gain their trust. When the costume was worn, Old Snake would bend his ring finger back into his palm, which was maintained as long as he wore the costume, a reference to Altaïr's missing ring finger.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace WalkerEdit

"Back in the time of the Crusades, members of the order of Assassins used what is called the Assassin's Straw Box to hide and get close to their enemies."

In one of the missions in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, namely Main Ops 16, a unique box made of straw dubbed the Assassin's Straw Boxcould be obtained. To do so, the player must ensure that there was a vacant slot in the equipment section, climb onto the roof of the shack above where the straw box was, and then perform a Leap of Faith into it. The Leap was accompanied by an eagle's screech, similar to its mechanism in the Assassin's Creed series.

Right after obtaining the straw box, one of the main protagonists, Kazuhira Miller, mentioned its use during the Third Crusade (the time period ofAssassin's Creed), and how it was used by the Assassins. After the aforementioned mission was completed, the Assassin's Straw Box was available in the inventory.

The box could hold two people simultaneously and included a special function not found in other box items: knocking out guards while hiding in the box and recruiting the knocked-out soldier using Fulton Recovery (if another player was present). Continued use could damage the item, to the point where the box would be destroyed completely.

Prince of PersiaEdit

In Prince of Persia (2008), Altaïr's costume was available as a free DLC for use by the Prince. Additionally, an achievement entitled "Assassin's View" could be unlocked by standing on a View Point upon the Martyr's Tower.

Similarly, in Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Ezio's costume could be purchased via Uplay for 30 points.

Altaïr's Costume could also be purchased in Prince of Persia: Prodigy, via Uplay.

Saints Row: The ThirdEdit

In the sandbox game Saints Row: The Third, an achievement entitled "Everything is Permitted" was awarded when one eliminated all assassination targets. It is part of The Creed .

Soul Calibur VEdit

In Soul Calibur V, the character Dampierre used a hidden blade called "Hidden Edge" as his ultimate weapon.

The Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimEdit

In the fifth Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, the Dovahkiin may travel to a place called the "Bards Leap Summit"; a large cliff sporting a plank at the top, with a large drop to a pool below, resembling a View Point for a Leap of Faith. If the Dovahkiin survived the drop, a ghost would be summoned who would speak about his failed attempt.

The SaboteurEdit

In The Saboteur, the main protagonist Sean Devlin earned a racing car with white stripes, named Altaïr, which was nicknamed "The Flying Eagle."

The SimpsonsEdit

In the fifth episode of season 23 of The Simpsons, "The Food Wife," a poster could be seen in the back of the fictional games convention E4, featuring a hippie with two Hidden Blades and the title "Assassin's Creed - Summer of Love," besides some other game parodies.

During one mission in The Witcher 2, Geralt could walk up to some haystacks underneath a structure resembling a View Point and find the body of a white-robed man, who looked suspiciously like an Assassin, that appeared to have died when his Leap of Faith failed. The white-robed man also had a blade covering his arm that looked like an Assassin's Hidden Blade.

If the player examined the body, Geralt said, "Hmm... Guess they'll never learn." From there, he would be granted a hidden ability called "Assassin."

10 Tips for going Pro at Counter Strike:

Ever fancied yourself as a Counter-Strike master? Ever thought about going pro? There’s a lot to consider, even once you’re among the best players around. Professional gaming’s no easy gig, and there’s far more to it than simply knowing how to aim a crosshair at an opponent’s face. As such, we’ve been chatting to Elliot Welsh, aka. ‘wez’ of leading competitive gamers Team Dignitas, to find out his ten top tips for moving up the ranks in the world of professional Counter-Strike.

1. Get your hardware sorted

If you want to compete on an even playing field, the last thing you want is a dated rig or sloppy internet connection holding you back. In a game whose combat is as finely balanced as that of Counter-Strike, just a slight framerate drop can be catastrophic. “Low fps can affect your recoil, bullet registration and smoothness of your game,” says Elliot. “If you’re stuck with a terrible computer, you don’t really have much chance online against someone with a top-end machine. Also, a good computer and connection will be the same conditions you’ll be playing on when you turn up to a tournament, so you won’t have to adapt to different conditions when you set up on the day.”

2. Find a team you get along with

Sometimes in life we’re all thrown into a situation where we have to work with people we aren’t so fond of. Like at PC Gamer, for example. Bloody scoundrels, the lot of them. But there’s no doubting that getting on with your team mates is going to make things a whole lot easier down the line. In fact, it might even be better to pick friendly souls with potential to improve than switching in the cream of the crop without knowing them well. “Playing with people you get along with will make you enjoy the game much more, and undoubtedly be more likely to stick together,” says Elliot. “Changing your lineup every month won’t do you much good, even if you’re replacing a player with someone slightly better.”

3. Practice your tactics in the best environments

If you’re considering competitive Counter-Strike, the chances are you’ll already spend a fair number of hours playing the game. But practicing in the right environments is key to your continual improvement. Deathmatch servers are a good place to start – “You respawn as soon as you die, so you’re constantly shooting and it’s a good way to improve your gunplay,” Elliot explains – and clan war practice is pretty much essential. Use a chat program such as mIRC to search for practice games against other teams, and try out all the tactics you’ve been mulling over in your head. “I’d advise having ten minutes after each match you play to assess what you did wrong, what you did right, and how you could improve,” adds Elliot.

4. Watch demos of other players

Practice might make perfect, but there are numerous intricacies to Counter-Strike play that you may be able to pick up from others. Watching demo videos of other players is a great way to assess their mad skills without fear of being gunned down if you take too long to stop and stare. Professionals will have various different ways of moving, aiming, shooting and reacting to different situations. Just make sure you try out your own moves as well: “All players have different styles,” warns Elliot, “and one player’s style may not be suitable for you or your team.” Demos from Dignitas’ players can be found on their website.

Watching demos of pro players can be helpful, but make sure you practice too.

5. Forget the rest, play against the best

It’s always nice to win, so it might be tempting to select weaker opponents for practice matches. But this can be counter-productive. Unless you’re playing at the highest level you’re capable of, there’s not a great deal of compulsion to improve – and certainly less you can take away from both victories and defeats. “Although playing against people below your own ability will still benefit you in some ways,” Elliot explains, “playing against top teams will give you an insight into the level of professional play, and allow you to learn from high level players.”

6. Communication is key

As with all team-based games, but perhaps even more so with Counter-Strike, it’s important to be in good contact with your team mates throughout a match. A lack of communication can be the difference between a decisive victory and an embarrassing, crushing defeat, so talking to each other is tremendously important. But simply maintaining contact isn’t enough: it’s imperative to be efficient with your communications. “It’s best to keep your calls about what’s happening short and quick, and explain everything you know, such as how many enemies you see, if you see the bomb carrier, and what weapons they have,” says Elliot. And be sure to get hold of a voice chat program such as Ventrilo orMumble to utilise during practice: they allow you to speak to your team mates whether you’re dead or alive, an advantage not afforded by Counter-Strike’s in-game chat system.

7. Embrace the community spirit

You might be tempted to pour all your spare hours into improving your game, but there’s more to being a professional Counter-Strike player than simply playing Counter-Strike. Your team could consist of the best players in the world, but if no one knows who you are, you’re probably going to end up going nowhere fast. “Playing an active role in your country’s Counter-Strike community means that there is more general interest, which means there will be more tournaments and therefore more oppotunities to practice in competitions and under pressure,” says Elliot. “Also, it allows you to make friends to casually play with when your team may not be online, so you can still practice even if your team mates aren’t around.”

8. Master the three pillars of skillful combat

Elliot flags three key things to master in Counter-Strike combat: recoil, flashbangs, and smoke grenades. Counter-Strike’s recoil patterns are very different to many shooters, and it’s imperative to master the technique: “For most professional players, the general technique is to spray at close range, tap fire at medium range, and tap slightly slower at long range, all while moving in between taps to make you a harder target to hit,” suggests Elliot. Meanwhile, good grenade use can make all the difference. “Again, watching a professional player’s demo will give you some useful tips,” says Elliot, “but it’s always best to join an empty server with your team mates and practice them for yourself.”

9. Financial advice

Counter-Strike isn’t all about the combat tactics. It’s also a game in which managing your money is key to high-level success. At a professional level, you’ll need to make sure your finances are in check whether you’re winning or losing, because ensuring your team is finely in-tune and well-timed with quick purchases is essential. Elliot’s top tip? “If you find yourself short on money after – say – losing the pistol round, the best thing to do is save your money by not buying anything for one or two rounds, so you can save up enough cash to purchase a rifle and armour.”

10. For goodness’ sake, stick with it

It might sound obvious, but the only way you’ll reach the dizzy heights of top-level professional gaming is to keep plugging away until you’re good enough. It’s a lot of work, and something you’ll need to treat like a real job as much as play – even during those inevitable times when morale reaches rock bottom. “A lot of dedication is needed to become a professional,” says Elliot, “and there will be times when you and your team are trying to improve and results may not always go in your favour. If this happens, the best thing you can do is stick together, and keep playing through it.”

Overview:

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a multiplayer online battle arena mod for the video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is for each team to destroy the opponents' Ancients, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters. As in role-playing games, players level up their heroes and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

The scenario was developed with the "World Editor" of Reign of Chaos, and was updated upon the release of its expansion, The Frozen Throne. There have been many variations of the original concept; the most popular being DotA Allstars, which eventually was simplified to DotA with the release of version 6.68. This specific scenario has been maintained by several authors during development, the latest of whom being the anonymous developer known as "IceFrog" developing the game since 2005.

Since its original release, DotA has become a feature at several worldwide tournaments, including Blizzard Entertainment's BlizzCon and the Asian World Cyber Games, as well as the Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution leagues; in a 2008 article of video game industry website Gamasutra, the article's author claimed that "DotA is likely the most popular and most-discussed free, non-supported game mod in the world". Valve Corporation is currently developing a stand-alone sequel, Dota 2.

You could count the number of decent licensed video games on one hand. But a surprise inclusion might be 2010's Toy Story 3, developed by Avalanche Studios, which combined the usual kiddie-focused platformer with a smart "Toybox" mode where players build their own levels.
Toybox seemed like a watershed for Pixar tie-ins because, rather than cramming the movie's narrative beats into a standard template, it fit the Toy Story concept to an experience the movies couldn't offer. What do kids do with toys, after all, but set them up and play?
Brave: The Video Game is a return to more straightforward territory, a third-person platformer-stroke-shooter developed by Behaviour Interactive (formerly Artificial Mind and Movement). The remit is clear: expand on the film's universe, and try to recreate some of the ever-popular Lego series' magic.

Since 2005's Lego Star Wars, these games (developed by Traveller's Tales) have enjoyed such popular success they're seen as a template for family-friendly gaming – in other words, great for playing with the kids.
Their influence on Brave is heavy, most obvious in the coins forever flowing into flame-haired protagonist Merida, whose grunts and squeals are voiced with considerable vigour by Kelly MacDonald.
The game's story is a companion piece to the movie rather than following it, with the teenage Merida out to defeat a big bad bear with a little help from her family. Brave's working title was The Bear and the Bow, which fits the game perfectly because it's built around Merida's skill with the bow – which here resembles a wooden machine gun.
Everything from defeating enemies to destroying background objects unleashes jingling currency, which tumbles out before homing in and hitting you with a little tinkle. This never-ending stream of tiny rewards gives any action, regardless of significance, a veneer of achievement.
Other lifts are more subtle, such as the bite-sized checkpointing that ensures no restart is too far back, or the instant respawns after a failed jump – of which there will be many.
Brave's platforming sections are plagued by bad camera angles that fool you into thinking a column is more to one side than it actually is. Merida tumbles into oblivion again and again and again.
Thanks to those instant respawns and a generous double-jump these sections never holds things back for too long, but that hardly makes them fun. It's somewhat amusing, though cold comfort, that Lego games share exactly the same flaw.
Brave's own identity is in the combat, a 3D twin-stick shooter built around Merida's combination of bow and sword. She fires bolts continuously in whichever direction you hold the right analogue stick, and four colour-coded ammunition types (unlocked over the first few levels) can be cycled through with the bumpers.
These correspond to handy floating symbols above each enemy's head, and matching ammo to foe kills everything faster.

The ranged combat is initially quick and satisfying, with different types of enemy jumbled together to encourage regular ammo-switching and a mix of offensive styles – wolves dash in to knock Merida off her feet, while tree-like foes take potshots from a distance. When enemies get close a sword swipe usually does for them, though in practice it's rarely unsheathed.
There's not really enough variety to keep things interesting after the first hour or so, though Merida's moveset can be upgraded thanks to those ever-flowing coins, with essential abilities like the dodging roll and jumping attack swiftly unlocked.
All abilities are shared with player 2, who controls a Will O' The Wisp, which in one of the game's biggest missteps is pretty hard to actually see. The film's Wisps have an ethereal blue colouring, which is extraordinarily difficult to keep track of in the game – nevermind the fact that the camera remains locked to Merida, frequently leaving your partner off-screen and waiting for a respawn.
Most of Brave is spent controlling Merida, but there are digressions into lever-pulling puzzles and controlling a big bear. On a few occasions you're a hulking beast, capable of swinging wildly in the general direction of luckless enemies.
The bear has a certain therapeutic quality, letting you forget bumper-fiddling and precision shots in favour of just whacking stuff. It could use an auto-assist, but perhaps looking for subtlety in what is basically HULK SMASH misses the point.
That goes for Brave as a whole. As a straight video game it doesn't excel, yet in terms of its target audience it arguably delivers. The feel of the movie runs through its organic enemies and environments, little hints of Pixar's artistry surviving in the rocks and stones and trees of its world.
Even if it can't hope to match the lushness of its source material, the video game still offers its own impressive vistas and even indulges in the occasional flourish – such as small areas blooming, Okami-style, after larger battles.
Is that enough? Doubtless the charts will tell us it is. The disappointment is that following Toy Story 3's video game, which tried to fit the subject to the medium, Disney Interactive should choose to play it so safe.
No movie studio in the world makes films that bridge generations quite as Pixar does, that mix of wisdom and wonder that can entrance adult and child alike. Perhaps the only interactive equivalent is something as magical as Mario.
As a piece of merchandise, this does the job it needs to. As a video game, it's anything but Brave.

There were a lot of things that made Borderlands such a great game when it came out three years ago: the hardscrabble planet, the oddball characters,
the hostile creatures, the diverse missions, the abundant loot, the powerful skill trees, and the novelty of all these things combined in a cooperative first-person shooter. In Borderlands 2, the novelty is gone, but all of the other elements are back and better than ever. This sequel doubles down on the successes of the original and shores up its shortcomings, improving the familiar formula and delivering dozens and dozens of hours of immensely entertaining gameplay.

Perhaps the most notable difference is that Pandora now feels like a vibrant, living place. What once was a lonely frontier planet populated primarily by savage men and feral beasts is, well, still a planet populated primarily by savage men and feral beasts. But it isn't so lonely anymore, thanks to an expanded cast of diverse and entertaining characters. Many familiar faces return, including the delusional robot, Claptrap; the hayseed mechanic, Scooter; and the bawdy vixen, Moxxi. The four playable characters from the first game are back as well, and they each play a robust role in the story (and have way more spoken lines than ever before). There are some delightful new additions too, such as the arrogant antagonist, Handsome Jack, and the teenage demolitionist, Tiny Tina. Random townsfolk also have a few things to say, no longer content with mute or monosyllabic responses, and even the bandits you fight have a broader range of context-sensitive taunts.

The huge amount of high-quality voice acting required to bring this world to life is fueled by excellent writing, which provides some genuinely nasty tirades and surprisingly tender moments amid the avalanche of laugh-out-loud funny lines. The breadth of personalities invigorates your adventure and makes Pandora a lively, engrossing place, the kind of place it fell short of being in the first game. The only drawback to the sheer volume of communication is that sometimes conversations are cut off by other incoming messages before you can hear them through. This doesn't pose any barrier to progression, but with dialogue this good, you don't want to miss a word.

If you apply this same philosophy to exploration, Borderlands 2 will keep you busy for a very, very long time. The environments of Pandora are more vibrant and diverse this time around, and the eye-catching artistic aesthetic is enlivened with a richer color palette and more clever details. Textures sometimes load sluggishly when you're entering new areas and occasionally look rough upon close inspection, but this is still a visually appealing world. Diligent explorers will find both lovely vistas and amusing sights--the humor of the writing extends into the environmental design as well.

There are tons of areas to visit during the course of your adventure, some of which you won't even see if you don't stray far from the main story missions. The mission system is one area in which small tweaks have a noticeable impact. The onscreen checklist updates you of any mission progress caused by your current actions, even if said progress isn't for your currently selected mission. You can also choose to ignore missions in the menu so that you don't have to constantly scroll past old leftovers to get to the ones you want. It's not necessary to pursue every last mission en route to the final boss, but to stay at a competitive level with your enemies, plan on doing a fair number of side missions. These endeavors are another great source of creativity and humor, including a logic puzzle to decide which of four thieves cheated the others, and the ludicrously simple task titled "Shoot This Guy in the Face."

In addition to missions, there is an expanded array of challenges. These goals are automatically tracked and reward you for actions like offing a certain number of skags or getting a lot of incendiary kills. New location-specific challenges give you further incentive to find hidden secrets in each area, and this extra layer of reward makes idle exploration more appealing. Every challenge completed increases your badass rank, which in turn gives you small bonuses to various attributes (such as gun damage, fire rate, and shield recharge delay) that apply to any character you create, not just your current one. Tweaking challenges and introducing cross-character bonuses aren't big additions to the game, but they serve as a nice acknowledgement of the fact that many players want to play as multiple characters. This overarching reward system is one of the many small improvements that make Borderlands 2 a more player-friendly experience than its predecessor.

Intangible rewards are all well and good, but a huge part of the Borderlands formula is loot, and Borderlands 2 does not disappoint. Guns, shields, grenade mods, class mods, and relics all offer different ways to enhance your combat effectiveness. Building and updating your arsenal with the embarrassment of loot riches Pandora has to offer is still immensely satisfying, and the increased frequency of odd attributes and bonuses means more opportunity to fine-tune your optimal loadout. The option to mark items as junk in your inventory is a welcome addition that makes selling things to vending machines less time-consuming, though an option to mark items as junk on pick-up could have made it even smoother. In another bit of streamlining, cash, health, and ammo are now automatically picked up off the ground most of the time (there are occasional lapses), which means you can happily spend less time looking down.
