Grace Village is dedicated to enabling older adults to live to their fullest potential in the security of a Christian environment. We are committed to expanding services, providing the most up-to-date care, and offering amenities that make the lives of our residents easy and enjoyable. With health care, assisted living, rehabilitation, independent living and retirement condominiums, Grace Village seeks to stay on the cutting edge of senior residency and nursing care. We believe that those who have spent their lives caring for others deserve the best quality care.

Funds from the 4th Annual Golf Outing will be used to remodel the Health Care Facility of our campus. Our Health Care Facility is currently able to care for up to 75 residents who are in need of full-time nursing care. Our Health Care Facility has not seen renovations in over thirteen years, and everything from fixtures to furniture needs to be updated to current standards.

A Grace Village Retirement Community resident for nearly 8 years, Naomi does anything but sit still. When people have questioned her as to why she doesn’t just rest, she always replies, “That once I begin to just sit in my chair, I will be done.”

Recently, Naomi proved again that life does not end when one moves into a retirement home. She and Charles had lived at Grace Village 1 year and 10 months when he passed away. As missionaries to Nigeria in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s Naomi has plenty of stories to tell. However, the story she told me in my office recently, was not about Nigeria, it was about the Chicago Cubs.

Since Charles and Naomi attended Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, from 1950-1953, she had been a fan of the Chicago Cubs. She is not your typical long-distance fan, either. She watches the Cubs faithfully and has done so for years. She even has a favorite player.

Knowing all of this, Naomi’s niece Suzanne and her husband Paul, decided to treat Naomi to a Cubs game. On Sunday, August 21st it was going to be the St. Louis Cardinals vs the Chicago Cubs and it was going to be at Wrigley Field. Jennifer, Naomi’s granddaughter along with Jennifer’s boyfriend, Neil, made the trip with her from Warsaw to Suzanne’s house.

At ninety-three, Naomi gets along quite well with just a walker. However, Paul knew, considering the crowds and the uneven pavement in spots, that Naomi’s walker could cause her more hinderance than help. Knowing Naomi would balk at the idea of a wheelchair, Paul had a surprise for her. So as Naomi sat in her neice’s home, Paul began to explain.

“Naomi,” he began, “do you see that thing over there?” Naomi peered around the side of her chair and saw a wheelchair. “Yes,” she calmly replied.

“Well,” Paul continued, “since our parking place is two blocks from the stadium, and because once in the building there will be quite a bit of walking up and down steep ramps, the Cubs have sent that wheelchair so you could get to the game without doing all of that walking.”

Naomi was incredulous. “The Cubs sent that chair?”

Paul smiled and replied, “Yes, they did. Now, you can use their wheelchair to get to your seat, and we will use it again to get you back to the car, but then I have to return it to the Cubs.”

Naomi was in awe. The Cubs had sent her a wheelchair. “My goodness,” she thought, “why would they send a chair for me to go to their game? My goodness.”

When Naomi arrived at Wrigley Field it looked so different from the last time she had been there. But then again, the last time was 1953. Paul elected Neil to be the force behind the Cub’s wheelchair which Naomi was happily seated. She could not believe the crowd. As they wheeled her through the gate she watched as they checked everyone for knives and guns. When they got to her, they not only let her pass through, but she was given a warm greeting too. As they began to merge with the crowd of people she was surprise at how the crowd parted as if she were royalty. Many people, “even the teenagers” greeted her and told her to have a great time at the game.

It seemed as if they walked forever. Naomi was grateful for her Cubs wheelchair. As Paul led the way, they went up ramp after ramp instead of waiting for with the long lines at the elevators. A few times Naomi worried that they would lose Paul in the crowd, but Neil assured her that he could still see him. Finally, Paul announced that they had arrived.

Their box seats held about 18 seats. Some of Suzanne and Paul’s friends had already arrived. Naomi found a seat at the end of the third row. Suzanne sat next to her and pretty soon Paul and other family members were taking pictures. Naomi said it seemed as if they took 100 pictures while she sat there. Soon, the game started and Naomi became engrossed in watching it. She loved her view right behind 1st base. She could see everything. She noticed everyone in their section would get up and get food and drinks from the concessions, switching seats, moving around to talk to each other.

In the middle of the fifth inning Naomi’s interest in the game was interrupted.

“Hello, Mrs. Baldwin,” a voice next to her said. Naomi was startled to see a perfect stranger sitting next to her. “I believe this is your first time to Wrigley Field in a long time. When was the last time you were here?”

“Well,” she replied still wondering who he was. ”It was 1953.”

“I wasn’t even born yet!” he exclaimed smiling. “Oh my goodness, all of those years you have kept up with the Cubs?”

“Well, all except when we were missionaries in Nigeria, West Africa for the Church of the Brethren. We had no television or electricity over there to watch the Cubs. But after Great Britian gave Nigeria her independence in 1960, we came back in 1961. By then, the 94 missionaries that were there, had trained Nigerians to pastor and teach and organize their churches. So we came home. So, since 1961, I began watching the Cubs again.”

“Oh my goodness, Mrs. Baldwin. All of those years you have kept up with the Cubs. My name is Kevin, and as an Ambassador of the Cubs, I want to welcome you to Wrigley Field and to the Cubs’ game today.”

As they continued to talk, Naomi found out the young man had worked in Fort Wayne and was very familiar with Warsaw and Winona Lake and even knew where Grace Village was located.

“I understand you have a favorite player,” Kevin queried.

“Yes, I do. It’s Starlin Castro.”

“Why do you like him?”

“Because I know he is only 21 years old and here he is in the big league right out of high school.”

“Since he is your favorite player, I have a few pictures to give you,” Kevin responded. He then proceeded to give her four pictures and one autographed one from Starlin Castro. “This one is just for you.” He handed her the pictures and a souvenir book as well.

As he handed her a Cubs cap he explained he would not put it on his head because he didn’t want to mess up her beautiful hair-do. Naomi laughed thinking to herself, “He is really good at his job!”

After he left, Naomi carefully packed away the souvenirs and decided to get something to eat. She noticed the Cubs were losing, but that didn’t deter her excitement of enjoying all that was happening “to an old lady like me.”

Sometime later as she sat in her seat, once again engrossed in the game, she noticed the seat next to her occupied once again by a stranger. This time Paul was right behind her.

“Naomi,” Paul began, “I would like to introduce you to Ted Ricketts. He owns the Cubs.”

“Hello Mrs. Baldwin. I hear you have come to see our game. Where do you come from?”

“Indiana,” replied Naomi.

“Indiana? You are 93 ½ and you travelled all of the way from Indiana to see the Cubs? We really appreciate you coming!” Ted Ricketts quietly exclaimed.

“Oh no,” Naomi said with a twinkle in her eye. “I appreciate that you would take the time to come and talk to this old lady.”

“I am sorry we are not winning tonight. I wish we could have won for you,” acknowledging it was the eighth inning.
“That’s okay. I enjoy the Cubs whether they win or lose.”

Ted Ricketts and Naomi talked about Starlin being her favorite player. He told her that he was indeed a nice kid. Naomi was pleased to hear this and to hear that each of the players had rules and regulations that they had to follow.

After Ted Ricketts had left, Naomi motioned for Paul to come and talk to her.

“Are you sure this is the first time you have met this man?” she asked Paul suspiciously.

Finally, Paul confessed to her that he was a good friend of his.

After having desert and watching the Cubs finish their losing game to the Cardinals, Naomi was wheeled back to the car for the trip home. She watched as Paul then returned the Cubs’ wheelchair back to the stadium.

“It was a weekend I could not have dreamed up in one thousand years,” she explained to me as we sat in my office. “I was just there to watch the Cubs’ game. My dear niece and her husband did this all for me. They arranged everything. What a surprise! I still cannot believe I had that kind of evening with the Cubs. I will never forget this as long as I have a memory.”

She then shared her pictures of her eventful night. Sure enough, there she sat with Kevin, the Ambassador and Ted Ricketts the owner.

As she got ready to leave my office, I could not help but thank her for sharing her experience with me. I know if I had asked her about Nigeria, we could have spent hours talking. And we probably will someday. Actually, we spent hours talking about this experience. She reminded me again of her Charles’ desire that she not sit in her room and grief.

She has definitely kept her part of that bargain. God has used Naomi many times to help others who arrive at Grace Village to know that being at the end of one’s life does not mean life has ended. It just means a new chapter has begun.

The award is designed to recognize those businesses that are leaders in hiring people with disabilities and providing them with training. Carroll explained earlier that the award was based, in part, on Grace Village’s experience of seeing an employee learn to read while in the employ of Grace Village.
