This brilliant video for Yeasayer’s single ‘Ambling Alp’ is a breath of fresh air in the dying art of the music video. The clip opens with Chris Keating getting a really intense face massage whilst singing, a bunch of naked people are herded around a desert by riders with mirrors for faces and the rest of the band’s faces eventually break off from their bodies in the form of glowing liquid tube aka The Abyss. If this is what the Mayan Apocalypse is going to look like, count me in.

Futuna Chapel — sometimes described as the most significant New Zealand building of the 20th Century — Is a place of reflection, contemplation, meditation and inspiration.

Designed by John Scott in 1958 and built by the brothers of the Society of Mary in 1961, Futuna Chapel is Scott’s best known and most highly regarded work.

The building represents an important combination of Māori and Pākehā architecture. On one hand it is a modernist building that uses geometrical forms and materials. While on the other it has aspects of a Marae (Māori meeting house), such as a large centre pole and sharply sloping eaves.

Architect Craig Martin writes that:

“Only a philistine could sit on a pew in the Futuna and not connect with the spirit, the mauri, of the building…the play of light across the walls and floor, the contrasts of material and texture, the perfectly proportioned walls and windows, the human size and intimacy of the spaces, and the chapel’s strong connection with the earth.

These qualities don’t come from the building’s history, or how much it cost, or even its Christian connections. They come from the quality of the architecture.”

For me the Chapel is a a brilliant example of geometry and modern design.

The acrylic sheets (that look like stained glass windows) and use of a diagonal axis from entry to altar certainly give the chapel a feeling of other-worldliness.

This building will most definitely open your eyes and mind.

In saying all that, I think that currently there is an increasing lack of ‘web’ related content being created in the blogisphere. The current trend consists of either creating the next ‘50 best / top 20′ list or re-posting the same content from the usual suspects (who write great content I might add).

I have to admit, I used to operate this way on my previous website. I’d find something innovative, interesting and sometimes mind-blowing, repost it to the masses and I was done.

Nice quick and easy.

But this year I feel like a change, I feel like (hopefully) blogging about something you haven’t heard of, something that will inspire you and sharing some of the knowledge that I have picked up whilst working in the industry we love.

I hope some of it will be useful to you

And I challenge you to do the same.
