Here's my painting of Ra's Al Ghul AKA The Demon's Head AKA Liam Neeson from the It's Only Madness exhibition. Ideally i would have spent a some more time on this one but my self imposed deadline was totally approaching and this one is really really big, like bigger than I should really ever try to paint. I'm used to drawing tiny little doodles in pocket sketchbooks, but I had this big dumb scrappy old mouldy 3rd or 4th generation canvas sitting in my studio full of spiders and taking up valuable space instead of having a Batman villain on it.

So I somehow managed to get 21 paintings of Batman villains finished for my It's Only Madness.. exhibition at ARThive this month. The opening afternoon was a relaxed afternoon with friends, lollies, and cokes, and Eddie Botha came dressed as Batman! Radical. Anyway, here's the first painting I finished in the series, Mister Freeze! I'm going to try and post a new one of these every day until i run out, at which point I should hopefully have some more new stuff to show you, so keep checking back! SUBSCRIBE i guess, or if you get a chance, do pop into the gallery upstairs at 111 Hunter st Newcastle, these will still be on show for another week or so and then into the vault they go.
Also, massive thanks must go to my mate Nicholas Pitt for photographing my work with his expensive and heavy camera.

It's Only Madness

I really like Batman so at 2pm on Sunday Feb 5 at ARThive I will be unveiling 20 new paintings of various Batman villains, including The Joker, Mister Freeze, Penguin, Killer Croc, Two-Face, Clock King, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Black Mask, Mad Hatter, Clayface, The Riddler, Bane, Crazy Quilt, Calendar Man, Zsasz, Scarecrow, Ventriloquist, Ra's Al Ghul, and Manbat. I've been working on these on-and-off in my studio for about a year, but the time has come to quit faffing about and just show them to people. So if you like Batman too and wanna have a look at them, come to 111 Hunter Street Newcastle on Feb 5 and i'll put on a spread of fizzy drinks and lollies and maybe put Prince's soundtrack to Batman '89 on the stereo.

Here is my submission for this weeks OzComics weekly drawing challenge on Facebook. The Tick! I've tried to actively participate in these kinds of things before and most of the time i end up slacking off, but I'm going to really try and do at least one new (finished) drawing per week for the blog from now on, and that's as good a motivator as anything i suppose. The topics have been really good so far too, so if i start neglecting you all please don't let me get away with it, I need the practice! I drew this in one of those $6 Montmarte 190GSM watercolour paper books, the paper is the worst, like drawing on wet newspaper.

Hey! Merry Christmas to everybody that follows this blog or likes my drawings, thanks for stickin' around! Hopefully 2012 will be a bit more productive around here, I don't make a habit of new years resolutions but I do intend to draw and paint heaps heaps more than i have been starting RIGHT NOW. Here's a Santa Claus drawing I started around this time in 2009 which has sat in a drawer ALL THIS TIME. I was never 100% happy with it but I figure it's as finished as it's ever going to be so i may as well take advantage of all the silly seasons google traffic. SEE YAS LATER DUDES.

Hey! I've been heaps busy working and daydreaming and playing videogames and trying to make the gallery look nice for December and trying to finish all my paintings and i have to do some washing pretty soon. Played a few shows with Polyfox which were fun, it's nice to pretend i'm still a capable musician of some sort. Nicholas has written some new songs which are fun to play and Sarah Mould is playing keyboards for us now too. Also had an insane mission to Byron Bay to be part of 111Boadrum with BOREDOMS (I was cymbal player #48). It was super the most fun thing ever and totally inspiring. Here is a painting of The Incredible Hulk.

Hurrah! First drawing I've finished in aaaaaaages. The Toxic Avenger! The first superhero from New Jersey! I've been heaps busy doing other stuff but I've got lots of new arts on the way, still working away on my It's Only Madness exhibition which I'm going to try and have ready for December but maybe early next year if I can't get it finished in time. May as well do it properly right? I'm painting again which is what i really set out to achieve with this so mission accomplished already dudes. But yeah hang tight, if you're a Batman dork like me it will hopefully be worth the wait. Ps Have you played Arkham City yet? It's so good!

I pitched THIS IS NOT BART as a joke exhibition to the other ARThive dudes a little while back and it's actually happening now. I've painted a new canvas for it, i'll post it here when i get a chance i promise. Some other guys who have made work for it are Sarah Mould, Rose Turner, Logan Knight, Jessica Louttit, Angus Crowley, Mike Foxall, Steven Nuttall, Elizabeth Nagy, Eddie Botha and there's actually heaps more. Drawing Time

I haven't exhibited any work in Sydney for a really long time so you should go and look at this! I'm serious!

Drawing Time is an upcoming group exhibition curated by Daniel Smith that will take place at Sydney's Gaffa Gallery from September 7-19. Drawing Time will act to survey a range of techniques and methodologies that can be classed as drawing across a range of mediums. The banner of "drawing" can be applied due to the essence of the works not just for the mediums used to create them. The artists chosen use drawing as a large part of their practice or their style of work lends itself well to the title of drawing. Works vary and include digital works, sewn pieces, sculptures, paintings, water-colours, books and prints. Artists featured include Grant Hunter, Tobius Miller, Joel Beerden, Amanda Kenneth, Jo-Ann Cahill, gerant, Daniel Smith, Anastasia Freeman, Bran Sinclair, Taryn Raffan, Sarah Mould, Daniel Tanner, Eleanor Jane Robinson, Patrycja Nedziak, Eduardo Wolfe-Alegria, and Kel Macintosh. A limited edition art book will be available for purchase on the night and will also be available in digital formats.

I haven't been drawing much, been too dumb and depressed or something, which is lame but I'm painting whenever i have the time, trying to concentrate on finishing everything for It's Only Madness, a solo exhibition I've been trying to put together all year. Finally have some time off from banging my head against a wall at ARThive so maybe things are looking up! I'm really excited about the gallery at the moment, we're cooking up some cool stuff, just need a break sometimes dudes quit hasslin' me. Speaking of extended breaks, Crab Smasher are playing what is either a reunion/farewell/tribute show at The Sando in Sydney next Friday August 12. It's Scattered Order's album launch too, so might not be a total train wreck.
Finally, here's a drawing of the Peter Davison era Dr.Who that I did today for an Ozcomics weekly drawing challenge.

This is a drawing that I did for the Alternate Woodland Critter Evolution Fan-Fiction exhibition that Logan Knight put together at ARThive a little while ago. I haven't posted it here yet because I made it just the right size to fit in a cheap black frame but as it turns out it is really dumb size to fit in an a4 scanner and I don't have a good digital camera but to hell with it I've scanned it anyway, the image above is missing a few centimetres on the left hand side, use your imagination to fill in the rest of the picture and enjoy the work as it was originally intended.

You might not know this but I have heaps and heaps of sketchbooks full of doodles, squiggles, and half finished ideas that will probably never ever become anything worth using so I may as well start posting it here, even if it's heaps dumb or total junk or just heaps of big eyes, teeth, and little circles. I'll try and make daily posts but if they become less frequent it's probably because i've thought better of it.

This is another work of mine from the Art Vandelay exhibition about nothing which is on at ARThive right now. This one is of Newman aka Wayne Knight aka the primary antagonist from the TV show Seinfeld. To make this I drew it up on an A4 sheet of paper with some black and brown ink, and then scanned it into photoshop and coloured it with a wacom intuos4 graphics tablet. The opening night for the exhibition was really awesome, heaps and heaps of people came along, lots of artists sold work, everybody who came seemed to have fun and be totally into it, united by a mutual love for the best sitcom ever. I've sold a few Newman prints already which is pretty exciting, and it even appeared in yesterday's Newcastle Herald in an article gushing about the show, so if you'd like a print for yourself or your Dad you should come into ARThive and check it out, it's on for a few weeks so you've got plenty of time. I totally think it's the coolest and most important art show on in Newcastle right now, but we'll hold the final verdict until we hear what the critics have to say haha. (not really).

Going Off At The Swamp (Also Bung It On The Barbie)

This is another drawing that I did for the Going Off At The Swamp music festival, this one was for the 2004 event, which I think was intended to be more of a big family barbecue kind of vibe, well that's what they asked me to draw on the poster anyway. This particular year at GOATS was particularly notable as it was here that Crab Smasher played their first ever live performance, which set in motion a long and complicated chain of events that have steered me this way and that way for the last seven years of my life.
