This text contains one of the most famous phrases in Scripture, “For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

Saul’s problem with the Lord’s command was different from ours. He didn’t mind killing a bunch of Amalekites. Instead He objected to the Lord’s command that he destroy the valuable spoils of war because he feared upsetting his soldiers. Saul’s imperfect obedience results in the Lord taking away his kingdom.Download Saul Loses His Kingdom</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The theme of I Samuel is “Looking for a Leader”. Who will be fit to lead the people of God? Saul is the people’s choice – Mr. Tall Handsome Warrior. Sadly he quickly fell into disobedience (I Samuel 13). His lack of fitness for leadership is further shown in this week’s text as he causes great harm to Israel (and nearly kills his heroic faithful son, Jonathan) because of his foolish pride.

Sadly, many leaders today, of nations, homes, businesses, and churches, resemble Saul as they abuse the authority which God has entrusted to them. Those who are supposed to serve those under their authority are often self centered, domineering, harsh, manipulative, arbitrary and hypocritical. Thank God that we have a King (Jesus) who came not to be served, but to serve His people. Pray for those in leadership that we will be like Him.Download Saul&#039;s Folly</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Last week we left Israel in what appeared to be an impossible situation. They were overwhelmingly outnumbered and outgunned by the Philistines. After a hopeful beginning their new king had failed a crucial test and seemed to have lost the confidence of the people. God delights in using our situations of extremity and hopelessness to demonstrate His great power through us. Saul’s son Jonathan, along with his armorbearer, attacks the Philistines outpost leading to a great victory for the Israelites.

Our text contains one of the great statements of faith in all of Scripture. As Jonathan faces the Philistine stronghold he encourages his companion, “Come and let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; perhaps the LORD will work for us, for The LORD is not restrained to save by many or by few.”

We too are called upon to assault strongholds, not militarily, but in the realm of truth (II Co. 10:3-5). Sadly, we are often prone, like Saul, to sit back and wait when we should be engaging the enemy. We have hope for victory by God’s power. After all, didn’t He save us from spiritual rebellion and death?Download By Many or By Few</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>A couple of years ago we studied Hebrews 11 which surveys figures from the Old Testament who set a great example of faith and obedience. There are other figures in the Bible from whom we can learn as a bad example of unbelief and disobedience. If there were a Hebrews 11 of bad examples, Saul would definitely be included.

Saul’s life is tragic. He enjoyed a promising start when he was anointed as king (I Sam. 9-10), led Israel to victory over the Ammonites (I Sam. 11), and then participated in the renewal of the kingdom (chapter 12). God graciously offered blessing to him and his kingdom, in spite of their sins, if only they would be faithful to the covenant. Yet when his faith was tested Saul took his eyes off of the LORD and took matters into his own hands disobeying God’s clear commandment. His sin is compounded by his many lame excuses and his misuse of religion. As a result his kingdom is taken from him.

I have to confess that I sympathize with Saul. It is hard to trust and obey God when the chips are down and everything in the flesh cries out for you to seek your own solution. We sometimes take obedience to God’s commands too lightly and then make excuses for our disobedience. Sometimes churches are more concerned about losing followers than offending God by their compromises. We too suffer the consequences of our sin. We should marvel at His patience towards us. How we thank God for our King Jesus who succeeded where Saul (and we) failed.Download Saul Sacrifices His Kingdom</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>There have been many famous farewell addresses. None in American history is more significant than that of George Washington who, when leaving the presidency, appealed to his countrymen to avoid debt, regional squabbles, and foreign entanglements. There are also famous farewells in the Bible including Moses and Joshua in the Old Testament and Paul in the New Testament (II Tim. 4).

I Samuel 12 contains Samuel’s farewell address to Israel. While Samuel is not leaving public life all together, his speech marks the end of the era of the judges as he hands power over to King Saul. The point of his speech is to call Israel to faithfulness to the covenant. Though they have sinned against the LORD by seeking a king to deliver them, the LORD will bless them and their king if they wholeheartedly serve Him. The church, like Israel is prone to wander from God who is gracious to work out His purposes in our lives in spite of our sins and failures.

Samuel by his exemplary life, his persistent intercession, and his teaching is a model for all spiritual leaders. However, Christ is our true prophet, priest and king who perfectly intercedes for us and instructs us.Download Samuel&#039;s Farewell Address</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Revelation 5 - I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?" And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it. Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it; and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals." And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. "You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth." Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing." And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, "To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever." And the four living creatures kept saying, "Amen " And the elders fell down and worshiped. Download Lamb of God, Slain &amp; Exalted: Do You Long for Heaven?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>How do you measure success? Is it the car you drive and the house you own? Is it in the happiness you enjoy with your family? Or is success achieved by how highly others esteem your accomplishments in life?

This week we will be taking a break from our I Samuel series as we consider Proverbs chapter 3 which tells us how to be truly successful in life. The great Old Testament scholar, Bruce Waltke says of Proverbs 3, This chapter will give you a finer education than you will get from almost any modern university (and I would add at a much cheaper price).

You may remember that the first nine chapters of Proverbs contain several extended discourses which appeal to the reader to seek wisdom. The discourse in Proverbs 3 sets forth the great benefits of wisdom. Verse 4 summarizes the chapter. The one who gains wisdom will be successful in his dealings with both God and man. The chapter goes on to explain four ways you can act wisely towards God and three ways to act wisely towards men, along with resultant blessings.

Some who read Proverbs 3 may question, however, whether the wise are most blessed in this life. Sometimes godly people suffer from disease, calamity, and injustice. There is much more going on in Proverbs 3 than initially meets the eye. The blessings of wisdom are not all experienced in this life. This chapter points to the blessings of wisdom which are sure to come to the wise in the everlasting kingdom of God (for example see verse 18).

Another tension an honest reader experiences is the realization that none of us meet the high standard set by this chapter. This is why we need Christ who has become to us Wisdom from God (I Co. 1:30-31 Col. 2:3). He lived the life of perfect wisdom towards God and men. He died for our sinful folly. He makes us wise.Download How to Be Truly Successful in Life</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this week's text, the Ammonite king, Nahash, wants to not only enslave the Israelite city of Jabesh-gilead, but to gouge out all of their eyes as well. God’s people need a deliverer. This proves to be the perfect time for the new king, Saul, to prove himself. The Spirit comes upon Saul who with holy anger rallies Israel to a great victory for which he gives glory to God.

We are engaged in spiritual warfare, being surrounded by those who would destroy us. We too need the empowerment of the Spirit. We may even experience righteous anger, but we need to be careful because we fight, not with the weapons of the world, but with truth.

Finally, we were in desperate need of deliverance because of our slavery to sin and death. God sent a Spirit empowered Deliverer Who has defeated our enemy. To God be the glory.Download The LORD Delivers Israel from the Ammonites</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>n last week’s passage God told Samuel to give Israel a king, but we were left hanging as to whom the king would be and how he would be recognized. In this week’s text, the LORD orchestrates an amazing sequence of events to demonstrate Saul is King both privately (with Samuel) and publicly before the people. The theological term for God’s working out His great purposes through seemingly ordinary events is providence.

The LORD is also orchestrating our lives through His providence. We also need revelation from God so that we can rightly interpret and respond to the events He brings into our lives. Saul had Samuel to explain what God was doing. We have the Scriptures.Download God Gives Israel the King They Sought</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>There is probably no passage in the Bible which better reflects the dangers of human government than I Samuel 8. Israel seeks a king to bring them security and prosperity, but Samuel warns them that they will pay a great price for the ruler they demand. Our politicians often campaign as messiah’s promising change which will make us secure from war, disease, injustice, and poverty. Sadly, they too fail to deliver.

This passage, however, is not primarily about politics. When Israel’s leaders seek a king, they are guilty of rejecting God as their king. They want to be like the other nations, instead of being holy (separate) as God is holy. They look to a man to give them victory in battle, rather than the LORD who has repeatedly delivered them.

The church, God’s kingdom on earth, is often guilty of looking to men (both political and spiritual leaders) rather than God. Those who put their hope in men will reap the consequences, which include having leaders who take away their possessions and their freedom. There is another King who gives instead of taking. The majority rejected Him, but all who follow Him find His yoke to be easy and His burden light. He alone brings salvation to His people and heaven to earth. He is worthy of our devotion and our praise.Download Israel Demands a King</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>How often do American churchgoers these days hear sermons about repentance? Many popular preachers are more concerned about building up their hearers’ self esteem than bringing them under conviction of sin. Even some reformed Christians are so eager to hear exclusively about what God has done for us in Christ that they are wary of sermons which proclaim our duty to actively turn from our sin.

When Israel had tried to defeat the Philistines by bringing the ark of the covenant into battle, they were crushed (I Samuel 4). Twenty years later, when the Israelites finally cried out to the Lord and heeded Samuel’s call to repentance, the Lord gave them a great victory. They marked their victory with the Ebenezer (If you pay attention on Sunday, you’ll know what an Ebenezer is).

The church today needs preachers like Samuel who will proclaim the necessity of a heartfelt turning from sin to God. We too have idols which contribute to our spiritual defeats. When we turn to God, He gives us help and victory – which we should remember.Download Repentance and Revival</itunes:summary>

Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"? But He gives a greater grace Therefore it says, "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble." Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. <itunes:summary>In an age when women are pressured to either become feminists or sex-objects, it is important that we present a biblical view of what it means to be a woman.

Women have been given a different role than that of men in the church and in the home. They have unique spiritual needs. They face different challenges and temptations. God’s design in the church is that the Elders encourage the older (more mature) women to train the younger ladies to be the kind of women who honor God with their femininity. My hope is to encourage the entire congregation to embrace the beautiful biblical vision of womanhood presented in Titus 2. (Don’t worry if you are single or male, this text will speak to you as well).

<itunes:summary>This week we finish the second major section of I Samuel: The Ark Narrative (chapters 4-6). Last week we saw that when Israel tried to use the ark of the covenant as a magic charm in battle, they were soundly defeated by the Philistines and the ark was taken captive. The Philistines supposed that their god Dagon had given them victory over the LORD. The LORD demonstrates, however, that He is still sovereign and that He can take care of His ark and His people. After God creates havoc among the Philistines by destroying Dagon’s statue (a humorous account) and by smiting them with tumors (not funny to them), the Philistines are more eager to get rid of the ark than they had been to capture it in the first place.

One of the most striking lessons of this text is the hardness of heart among the Philistine leaders. They keep propping up and pasting back together their worthless idol Dagon, rather than bowing the knee to the LORD who has demonstrated Himself to be the One True God. Isn’t that what people do in our day as well?Download Lessons in Ark-eology</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Are you superstitious? Is there any harm to carrying a rabbit’s foot? What about wearing a St. Christopher’s medal for safety? Have you ever observed a baseball player cross himself before coming up to bat? Did it help him?

When Israel faced defeat at the hands of the Philistines they tried to use the ark of the covenant as some kind of lucky charm by which they could channel the power of God to help them conquer their enemies. They have no more success than the evil Nazis in the movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” As a result of their folly and faithlessness Israel is plunged into one of its darkest hours. It appears that the glory has departed.

Here are some questions to consider while listening to this week's sermon. Do people today try to manipulate supernatural powers for their own benefit? Do professing Christians put God to the test as Israel did? How? Where is God’s glory displayed today? Are there cases in which the glory of the Lord has departed from a particular place?

<itunes:summary>This Sunday we come to the most famous passage in the Bible about parental failure as Eli fails to restrain his wicked sons.

Our text is not, however, primarily about parenting. God is working to remove the corrupt failed leadership of Israel and to replace them with godly leaders who will lead the nation out of their spiritual barrenness. In the short term this will involve ending the dynasty of Eli (and his sons) as Samuel is raised up. God will then work to establish a true ruler (David) and Priesthood for His covenant people. Ultimately I Samuel 2 point us to Christ our great, perfect and eternal King and Priest (2:10,35).

The phrase upon which I am focusing as we expound this lengthy passage is 2:30b where the LORD says, “Those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me will be lightly esteemed.” You will see that I Samuel 2:11-36 goes back and forth between Samuel who honors God and Eli’s family which dishonors Him. Finally, God declares judgment upon Eli’s house as He determines to establish new leadership for His people.

This passage also has profound application for us as we consider how we seek to honor God in the church and in our families. Spiritual leaders continue to act like Eli’s wicked sons as they dishonor God by ignoring His requirements for worship and abusing His sheep. Parents continue to fail as Eli failed as they dishonor God by pleasing their children instead of the Lord. Children who enjoy great spiritual privileges sometimes harden their hearts against God’s truth. How we need God’s mercy!

<itunes:summary>I Samuel begins with the story of Hannah – a barren woman whose husband apparently took on a second wife so that an heir could be produced. In her misery she cries out to God who hears and answers in a glorious way.

But I Samuel 1 is not merely Hannah’s story. It is the story of Israel in the days of the Judges – barren and fruitless, divided, oppressed by the Philistines. Hannah’s son does not merely deliver her from her predicament. More importantly, Samuel is the prophet and kingmaker who will anoint the great king who will lead Israel to her greatest earthly glory. The deliverance which begins with Hannah’s story points to a greater deliverance which would take place over 1000 years later - when a prophet who resembles Samuel would point us to the Son of David who will reign forever.

Our text for this morning is Genesis 1 - Malachi 4 as we do a survey of the Old Testament which will show where I Samuel fits into the history of God’s people.
