It’s been almost a month since I was admitted to the hospital and I am no further in finding the reason for my pain. The pain has now radiated to the other side of my lower back resulting in having pain in both the kidney areas. I have tried doing online research only to learn of more things that could possibly be wrong. There are some I have doubts about. Since I have my follow up appointment with the Upper GI doctor this Thursday, I will be adding to this particular blog when I know more details.

I’m finding it overly frustrating not to know what is wrong and even more so not to be able to do something about it. I am too young to have to stress over this whole issue. Tendencies to cry more often are appearing, sometimes when I least expect it. Doing the research helped to a point, but I am not about to diagnose myself. I have a list of questions for the doctor and hopefully will get some answers. I did manage to lose another 3 lbs. which is a good thing for me since I have been a bit overweight these past few years. Losing weight will also help with the diabetes.

If anyone has ever had any problems with their kidneys or lower back pain I would like to discuss this subject with them. Please do not be afraid to put a comment on any of my blogs. I only want to be able to help someone else down the line when they come up with something they don’t understand. Helping one another is the best way to keep ourselves happy, sane and healthy.

There’s been a lot of speculation about how Michael died. Some very powerful drugs were found in his home. And why did his personal in house doctor disappear right after Michael’s body was taken away in the ambulance? I have my own ideas, but I am sure so do others.

Why did Michael have such powerful drugs? Wasn’t he worried that his children would accidentally get into them? If Michael was able to get such drugs, why didn’t his doctor say NO when Michael requested taking some? Why wasn’t Michael in rehab if he was “hooked” on these drugs? Why didn’t someone reach out and help him when the situation got out of hand? Why didn’t his personal doctor intervene and refuse to give him drugs? Sounds too fishy to me.

What happened was that a great talent passed away. Too young to die. He had too much to live for. I cannot believe he would do anything to jeopardize the world tour he was getting ready for. He was too eager to do that tour. Something happened the day he died. Will the world ever know what happened? We can only hope.

Sunday evening I had such severe stabbing pain in my lower back left side and felt like I was going to vomit any second. Alex rushed me to the ER where we sat for an hour before my being seen. Once in the ER I did begin vomiting and kept vomiting. A CT scan was done to determine why I had the pain and I was admitted. So began the 6 day stay.

Day 1- I was really “out of it” due to the pain medication given. I could barely move, but my stomach wasn’t giving in to the pain, so the vomiting continued off and on. I thought there was nothing left to vomit, but I was wrong. I spent this day mainly in pain along with the vomiting. I had an ultrasound done to determine why this was going on.

Day 2- I learned the ultrasound didn’t show anything that might be causing me to have the pain in my side. So frustrating! I want to know why the pain and what can we do about it. In all this time I was on IV, no food or drink allowed in case they had to operate on me.

Day 3- I learned the blood test done on Day 1 showed nothing new, but the previous pancreatitis was now gone. That was good news, but I still have that nagging pain. It’s a good thing I have some wonderful, caring nurses. I know it’s their job, but they are very concerned for me and expressed it. I was told the doctor in charge of my case, the one who had me admitted, wasn’t happy about not finding the cause of the pain. She seems to think I am a mystery. Just letting my stomach “relax” and still nothing to eat or drink.

Day 4-I have lost count of how many bags of IV I’ve had. I’m more concerned today about the blood sugar levels I’ve been having, mainly due to the IV which doesn’t come in a sugar free choice. There is 4mg per bag going into my blood system, resulting in high blood glucose levels, none of which have been under 235 since I came into the hospital. The IV connection which was put into my hand on Sunday evening had to be changed today (after 3 days they fear the area will become infected, so it’s a standard rule to change it). The nurse who came to redo the IV connection had a problem with my veins. Seems they are small, but she finally managed to get the connection in place. Now the doctor is talking about possible shingles. Since I did have chickenpox as a child the disease can lie dormant in the body until a time when it may suddenly occur. My back and stomach area were checked for the rash, nothing was found. I was told shingles can take weeks to months to appear. It will be itchy. The endoscopy was done today. Nothing abnormal was found. Another test and no answers! By now I am more than frustrated. I am totally stressed out about this. My blood pressure and blood sugar are elevated. The blood pressure levels are over 250 most of the time. The blood sugar levels are still in the same range as the blood pressure. I know this means there is something wrong with my body and I certainly wish the doctors would find what it is.

Day 5- Today I had a test in nuclear medicine, one that should show if my gall bladder is working correctly. The other tests I had on this area only showed the exterior. This test will show the interior and if the gall bladder is correctly working. I get there and learn the test takes 1 1/2 hours. Getting on the metal table my back began to ache again. The first hour I was injected with a radio active matter that basically made my organs glow, like being a human glow worm. The second part a medication was injected to make the gall bladder contract to see if it was working properly. When it came time to get up off the table, I felt like I was paralyzed and couldn’t move. The nurse helped me up, but when she did I heard something pop in my lower back. When I mentioned this to the head nurse on the floor where I was staying she reported it. So, another x-ray to make sure I didn’t do something really bad to my back. That test showed stretched ligaments, so I was taking pain medication for that and having warm compresses on my lower back. The IV is taken away. A victory for me, but the blood sugar levels are still high.

Day 6- The surgeon came in to let me know I wouldn’t need surgery. All the functions the gall bladder was doing were just fine. He felt my problem would be shingles, but still there is no rash. I am also very stressed out. HA! Of course! Wouldn’t you be stressed having someone poke around your body, taking test after test and still no valid answer? Letting me go home today. Great! It’s been almost a week without a shower, taking only baths with a washcloth doesn’t help me feel better. I call Alex to pick me up at 2. Can’t wait to go home. The frustration of this week has gotten to me. I cry, wanting to hit something. There are two things I learned while in the hospital this week- my organs are all functioning properly and I lost 8 lbs. But after I come home, the pain in my back is still there. I came home feeling worse than when I went in, being in more pain now. I can’t sit or stand for very long with my back beginning to feel the deep pain. Plus I still have the pain left side near my kidney.

First day home- my blood pressure came down to a more normal level, but the blood sugar level is still in the upper 200s. I hope it will go down now that I am on my normal medication for diabetes. I am very weak and tired today. Plus the back pain is still there, no matter what I do.

Second day home- Tired, weak feeling along with the back ache. It hurts to sit, hurts to lay down, hurts to walk. I need to check in with my family doctor. I am just not sure what came be done, but the heating pad helps a bit. All in all, the stay in the hospital was frustrating. The bright spot was the nursing staff who all were so wonderful to me and concerned, the ones who listened when I complained, who held my hand and told me it will get better, and sympathsized with me about the possibility of shingles.

I was very interested in this Cash for Clunkers being talked about on the news so I did a little research. It would appear the government is willing to help some of the citizens by giving up to $4500 for an vehicle 1984 or newer that does not have a good miles per gallon rating. Those are the “clunkers”. Under 18 miles a gallon is not beneficial and retiring that vehicle would be a wonderful idea. Unfortunately, there is a hitch to this plan- you MUST purchase a new vehicle, not a used one. I don’t feel this is fair since most people who do own an older gas guzzler are not in any way, shape, or form to purchase a new vehicle. We have one we could trade in and get this wonderful rebate, but I doubt if we could get a loan since Alex is laid off and unemployment benefits would not qualify as a “job”. I am sure there are millions of Americans in the same boat we are..unable to get what the government deems a “good” deal. Also vehicles dating back further than 1984 are not considered in this program. Doesn’t seem right, does it?

Obama is supposed to sign this when he signs the “Supplemental War Spending” bill since this is an attachment to that bill. How long that will take depends on what else is going under this bill. Why this must be an attachment and not it’s own bill is beyond me. The government will be giving the car dealerships the information for this program. While it will help car dealers, will it really help most Americans? I doubt it very much. Most are too poor or have too much bad credit to get a loan for a new car. Seems once again we are on the outside looking in.

Due to recent indigestion problems on my part, after some research on the Internet, Alex decided to buy me a book titled THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF SOY by Dianne Gregg. What an eye opening book! I never realized too much soy in the diet could cause some of the problems I was having. Bloating, nausea, a feeling that I had to throw up, diarrhea and gas. I did go to a gastroenterologist to see what he could find. Alex even questioned soy, but the doctor didn’t seem to think that was my problem. After reading this book, I think soy may be at least part of the problem I am currently having.

Dianne stated in her book that she learned she was severely allergic to soy. She had almost died due to eating what she considered a healthy diet, which included soy. She began to gain weight, felt sick to her stomach, had nausea, diarrhea, and then almost died due to anaphylactic shock. All because she ate and drank a lot of soy products. She learned the hard way, but she wrote this book so others won’t have to learn as she did. Soy is not good for everyone.

No longer does Dianne take life for granted. She has to be very careful not to let soy ruin her life. Perhaps that is what the rest of us should also do. Cutting back on the amount of soy in your diet may help lessen problems in the future. Children are subjected to soy on a daily basis, even babies. Soy is in baby foods, soy milk, soy bars, cereals and more. We as parents have to be on the look out for dangerous things our children may eat or drink. Read labels when you are in the grocery store. If the label states soy or lecithin, and some vegetable oils in the first three ingredients, then the product has too much soy.

Soy is grown to be an emulsifier in foods. An emulsifier is a food additive that prevents separation of sauces or other processed foods. Soy is used widely in Asia, where it is fermented. The United States does not ferment the soy beans, leaving in the toxins. This may be part of the problem which Dianne suggests. More and more babies are being fed soy milk, resulting in health issues as they grow up. Studies indicate Mrs. Gregg may be right, but she may also be wrong. Would it really hurt to lessen the amount of soy in your diet? Read her book. The price is low enough so you can buy it, but it’s also well worth spending those few dollars to understand the dangers soy can have on your own health and that of your family.

Hundreds of thousands of Iranian protesters streamed down the streets in the capital demanding their votes be recounted. The re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinjad has stirred the protesters to fill the streets, yelling and complaining about the election.

The recent photos in newspapers and video clips on television show the police swinging their nightsticks at anyone who got in front of them, including women. I watched as one seemed to aim at the mid sections of protesters who got in his way. Some police took to a rooftop, firing on the protesters below, killing 1 man and injuring many others.

The protesters were arguing the election was rigged. The big mahoff got his way and the people feel he did something to the votes to make it go his way. Mir Hossein Mousavi was with the protesters. He felt he was leading the election. Most Iranians wanted him to win and voted for him. He is requesting the votes be recounted.

Be thankful you are in America where we have a much better life than the Iranians. Too many people take for granted what freedoms we have. We have choices we can make on our own, no one telling us what to do, what type of job to have, or what kind of education we can pursue. Americans tend to forget these things. They are our rights as American citizens, yet some choose to abuse these rights. While we can feel for the people of Iran and what they are going through at this time, we also have to understand that as Americans we need to remember our freedoms. God bless the U.S.A!

Lately I am feeling like a pill pusher. I take 5 pills for diabetes, 1 for high blood pressure, 1 for my nerves, another for cholesterol,2 water pill for my swelling feet, and now 2 more for my stomach. Now these are not all taken at once, but it takes me time to get all the pills out daily and make sure they are all taken. In one instance the cholesterol pill was very expensive..$136 without insurance, $40 with my insurance. Holy Hanna! I just about died at the pharmacy! I can’t keep taking these medications if they are going to cost me an arm and a leg. I am beginning to think of myself as a guinea pig with some of the medication.

I never asked for Diabetes, nor the stomach problems i am having right now. I do eat a fairly healthy diet and try not to over indulge. Seconds are not begging me to devour them. I know I could be doing worse, but the amount of pills I swallow in one day makes me cringe. Yet, what choice do I have? It’s either to life or to die. I am choosing life.

I know there are people out there who take more pills than I do. To you I would welcome any comments. To me it seems the drug companies are making money hand over fist and we, the ill, need to buy their merchandise to keep our bodies going. So, I will take the white, the pink, the blue, and the capsules as needed. Then there’s losing weight. Always hard to accomplish, but how to exercise with a stomach that keeps trying to knock me down. I don’t know if better health care would work to keep the prices down on the medications we need to keep going. Health care businesses must be booming right now even though we are in a recession. Pills are recession proof!

As she sits in the Bucks County Prison on $1 million bail, what is Bonnie Sweeten thinking about? Her children? Why did she do what she did? Why create such an elaborate hoax? What made her do what she did? Why did she take Julia to Disney World, a place full of people who would definitely see the little girl whose picture was on the news all over the country? When did she dream this up?

Southampton is a small town in the south of Pennsylvania. A pretty area with nice homes, one of which Bonnie lived in with her second husband and three daughters. There has been some news that she may have stolen some money, but no one has filed any charges of theft against her yet. There’s been talk of domestic problems, which her husband has denied. The children look happy. The husband wants her back and said he will forgive her. Her ex-husband and Julia’s father said he can’t understand why she created this hoax as it’s just not like her to do something so strange. She has a lot of support from friends in the neighborhood who say she is very nice and well liked by all, including the black neighbors who are a bit taken back by the statement she made about being abducted by two black men. They can’t understand that as they say she has always treated them like the rest of her neighbors. So, we paint a picture of a small town woman, loved by all, who suddenly seemed to snap and create a hoax that had police scrambling to find her and her daughter.

Charged with two misdemeanors (filing a false police report and identity theft-she basically stole a co-workers licence and used that to get the plane tickets) Bonnie sits in jail. The prosecutor argued that she is a flight risk so the judge set a high bail. She will need 10% of that to get out. Will her family and friends help raise that money so she can come home? The judge did grant her supervised visits with her children.

Since she just had a baby 8 months ago, I wonder if the defense will use the baby as the reason. Women have done some really strange things undergoing post-partum depression. They have killed their children, beaten their husbands, and other things. This is all documented. So, I am thinking this is might be the reason Bonnie went to such extremes to create this hoax. If this isn’t the case, then she is smarter than people think and she needs to be punished for it. So we wait and see what will come about in the next few days and weeks with this story. Will she open up and tell all? That remains to be seen.

For heartburn sugarless chewing gum helps. The chewing stimulates the flow of saliva which helps stomach acids. It also does help prevent cavities.

Full strength dish detergent used with 2 hours of exposure to poison ivy will work to prevent the itching and redness if rubbed on the area of concern. Any dish detergent will work but it has to be full strength. Then wash it all off.

Vicks vaporub and other cold remedies like it will cure toenail fungus. Use twice a day to clear up the fungus.

Baking soda: an effective antacid- follow directions on the box. Also good for earwax. Takes time but it’s a safe way to get rid of packed earwax that is interfering with hearing. Mix 1/4 teaspoon backing soda with 2 teaspoons warm warm, lie on your side with one ear on a pillow and have someone drip the mixture into your exposed ear using a small spoon or eyedropper. Wait an hour then flush out the dissolved ear wax with warm water using a bulb-shaped ear syringe. Do not use this method on children who have tubes in their ears.

Anne Rueter of the University of Michigan Health System wrote an interesting article about this subject recently. A common blood test for triglycerides may for the first time allow doctors to predict which patients with diabetes will be more likely to develop the serious, common complication of neuropathy. The study is now online in the journal DIABETES. The study is to appear in print in the journal’s July issue.

Kelli A. Sullivan, Ph.D., was quoted as saying, “In our study, elevated triglycerides were the most accurate at predicting nerve fiber loss, compared to all other measures.” She is co-first author of the study and an assistant research professor in neurology at the U-M Medical School.

Neuropathy is a condition in which nerves are damaged or lost with resulting numbness, tingling and pain, often it the hands, arms, legs and feet. Worsening neuropathy is more likely over a period of one year if the patient also has high triglycerides. Higher levels of other fats in the blood or of blood glucose did not turn out to be significant. Patients can reduce blood triglyceride levels using the same measures that reduce cholesterol levels. These are avoiding harmful fats in the diet and exercising regularly.

Neuropathy affects about 60% of the 23 million people in the U.S. who have diabetes. It’s a complication for both Type 1 and Type 2. The condition in the past has only come to light when patients complain of the tingling or pain in their extremities.
