Legislation to honour Malala in US planned

A US lawmaker, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, is introducing legislation to honour Malala Yousufzai, the girl who earned worldwide admiration for defying a Taliban ban on women’s education. Ms Jackson Lee, Democrat from Texas and chairperson of the Pakistan caucus in the US Congress, wrote a letter to her colleagues on Wednesday and urged them to support the cause for awarding a Congressional gold medal to Malala Yousufzai.

At the State Department, spokesperson Victoria Nuland noted that Malala’s “bravery and courage are just an inspiration for all of us”.
In her letter to other lawmakers Ms Jackson Lee noted that although just 15, Malala “stood against the oppressive policies imposed upon the citizens of Pakistan by the Taliban”. Malala’s stand for education for girls and gender equality resulted in the Taliban calling for her death and later a Taliban gunman tried to kill her, the lawmaker recalled.
Shot in Swat in October, Malala was allowed to go home this week from a Birmingham hospital after recovering from her injuries.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in which two other girls were also injured.
“I am pleased to say that Malala survived the attack. The shooting of this young girl has sent shockwaves through the region and around the world; religious leaders and communities are condemning her shooting, yet the Taliban remain unrepentant.
“Malala has displayed true courage as she continued to fight for justice, even while her life was in danger,” the congresswoman observed.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee said because of her courage, Malala has become a symbol of hope in a country long beset by violence and oppression.
“It is fitting that Malala has become the new face of Pakistan.”

Malala Yousafzai was born into a Muslim family of Pashtun ethnicity in July 1997 and given her first name, Malala, meaning "grief stricken", after Malalai of Maiwand, a Pashtun poetess and warrior woman. Her last name, Yousufzai, is that of a large Pashtun tribal confederation that is predominant in Pakistan's Swat Valley, where she grew up. At her house in Mingora, she lived with her two younger brothers, her parents, and two pet chickens. She affectionately referred to the region as "my Swat."

Yousafzai was shaped in large part by her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who is a poet, school owner and an educational activist himself, running a chain of schools known as the Khushal Public School, named after a famous Pashtun poet, Khushal Khan Khattak. She once stated to an interviewer that she would like to become a doctor, though later her father encouraged her to become a politician instead. It has also been indicated that she may have wanted to be a pilot. Ziauddin referred to his daughter as something entirely special, permitting her to stay up at night and talk about politics after her two brothers had been sent to bed.

Yousafzai apparently started speaking about education rights as early as September 2008. Her father took her to Peshawar to speak at the local press club. "How dare the Taliban take away my basic right to education?" Yousafzai told her audience in a speech that was covered by newspapers and television channels, throughout the region

Malala Yousafzai wins 2012 Tipperary International Peace Award

Malala Yousufzai has been awarded the 2012 Tipperary International Peace Award from Ireland for her courage and determination to speak out in support of equal access to education for children.

Malala was one of five nominees, including US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, President of Indian National Congress Sonia Gandhi, former Kenyan journalist John Githongo and Pax Christi International, the Catholic human rights and peace organization.

Malala, 15, is recovering at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where she was brought from Pakistan on October 15.

The teenager was shot on her school bus in northwestern Swat in October by Pakistani Taliban gunmen for promoting girls’ education and speaking against the militant group. However, she survived the murder attempt.

Malala first rose to prominence aged just 11 with a blog for the BBC Urdu service in 2009 in which she described life in Swat during the bloody rule of the Taliban.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was also awarded the Tipperary Peace Award in 2007.
